Chapter 23-Rebuilding
A few days had passed since the conversation between Li and Sienna. During that time, Li had also met with Chen to fill him in on what was going on. Chen, with the help of Xiao Ming from afar, were keeping him abreast of looming meetings, aside from his soon flight to Miami.
Li Wei stood in the kitchen of Sienna's house, leaning against the counter with a fresh cup of coffee in his hands. The house was quiet, except for the soft sounds of Harmony stirring in her crib down the hall heard on the baby monitor in the kitchen.
He took a slow sip, letting the warmth spread through him. It was still surreal—waking up in Sienna's home, knowing that he wasn't just visiting, that he was staying with her and his daughter.
Sienna emerged from the bedroom, her hair slightly tousled, dressed in one of Li's oversized sweatshirts and a pair of leggings. She offered him a small, sleepy smile as she padded toward the coffee pot. "You're up early."
"Habit." He watched as she poured herself a cup, adding creamer, inhaling deeply before taking a sip.
Sienna leaned against the counter beside him, their arms brushing. The simple touch sent warmth through him, grounding him in the reality of their new beginning.
"It's still strange having you here," she admitted softly, her eyes meeting his.
"I know," he replied. "But I'm here. I meant what I said, Sienna. I'm in this."
He turned to her. "How are you though? You slept much better last night than the previous nights. You were bundled under me like you were looking for safety."
Sienna let out a soft laugh. "I'm better. The soreness is diminishing some. I just haven't..." she sighed with a pause.
"I just haven't had a good night's sleep in months Li."
He tilted his head to the side with a puzzled look. "Explain."
"Just the weight of everything and the stress. Then as I got further along in my pregnancy, it was hard to get comfortable to sleep. Harmony was a night owl like her dad" she said offering a small smile.
"Just...you being here and sleeping next to you felt good. It reminded me of Shanghai and it just gave me peace."
She swallowed, setting her cup down. "But, I don't want to mess this up, Li. I don't want to overcomplicate things, but I know we need to figure out what this is—what we are."
Li turned to fully face her. "We were something before, Sienna. Something real. That hasn't changed for me."
Her lips parted, and for a moment, she said nothing. Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she asked, "Are we trying again? Is that really what you want?"
Li exhaled, setting his coffee down before reaching for her hands. "I want us. I want to be with you, Sienna. Not just as Harmony's father, but as your partner. Only if that's what you want too."
A tear slipped down her cheek, and she smiled. "I want that too, Li."
Relief washed over him, and without hesitation, he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. She melted into his embrace, her hands clutching the fabric of his shirt as if anchoring herself to him.
After a long moment, he pulled back just enough to press a kiss to her forehead. "We take it one step at a time, remember?," he murmured, repeating the promise they had made.
She nodded, her fingers lingering against his chest. "One step at a time."
At that moment, they heard Harmony's small cry on monitor. "I got her" he said before retreating out of the kitchen.
Sienna stood there with a small, grateful smile on her face.
The next few weeks passed in a blur of adjusting, balancing, and finding their rhythm. Li's meetings with the executives in Miami were intensive, but he was always up for the challenge.
While filming the series took a lot of his time, every moment he wasn't on set or in a meeting, he was there—with Sienna, with Harmony.
Chen had returned to Shanghai after the Miami meetings, tasked with tying up loose ends and handling matters for Li Wei. Yet, his mind remained on what lay ahead. He had vowed that upon his return, they would find a way to introduce Harmony and Sienna to the world—on their own terms—before the public had a chance to speculate.
By this time, Li had become a pro at changing diapers, helping with late-night feedings, and he spent hours just watching both Harmony and Sienna sleep.
One evening, after putting Harmony down for the night, Sienna sat beside him on the couch, tucking her legs beneath her.
"You really want to stay here instead of a hotel Li?" she asked, though her tone was more teasing than questioning. One he had grown familiar with.
"I'd rather be here with you both," he replied simply.
She studied him for a moment. "I guess I still don't understand why you're willing to forgive me so easily."
Li let out a breath, shifting to face her. "Because I know you Sienna. I know your heart. And I know that you weren't trying to hurt me maliciously."
"It hurt, yes. But I understand now why you did it. You were scared. You were trying to protect Harmony, to protect me. It doesn't change the fact that I love you."
Her eyes glistened. "I was trying to protect you both and I... I love you too Li. I just know that I went about it all wrong."
He reached for her hand, lacing their fingers together. "We can't change what happened. But we can decide what happens next."
Sienna squeezed his hand. "Then let's make it count."
A slow smile spread across his face. "Let's build something together."
She tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
His gaze softened. "I mean us. Our family. And maybe even more."
Sienna arched a brow. "More? What are you saying Mr. Wei? You know I love a good proposal."
He chuckled. "I've been thinking a lot. About your work, my work. About what it would look like to merge our worlds. I know we have a long way to go, but what if we built something that worked for all of us? A way for me to be here, to work from here when I can. A way for you to still thrive in your career."
She blinked. "You've really thought about this?"
He nodded. "Every day since I got here."
Sienna leaned into him, resting her head against his shoulder. "I like the sound of that."
"Then let's figure it out—together." He turned and cupped her chin with his hands. He pressed a passionate kiss onto her lips.
When Sienna pulled away, she smiled. "Li... you know that's how Harmony got here."
They both let out a small chuckle before leaning back onto the couch enjoying each other's embrace.
For the first time in a long time, Sienna and Li both felt something they hadn't allowed themselves to feel in years.
Hope.
