Chapter 26: Mountain 8-28-16

Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and the Hobbits watched Gandalf and Sam ride away on Shadowfax.

"Looks like we have a long way to go," Aragorn said, "Let's go,"

Boromir picked Merry back up and followed the others.

"Could I try walking again?" Merry asked.

"Hmm... I don't think that's a good idea," Boromir said as he walked on.

"Please? Could I try?"

"Fine," Boromir said.

Boromir and Pippin stopped and Boromir put Merry down on the ground gently. As soon as Merry hit the ground he felt the lingering pain in his leg, "Ouch,"

"Nope, you can't walk yet," Boromir said and lifted Merry again.

Merry groaned in frustration.

"So, what was your final count?" Legolas asked Gimli walking next to him.

"52. I bet you can't beat that," Gimli said.

"I myself had a final of 53," Legolas said and smiled.

"What?" Gimli grunted in surprise.

"Better luck next time!" Legolas said and then run to catch up with Aragorn.

Gimli moaned and mumbled to himself.

The Fellowship walked and walked. The rain was letting up some making the travelers less cold. They could see the mountains far out east in front of them, they had to find Frodo and he was east. So they kept walking and trudging forward.

A/N: Here's this map again if that helps you to see where they are. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Gandalf and Sam had made it to the mountains. Strangely they hadn't seen any sign of Frodo anywhere and where getting nervous. Pippin had said no mention of crossing the mountain, but yet Gandalf could sense something either coming from the other side of the mountain or even within. He wasn't quite sure what it was yet.

"We will stop here and go over the mountain," Gandalf said and got off Shadowfax.

Sam jumped of the horse and followed while he put his backpack on. They both started up at the snowy mountain as they stood at the foot of it. It wasn't too tall, but very wide. There was snow on the mountain too, but it wasn't as deep and cold like the mountains of Caradhras.

"Ready?" Gandalf asked.

"Ready," Sam said and put his coat a little tighter around himself.

They started climbing. The snow got deeper as they climbed higher and higher and higher. Gandalf thought it would have been impossible for Frodo to climb this on his own. But still he felt some sort of presence nearby. The snow was up to Sam's waist so far and without Gandalf's constant help of pulling him up, he would have froze or been buried. Sam stayed close to Gandalf so he could be warmer. Thank goodness it wasn't snowing.

"Are you sure Frodo came this way?" Sam asked through chattering teeth.

"Something did... or has. I'm not sure what, but I feel something strange... almost evil," Gandalf explained.

"If something where here recently, wouldn't there be a trail through the snow?" Sam asked.

"In these mountains it snows once every couple days. I wouldn't be surprised if it had been snowing just before we started climbing,"

They kept going through the mountain after that quietly besides Sam's chattering teeth and the crunch of the snow as they pressed onwards. It was beginning to get a little windy and they took a break in a small cave. Sam sat down and shook off all the snow caked onto his lower legs and feet. He was cold, but it wasn't as bad as the mountains of Caradhras they had hiked so long ago.

"We must keep moving. I fear it will begin to snow sometime tonight or tomorrow," Gandalf explained, "We must be off the mountain by that time,"

Sam nodded and followed Gandalf back out into the cold weather. He wondered where Frodo was and if they were even going the right way.

"We are about halfway across the mountain," Gandalf said.

They had been hiking all day, which meant sometime the next morning they were reaching the other side of the mountain. The moon was casting a ghostly white glow on the snow. It made the journey through the snow a lot colder without the warmth of the sun. Gandalf and Sam kept trekking on and on through the snow making a trail as they went.
