Description: Adrian King is the grim reaper, and has been for over century. His job is to deliver deceased souls to the underworld, the opposite of the soul keeper, Delilah Gates. When souls go missing, war is threatened and loyalties are questioned.
So I've never read any book like this. I was never into the Grim Reaper thing or as I like to refer to him, a guy in a black hoodie carrying a scythe. Despite that this book, currently having 1.71k reads and 742 stars, it was very enjoyable to read, it felt professional just as praisyevermore was. I honestly don't understand how it ranks #949 in Soul, but the books above it are more popular. But why did I enjoy this masterpiece, well I'll tell you!
1. Writing Style ✍
The writing style was masterful, it was just simply amazing. I can't even find the correct words to describe it. As I said, it reminded me of the book praisyevermore wrote, Vishta.
Though I struggle finding the correct words to describe the writing style, the examples speak for themselves.
"Her words were barely a whisper, falling from her lips in defeat as she rose from the charred ground. Her hands were stained black- coated in the ashes of the fallen- and her eyes were a bright green, the only source of colour in the grey she had wound up."
(Prologue)
"Her presence burned like the sun and as she glided across the room, weaving around untucked chairs and wonky, rounded tables, the humans male's eyes trailed her, widened as his jaw went slack."
(Chapter One)
"Following her lead, I felt the pressure in my gut, the same pull that always came when I created the unnatural gap between times. Like split ink, a slithering, ghostly veil of mist split around the tear and I stepped through, grimacing as the world around me spun and shifted, becoming more than it had been, in a place that it was not."
(Chapter Two)
"Once in the city, noise splintered my ears from every direction. There was the inhumane screech of the winged beasts as they swooped down, plucking up stragglers and vanishing back up above the layer of smoke that descended along the air, the tops of buildings concealed through the thick puffs of black and white."
(Chapter Three)
Truly amazing, I mean that to the fullest extent possible.
2. Plot📖 (Yeah, I'm done with SPOILER warnings)
So the plot centers the current reaper, Adrian King partnering with his lover and complete opposite, Delilah Gates to find the cause of the missing souls as tensions rise. Pretty good plot, the only real cliche was Adrian and Delilah, with how opposite they are from each other. I've seen some instances of that kind of relationship in other works my mind fails to remember right now.
Some chapters did kinda stray away from the main plot, but it was fine and it allowed me to see character in Adrian, speaking of character...
3. Characters 🙋♂️🙋♀️
Was the first flaw I noticed with the book, though Adrian was just fine as himself, the others felt...uninspired. Delilah just seemed just like SOME women in this world. It's like hardly any thought went into her.
As for Lucien, he just seemed like a guy who sticks around for the adventure, I didn't spot anything too unique about him, he was just kinda... there. Then again I read ten chapters including prologue so.... maybe there's some redeeming characters somewhere.
4. Environmental and Character Descriptions 👁🏞
This is another thing the book excels in. My God, it was just beautiful to see the descriptions. Again, I can show you better than I can tell you but man, I haven't descriptions like that in a while. I though was no such thing as perfect, well for now there is no such thing.
"The small, square TV that was propped above the bar was on, football match flickering against the glitching screen and barman leaned against the counter lazily, his hooded eyes watching the game as his fingers tapped against the hardwood. His lanky frame curled in on itself, and long strands of greasy hair escaped the hair tie that bound it, falling into his dark, shifty eyes."
(Chapter One)
"Her smile was like watching galaxies burn, tragic but enthralled with the beauty that inspired poetry. Her eyes were like supernovas, bright and forceful, as though ready to explode at any moment. With red painted lips and long, golden curls that fell down to her waist, she was a picture of perfection.
(Chapter One)
"Towers extended out on the horizon, terrifying, gothic builds that stretched so high they rocked and swayed when the winged beasts that spiralled through the blood-red skies swooped around them."
(Chapter Two)
"Neon lights flashed and flickered, illuminating the Hideous beasts that claimed the city as their home. Green-skinned, reptilian creatures watched from the shadows, dressed in rags and thick, dark coats, their sideway-closing eyes blinking at me, cold with judgment."
(Chapter Three)
I told you I could show you better than I could tell you.
5. Originality💡
This story isn't affected by many cliches, mainly because there were hardly any. Now since this book ranks #949 in soul, this leads me to believe that there are many books similar to this. This is the first 'soul' book I've read and the first time I came across a Grim Reaper situation, I did think the storyline was very original, but obviously the author isn't the first one to make such a story.
6. Overall Tone🎭
The story had a mix of feelings, at first you may believe the Grim Reaper is a heartless monster but no, he's just a guy with a scythe. The story basically pushes you to feel pity for the poor guy, he has to reap innocent people for their souls, even when he doesn't want to. It's like his only happiness is at the bar or when he's around Delilah.
With all that out of the way, let's see where this story sets, hopefully the author is okay with the score or else Adrian will be coming for my soul.
Rating Score: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Yet another story that came close to achieving the golden crown... it really hurts. simsfan478 may have some competition. Remember how I said for now there is no such thing as perfect for now, well that was directly said to the descriptions. This book was near perfect with, if I remember correctly, TWO errors, one that I have found and another one some other user found. He or she commented the error in the comments, it may or may not be corrected.
Now I have to get information on the Walking Dead to do my first fanfic review... sometimes these reviews can be difficult.
So go be supportive and try the book for yourselves, if you've already the book then what the heck are you doing, READ IT AGAIN!
Until next time.
