01|| rides to school and tests
"Ew, Bio. Remind me again why we have to take this useless subject?"
Queens, New York, April 2016-
When Alison Marnell woke up on a rather ugly Wednesday morning, she knew that the day would be extraordinarily awful. Her mind was reminded of the Bio test she had, which, for a freshmen like her, was absolute death, and the quiz in Geometry about figures or something like that.
She gave a groan as she pushed herself out of bed, her alarm clock still ringing to the tone of "Highway to Hell." To Alison, nothing was as great as finding out that your younger brother had, yet again, hacked into your digital alarm clock and changed the song.
Normally, Aliso would wake up to the pop tune of Demi Lovato playing "Confident", reminding Alison to get up and, as the song title said, be confident of the new day. Most of the time, it really didn't work, but hey, as long as it got her out of bed Alison was just fine.
Slipping on some ripped black jeans and a casual blue plaid t-shirt, Ali swiped her backpack and its contents from her desk chair, and walked out of her room. Her brother Charles was already in the kitchen, working on some sort of technology.
The 13 year old was tinkering with what seemed to be a drone, attaching a camera of some sort to the small white drone. His chocolate brown hair, normally styled in an almost mini swoop, was still rather messy from sleep.
Charles seemed hard at work, so when Alison came behind him and "accidentally" smacked his head with her backpack, his mood went from one of concentration to one of annoyance. "What a nice good morning greeting." He shook his head in an amused manner.
Alison didn't respond, instead opting to take a bagel that Charles left in the toaster for her out of the machine, sticking the bagel in her mouth. She gave some sort of muffled greeting to Charles before walking towards the door.
Taking the bagel out of her mouth, Alison reached for the door with her free hand. "Charlie, don't forget that Lexi's gonna be picking you up today. I'm hitching a ride from her, I don't want to take my bike to school today."
Charles gave a small thumbs up in Alison's general direction to show he received the message. "Have fun, and don't do anything stupid today." Those words were an almost unspoken tradition in the Anderson-Marnell household, and today wasn't going to be the day in which that tradition was broken.
Alison gave her traditional laugh, walking out of the apartment and into the hallway. She shut the door behind her, deciding to skip the wait of the elevator and walk down the eleven flights of stairs to the lobby.
Stepping quickly down the stairs, Alison almost flew out of the lobby, finding her best friend Lexi waiting outside of the apartment complex for her in her car. The window was rolled down, probably so Lexi could talk to Alison as Ali climbed into the car. Checking her watch, Lexi gave a disapproving glance to Alison. "That's 3 minutes later than usual, Miss Marnell. I believe that it is due cause for-"
"A detention?" Alison mocked her friend, opening Lexi's Honda car door, throwing her backpack down carelessly. "I'm sure you can find another secret shortcut to shave off those three minutes late. You're always one to be on time. For everything." Slamming the door shut, Ali got into a comfortable position and buckled her seatbelt.
"And while I'm sure that's true, being punctual is always important to me. Early? Even better." Lexi pulled out of her spot in front of the apartment, joining the normal Queens traffic. "Now, if we go down this Avenue-"
"And here come the shortcuts." Alison chuckled, pulling out her phone from her back pocket. The phone had been shoved into her pocket earlier in the morning, right as she was getting dressed. "Just get me to school on time, and I'll be a happy woman."
Lexi gave a small nod, turning onto a hidden avenue. "Let's get rolling to Carter High School then." She pushed the car's gas pedal into the fastest she could within speed limit, navigating the empty avenue.
"So-" Alison's voice filled the empty silence of the car. "How was your study session with Brian last night?" She wiggled her eyebrows in an almost inappropriate manner. "I'm assuming you locked yourselves in a closet for a make out session."
"We did- I did not!" Lexi exclaimed, her mind clamoring for the words to fire back at Alison. "we were just studying! It was nothing more."
"Mhm," Alison shook her head, unconvinced by the girl's case. "Studying the laws of love and how to kiss, sure. History? I don't think so." She teased, noticing Lexi's cheeks flush red even more violently than before.
"Let's just- let's just listen to the news." Lexi tried to change the subject, turning on the news radio that the girls occasionally listened to on the way to school.
"Breaking News," The radio announcer chimed, a surprised tone seeping into their voice. "Avengers Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have broken out of custody in Berlin after violating the newly inducted Sokovia Accords created by New York lawyer Logan Lance. We are still learning details of this event, so stay tuned."
Both girl's faces were held in a state of temporary shock. The knew about the Sokovia Accords, as the document was in every New York news station at almost every hour, praising that a lawyer from New York had made the document. Alison and Lexi were getting tired of hearing news stations rave on and on about the Accords, but they hadn't known that the argument between superheroes had gotten this bad.
"So if the Avengers split up, then does that mean all of the fangirl lessons that Mr. Steinfield taught were invalid?" Lexi asked her friend, breaking the silent spell that had held over the car for a few moments.
Alison couldn't help but laugh at the notion. "I suppose not. They still saved Earth twice while they were together. So I suppose most of it isn't invalid." She pointed out, looking at the road ahead of her. The apartment buildings so close to each other was a welcome sight, especially after turning down an avenue that was nothing but warehouses.
Lexi gave an almost roll of her eyes. "I don't know what you expect out of superheroes. They just cause damage, and have no regards for the things they leave behind." She looked over at Alison, who was at the moment placing her feet on the dashboard.
"You know, Charles really likes them. So I suppose by default I have to as well." Alison leaned back in her seat, trying to find a comfortable position in the car. "Ever since our Dad ditched us on Jackie's doorstep three years ago, we've learned that sticking together is the best way to go about things."
Lexi turned on her blinker, making a right turn onto the road that would lead them to the school. "You don't talk about him very often. Your Dad, I mean." Lexi realized, smacking Alison's feet off of the dashboard.
Alison gave a shrug, looking over at her friend. Lexi had busied herself with watching the road in front of her. "What is there to tell? He ditched us after a doorstep. Never told us what he was doing it, just decided that he couldn't do it anymore."
"Have you- have you kept in contact?" Lexi questioned, realizing now was the time to ask any questions she could about the past that Alison normally never liked to reveal.
"Why would I? He left us on a doorstep. No number, no email. I just know that he works somewhere at a realtor company or something." Alison dismissed the subject quickly, shutting down any more questions from Lexi.
Lexi just nodded, pulling her car into the lot. "Well, good talk. Now get out, this girl doesn't want to lose her driver's permit dragging around a freshie." She opened her door, blowing some hair out of her face that the wind had just blown straight into her face.
Alison just gave a roll of her eyes, getting out of the car, and slamming the door behind her. "I don't know how we ever became friends, Lexi Belle. A freshmen and a sophomore getting along, it's rather absurd."
"It's high school." Lexi argued, shutting her car door. "How much weirder can life get? I've seen seniors and freshmen date, so I'm sure our friendship is possible. Now scramble off to class freshie, or I'll actually see you in detention."
By the time the girls had made it into Carter High, the bell to go to class was ringing. The girls scrambled out of the car, opting to take their backpacks with them as they ran to their first classes- Bio and Chemistry, respectively.
Alison barely made it to class, sliding into her seat at the last moment. The teacher hadn't made it in yet, to Alison's surprise and relief. She made herself comfy in her assigned seat, reviewing the curriculum that had been assigned to read.
When the teacher walked in, they seemed rather hasty to get the lesson started. "Get your study material away, it's time for the Bio Test. As it's April, might I remind you finals start next month, so be sure that you remember the curriculum."
The students in the class let out a groan, beginning to place their books away. No freshmen enjoyed finals, especially after the last term. They were way harder at Carter High than all of them expected.
"Now, as I call out your name....." The teacher started, the world seeming to block out anything else. She was focused, and Alison would ace this test if it was the last thing she could do today. Bio was never her strong subject, so she looked forward to leaving class soon. There were only 60 minutes left of class......
To Alison's surprise, she actually did rather well on the test. Scoring an A- on the Bio Honors test was cause for some mini celebration. But not yet, Alison still had to finish the rest of her day. Walking to her locker, Alison got her books for Geometry, and the quiz that would come during the period.
Geometry was rather easy, as was the rest of the day, which was just a prep period instead of PE, as the water polo and track seasons had already been finished for the year. However, during History, her teacher Mr. Steinfield only talked about the Avengers and the impact that they had on World War II. More in particular, Captain America.
Mr. Steinfield's room was filled with Captain America memorabilia, and posters of the Avengers plastered all across the room. It was like he was Alison's younger brother Charles, but an adult version of the boy. And it was days like these that Alison couldn't stand the 35 year old teacher.
By the time the bell rang, Alison eagerly clamored out into the halls, the seemingly long Wednesday finally coming to a close. Now she just had to pick up Charles and get him home, and then run off to Delights, where she'd "assist" Lexi with her job, although it was more of helping Lexi run Delights while her co-worker either slacked off or never came.
All she had to do was step out of the doors that contained the students of Carter High, and her day would be instantly better. Right?
Wrong.
