"Enough with the pity parties for me. I'm fine, really."
Midtown High School, October 2016-
It was only a week into Alison's sentence in her wheel chair and she was already sick of it. All of the stares at her while she was rolling down the hallways of Midtown, all the condolences on her injury getting tiring.
Her backpack in her lap, Alison rolled into the high school. She was thankful that today was Friday. She could have a whole entire weekend to herself, and the weekend to hang out with Charles.
Moving through the halls, Alison felt short. Everything seemed bigger, and taller. She was even shorter than the people that she normally toppled in height. Ali felt like an ant in a field of boots. Or just Ant Man in a normal world when he shrank down in size.
The school news was playing once again, interviewing the decathlon team on the experience in the elevator, and the aftermath. The kids chimed a cringey thank you to the Spider-Man, and didn't discuss the incident in which Alison fell.
It all made sense of course, and Ali was kind of grateful she wasn't being mentioned in it. The less you were recognized in high school, the better, right?
Ali's thoughts began to wander as she smoothly rode through the hallways, blocking out the awkward newscast. She thought about maybe making food with Charles out of the basket Mr. Stark gifted the family. Running through the halls, clearly in a rush to get somewhere, someone bumped into Alison.
The person, racing through the crowded halls, turned around, skidding to a stop. They wanted to see who they ran into, and Alison wanted to know who ran into her as well. It was Flash.
"Oh look, it's Accident Alison. Too unimportant for even the Spider-Man to save her." Flash sneered, looking at her with a disgusted glare. He straightened his mustard Midtown blazer. Flash was still wearing the ugly thing, as some type of bragging rights about being on the winning decathlon team.
"Thanks Flash." Alison rolled her eyes, resisting the urge to roll her wheelchair over his toes. "That really just puts the cherry on top of a great week." Her face crinkled in disgust at the boy. "Now if you'll excuse me I have a class to walk to." She began to wheel away, trying to ignore the boy.
"As if you can even walk!" Flash hollered at the girl, thinking that the joke was funny. "See, that's a joke because-"
Skylar, who has just bounded through the doors, slapped Flash on the back. "I think she gets it, ass." She seemed defensive, almost snarling at the high school boy.
Flash threw his hands up, pretending to look innocent. "Look, Skylar, I can explain what I was-"
"No. You were picking on my friend." Skylar interrupted. "There's no explaining to do about that. So just shut your mouth."
Alison turned her head around, looking over at her friend gratefully. "Thanks man." She smiled a little, watching her friend walk up to her.
"Of course." Skylar laughed, taking ahold of the handles on the back of the wheelchair. "I'm always going to stick up for you." She started to walk Alison down the hallway.
"Oh my gosh." Alison snorted, leaning her head on the back of the seat to stare at Skylar upside down. "That's so cliche. I can't believe you just said that."
"Well, I am the queen of cliches." Skylar flipped her hair with one hand, still pushing the chair.
"Are not." Alison protested, her head going back to its normal position. "You are the queen of comebacks."
"I can't argue with that." Skylar laughed, a smile forming on her face. "After all, I am a Stark. Being kings and queens is what we do."
"Right, right." Alison sucked in a breath. "Because you're always a queen at everything, Stark 2.0." She rolled her eyes, teasing Skylar, knowing that she would tick her friend off.
"Oh shut up." Skylar smacked Alison's shoulder. "The joke's been taken too far, now it's not funny." She whined, pulling the Alison up to her locker.
"Great." Alison looked up at her locker. "Can you- you know, help me?" She gestured up at her locker.
Skylar nodded, grabbing Alison's bag and placing it in her locker. "I'm surprised you keep yours unlocked all the time." She shut her friend's locker door, punching in the code again.
"Well, it makes it easier than opening it in a hurry. If you just do it at the end when you're shutting it, opening the locker is so much easier." Alison explained, trying to sound as formal and logical as possible. "Logic."
"I guess that makes sense." Skylar scrunched her nose. "Kinda." She paused for a moment, opening up her own locker right next to Alison's. "Actually, no, I don't."
Alison gave an exasperated sigh. "You will just never know, or understand the genius that is my mind."
"Of course I won't." Skylar retorted, ruffling Alison's hair. "Because Marnell genius is too much for a Stark to handle."
"Let's just get to class," Alison rolled her chair away from the lockers, her important binders in her lap. "We've got a chemistry test to study for!"
Racing down the hallways, Alison passed by Peter and Ned, who were having a conversation about being a famous and nobody knowing that you're a superhero.
Giving an eye roll for the fifth time in the early day, Alison kept moving towards class. Maybe this Friday would get better by the end of the day.
NEWSFLASH-
The day didn't get any better. In fact, it almost got worse. Alison wasn't doing any good in chemistry, or math. Even Yearbook, her favorite class, was filled with people trying to baby her and coddle her. And Alison was sick of it.
So when she got to history for that day, Ali was grateful. Something that she could focus on with Skylar. Smiling as she wheeled into the room, Alison looked over at Skylar, who was waving her over.
Skylar was in the back of the class, next to the wheelchair accessible desk they had placed in for people like Alison. "Hey twerp! Get on over here!"
Alison gave a roll of her eyes, wheeling down the open aisle. People moved their backpacks from the row, eyeing Alison cautiously. It was almost like they didn't want to catch the "disease" Ali carried, of being in a wheelchair.
Giving a small sigh, Alison made it to the back seat she was now designated for. "Thanks Stark 2.0," Alison slapped Skylar's shoulder. "That gives me so much self esteem."
"Aw." Skylar pulled Alison's books out of her lap, slamming them on her desk. "That's what I'm here for. Now let's learn about-" She crammed her head to see what was on the board, "The Battle Of New York. Cool."
Ali sighed. "Just great. Another fun time in history class." She sank into her seat, listening to the teacher begin his lecture.
"The Battle fo New York," The teacher began, looking down at his podium. "Was the first major battle in which the Avengers were formed."
The scribbling of pencils could be heard, as many kids were taking notes. Alison was among them, but Skylar was just chewing a piece of gum. Skylar would probably get the notes from Alison later.
"It involved around 150 people dead, and countless more injured." The teacher pressed on. "The Chitauri aliens who attacked were under the leadership of a demigod named Loki."
Alison looked uncomfortable in her seat. She knew that her mom was on the count of the dead list, and Ali fidgeted in her seat. The teacher droned on about the Battle Of New York.
Skylar glanced over at her friend, popping a bubble. "Hey, you ok?" She leaned back in her seat, her blank sheet of paper now visible.
"Peachy." Alison replied through gritted teeth, tapping her pencil on the desk. All she really wanted to do was get out of the class. It was her last of the day.
"Alrighty." Skylar threw her hands up in a nonchalant way. "Whatever you say Professor X." She teased, cracking a small smile.
"The Battle was quickly stopped by the Avengers, although billions upon billions of dollars of damage were caused." The teacher summarized. The bell to end class rang, the class going by extremely quickly.
Alison gave a breath of relief, and so did Skylar. They could revisit the topic in history some other day, or never. Their teacher was rather forgetful in that sense.
"Remember class, fill out the worksheet I gave you on the Battle. It's due after the three-day weekend. And just because it's homecoming next week doesn't mean that I won't expect this due." The teacher chided, sitting back in his seat. "Have a good weekend."
Students began to scramble out of the class, ready for the weekend. Alison was one of the most eager ones of all, ready to go make a mess of their kitchen with Charles and visit the comics store.
All she had to do now was get home. And that wouldn't be so hard, right? After all, she was a superhero. Alison would make it through somehow.
