i. a new regime

low-flying panic attack;
❛ BRINGER OF DEATH ❜ ↷ fate
❝ it's silva ❞

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Sabrina thought that Rosalind's way of teaching was inhumane. For the last four months, classes were absolute torture. Especially for Bloom who still had no idea had to properly use her powers outside of battle.

Watching her get electrocuted by a third-year fairy every time she failed to defend herself was starting to get too much. When Bloom did manage to get out enough fire to strike back, she refused to and simply walked back to her seat.

Clearly disappointed by that, Rosalind would call Sabrina to step forward every time Bloom failed to do what she asked of her. She knew that Sabrina would never fail at striking back because when she conjured the fear and the shadows there was no stopping her. She hated the way that her classmates started looking at her after she used the fear a mind fairy had of spiders to beat her. They looked afraid. And it made Sabrina sick to her stomach.

The only thing that made her feel better was the fact that the rest of her roommates disliked Rosalind as much as she had. She didn't trust her one bit despite the liking she took for both her and Bloom. She assumed that they were easy to manipulate. Bloom because she was still afraid of her own powers and Sabrina because she lost the only person who taught her how to control them.

Sabrina decided to let her believe that she was vulnerable enough to put her trust in her. But she knew that Dowling going missing was not a coincidence and she also knew that students going missing wasn't either.

"The middle of the pack. I have been evaluating students over the past month, and that's where you land, Bloom." Rosalind looked away from the redhead that was facing around the room and then at the dark-haired girl on the couch. "You, Sabrina, are getting better and better at expressing your abilities every day."

"It's better than the bottom, Bloom." Sabrina told her friend, ignoring the words of the Headmistress in favor of trying to lift the frown off of her face.

Bloom nodded, a sheepish smile tugging on her lips at her words. "I try my best."

"Bullshit." Rosalind said blankly, "You two transformed last year. Turned the school upside down, looking for answers. You're powerful. This is a choice." She stood up and crossed her hands over her chest and gave her a knowing look.

"When Dowling was headmistress, I was doing really well." Bloom vaguely said and sat down next to Sabrina.

Rosalind nodded in understanding. "Loyalty is important. It should be valued. Yours is misplaced. Farah ran, Bloom. I don't know if she was scared of the consequences of locking me under the school or if she just simply saw the writing on the wall when Luna reinstated me, but she ran."

"I thought that she was declared missing." Sabrina retorted with a raised eyebrow, trying to make her tone less sharp and dumber. "Dowling loved Alfea. She wouldn't have just ran. The Solarian Army is still looking."

"They called off the search." Rosalind hesitantly informed her. "It was an egregious waste of resources."

Sabrina was happy that she was no longer looking at them because there was no way of hiding the anger mixed with disbelief on her face. 𝘈 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘴?

Bloom didn't even bother to hide her disbelief. "And you don't care?"

"I don't give one single fuck. She and Saul left me a school of weak children, unprepared for the threats we face."

"What threats?" Bloom asked with furrowed eyebrows while Sabrina was biting her lip almost hard enough to taste blood to keep herself from talking. "No one's seen a Burned One since we took them down."

Rosalind gave her an amused look. "And you think that's the most dangerous thing out there? The Otherworld isn't like where you grew up. You have no idea of the kind of nightmares that exist here, but I do. And it is my job to prepare you to fight them. A job Farah and Saul were unqualified for. The old regime is gone, girls."

"But, Silva ── "

Sabrina was quickly cut off, "Saul Silva is being brought to trial at this very moment for his crimes. So, at the risk of repeating myself, the old regime is gone. It's time to embrace the new one."

-

Sabrina liked to think that she was better at hiding how close she was to breaking than Bloom was. Have her nightmares been slowly getting better since the transformation? Sure. Has she gotten ten times better at controlling her powers than before? Definitely. Did she and Raven go back to being friends? Yes. Was she still using sex as a coping mechanism like the emotionally unavailable fairy she was? Maybe, but only when Tecna was not around to judge her for it.

Regulus Rey was sweet and nice and funny in a dorky kind of way. He was a fire fairy and Brandon's roommate so getting involved with him was not the best idea but it wasn't anything serious anyway. Plus, if Brandon was allowed to sleep with her best friend then she was allowed to have his roommate as her fuck buddy.

Speaking of Stella and Brandon, when Sky and Stella broke up, the latter tried to finally talk to Brandon about them and he shocked everyone by saying that he didn't think he was ready for a relationship. That caused Stella to spiral and cut her hair above her shoulders after being depressed for two days. Brandon, on the other hand, actually looked happy and carefree after he told Sky about him and Stella and got everything off of his shoulders.

"So, you can pick up on what my biggest fear is?" Regulus asked, narrowing his eyes at her curiously while she was trying to finish her History of Magic essay.

Sabrina sighed and glared down at the piece of paper. "Yes."

He was silent for a couple of seconds and she just managed to think of another thing to write when he spoke up again, "Can we try it? Brandon won't be back in a while."

"In a sec." She muttered as she wrote down two more sentences to finish the essay off. When she was done, she set the pen down and raised an eyebrow at him. "You want me to try and find your biggest fear? Really?"

His eyes were wide and eager when he rapidly nodded, "Definitely. I haven't had the chance to see your powers up close yet."

Sabrina did not even have to make up excuses because her eyes lit up with a text notification on the screen. She immediately picked it up and felt her heart skip a beat when she saw it.

𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻:
𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴
𝗜'𝗺 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘆

She swallowed and her eyes flickered to Regulus' oblivious face. Her relationship with Riven has been strictly platonic since everything that happened. She didn't want to give him false hope and chose to watch him mess around with Dane on the sidelines. Sabrina was perfectly aware of how big of a hypocrite she was because of the jealousy she felt when she saw them but she could only guess that that was how Riven felt when he watched her with Beatrix and Regulus.

She opened her mouth to lie straight to Regulus' face but stopped when she received another text.

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗹:
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀
𝗜'𝗺 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲

"I actually have to go." Sabrina said, her eyes wide and glued to her screen. "I'll come back for my book late if that's okay, but I have to go meet the girls now. It's urgent."

"That's fine." Regulus assured her with a warm grin. "I'll see you later."

Sabrina really had to stop going for people who got attached too easily. Especially after Beatrix still insisted on them hanging out despite the fact that the Jackson girl "moved on". That girl was a menace so it was way too hard to get rid of her. Especially after she took her position as the Headmistress' assistant.

-

When Stella said that she was waiting for Sabrina "outside" she actually meant literally in front of Brandon and Regulus' dorm room which probably only meant that she was hoping to catch Brandon there but Sabrina chose not to comment on that.

"They're sending him to Polaris." Stella announced the second they reached the girls in front of the school.

Bloom frowned but didn't look too surprised. "So Beatrix wasn't lying."

"The Frozen North?" Tecna's mouth opened in disbelief and horror. "A death sentence would be less painful."

Sabrina shook her head and sat down between Stella and Musa. "First Dowling, now Silva. This really is the new regime."

"She could do it to my dad anytime." Terra frowned at the thought, her worry for her father growing each day. He was incredibly close with Dowling and Silva so if he stepped one foot out of line, Rosalind could eliminate him too.

"Sam says he's putting on a good face for Rosalind." Musa told her, "He's not happy about it, but ── "

"Isn't what he did self-defense?" Bloom asked, cutting the mind fairy off. "I mean, Andreas would have killed him if he didn't fight back. Who's his lawyer?"

Sabrina sighed and squinted at Bloom, "Bloom, we aren't Muggles. Going to prison and getting a sentence doesn't involve courtroom drama. There was a tribunal, then a decree from Queen Luna."

"But if your mom made the decree, can she not unmake it?" Terra asked Stella curiously.

Stella shook her head. "Even if we were speaking, she's not in the habit of changing her mind. It's happening tomorrow. Andreas is leading the transfer."

"We have to do something."

"Well, historically, letter-writing campaigns have proved very effective." Terra suggested, her face quickly falling. "But they do take time."

"I'm not so much thinking in the letter-writing campaign realm." Bloom shook her head, "I'm . . . I'm thinking something active."

Musa's eyes widened. "Felony-wise, going against Solaria is a pretty big step up from anything we got into last term."

"Last year we broke more than twenty school rules." Sabrina said, squinting between her friends. "Going against Solaria is something so much bigger than that."

"And we can't help Silva if we get sent to Polaris too." Tecna added while nervously messing around with rings around her fingers.

"But it's Silva." Bloom shot back, making the pair of best friends speechless. Silva was an amazing teacher and father figure. If Sky found out that the person that raised him got sent to Polaris, he would be crushed. "He is our only other link to Dowling. To how things used to be."

Terra nodded. "If we let them banish him, how long is it gonna be before they find a reason to do the same with my dad?"

Musa squinted between Terra and Bloom, "Just to be clear, we are talking, like, full jailbreak, right?"

They all simultaneously nodded and Stella commented, "Okay, obviously, we can't tell Aisha because she will try and stop us."

"Yeah, Bloom already told me." They all snapped their heads around to see Aisha standing behind them with a grin on her face.

She sat down next to Terra and Bloom said, "If there is one thing I learned last term, it's; listen to Aisha because she's usually right."

"And for the record," Aisha chimed in, "I was against realizing Rosalind because it was a dumb idea. This, well, it's still a dumb idea but at least if I plan it, it will work. So, care to put your magic where your mouth is?"

a/n: we're back!!

adding regulus and completely ditching beatrix and sabrina in so I could have stellatrix happen for a bit is the biggest sacrifice that I've ever made

I would've made this chapter longer but I wanted to publish it this weekend - but there is a small chance that I'll update again tomorrow
