Chapter 20: Greaser

"Today. Today? Today," Simon repeated hesitantly out-loud to himself.
He stood in the boys west wing bathroom, the cleaner one that no one seemed to actually use. Squeaking along the tile his shoes scuffed the ground in awkwardness. The male was nervous, more than nervous. He was terrified.
"Gel," He told himself, quickly grabbing the sphere like container from his bag.
The brunette twisted the cap open with an easy movement. Looking up once more into the mirror, someone else stood in his place where he should be. The Simon everyone knew and loved. The real Simon. Instead, a replica stood in his place. A lanky boy with a leather biker jacket, contacts, a white t-shirt, jeans, and high top sneakers. Who was he? Taking the gel in a swift movement of his two fingers, the male slicked back his unruly dark brown hair to the point where he appeared as a guy hooker from Grease.
"There!" He smiled to what he liked to call, Simon 2.0.
Then his grin faded when a question dawned upon him. Would she approve? Would Simon walk up to Gertrude, the red-head he always loved, and still be her Prince Charming even with this get up? His eyes lingered to the gel container that laid loosely in his hand. He nodded to himself. This is what he wants. This is what he has wanted for years. This is what he got. The bathroom door creaked open, Simon whipping his head to it to see who came in.
A tall, buff guy walked in with a gleaming red varsity jacket. Ched Damson. Of all people that had to enter the bathroom at that moment. Ched looked up at Simon with a confused expression on his face. All Ched could do was question. Simon wearily stared at Ched, hoping he wouldn't pummel him at ay moment. He didn't.
"Who are you?" He asked with a slight trailing of his words.
Simon cleared his throat, thinking that he changed himself so much that even the meat head Ched couldn't notice who he really was behind everything. The lanky boy straightened his jacket while twisting the cap back on the gel container. He acted calm, collected like he didn't care that the person questioning him could kill him and get away with it.
"Shade," Simon stated, "Names Shade. I'm new."
"I can tell," Ched said almost immediately. He was closer not, about a sink distance away from Simon. "You from some broken neighborhood or something?"
"No...?" Simon replied, with more of a question in his voice than a statement.
Ched turned to a sink mirror, pulling at his face to look carefully at it. Maybe checking for more pimples or something. Simon honestly didn't care what he was doing. He packed up his stuff, heading for the door with his bag slung over one shoulder.
"You should join the football team," Ched stated, still checking himself out in the mirror. Simon stopped, not turning around to reply with a 'what'. "You look pretty built to be a linebacker, and the team needs a new one. Might get more chance of getting hot senior chics if you're real desperate."
Simon gulped. Maybe Gertrude could notice his new and improved stature if he was on the team. If that didn't work, then maybe he did have a chance to get senior girls to notice him too. A smile crept to his face with glee.
"I'll think about it," he stated cooly before leaving the bathroom for good. A grin plastered to his face as he went down the hall. Was this opportunity a good thing, or a bad thing?
