Chapter 10 | Mind Over Matter

Sarah's POV

Surprisingly enough, Stephen did have an open mind. When he had first seen my eyes he was a little scared and confused, but after I had told him everything was alright, he calmed down a little bit. He started to ask me questions then; but I only answered a few for the time being. I had only told him what I was and about other creatures; nothing more. I didn't tell him who was a werewolf and all of the other details, but more of an overview of the whole situation.

"So...you're a kitsune," he says slowly, staring at the floor. "And there are other things out there like werewolves, nogitsunes, vampires-"

"No vampires," I say quickly. "Well, none that we know of."

"We?" Stephen says, catching my mistaken word.

I take a deep breath. "Y-Yeah. Kira is a kitsune as well."

Stephen grabs his head. "Is there anyone else like you that I know?"

I ponder for a moment, not sure whether or not I should tell him about our mother and my friends yet. I decided against this; mostly because I didn't want to bombard him with so much information in such little amount of time. I needed to wait until he's had time to process this.

"Not that I know of," I say quietly, twiddling my thumbs around.

Stephen is silent for a moment as he thinks, more than likely trying to come up with more questions. "So that's why you've never gotten sick? Why you've never been hurt..."

"Exactly," I say, nodding my head slightly. Stephen takes a deep breath as his head falls into his hands, which only makes me worry even more for him. I knew that I was doing the right thing, but I hated to see him stress out about this.

"So that's how you're back too?" Stephen says, looking up at me. I stare at him for a moment, knowing that I needed to tell him about the nogitsune. It wasn't that I was worried about telling him, but it was more of the fact of how ashamed I was because of it. I still felt like it was all of my fault, and I didn't really want to think back to what had exactly happened. I wanted to forget it.

"Remember that nogitsune thing I was telling you about?" I say, my voice drifting off. Stephen nods before I continue. "Well, it possessed me along with Stiles."

"What?" Stephen says, his voice rising before he pieces it all together. "So that's why you were acting so strange..."

I nod stiffly as I look at the floor. "Yeah. I did things I don't really want to talk about, and I hate myself for it every day."

"It wasn't your fault, Sarah," Stephen says as he looks up at me. "Wait, were you the ones who killed-"

"Yeah," I say, not needing to hear a name to know that I had done it. Even if I wasn't the one holding the knife, I was still apart of it.

Stephen shakes his head. "Even Allison?"

"Even Allison," I repeat, my eyes getting a little cloudy. "And Aiden and Stiles..."

Stephen's eyes flick up. "Stiles too?"

I nod my head, not being able to form any words into my mouth. My heart starts to race as I think back to that moment; how I had felt when that sword had went through Stiles. The look on his face still haunts my dreams; along with the way Scott had looked at me as well. It was a look of pure hatred, and I knew that I had deserved it. I deserved to live with what I had done. The pain, the regret, and the despair. I deserved it all.

"It wasn't a group of people who killed them," I say, my eyes glued to the floor. "It was me."

The room is completely silent as Stephen places his hand on my thigh, trying to give me some comfort. "What happened to you then?"

"I tried to run...I tried to get away after they had killed the nogitsune," I say, remembering feeling the adrenaline. That was the moment I knew I had lost; when I knew that I was dead. "But something stopped me."

"What stopped you?" Stephen asks, but I didn't want to tell him. I knew he deserved to know, but I wasn't prepared to tell him. I wasn't prepared to tell him that he wasn't my brother.

My eyes trail to Stephen's eyes as I gulp, taking a deep breath. "What stopped me was-"

I don't get to finish before there's a loud knocking downstairs, causing my head to whip towards the door. Stephen must not have heard it because he seemed to be confused, but that's not what I was focusing on.

"Stiles?" I hear Vanessa say, sounding completely and utterly confused. My body snaps into motion as I walk out of Stephen's room, ignoring his comments. I knew that I needed to get to Stiles; especially since I knew he wouldn't bother me unless it was important. Plus something was almost drawing me to him...like it was the only thing that mattered right now.

"Hey there Mrs. Manchester," Stiles says as I walk down the stairs, his eyes trailing up to me. "I'm here to see Sarah."

I walk up beside Vanesa as she stares at the two of us. "He's alive too?"

I nod my head. "Yeah...what's wrong Stiles?"

Stiles turns to me, a worried yet awkward look on his face. "I had found a puppy on the side of the road and it seems to be sick...very sick. I figured that maybe Sarah could help me out-"

"Stiles..." I say, mentally face palming. I knew that he was referring to Derek, but he could have made up a better excuse than that. "Can't you just take it to the Vet?"

Stiles furrows his eyebrows slightly at me, a little angry that I had just turned down his story plan. "Uh, the Vet's closed."

Vanesa looks back at me, a very confused look on her face. "Can someone please explain all of this to me?"

Stiles perks up a little. "Well Sarah and I-"

"We'll tell you later," I say as I start to walk out of the door, whispering into Stiles' ear. "Go."

Vanesa shouts from the doorway. "Sarah! You can't just leave like this-"

"I'll be back, I promise! This is important," I say, not daring to look back. As bad as I felt about leaving them like this again, I knew that Stiles needed my help at the moment. That was the bigger priority of mine.

Vanesa sighs before she shuts the door, it almost at a slam. Stiles glances over his shoulder before speaking lowly to me. "I'm so sorry about that."

"I'm sorry that you couldn't come up with a better story," I say, rolling my eyes. "Never be an author; got it?"

Stiles scoffs. "But-"

"Can you just explain to me what's really going on right now?" I say as we near the Jeep.

Stiles looks forwards. "Scott put me in charge of watching Derek and I might need your help. Expecially since he doesn't know the truth and he might rip my face off if he finds out."

"So you'd rather him rip my face off instead?" I say, raising one eyebrow.

Stiles scoffs. "No! I know that if he even came after you, you'd take him down in a heartbeat. No way would he be able to stand up to you."

"Okay Stiles..." I say, not really sure what he's talking about. I mean, I know that I could defend myself (and protect Stiles which was a definite) but Deaton had said that Derek is a lot stronger right now. I wasn't really for sure if I could stand a chance against him, if I needed to fight him.

I walk around the side of the Jeep as I open the door, looking inside and see a young Derek sitting in the backseat. He stares at me for a moment before looking back at Stiles, a ticked off expression on his face. I could tell that Stiles didn't tell him about me.

"Who's this?" he says, pointing towards me. "You didn't tell me about a Kasai Haiburiddo."

I widen my eyes as my mouth falls open. "A what?"

Derek turns and looks at me, wrinkling his nose up. "A fire hybrid. You're something special, unlike the normal fire kitsune."

I grow interested. "What do you mean I'm a hybrid?"

Derek rolls his eyes. "It doesn't mean you are specifically a hybrid. You just possess the powers of a fox and some of a wolf. It's very rare. I've only heard about people like you in stories."

Stiles and I share a look; both of us very confused. Stiles looks back at Derek. "What else do you know?"

"I know that they don't really belong anywhere," Derek snaps, glaring back at me. "They don't classify as neither a fox or a wolf."

They don't really belong anywhere.

My heart drops for a moment as I look at the ground, his words sinking into me deep. I normally wouldn't have been this affected by it, but it just seemed to make sense to me. I mean, my mother had practically given me up, my brother isn't my brother, my father left me, and I didn't really seem to fit in when it came to my adoptive family. I didn't really fit in anywhere.

"Shut your mouth," Stiles says, pointing at Derek. I guess he could tell it really cut me deep. "Besides, your breath smells like death too."

Derek furrows his eyebrows as I look up, a little confused as to how Stiles could smell his breath; unless he was just saying that to further prove his statement. I smile slightly at Stiles before I get back onto topic.

"So what are we doing with him now?" I ask before Stiles looks back at Derek.

He nods towards a house; Scott's house. "Scott told me to bring him here; so that's where we are. Come on, Derek."

Derek doesn't budge. "Is she coming with us?"

Stiles pops his tongue out of anger. "Yes she is, and you aren't going to complain. Got it?"

"Whatever," Derek mumbles to himself before he gets out of the Jeep, walking up the sidewalk to Scott's house. Stiles and I fall behind as we follow after him, the two of us whispering lowly.

"Just ignore him," Stiles says, trying to make me feel better. "He's been snappy all day."

"What's new there," I groan before we step into Scott's house, but that was when I heard something in the kitchen. For a moment I was hoping that it was Melissa, but instead I heard a man's voice.

"Scott?" The man says...but it was Scott's father. Great.

I couldn't remember the last time I had seen him, but I do remember how big of a douche he is. No way did I want to see him again, let alone speak to him.

Stiles and I walk into the kitchen and see him setting the table, Derek watching as well. He looks up at us before frowning, sad to see that we weren't Scott. "Where's Scott?"

"Uh, he's out," Stiles says, not saying anything more.

Scott's father raises his eyebrow. "Out doing what?"

"Bowling," Stiles says, licking his lips slowly. "He's out bowling."

Scott's father groans. "I told him tonight was dinner night."

"Well I guess he forgot," Stiles says, sounding a little rude. I could tell he didn't like him either.

Scott's father looks over at Derek. "Who's your friend."

"Miguel," Stiles says while patting Derek's back, smiling faintly. "His name is Miguel."

He walks over and sticks his hand out. "Nice to meet you Miguel. Would you all like to join me for dinner?"

"Yes-"

"Nah-"

We all look at one another, Stiles and I both being the ones saying no while Derek said yes. Scott's father takes this as a yes as he walks over to the table, already saying something to start a conversation.

This was going to me a long meal.

------

Stiles' POV

I wonder if maybe I could stab myself with that chopstick right there and get out of this dinner. Or maybe I can tell Derek everything so he will start a fight. Hell, I didn't care what I did. I just wanted to get out of this dinner.

At least Sarah is here though. I could tell by the look on her face that she doesn't like him either, but I mean, who does like him? Not even his own son likes him...

The only good thing out of this was that I get free food, which is something I'll never pass up. Throughout the years of growing up, you learn that if you ever get offered food, you take it. I may have told McCall that I didn't want to stay and eat (which I didn't) but I had planned to just sneak back down here later and take some of the food anyways. That plan would have worked a lot better than this one.

The room is silent as I take a bite of my food, which happened to be Chinese. I just started to swallow it before I heard something loud in my ears; which sounded like a heart beat. My eyebrows furrow as I look around, trying to figure out what I was hearing. No one else seemed to be hearing it, so it has to be just me. How strange.

"Where are you from, Miguel?" McCall says really loud, causing me to practically jump out of my seat. Everyone looks over at me with a concerned face, wondering why I had jumped. I didn't really care about McCall and Derek's glances, but Sarah's glance really concerned me.

She mouths "are you okay?" as Derek and McCall talk about random things that I didn't care about. I gulp before I nod my head, but I honestly didn't feel okay. Something felt off, but I wasn't sure what it was.

I just hoped it wasn't something bad.

Uh oh. What's going on with Stiles? I know of course, but I'm not going to be telling you just yet :)
