Chapter 19 | Game Changer
Sarah's POV
"So, did you find anything out from your mother?" Stiles asks me as we jump out of the Jeep, heading towards the Lacrosse field. Tonight was a scrimmage against Liam's old school, which was one of the reasons why I wanted to come tonight. I knew something was bound to happen.
I sigh. "Nothing. It was just a waste of time. I mean, she looked terrible, Stiles. I guess I might have done some good with going and seeing her, but she's such a mess. She told me that she has been researching for information about us, but she hasn't found anything. I sort of feel as if it's my fault..."
Stiles looks up at me quickly, a startled look on his face. "Research? What did she find?"
"Nothing that will do us any good," I mutter, knowing that whatever happened to Stiles and I kept getting farther and farther down the list of "Things To Do".
Stiles licks his lips as he hikes his duffle bag up higher on his shoulder. "Well, at least you got to miss school today."
"That is true," I say, remembering Stiles telling me about the recent discovered information. Those things being a killer on the lacrosse team, who was a kid named Garret, along with Liam acting up and us finding out that he's I.E.D. Just like any other average day I suppose.
Stiles and I are about to part ways, since he had to go to the bench and I had to go to the stands, but before we do, I stop and turn towards him, cocking my head slightly as I smiled. "Good luck tonight."
Stiles smirks down at me. "I'll try my best to make sure a certain freshman doesn't get stabbed by one of our teammates."
I smile faintly as I scan Stiles' jersey once again, just now realizing how hot he looked in it. "You know, that uniform looks really good on you. Red is definitely your color."
"Red? I've always liked the color blue," Stiles says as he looks down at himself. "Besides, this is more of a maroon color-"
"Can you just take my compliment and not complain?" I laugh at him as I shake my head.
Stiles rolls his eyes slightly before he presses his lips to my own, it being a soft yet passionate kiss. My heart skips a beat before Stiles pulls away from me, his amber eyes scanning my face. I screamed at myself to tell Stiles how I felt right there and then, but something held me back yet again. Like I had said, saying I love you would be huge for me. I had to wait for the right moment if I were to say it. And right now wasn't that moment...not yet.
"Be careful," I say to him before he nods his head, turning and walking off towards the bench where Scott and Kira were sitting. I was excited to watch Kira play tonight as well, since she is the first girl to ever play for Beacon Hills. I knew that she was going to kick some ass.
I take a deep breath before I turn towards the bleachers, needing to figure out where I was going to sit and with who. I knew that Lydia and Malia weren't here because they were out trying to figure out the next password for the list, so that just about ruled out all of my friends. I had just about went and sat by myself before my eyes landed on Mason; another freshman that I knew was friends with Liam. Maybe I should go introduce myself.
I pull my jacket closer to me before I march up the stands, heading towards Mason, who was sitting closer to the edge. He was sitting beside a dark skinned girl, one who I've seen a couple times in school. I'm pretty sure that she's a freshman as well, but she could pass for someone older.
"Hi," I say with a smile on my face, looking down at Mason. He looks up at me with confusion at first but soon a smile finds it's way on his face as well. The girl just looks up at me with a cocky expression.
Mason tuns a little so that he can face me. "Hey, you're a friend of Liam's, right?"
I nod my head. "Yeah, I was wondering if it was okay if I could sit with you guys?"
Mason glances at the girl, expecting some type of signal for approval, but the girl just stares ahead and ignores me. He turns back to me. "Yeah, it's no problem."
I smile once again at Mason before I sit on the opposite side of him, so that he was sitting in between the girl and me. I had an odd feeling about that girl, and I wasn't sure why. She seemed a little rude, or maybe she was just shy. Maybe I should try and talk to her.
I lean forwards slightly as I look over at the girl, raising my eyebrows. "So what's your name?"
"Violet," she says coldly, still not making any eye contact with me.
I nod my head, sulking slightly. "My name is Sarah."
"Sarah?" Violet says as she finally looks at me, cocking her head slightly. She seemed much more interested now that I had mentioned my name. "Sarah Sterling?"
I furrow my eyebrows. "Um, I guess you can say that. That's the name my parents gave to me before we were adopted. How do you know that?"
Violet looks very interested, it almost creeping me out. "Oh, I just heard it somewhere. I might be thinking about a different Sarah."
"Probably," I say, my voice fading. "I haven't been called that since the fire..."
Mason looks at me sincerely. "I'm sorry for your loss."
"It's okay," I say, feeling terrible that I couldn't really tell them that my mother wasn't dead. "Stephen and I are okay."
Mason and Violet don't get to say anything more before the whistle is blown, indicating that the game is starting. We all get comfortable again as we look onto the field, watching everyone run out to get started. My eyes search for Stiles before I finally see him get into position, his gaze focused on the ball that was about to go into play. As he waits for everyone to get ready, I notice him look up in the stands for me, finally spotting me sitting next to Mason and Violet. He waves slightly at me as I wave back, causing Mason to turn and look at me.
"Are you dating him?" Mason asks as Violet leans forwards, looking at me for an answer.
My cheeks begin to turn red. "Yeah."
"My boyfriend plays too," Violet says cheerfully, pointing down on the field. "He's number seven."
My eyes scan the field before I find a number seven positioned farther in front of Stiles. "Who is it?"
Violet smirks as she totally has heart eyes. "Garret."
No. No, no, no, no, no.
I force a smile onto my face, knowing that I had to play this off. "He's a lucky guy."
I almost barf as I say this, knowing what the guy does in his free time. A part of me wondered if she knew too, but she acted as if she didn't have any clue. She stares down at him all goggly eyed as my heart races, feeling as if I was sitting in a lion's den. For some reason, I felt like something else was happening that I didn't know about.
The whistle blows again as the game starts, Davenport prep getting the ball first. A tall boy gets the ball before running towards the goal, doing some type of spin move as he throws it into the goal. I groan since they already have got a point, but that was before my eyes direct their attention to another part of the field. I furrow my eyebrows when I see two players run up and clothesline Liam, knocking him to ground as if it was on purpose.
"What the hell," I mumble as Mason extends his arm, standing and yelling down towards the field.
"Are you kidding me!" he screams as Violet and I look up at him with wide eyes. "You're seriously not going to call that?"
I watch Liam stand up and rip his gloves off, about to beat the living crap out of those two boys. Mason totally misses this as he watches the ref, who wasn't even paying any attention. The guy was turned around talking to the other coach. "Mason, sit down-"
"Hey ref!" Mason yells as the guy looks up at him, narrowing his eyes. "Can I pet your seeing eye dog? Cause you're clearly blind!"
The ref doesn't say anything as he turns around and goes back into the game. I groan as I grab Mason's shirt and tug him back down so that he was sitting again. He's breathing heavily as he looks back over at his friend, who was now being contained by Scott and Stiles.
"He's fine," I say to Mason, trying to reassure him. "He's a tough kid."
Mason sighs. "I know, but that was just plain ridiculous. That had to be illegal."
"I don't know about that play, but that insult sure was," Violet groans as she looks down onto the field. I had to admit, that little remark Mason had made wasn't the best.
Mason shrugs Violet off as we all focus back into the game, watching them all get back into position. Scott was now competing for the ball as he faced the taller one that had made the goal, who was also the captain of the team. I focus my hearing on them as I zone everyone else out.
"I know you all want payback for what Liam did to you guys, but can't that just wait, please?"
"Sure."
"Really?"
"Ha, no."
The whistle is blown again as Scott snaps into action, getting the ball first and then tossing it to Kira. My heart starts to race as I watch my friend take off towards the goal, dodging everyone. I find myself standing and cheering her on as Coach yells at her to pass, but she was going for it. After all, she did have an open shot. In one swift movement, Kira turns and throws the ball into the goal, causing the whole crowd to erupt into cheers.
"Woohoo Kira!" I scream at the top of my lungs as she grins, walking over to Scott and practically jumping up and down. Mason stands up and screams with me as Violet stays sitting, seeming to be focused on something else that moment. I watch Kira bounce before Coach calls her over, causing her to run over with a huge grin on her face.
"Get on the bench, Kira."
"What? Why?"
"Because you didn't pass. This is a team effort Kira. It's not all about you."
My hands grow hot as I watch Kira's smile fade, causing her to sulk and walk towards the bench. Scott stares with sad eyes as Kira turns and sits on the bench, her eyes staring at her shoes. Coach's expression changes as he focuses back into the game, not caring that he had just benched the only player who has scored so far tonight.
"Put Kira back in!" I scream down at Coach, but it wasn't like he could hear me. If he could, I would make sure he heard some not so nice things. I wonder who crapped in his corn flakes this morning.
I grunt as I sit back down, furious that Coach just did that. It was stupid and pathetic. If it would have been any other player, then he would be ecstatic. But I guess just because she's a girl is why he did that, which makes no sense to me. Her gender shouldn't matter, but he was even the one to put her on the team. What an idiot.
The whistle blows again as Davenport takes the ball, running down the field and charging. I didn't care much about the game anymore, but instead I was focused on Garret and Liam. It was just when I laid my eyes on Liam when I saw the tall boy run into Liam, causing him to go flying up over him like he had done when Scott had tackled him that day in practice. I cringe as I hear bone break, along with the sound of a knife.
My legs work quicker than my ears as I bolt down from the bleachers, running onto the field. I didn't care what Coach or anyone else would say, I needed to see if everyone was alright. A couple of other people were rushing onto the field as well, doing the same thing as me.
I run up in front of Stiles and Scott as they aided Liam, who had his arm extended. My eyes widen when I see bone sticking out, it definetly being broken. I turn and look down at the taller boy as he stays down on the ground, groaning in pain.
"Sarah?" Stiles say to me, wondering why I was down here. I don't answer him as Scott looks up at Liam, concerned for his beta.
"How hard did you hit him?" he says, his eyes wide.
Liam shakes his head. "I didn't. He hit me."
"How could he have hit you that hard," I say as I stare at the bone.
Scott shakes his head as he places his hands on the broken bone. "It doesn't matter. Close your eyes; this is going to hurt."
Liam does as he's told as Scott pushes the bone back into place, it looking totally normal again. Liam lets out a slight groan of pain as we all sigh, knowing that we had just dodged yet another obstacle. I was just about to head back up into the stands before the sound of the knife comes across my ears again, causing all of our heads to whip towards Garret.
He's standing there with a smug look on his face, staring at the four of us. I narrow my eyes as he walks farther away from us, causing Scott to scan Liam. "Are you hurt? Did Garret cut you-"
"No, I'm fine," Liam says.
Scott shakes his head. "Then he missed."
"What do you mean?" Liam asks, his tone sounded petrified.
Scott licks his lips before speaking. "It's you Liam. You're the one he's after."
"Sarah!" I hear someone yell, that person being Coach. "Get off of the field!"
I groan as I turn around, yelling back at him. "What? Because I'm a girl?"
"What are you talking about?" he snaps at me as I walk past him, rolling my eyes. The guy totally was a meninist.
I start to march back up the stands, noticing that Violet was gone, before I hear Kira yell towards me, causing me to turn and walk back to the bench. She holds out her phone as I try to read what it says quickly, but she pulls it away before I have the chance to read it all.
"Lydia deciphered the key," she says in summary.
My eyes widen. "What? Am I on it?"
Kira shakes her head. "No, but someone else is."
"Who?"
Kira looks out towards the locker room. "Brett. They just took him to the locker room."
My eyes flick up the bleachers before I finally put two and two together. "And Violet is gone."
"Who's Violet?" Kira asks as she shoves her phone away.
I try to process all of this information quickly. "Garret's girlfriend. He's not after Liam; he's after Brett."
Kira finally figures it all out as she quickly stands up from the bench, beginning to take off towards the locker room. "Come on!"
She doesn't have to tell me twice before I'm bolting off right behind her, hearing a few people ask Kira where she was going. She doesn't answer any of them as I glance behind us, seeing that Scott and Stiles saw where we were going. It was kind of stupid that we were going to try and help Brett by ourselves, but I knew we could handle it. Us girls didn't need to have a boy to protect us all of the time.
Kira quickly pushes the door open as she runs into the locker room, stopping as soon as she stepped inside. I don't get to see her reason before I step inside myself, seeing a body lying there in the hall. I try to process everything before I hear the sound of sizzling across my ears, causing me to snap back into motion. I run around Kira as I head towards the sound, running into the locker room and turning the corner to see Violet standing there holding her necklace around Brett's neck, the string a bright red.
"What are you doing!" I scream as Brett gasps, the thermo wire about to slice right through his neck. Violet's face turns pale when she see's Kira and I, but I don't wait for her to reply. My eyes flash orange as I run forwards and grab Violet's arms, twisting them so that she lets go of the wire. The necklace's color dies as it falls on Brett's neck, giving him relief.
Violet falls backwards as I grab her by the neck and press her up against the lockers, my hands growing hot by the second. She gasps as she claws at my hand, the smell of burnt flesh coming across my nose. "Sarah, you're hurting me-"
"Now you know what it feels like," I grit as my eyes burn orange, rage behind them. Something took over me as I held Violet in the position; almost as if void was controlling me once again. It wasn't until Violet's eyes closed that I realized what I was doing, causing my hands to cool and for me to let her go. She collapses to the ground as she passes out, not dead. There were burn marks around her neck, but I couldn't care less.
I hear someone come running into the locker room then, myself turning to see that it was Scott and Stiles. They stare wide eyed at the scene in front of them before Stiles speaks, out of breath.
"What in the world happened here?"
