Chapter 2 | Reunion
"Can someone explain to me how you're both alive?" Melissa says as she drives down the road, the rain smacking against the windshield. She had the windshield wipers on, but they barely did any good.
I stare out the window as Stiles holds my hand tighter. "My mother brought me back, but I'm not sure about Stiles-"
"Woah woah," Stiles says, turning towards me. "Did you just say your mother?"
I nod stiffly. "Yeah, she came back right before I had died-"
I cut myself off before Stiles speaks again. "So your so called dead mother is back and she somehow manages to bring you back from the dead?"
I nod once again. "I guess so, but that doesn't explain how you're alive."
"That doesn't matter at the moment," Stiles says, shaking his head. "Where's your mother now?"
I look back slightly. "I was with her in the car back at the hospital before she ran inside for something; I'm not sure what though."
"We need to go back," Stiles says while looking at Melissa. "We need to get answers-"
"Stiles," I say, grabbing his hand tighter as well. My skin still felt as if it was burning in flames. "As much as I want answers out of her myself, there's something about her that I just can't put my finger on. She seems...different."
Stiles furrows his eyebrows before he reads my face. "You don't trust her."
"Not yet," I say, sighing. "Not until she explains herself. Trust me, I know she'll be back. Let's just wait until she comes to us."
Stiles nods as Melissa drives on. "She didn't tell you anything?"
I shake my head. "Nothing about bringing me back or how she was alive. All she kept telling me was that I should be glad that I was alive again..."
Stiles looks into my eyes, sending goosebumps down my arms. "Don't blame yourself for all of this, Sarah. If it's anyone's fault, it's mine-"
"No," I grit. "None of this is your fault. I was the one who let him in, I was the one who listened to him, and I was the one who killed you and that other man. It was all me, Stiles."
Stiles shakes his head. "It wasn't you-"
"It doesn't matter," I say, staring down at the ground. "I still did it. It was my hands that killed that man and you, no one else's."
Stiles starts to say something else, but Melissa cuts him off. "I think what he's trying to say Sarah is that just because it was your face that did all of the dirty work, doesn't mean that it was you. Yes, it may have looked like you on the outside, but it wasn't you on the inside. We all know that."
I take note of what she says, but before I can disagree with her, I look up and see that we were pulling into their driveway, reminding me of Scott. "What about Scott?"
Melissa furrows her eyebrows. "What about him?"
"He seemed to want me dead last time I saw him," I say, remembering the fire I had seen behind his eyes. It terrified me again.
Melissa shakes her head as she shuts the car off. "He'll be glad to see you, I know he will."
I gulp before we all get out of the car, myself walking ahead of the others. Melissa walks behind me as I walk first, Stiles being the last. I take a deep breath before I walk into their house, looking around for Scott. For a moment, I wondered if he was even home, but soon I saw him come walking around the corner, looking depressed as can be.
His hair was matted and he had a little bit of scruff going on, which made me cringe slightly. He had dark bags under his eyes and I could smell his breath from all the way across the room. I tense up slightly as he stares at me, not yet seeing Melissa or Stiles behind me.
For a moment, he seemed very confused as to why I was standing in his kitchen, but then that confusion turns into pure rage. His eyes burn red as his claws slowly begin to extend, his heart beginning to race.
"You," he grits as I take a step backwards, terrified of what he would do to me. "How are you alive? Wait--I don't care. You killed...you killed Stiles!"
"Scott wait-" I start to say as I hold my arms up, but I'm already too late. All I hear is growling and my heart beating in my ears as Scott comes over to me, wrapping his claws around my throat. I gasp as he throws me across the room, my body skidding to a halt in the living room.
"Scott!" I hear Melissa scream, but Scott doesn't listen. I look up dazily as I see Scott come tromping over to me, causing me to attempt to scramble away. I even tried to make myself hotter so he wouldn't touch me, but I was too weak from being resurrected and all.
I clench my teeth as Scott picks me up by the neck again, holding me up and staring me right in the eyes. My hands hold onto his wrist, trying to get more air into my lungs, but it wasn't working. Scott's eyes feel as if they're burning into me as he growls, shaking his head.
"Why should you be the one breathing?" he says, but I can tell that it's just the anger talking. I knew Scott, and this wasn't him. This is the Scott who lost his friends because of me, so I understood why he wanted me dead. And honestly, I wouldn't mind being dead again myself. "Why do you get the second chance?"
My eyes begin to bulge as I stare at him, trying to form words. "S-Scott-"
"Shut up!" he screams at me, looking as if he's about to finish me off. "I don't care about being a true alpha if that means I get to kill you."
My heart races before I look up suddenly, seeing Stiles standing in the doorway. He was confused and scared of the scene in front of him; since his best friend was trying to kill me. Melissa was standing there screaming at her son, but Scott just tuned it out. However, he didn't tune Stiles out.
"Scott!" Stiles screams, anger and sadness behind his voice. Scott's face conforms into confusion before he slowly lowers me, turning and seeing Stiles standing there.
Scott lowers me to the ground as I gasp for air, coughing and spitting. "Stiles?"
The next thing I know, I look up and see Scott running over to Stiles, pulling him into a huge hug. I could see the relief radiating off of Scott, but Stiles looked a little on edge. He was glad to see his best friend again, but I knew that Stiles thought that Scott had gone a little over the edge. I could see it written on his face.
I slowly stand up straight as Scott pulls away from Stiles, a huge smile on his face. He shakes his head as he stares at him for a moment, confused as to why and how he was back. Scott looks back at me as I sigh, running my fingers through my hair.
"We need to talk."
---------
Scott had ended up calling Kira and Lydia over, since I didn't exactly have a phone anymore since void had smashed mine to pieces. Scott mentioned about calling someone named Malia, but I wasn't sure who she was. I've heard her named mentioned before, but I never met her that I know of. So, Scott didn't end up calling her.
We all had a great reunion as we sat in Scott's living room, hugging and saying how much they had missed us. Kira even shed a few tears when she saw me, telling me how much she had missed me and that Scott hadn't been the same ever since we died. It didn't take me any convincing to believe what she said.
We considered calling the Sheriff since we knew he'd want to see Stiles, but Stiles said we wanted to wait. He wanted to talk to us first about everything that had happened before he saw his dad again, which was understandable to me. But maybe that's just the girl who's dad left her talking.
Melissa had even asked me if I wanted to see Vanessa, Zach, and Stephen, but I had told her not yet. I mean, I desperately wanted to see them, but how am I supposed to explain how I was alive? That the body they had saw at the funeral wasn't me? I'm going to have to come up with a pretty convincing story.
Anyways, after we all had rejoiced and after Scott had apologized many times to me, we were now sitting in the living room, staring at one another. Like Stiles had said, he wanted to talk to everyone about what had happened.
He's silent for a moment before he nods slightly, staring at the floor. "I just wanted to say how deeply sorry I am for everything that happened; that I had hurt you all the way I did."
"I am too," I say, almost specifically saying it to Scott. "I should have listened to you Scott, and maybe things would have turned out differently. Maybe the nogitsune wouldn't have taken control of me and maybe the people who we killed would be alive right now."
Scott stares at me with glossy eyes for a moment before he looks down, thinking back to Allison. "It wasn't your guy's fault," Lydia says, smiling faintly. I could tell she was thinking about Allison as well.
Stiles and I both nod slightly before Kira speaks up, knowing that we needed to change the topic soon or else everyone would end up in tears. "How are you guys back?"
I take a breath. "Well, my mother was the one who brought me back. I'm not sure how because she didn't give me any answers, and I'm not sure about Stiles. He seemed to just come back on his own."
"How is that even possible?" Lydia says frailly. "Something has to explain it."
Stiles shakes his head. "All I know is that I woke up in the morgue scared to death until Melissa had found me. Everything that had happened almost felt like a dream, but I can still remember how I had felt when I had done everything...when I had hurt you all."
I take Stiles' hand again as he takes mine as well. "The point is, my mother doesn't seem to want to explain herself which means we can't trust her; at least not yet. There's something different about her and I can't put my finger on it."
"I can't believe she's alive," Kira says, shaking her head. "It's been seven years. Either she somehow brought herself back, like she did to you Sarah, or maybe...maybe she never died in the first place."
I widen my eyes. "Are you saying that she has lived all of this time off somewhere while Stephen and I have been stuck with two people we barely even knew? I mean, Vanesa and Zach are great, but how could she just abandon us like that?"
"Maybe she had a reason," Lydia suggests. "People who convince the world they're dead usually have a reason."
"But what kind of reason?" I ask, but a part of me didn't even want to know why she wanted to make the world think she was dead; that she was truly gone. Whatever the reason, it didn't matter. She left Stephen and I alone.
"I guess we'll just have to wait and find out," Scott says dryly as I stare back at the floor. It's quiet for a moment as Stiles and I hold hands, his thumb rubbing gently on the back of my hand. After a minute, Scott looks up at us again. "Well, I was going to wait to tell you guys this, but Derek is missing."
Stiles sits up farther. "Missing? What do you mean?"
Scott pulls out his phone. "I tried calling him after everything happened, but he never answered me. So, I went to the loft to see what he was doing and found these instead."
Scott holds out his phone as he shows Stiles and I what seemed to be a bullet; one that had a skull carved into the side of it. Stiles and I stare at it for a moment before Scott pulls his phone back, glancing down at it again.
"Deaton says that it belongs to a family of hunters from Mexico," Scott says before shoving his phone back into his pocket. "I'm willing to bet that they are the ones who took him."
I nod slowly. "So I guess that means we're going to have to go get him."
Stiles stands as he turns and looks at me, a small smile on his face. "Time for a road trip."
