Chapter 25 | Too Soon
Sarah's POV
The clock ticks in my ears as I stare at Stiles' wall, lost in my own thoughts. It's only been a day since that whole quarantine junk at the school, and I was more than glad to be sleeping somewhere other than that cold concrete flooring.
We still haven't heard a thing from Malia, and I didn't blame her. She just found out that basically her whole life is a lie, so I understood that she needed her space. It only made me wonder if this would be how Stephen would act when I told him about our recent discovery of him not being related to me.
All of this with Malia had reminded me that I have yet to tell my brother, but I think I had just pushed the thought away because I couldn't stand to tell him. I didn't want to be the one to do it, but the only other option is my mother, and she's not much of an option. I had to do this, not that I was going to enjoy it either.
I haven't really seen much of Stephen lately as bad as it is. I mean, I've been a little busy with this whole hit list and I haven't really been staying the night over there as often as I should. I've stayed with Stiles almost every night this past month, only to make sure to keep him safe. I didn't want some person like Kate Argent showing up and kidnapping him in the middle of the night.
Then there was Kate Argent on my mind. We haven't heard a peep out of her in a long while, and I was starting to wonder what she was up to. Nothing good, I knew that much, but it only made me wonder and keep one eye open at night. I sure as hell don't miss her and her little Berzerker minions, but like I said before, this silence of hers is starting to worry me.
My eyes focus back just as soon as Stiles starts to shuffle around in the bed, pulling the covers ever so slightly away from me. I wouldn't have thought much of it until I hear him sigh, sounding as if he couldn't sleep.
I roll over on my other side, only to be met with his amber eyes. "Can't sleep?"
He groans slightly. "I can't stop thinking."
"About what?" I say, but I knew after I said that, that I shouldn't have asked.
He scoffs slightly. "What's there not to think about? The benefactor, assassins, Kate, Malia, us..."
"I can't stop thinking either," I say, my voice fading before I remembered something. "You know what, you remember that article that my mother had found?"
Stiles nods his head. "Yeah, what about it?"
"Well I was thinking that whoever wrote that article must know something," I say as I sit up slightly. "What if we go and talk to them?"
Stiles' eyebrows raise. "That's actually not a bad idea."
"When have I ever had a bad idea?" I say as a smirk form on my face.
Stiles rolls his eyes slightly before he tugs me back down onto the bed, pulling me closer to his chest. "Stop bragging and get some sleep."
"You're the one who needs the sleep," I say as I shake my head, pulling the light blue covers up more on me. I move around a little before I find a comfortable spot, stopping and closing my eyes to get some sleep.
Not even five seconds go by before Stiles is moving around in the bed, flinging his hand around. I open my eyes as I furrow my eyebrows. "What's wrong now?"
"My hand fell asleep," he says before I turn back over on my other side, now facing him again.
I wrap my hand around his side as I pull him closer to me, spooning him. "How about this?"
"This is better," he says, hearing the satisfaction in his voice. "This is good."
A small smile forms on my face before I close my eyes again, ready to go to sleep this time. I was about to go to sleep too, but that was before Stiles jerks awake again.
"Do you think woodpeckers get headaches-"
"Go to bed, Stiles!"
----------
"Do you think 3 is enough?" Kira says as we all gather around a table at Scott's house, staring at the Mac computers placed in front of us.
Stiles glances over at Kira. "That depends on how many cameras they have, but I think so."
"Are we really doing this?" Liam asks, sounding innocent as can be.
Scott nods his head. "We're doing this. Tonight."
I cross my arms as I look up at Scott. "Isn't it kinda dangerous?"
"Yep, it's entirely dangerous and borderline idiotic," Stiles says while looking as his friend, shaking his head. I knew that Stiles was not all for this plan, and neither was I.
Liam looks up. "Have you guys done something like this before?"
"Something dangerous or something idiotic?"
I scoff as a smile stretches across my face. "I think that's a yes to both."
Scott's eyes drift back to Liam, looking like a concerned parent. "You don't have to be apart of it if you don't want to."
"I'm not scared," Liam says sternly.
Stiles smiles as he places a hand on Liam's shoulder. "Then I guess you're borderline idiotic."
Liam laughs as Stiles turns back to Scott. "If we do this, we don't know what's coming for us. You know that, right?"
"How do we even know something is definitely coming?" Kira ask while shaking her head, her pig tails shaking with her.
Scott looks over at the kitsune. "Because Garret's tape said that visual conformation is required."
"The chemist said the same thing. He couldn't get paid until he had proof," Stiles says, causing me to flash back to the moment Stiles had told me what had happened when he had left. The thought of a gun pressed to his forehead scared me half to death, and if Scott's dad wouldn't have killed him, then I sure as hell would have.
"The idea is, you kill someone on the deadpool, but you can't send the proof," Scott says.
"You don't get paid," Kira finishes, finally understanding.
Liam shakes his head. "How does that get us any closer to the benefactor?"
"He still needs to know if the target is really dead."
"Especially if it's someone high on the list."
"So if he wants visual conformation..."
"He's going to have to come get it himself."
----------
"This is such a terrible plan," I groan as I stare at Scott's dead body, only hearing the most faintest of heart beats. It only would beat once every fifteen seconds, which is something no one could quite understand. It was a miracle that he was still alive.
"We need to get back upstairs," Stiles says as the three of us nod, following after him back to the room where we had put the Mac computers. The plan was for the four of us to watch the survalince footage and see if anyone looked suspicious. Well, we only had three computers, so I guess technically there only needed to be three of us up there, but let's just pretend that I'm the backup.
We all walk back into the room just as soon as Stiles' phone rings, causing him to pull it out and see that Argent was calling him. "Hello?"
"I'm here," I hear Argent say, sounding as if he was on the rooftop. "Try it now."
Stiles reaches out to the computers before pressing a button, causing them all to come to life. Footage of nurses and doctors walking down the halls flooded onto the screen, causing Kira and I to smile slightly. We knew that this plan was terrible, but the excitement of possibly figuring out who the benefactor was gave me an adrenaline rush.
"I guess now we just sit and wait," I say as I pull up a chair, sitting in it before crossing my arms. I pull out my phone and set a timer for 45 minutes, that being how long we had until Scott was officially a goner.
Stiles sighs as he taps on the edge of the table, Liam and Kira staring at the screens. "Anyone see anything yet?"
"What exactly are we even looking for?" Liam says as his puppy eyes look at Stiles.
Stiles' eye twitches. "Someone that looks suspicious. Someone that looks...evil."
"Or someone who looks like a murderer," I say as I laugh slightly at Stiles. "Just watch the doors to the morgue, Liam. That's all you really need to look for."
He nods his head as he looks back at the screen, but he's not looking long before one of the cameras stops. "Um, what about that?"
I stand as we all crowd around the laptop, staring at the camera that had gone out. "Which one is that?"
"That's the roof," Stiles says as Kira grabs her sword, ready to go check it out.
"I'll be back," Kira says as she starts to walk out of the room, Liam bounding off after her. I start to follow after her as well before Stiles grabs my arm, holding me back.
I look back at him. "What are you doing?"
"You're staying here," he says as if he was in control of my actions.
I furrow my eyebrows. "And why is that?"
"Because first off, I don't really want to be alone in a hospital, since the last time that happened, nothing good came out of that," he says, looking as if he remembered something terrible. "And secondly, I don't want you getting hurt. I think Kira and Liam can handle whatever it is."
I sigh, seeing in his eyes that he desperately didn't want me going with them. I wanted to help in any way that I could, but Stiles was right. I needed to stay here and help him watch the cameras, plus I could tell that something was really bothering him. I had to stay.
Just as soon as I start to look back at the cameras, the power in the hospital goes out. Stiles and I look above our heads, wondering what in the world was going on this time. Last time I was here and the power went out was when...was when I was with void Stiles. And people died that day. A lot of people.
"Come on," I say as I grab Stiles' hand, practically dragging him out of the room. "We need to figure out what's going on."
Stiles doesn't hesitate. "We need to keep eyes on Scott."
"What happened to Argent?" I ask as Stiles pulls his phone out, calling him as we walked down the hall, heading back to the morgue. The lights flickered above both of us, and it send an eerie chill down my spine.
"He's not answering," Stiles says as I push the door open to the morgue, smelling the air around me to make sure no one else has been in here. I didn't smell anything new, but I could smell that Scott was still in here as well. Looks like we beat the benefactor here after all.
"Where could he be?" I say, but I spoke too soon. Both of our heads whip to the door when a figure goes flying through them, landing on the floor with a thud. It was Argent.
"Run!" he yells to the both of us, but I'm glued still. No way will I leave Scott. "Get out of here!"
My eyes trail back up the door to see the one person that I had been wondering about not too long ago...Kate.
"Well, well," she snarls as her eyes narrow, staring at the two of us. I take a step forwards in front of Stiles as my eyes glow orange, willing to do anything to stop her.
"You're not getting his body, Kate," I snap through my teeth, seeing Argent crawl towards us out of the corner of my eye.
Kate smirks before looking at where Scott was, then back to Stiles and I. "Well now that I know you two are here, I guess my plans have changed."
"What are you talking about?" Stiles says, furrowing his eyebrows.
Kate takes a step forwards, her eyes glowing green. "I came here for Scott, but you and Stiles are worth more than him. I guess I'll just have to kill you both, won't I?"
-----------
Damn it Kate, you always gotta ruin everything...
And happy early Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates it. Eat lots of turkey and mashed potatoes! I know I sure will!
