Chapter 27 | Chain Reaction
Stiles' POV
I yawn as I stare at the television screen, watching Insurgent. The bright screen illuminated the dark vast of space around me, and it wasn't until I looked around that I saw that Kira and Scott were unusually close to one another. They were sitting on one of the other couches, holding hands it appeared like. I was happy for Scott, since he needed something good in his life from what happened to Allison, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.
In fact, the more I thought about it, I realized how badly I wanted a girlfriend. Of course I've always wanted one, but it seemed like every chance I had with someone, they'd either go running the other way or get sacrificed by a darach. I guess a relationship was never destined to be my thing.
My eyes flick to the kitchen when I hear a high pitched beeping, sounding like a microwave. As soon as I heard this, I noticed Sarah stand, who was sitting beside me this whole time. "Must be the microwave. I'll go shut it off."
She scurry's off before disappearing in the kitchen, causing me to glance back over at Scott. He raises his eyebrows at me as I furrow my own, confused as to what he was trying to tell me. It wasn't until he nodded his head towards the kitchen that I realized he wanted me to follow after Sarah; for a reason unknown to me.
But then it hit me. Scott is more than likely going to start dating Kira, and I didn't want to be left in the dust. I wanted a relationship, and Sarah was perfect. We had the same interests, and not to mention I could tell that she felt something for me too, but it wouldn't hurt to try.
I swallow the lump in my throat as I gather up the courage to follow after her into the kitchen, finally standing and walking out of the living room. Scott gives me a bright smile as I roll my eyes at him. When I turn to walk into the kitchen, Sarah is standing there with her hands on the counter top, almost looking as if she didn't feel good. I furrow my eyebrows as I start to walk towards her, but only for her to turn around just then and bump into me.
A scream starts to leave her lips before I cover her mouth up with my hand, not really knowing what to do. It was more of a instinctive movement, but I didn't want Scott or Kira to hear her either. I slowly remove my hand as her eyes are wide, staring up at me as if I had scared her half to death.
"What the hell are you doing? You about gave me a heart attack!" she yelps, but she wasn't angry at me. I could tell.
A small smile forms on my face, finding her angry face a little funny. "I just came to talk to you."
"Talk to me about what?" she says, finally calming down.
You see, I've never really gotten this far before with a girl, so I kind of had a freak panic attack right there and then. I fumbled on my words for a moment before coming up with an excuse. "About Scott."
Sarah sighs, knowing that I knew that she knew about Scott and the others. "Stiles, I'm fine. I don't particularly feel like talking about it at the moment."
I look to the floor, feeling bad that I brought it up. "I'm sorry, I just wanted to make sure. Scott told me about the car wreck, the hospital, what happened in the school hallway-"
She closes her eyes, probably wishing that she wouldn't have found out. "Stiles really, I'm fine."
A small smile forms on my face, noting her strength. "Good."
She smiles back at me before she starts to walk back to the living room. I don't know why I did what happened next, but I reached out and grabbed her arm, pulling her back so that she was facing me again. It was like something was taking over me as I leaned closer to her, my lips touching her own. She's tense underneath me, and that was when I realized what the hell I was doing. What was wrong with me?
I pull away then, my eyes wide. I had expected to see her confused and angry at me, but that's not what I saw at all. I took a step back when I saw that her lips were red with blood, causing me to reach up to my own and see that they were as well, but it was only from her's.
"Sarah?" I manage to choke out, utterly confused as to what was going on. Something wasn't right.
She stares into my eyes for a moment before she looks down, causing my eyes to drift towards her abdomen. It was then when I saw blood start to seep through her shirt; almost as if something had impaled her. She gasps before she falls straight to the ground, but I was there to catch her before she fell.
I don't know what to do as she dies in my arms, her eyes wide as can be as she looked upon my face. My bottom lip quivers as I stare at her abdomen, not understanding how this was even possible. Nothing had hit her; she shouldn't be dying.
"Stiles," Sarah gasps out, causing my eyes to flick back to her.
I shake my head. "What's happening-"
"This is because of you," she says, anger behind her tone. "You killed me, Stiles."
I furrow my eyebrows. "What are you talking about-"
"You killed me," she says, gritting her teeth. "You killed me!"
I gasp awake just then, feeling as if all of the blood had just rushed back to my head. My heart races in my chest as my eyes dance around my surroundings, seeing that I was in the Vet Clinic. It wasn't until I looked over and saw Sarah laying there on the table when I remembered what happened.
Just as soon as I was about to ask questions, Sarah gasps awake, sitting up the same way I had. She looks around as well before her eyes land on me, a huge breath escaping her lungs. Kira, Scott, and Lydia are at our sides then, trying to ask us if we were okay and what happened exactly. Deaton stands from a distance as he stares at us in astonishment.
"I thought we lost both of you!" Lydia exclaims as she looks back and forth between Sarah and I.
I shake my head as I try to get onto my feet, but Scott stops me. "How exactly are we here right now? Shouldn't I be dead? Shouldn't we be dead?"
Deaton turns to me then, licking his lips. "Well, it seems to me that your's and Sarah's connection has grown...stronger."
Sarah looks over at me, trying to get out at least a few words. "What...What were you thinking Stiles!"
I shake my head, trying to remember exactly what happened last. "She was going to kill you, Sarah-"
"That's why you let me deal with her," she says, out of breath. She didn't sound angry at me; just concerned. "Don't ever do something like that again."
"Can someone explain to us what exactly even happened?" Kira says, looking around at everyone.
Sarah looks down at her best friend. "We...we were trying to protect Scott when Kate came in, knocking out Chris and almost strangling me. We managed to get away before we ran to the roof, looking for you, Kira, since the time was about up. A berserker was up there and soon Kate was too, which led to me being thrown over the edge, but I managed to grab onto the side of the building before falling off. That's when Stiles got Kate away before pulling me back up, but that was when Kate ran at me. Stiles jumped out in front of her to block her from me, and the last thing I remember was the two of them hitting the pavement below."
"But that's like a 25 foot drop," Kira says, confused as to how the two of us were still breathing.
Deaton looks up again. "Sarah, you told me earlier that you and Stiles could only feel each other's pain, correct?"
Sarah nods her head at him. "Yeah, but we've been growing more connected with every passing day."
"Well that's certainly been happening," Deaton says, sounding like he was in deep thought. "Stiles, have you been noticing anything off about yourself."
I furrow my eyebrows. "Off like how?"
"Off as in showing signs of supernatural abilities."
I lick my lips then. "Um, yeah. I can hear better, smell better, heal faster-"
"Bingo," Deaton says, stopping me there. "Not only are you, Stiles, starting to possess the same powers as Sarah, but I think you're actually amplifying them as well."
I furrow my eyebrows, Sarah doing the same thing. "Amplify them? What do you mean?"
"I mean that I think if Sarah would have been the one to fall off that building, then this would be a different story," Deaton says, pointing to Sarah.
Lydia looks up slowly. "So you're saying that Stiles is becoming stronger than Sarah? But how is that possible?"
Sarah looks over at me, giving me an unsettling look. "Doesn't this sound familiar, Stiles?"
As soon as she says this, I knew instantly what she was talking about. She was talking about that article on the internet; the story about what was destined to happen. One of the stages was the victim to grow stronger than the host, which happened to me. It made perfect sense.
"What is she talking about, Stiles?" Scott says, sounding seriously concerned.
I look up at him, knowing that we needed to tell them about it sometime. Especially if it's starting to come true. "Sarah's mother had found something on the internet relating to the two of us..."
Deaton looks highly interested. "Can you show us?"
"There's nothing really to show," Sarah says coldly, looking upset. "The moral of the story is that this is what's supposed to happen. Since I cheated death, Stiles is here to finish me off. That's why we're connected. He takes my abilities to use against me, which makes perfect sense."
Everyone looks scared and alarmed, since this was new news to them all. "But if you two are connected and he's supposed to kill you, why wait all of this time? Why not just kill himself so that you'd go with him?"
"Takes the fun out of it I suppose," Sarah says, scoffing slightly. "Either way, you're going to lose both of us again because of me."
I get onto my feet then, wanting her to stop there. "Sarah, this isn't because of you."
"Of course it is," she says, her voice rising. "If I wouldn't have let the nogitsune control me, none of this would be happening. You wouldn't have died, I wouldn't have died, Aiden wouldn't have died, and Allison wouldn't have died. Everything in our lives is just a chain reaction caused by me."
Sarah turns to walk out of the Clinic. "Sarah-"
"I just...I need some time." My heart sinks into my chest as she disappears through the door, leaving everyone else staring at me as if they were waiting for me to go chase off after her. I would have, too, but she wanted her space. I know how that feels, so I just left her be.
The room is silent for awhile before Deaton finally speaks. "I need you to give me all of the information you know about that story, Stiles."
"Why's it matter," I say, shaking my head. "There's no way to undo it, so what's the point? If you really want to help, keep Sarah away from me."
They all stare at me as I storm out of the Clinic, everything just rushing to me too fast. I kept thinking about how much this sucked, that we were losing, and we couldn't do anything about it. I meant those words that I had said; if we're going to stay alive, we'll have to stay apart. That's the only way.
Suddenly, the nightmare I had before I woke up made a lot more sense.
