[23] The Snitch
Jason stepped through the door at Dora's Coffee Haunt and the bell chimed upon it announcing his arrival. Not many people were sitting inside since it was almost closing time as he made his way to the counter where Dora was perched up on her stool as usual.
"A Frappucino please, if you're still taking orders," he spoke up.
She nodded jotting it down in her notepad, "of course, coming right up."
"Sure."
She had gone to the kitchen to give the order to Alex but when she returned she was surprised to see him still standing by the counter. "It will take a few minutes, so you can take a seat."
He shook his head, "it's fine, really. You must be Dora, right?"
"Isadora," she corrected him, "and you are?"
"Jason Todd."
She seemed to recognize his name as a small smile flickered on her face, "oh... Tim's brother, I'm guessing?"
"Yes, unfortunately." He didn't let the conversation drop there as he resumed, "Tim has mentioned you a lot and since Dick and Steph were also absolutely smitten by you, I wanted to see who's the competition I've got now."
She laughed, "it's not like that, there's no competition."
"So you're not going to steal my siblings away?"
"Of course not," she shook her head smiling, "who gave you such a ridiculous notion?"
"No one in particular. I can call you Dora though, right? Because to me, Isadora sounds a handful."
"Sure."
The Frappucino arrived but Jason was still standing by the counter though he had taken his cup.
"No I don't want to take a seat," he mentioned himself noticing her expression, "I came here for a reason. I actually have to ask you a very important question."
She was a bit surprised at that, "what question?"
Jason leaned forward, dropping his voice so that he would not be over heard by anyone else, "do you like Tim?"
A mixture of shock and surprise tainted her features, "excuse me?"
"I didn't ask you to give me a mathematical solution Dora, you can simply answer in a yes or a no; do you like Tim or not?"
The last of the customers had left as well and it was time to close the shop, "Jason, I've got to close the shop."
"Not leaving until I get the answer."
"This is the first time we've met and you're asking personal stuff already. Officer Grayson isn't like that and even Steph is not that intrusive."
Jay rolled his eyes, "sorry to break it on you but that's who I am. Coarse and impolite. Just answer the question and I promise I will leave."
She sighed, "well... Tim's a very good friend and of course he's very likeable. Anything else you'd like to know?"
But she realized that she shouldn't have said that as he leaned forward again, "likeable as just friends or...?"
He had left the sentence deliberately incomplete noticing the faint blush creeping up to her face.
"I think I can count that as a likeable as more than just friends," he remarked playfully and the blush deepened on her face.
"Kindly step out, Mister Todd, or else I will call Alexander."
"Ooooh fun times... Let me call him instead," his eyes sparked in mischief and then he raised his voice so that all could hear in the kitchen as well, "hey Alexander, there's a surprise waiting for you outside!"
"What the hell?"
"All the Waynes are on very good terms with your brother," he remarked, "did you honestly think I would get scared of him?"
"A very good surprise considering it's you," Alex glanced out and seeing Jason a smile spread on his face, "what brings you here, Jay?"
"Shall I tell?" Jay looked at her.
"No."
Turning to Alexander he spoke, "I heard the Dora after whom you named this place is finally here so dropped by to say hi."
"Right, took you a whole month to drop by for a visit," Alex nodded glancing at the clock as he noted the time, "hey, I have a few things to pack up in the kitchen so don't leave before that. It will just take a while then I'll join you both."
He went back to the kitchen however Dora was looking at Jay with a small frown, "I don't like you at all."
"Ouch, you hurt my feelings, and look who's being all polite now," he chuckled but resumed shortly afterwards, "but that doesn't matter since the one you do like is going to ask you out on a date tomorrow."
Jay leaned back for he had played his card and wanted to see the effect.
She was quite shocked at his statement. "He what?"
"I came here to warn you and also tell you that if you need any help in ditching the date, I'll be available to cook up any sort of trouble necessary for it. But that would be unnecessary now since you actually like him... Pity..."
"Jason, slow down," recovering from the shock, Dora spoke up, "and tell me in simple words what the hell are you all up to?"
He held his hands up, "oh no I'm not up to anything. But my family is on board a mission that they call Project Cupid. I had just thought it would be better to prepare you for it beforehand and I swear if you tell any of them that I snitched, I'll ruin your date either way."
She glanced at the clock then back at him with a confused look in her brown eyes, "you beat around the bush a lot. Get to the point before Al comes out."
Jason shrugged nonchalantly, "in simple words, Timmy has a crush on you but he was afraid of confessing. So Steph and the others planned to make things easier for him while I obviously took the other route to screw a few parts of their plan. You will find out the rest tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?"
"Yup."
"But why are you even here?" She asked, looking at him dubiously, "I doubt that just asking me pointless questions was the only reason to your visit."
"Because I initially thought it was a little unfair if we only took Steph's words that you liked our nuisance of a brother as well. I wanted to be very certain because knowing Timmy not many people like him, so I had my doubts that could only be cleared by asking you personally but..."
"But what?"
His steel blue eyes sparked in amusement, "but now even I can see Steph wasn't wrong this time. So all this extra effort on my part wasn't really needed."
She was pondering on his words and then spoke up, "or perhaps you came here expecting that I would freak out and say no and then you'll go back home and break the news on Tim, right?"
He looked at her with a slight trace of awe on his face, "oooh, not bad. Hadn't known Cupid has reserved a smart person for our dunce brother."
"He's not a dunce."
"Taking his side already, Dora?"
But she was spared answering the question as Alex stepped out, his trench coat dangling on his arm because it was almost time for him to leave for the Iceberg Lounge.
"Are you going somewhere?" Jason asked, "I can drop you off."
"It's not that far, I'll manage," Alex smiled.
Jay placed an arm round his shoulders casually, "we hardly ever see you around, Al. I won't take no for an answer this time. Come."
Alex knew he wasn't going to let him off easily so he turned to Dora, "I've done the kitchen. Lock the doors and the grill."
"Of course."
Jay however turned back with a mischievous smile playing upon his lips, "bye Dora and best of luck."
She watched as the two stepped out then went over to lock the door, flipping the sign hanging from it to Closed. Switching off the lights and checking the kitchen one last time, she went up the spiral staircase that led to the upper portion of the building where her room and the balcony was located.
Though there were a lot of questions whirring in her mind due to Jason's unexpected visit and the only consolation was that she would hopefully get her answers the next day through Steph.
