dix-huit

A slow thrum of excitement made it's way though her. She could tell her wolves felt the same.

Standing up front. She was first to be alerted of the approaching newborns, despite having the weakest hearing and eyesight. The trembling of the earth alerted her to it better than anyone else.

"They're coming," her voice rang out, seconds before Alice's voice did from much further behind her.

Emmett tensed. His excitement being dulled by the potential threat to his mate.

"Don't die," he called to her.

"Don't jinx it," she fired back playfully.

Emmett growled lightly. "I'm serious."

"I know."

Aleida pulled on her connection with Emmett firmly, ensuring that it was intact before calling up the earth.

The newborns came running straight towards her, the vampires behind her prepared to strike as the earth split open. A chasm appeared, Aleida didn't have the time to see how far down she had willed it to go.

The first few newborns fell right through before realizing the mistake. They turned to Aleida threateningly as the Cullen's came forward, Emmett in the lead.

They fell into a rhythm. Emmett moved around Aleida, catching those that got too near, preventing her from getting hurt. Aleida danced around, her body dancing to the silent beat of the earth. She was aware of everyone in the field, aware of every foot fall and attack.

She felt when the pack joined, bringing the second wave of newborns. She felt herself become hyper-aware. She was surrounded by family, but she feared for her wolves. She new them best, she was closest to them; she hadn't even met all the Cullen's yet.

Lifting her hands, she clenched her fist tightly before slamming them down. She released a current of energy through the ground beneath her, the earth moved and wavered as if it as water, knocking only the newborns off balance. Aleida felt her knees go weak and a few bruises appear as she held the force back from hitting the pack or the Cullen's, pain coursing though her as she channeled it around them. Attacks that direct and powerful ere meant for someone much more skilled.

The newborns gravitated to her. The scent of her blood blood might have been hidden behind the smell of nature but it was still prominent in the field of people. Her Emmett was never far, he lingered near her, every instinct telling him not to stray because of the danger that she was in.

From the corner of her eye she saw Leah and Embry moving in closer to her, the to her boys moved around with ease. She could only imagine what the pack link sounded like at the moment.

Punching her had into the air, a wall of solid rock appeared in front of a feral newborn that was attacking one of her boys. It quickly redirected it's attention towards her. A snarl on it's lips as it saw her flushed cheeks. A key sign of blood flowing beneath her skin.

She was ready for the newborn running at her full force, she wasn't ready for Embry to jump in the way. Her heart slammed in her chest at the sight of the newborns arms around him.

Aleida felt the world around her fade out, all her energy solely focused on him. She didn't notice the approaching newborns from behind her, or the panic surging through the other wolves.

She stomped her foot, the ground cracking underneath the newborn slightly. Flicking her fingers, the earth rose between her target and the wolf abruptly, forcing the vampire back.

Aleida's eyes were hard as she focused on the newborn, frustration clear on his face. Lifting her finger, she guided the rock around him, closing it in tight.

"Go to hell," she sneered at it. Twisting her wrist harshly, she watched the head roll in satisfaction.

She looked around her, worry settling deep in her bones alerted her to something being wrong. Aleida stood frozen as she felt blood drip from her nose, dread spreading through her as she knew it was too late to reverse her actions.

She had lost her connection to Emmett at one point in the fight, her energy dwindling down in her attempt to save her brother.

She worked quickly, not having the opportunity to focus back on Emmett. Newborns came at her quickly, giving the others an opportunity to pick them off with the slight distraction. Her body moved fluidly, with her eyes closed she relied firmly on the earth. Blood dripped in a stead stream. Twisting and turning, she was just fast enough to escape the lunges and grabs. Heart hammering in exhaustion. They were fast, she could barely keep up.

Earth rose, split and shifted quickly. Every move calculated and precise until she fell.

Aleida panted, her front covered in blood she no longer had the will to move. She could still feel them approaching, but she could hardly lift a finger to stop them.

She knew one was there, right upon her before it was removed in a burst of speed.

The fight was over. She heard her name being called from around her. Embry was always first to reach her.

"Are you okay? Aleida?" his voice was frantic. "Say something."

"Remind me never to save your life again," she groaned, her eyes fluttering open.

Embry scoffed before attempting to wipe some blood away. "I was trying to save you."

"I never asked you to interfere. I had it." Aleida argued. "Plus you were doing a rather awful job if you think saving me was a excuse to get yourself killed."

"Yeah, well, I could say the same thing for you." Embry was stubborn. "And you didn't do that good a job because the bloodsucker cracked a few ribs."

Aleida glared at him before sitting up slowly. "I'll show you cracked ribs. I'll break every single one of them."

Embry moved away from her with a laugh. The Cullen's watched how the two interacted as siblings, watched as the wolves rolled their eyes in amusement. It was strange to them how she fit in with them so well.

All were distracted, non were prepared for Leah to take on a newborn alone, or for Jake to intervene.

Aleida was frozen as the boy let out a pained whimper. A sob made it's way up her thought.

Despite the pain, she heaved herself up and ran to the boy, collapsing at his side.

"You're okay, you're gonna be okay," she cooed, smoothing his hair back gently. She was vaguely aware of Carlisle attending to the boy and Bella calling his name.

"Bones on the let half of his body are shattered," Carlisle spoke professionally.

"They can't be here when the Volturi arrive." Aleida recognized it as Edward.

"Take him back to the rez," Aleida ordered. The pack was quick to move as they recognized it as a command from one of their elders. "Join us a fast as you can, Carlisle. I will tend to him for the time being."

She gestured for the wolves to move forward, warning them to be gentle as they lifted him.

"Leah," she called the girl back. She rose to her feet slowly. "I doubt I will make it back on my own."

The girl lifted her into her arms, careful not to jostled her too much. Leah knew how sore she was after over exerting herself.

"Bella!" Aleida called. "It is good to see you well. Carlisle, I give permission for you to bring one other person with you without it breaking the treaty."

The girl s left quickly, not wanting to get caught in a situation in which they would be in more danger. It was silent as they made their way quickly towards their home. Aleida was tired but she knew that she would not be able to rest for a while.

"It is not your fault, Leah. Your brother jumped in to save you. He believes he can save everyone and does not think of the repercussions or how her could hurt himself." Aleida comforted the girl softly. "You are like a sister to me. You are a sister to me and all that matters right now is that neither of you are dead."

"If he hadn't have jumped in-"

"I know. I saw," her voice was calm. "He will not be angry with you. Despite all of their mean words and distant attitudes, you are still family. Family always stands by you."

"I'll always stand by you," Leah told her honestly.

Aleida believed her, even if she felt like it wan't the whole truth.
