FOUR
THE WEIRDO ON MAPLE STREET: PART
TWO!
School was definitely on June's list of her least favorite things ever. The entire eight hour day could he summed up into one word; hell. The halls were too narrow, the kids too loud, and the teacher too demanding. She absolutely hated sitting at a desk all day everyday and the countless detention slips she had received in the past showed it.
She supposed there was a few silver linings. The main on was, of course, being able to see her friends for long periods of time. Some of the boys were also pretty fun to look at. But other then that, no other positives really came to mind.
There were some people who thrived in the stiff, tense environment. June Henderson just didn't happen to be one of those people.
The brunette tried not to roll her eyes when a high pitched voice called out to her— she really, really did. But she only knew one freckled face girl who would be calling her loudly over the seas of people in the hallway. One she wasn't all too fond of.
Carol grinned as June turned to face her, the girl's skirt swinging around her thighs from the movement. June was hesitant to join whatever conversation that was going on, but she knew Carol would drag her by her elbow if she didn't.
In a weirdly, mismatched circle stood the least likely group of people to be found together— aside from if Jonathan Byers was thrown into the mix. Carol stood leaning against the green and yellow painted strip wall, Tommy H. proudly by her side. Next to him was Steve along with Nancy Wheeler are her friend Barb.
It looked like a sad rendition of a low budget Hollywood chick flick. A tad too cliche for June's taste.
"Yes?" June questioned the red head, getting straight to the point. June tolerated Tommy and Carol at best, having been forced to get used to their presence.
She had been to parties with the duo. June couldn't lie, they were fun to be around when they wanted to be. It was too bad that their default setting was asshole.
"Steve's parents went out of town for the week," Carol smirked, clicking her tongue as she continued, "—we were planning on getting together later. You should join. You can even bring the other Golden Girls if you want."
June looked over the group with furrowed brows, focusing in on an uncomfortable looking Nancy and Barb. The two didn't exactly radiate party-goer energy.
Steve looked over expectedly, waiting for the short girl to answer. June Henderson wasn't exactly the type to turn down free booze.
"Like a party?" She questioned after a few seconds of silence. It was a school night— not exactly prime time for that sort of thing. Not that it had ever stopped her before.
Steve nodded, his arms crossed over his chest, "Just a small, intimate get together."
"C'mon June," Tommy piped up with a cheshire cat grin on his face, "—you never let Keg Queen Henderson out anymore. I thought you were the loves to have fun type?"
June rolled her eyes at the boy, him and Carol were still nothing but trouble. Though he was right— sometimes it was good to let loose. And she hadn't been to a party in at least a month.
"Yeah and then beer came out of my nostrils five minutes later and I retired early," she retorted, giving the boy a glare.
Drunk June was an entertainer and loved to appease the crowd. She already had far too much to drink when the idea was suggested. Amber had tried to talk the girl down, and boy did she wish she had listened.
Sure, the keg stand was killer, but less then five minutes later she was vomiting straight beer to the point where it came out of her nose.
June let out a breath, running a hand through her tamed curls. "I'll think about it," she shrugged, hoping that would be good enough for the time being.
Carol sent the girl a wink, knowing that if June was there, it would be a good time. The pair was dangerous together, especially when alcohol was involved— because it meant they actually got along.
Tommy grinned, shooting her a thumbs up— all while Barb and Nancy stood watching from the sidelines, not uttering a word.
Before June could walk away from the uncomfortable group a hand latched around her elbow softly, turning her around where she stood. "For what it's worth," Steve began, his voice soft as he spoke, "—I hope you come."
June sent the boy a small uncomfortable smile, her eyes darting to Nancy as she backed away.
The last thing June needed was to get in the middle of whatever the hell was going on between those two. Though when Steve Harrington looks at you with those eyes, it's damn near impossible not to melt into a puddle right there on the spot.
June didn't end up going to Steve Harrington's house that night. She decided that she'd rather die then be a fifth wheel along side Barb, though Dustin had informed her that her choice of words during that time wasn't exactly the best.
Jessie and Amber had confirmed that it wasn't exactly a good idea, and that it was just a matter of time before she got herself mixed in with something she shouldn't have.
June was very happy to have friends whose heads were screwed on a little bit tighter then hers.
Instead the girl stayed in for the night, parked comfortably in front of the living room television with their cat, Mews, sat in her lap.
She ended up with an empty house by nine o'clock, with Dustin spending the night at Mike's, and her mom working a late shift at the nursing home. The house was unnervingly quiet— every little noise making the hairs at the back of her neck stand up.
A feeling of discomfort settled in the pit of June's stomach, distracting her from the old western film that played quietly on the television.
Slowly she moved Mews off of her lap, swinging her legs over the arm of the couch so she could stand up. The lights in the kitchen flickered, the sound drowning out the southern drawl of the actors of the screen.
June wiped the slick sweat from her palms, her fingers shaking slightly as she laced them together in an attempt to still them.
Her breath hitched at the sound of a loud clang coming from the kitchen. Slowly she tiptoed around the doorframe, her sock clad feet not making any noise. She looked around the corner carefully, her stomach churning.
June let out a breath of relief fo find nothing there, blaming it on her own overactive imagination. The whole town had been on edge since Will Byers went missing, and June Henderson was not immune.
She nearly jumped out of her skin when the phone let out a shrill ring behind her, placing a hand over her chest to calm her heart that had just settled.
She picked it up and took a deep breath, silently praying that her voice wouldn't come out shaky. "Hello?" She questioned. Even to June's own ears it sounded like she was out of breath.
Her words were met with silence.
"Hello?" She questioned again, this time with more force.
There was the sound of heavy breathing on the other end— the type that reignited the pit in the bottom of her stomach. "Whoever this is needs to chill the hell out. This isn't funny."
June slammed the phone back into it's stand, rubbing at her temples.
This time the feeling in her stomach didn't go away.
