Chapter 4.4

She had just finished skimming the contents of one of Daniel's books when Alex arrived back to their room. He turned to notice her briefly before reaching into the dresser for some new clothes and heading towards the bathroom.

"I can't believe I am this dirty," he complained under his breath. He left the door open as he pulled his shirt over his head, causing the caked on dirt to come off like a cloud around him. He coughed and tried not to laugh as he threw the shirt onto the floor and reached to close the door, winking at Abigail as he worked.

She tried to ignore the feelings in her chest that arose from that brief moment, knowing that she was probably misinterpreting his intentions. She also didn't want to give Lizzie any more of a reason to hate her, though she had to admit that it would feel good to have her see the two of them together.

No. She shook her head to remove the thoughts that were building up in her mind and instead moved to the bed. She reached to the floor and picked up the grey sweat pants she had worn to bed the previous night, and changed quickly into them.

By the time Alex reappeared from the shower, having removed at least three layers of dirt from his hair and skin, she was comfortable in her bed perusing one of Daniel's many books. She had to admit she was a little overwhelmed at the size of his collection, and she found herself often wondering where he could have gained access to such information.

"What are you looking over now?" Alex asked as he climbed into bed, himself.

"Ummm..." Abigail marked her place with her fingers as she flipped to the front of the book, "it's a book about the history of Louxe."

"Don't you already know that?" Alex questioned.

"Well, I thought I did," she explained, "but once I started flipping through the pages I realized that a lot of this wasn't taught to us in school."

"What do you mean? What didn't you know?"

"Well for starters," she cleared her throat before continuing, "I've never heard anything about a 'Great War'."

"You mean you have no idea about the war that lead to the creation of Louxe?" Alex seemed absolutely dumbfounded.

"Well..." she continued to explain, "no. We were pretty much taught that each city developed independently, but relied on each other for goods. Though the only one I ever really heard much about was Arcadia."

"That's interesting," Alex mused, "And I am sure that Arcadia is a favorite because their governing rules are so similar. I doubt you would have heard much about any of the really distant and radical ones."

"Wouldn't this place count as a radical city?" she questioned, looking around the room for emphasis.

"Not really. I mean, we would technically be categorized as a radical movement, I suppose, but we aren't officially recognized as a city."

"So then how do people know to come here?"

"The same way you did. We come into the cities and try to save those that we can. The trip into Louxe was Daniel's first time going. I really wish we would have given him more training before then."

Abigail didn't want to push the subject of Daniel any farther, and instead turned down the corner of the page in her book before closing it and setting it on the dresser. Alex seemed to have the same desire and got up to turn off the light to their room. She could hear the rustling of covers as he shuffled around in his bed to get comfortable.

"Hey Alex," she whispered into the darkness.

"Ummm hmmm," he sleepily replied.

"I'm nervous about tomorrow. Do you think I can do this job?"

He didn't respond immediately, and she was certain that he had fallen asleep until he finally replied, "I think you will do great. Just take a lot of notes and pay attention to what Maggie says. Daniel found her fascinating and I must admit, I do, too."

"She does seem like a very interesting woman," Abigail mused in response.

Alex didn't respond anymore after that and she could hear his breaths come out more and more even. He was soon asleep, and as much as Abigail wanted to do the same, thoughts of what else Tobias Morales and his numerous deputies were keeping hidden kept her awake.
