Chapter 3: Hook, line and sinker

"Moin!"

Andy's deep, soothing voice and the traditional North German all-day all-season greeting made Miggs smile. Even though Andy had moved to the deep south of Germany - well, according to true Northerners anything south of Hamburg and the river Elbe was Southern Europe - he still valued some traditions of his old home soil.

"Hey, thanks for calling me back!" Miggs greeted him happily. "How's your family?"

"They're good. Ted's excited that school will start this summer."

"Kind of ironic, since we have our reunion this year."

"Yeah. Listen, I'm a bit busy right now, so if you could get to the point... You said it's important."

Miggs sighed. "Didn't want to bother you too much with it, but since you brought it up in your last message... I was thinking about what you said, regarding finishing the movie."

Silence answered him for a few heartbeats. "I would love to, really, but..."

"Listen first! I don't think we will get far with a sequel to the courtroom drama we shot in 11th grade. Besides, I don't feel that anyone but us would be interested in this. I was thinking that we might do something completely different."

"What do you have in mind?"

While holding his smartphone in one hand, Miggs clicked on his laptop with the other. "I just sent you something. It's just a quick draft of the plot, but I think you will get the jist of it."

"I just got it. Hold on!" More silence from the other end of the line, as Andy was clearly reading the short amount of text Miggs had just sent him. After a minute Miggs started to worry. It wasn't that long a document, but his friend hadn't uttered one single sound yet. Until the voice sounded from the speaker again.

"Miggs?"

"Yes?"

"Are you alright?"

Miggs took his phone and looked at it confused. Though he realized that Andy couldn't see his look. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, are you alright? Have you seen a doctor lately? Got your head examined, and all that?"

"Are you saying that you don't approve of my plan?"

"It is a bit... how do I put this... outrageous. If you don't mind me saying, I think it's completely bonkers."

That didn't surprise him. Nor should it. Even he had to admit, while he had been sitting on his laptop for the last two nights, typing it down, that the entire premise sounded insane. But it had a lot going for as well. "Wouldn't this be a great project to honor our class reunion? A touch of nostalgia, a callback to old times..."

"You mean the times when people watched our movies and went out asking 'What the fuck was that?' That sort of times?"

"I promise you, we will make this as straightforward as possible."

"Miggs, that thing is anything BUT straightforward."

"Only at first glimpse. Also, the reason why people couldn't get behind our movies was because you tried to be the next David Lynch. Hell, even I don't understand that French film we made, and I played the lead character in it!"

"I don't think emulating Christopher Nolan, like you are apparently trying to do, will make things any better."

Miggs squinched his face. Maybe he had a point. But he tried his best not to show any of his doubts in his voice. "Well, you know what Confusius said, don't you?"

"Huh?"

"Exactly! So, you in?"

"Of course I'm in. Question is, how do we get all of this organized?"

A sigh of relief came from Miggs' throat. "We need to get the gang back together. I will contact Tim and Julius, and you could try to get in touch with Sören, since he still avoids every kind of social media." He hesitated for a moment. "And then we might have to look for anyone else ready and willing to join."

He had tried his best to avoid mentioning the name, and thankfully Andy knew exactly what was going on in his mind. "I'm not sure whether Katrin would be up to this sort of thing."

"Who said anything about Katrin?" Miggs tried to use his innocent voice.

"Your mind screamed that name at me. I've known you for a long time now."

"Actually I was thinking about Inge."

A brief pause. "Yeah, that might work."

"Anyway," Miggs tried to cut this conversation short, "I will try to get the script done. I will keep you posted on how far I've gotten with it."

"Alright, do that! I need to fix dinner now. We'll keep in touch. Bye!"

With a click the line was disconnected. Miggs breathed out slowly. That went better than he expected. He agreed with Andy on one thing: That whole idea was bonkers. The more he thought about it, the more headaches he got. But that was probably the hook that he needed to pull Andy in. When it came to movies, his friend couldn't resist an outrageous, insane idea - especially when he got a part in it. He loved that sort of thing. More than Miggs did - his mainstream action film taste had often clashed with the avantgarde cinematic experiences Andy preferred.

If they ever got to finish this movie together, the result would be most interesting.
