vingt-trois

Curling her hair around her finger, tugging the tricky tangles loose carelessly, Erica tried to make herself presentable. It was metaphysical, the way it felt to be so well-kept and beautiful in front a person that feared her above most things.

She liked the way their eyes flashed in panic, pulse quickening, and hands shaking. Erica loved to see that look above all else, especially when she instilled it into the hearts of others.

Perhaps she was what people would like to call a sadist, perhaps even worse; though she hardly cared in the slightest. She revelled in the pain of others, she would have bathed in their blood if it would not have taken so much work to accomplish. Drinking their life's sustenance was well enough.

Her steps were confident as she passed through the forest that housed the wolves. She was their greatest enemy, they had seen how easily she had entered their land before yet they had not upped their security.

It was easy to follow the scent of dog, to follow the trampled undergrowth. She had thought, planned, for them to be prepared, to be waiting but it seems they set a trail for her to follow as the human girl's smell carried straight to her on the wind.

Bella was on the reservation, calling her to visit and Erica planned to. She might not have organized a playdate but she was sure that something could be worked out.

Something would definitely come from this visit and there was a seventy-six percent change it would be in her favour.

Coming to a stop, she took in a breath, letting it guide her closer to where she wanted to go. Part of her wondered what they would do if they spotted her, though she was prepared for just about anything.

Part of her wished they would try to kill her, so that she could dig cold fingers into warm furry flesh. She could imagine the layers of muscle she would need to rip through if she wanted to get a hand around a vital organ.

Bones were easy to snap, death bowing to her with a well aimed punch or kick. These things were far too easy for her to achieved and she very much wanted to give these wolves a drawn-out death just for the sake of pain.

Erica continued to tug through her hair, yanking out stands along with the twigs and leaves that were stuck. Ice swirled around her fingers, smoothing onto the crown of her head in intricate designs.

She fashioned herself a Queen of her element, a true force of nature and she wanted to look the part.

She wanted people to see her as such, to fear something as simple as snow and ice. She wanted to fill the world with her hatred, burn it into memory. The bible had said never to take revenge, to wait for the lord but Erica no longer believed in him to right the wrongs and cure the evils.

He had allowed her to be turned into a demon that he so scorned, her life was full of hatred and she wanted his children to feel it. She wanted him to see the monster that turned into a Queen of his world.

With James gone, she was left to rule alone, to pass along judgment and then continue on with their foolish games. The world was full of people willing to run from her, and Erica enjoyed the hunt of prey.

Her prey was close, though it was not the blood she desired from the girl. The human was a challenge, one that would present with an ultimatum- death or existence at the side of a Queen.

As she drew closer to the houses on the reservation, Erica scaled to the top of the trees for cover. The last time she had been this close to the population it did not end well for the pack, though the last time she had seen a wolf it had been a highly pleasurable experience.

Paul was one of the most prominent scents that surrounded her, his trail leading the furthest away from their territory- most likely trying to sniff her out. It was funny how he failed to keep his distance, trusting in the imprint and whatever bond they had to keep her in line and from hurting others in his presence.

He would get a rather horrifying surprise to learn that she was not against killing anyone that got in her way- at times, even for less.

Jumping from tree to tree, Erica listened intently to the voices of the humans until she caught the words of the pack carried on the wind. She got closer, cautiously, the cold on her powers freezing the air- sizzling the natural smell that followed her and replacing it with a cool crispness of winters touch.

Excitement fizzled in her veins, running through the empty vessels as if the feeling owned her. She licked her lips in anticipation, the unnatural smoothness of her lips bringing a feral joy to her- it was proof of her superiority.

Any challenge she faced, Erica refused to lose- she had yet to lose, and unlike her brother, she planned to win when it came to Bella. The human with peculiar friends would be hers one way or another.

She stilled when she smelled it, her hair fluttering back with the breeze, and nostrils flaring at the pure sweetness that reached her.

They were wandering casually along, tall grass brushing against upper thighs and fingers trailing over the flowers gently. From her distance she could see the way he leaned into her, eyes flickering to arm pink lips.

This Jacob character seemed to be very desperate for her little human's attention- funny how he would never get it in the way he wished. Bella could never love him the way he wants, needs. By the way Bella held her hand to her chest protectively, Erica figured she tried to get her message across- she was disappointed to have missed the little human slug the pup.

Darting to them through the canopies, Erica landed gracefully in the tree line. Out in the open, she sprinted as fast as she could to get to them before someone caught sight of the way her skin glistened like fresh snow on a bright morning.

He was aware of her when he saw her movement from the corner of his eye and placed Bella behind him protectively whilst frost crept over the flowers- the temperature dropping enough to see their breath puff out before them.

Her mouth twisted in a feral smile, teeth glinting in the plain light. Her hands were tucked loosely in her back pockets, ice sticking ever place her bare feet landed.

Bella sucked in a harsh breath, pushing herself away from Jacob defiantly. She kept her hand close to her chest, eyeing her chances of escape openly.

"You should be more guided in your actions, Bella," Erica advised cheerfully. "It makes it easy for predators to follow your plan of action."

"What are you doing here?" she hissed, inching a step away from the shaking boy.

The vampire sucked her teeth and eyed them both distastefully. "It has been a while since I have last payed you a visit, don't you think? How has it been with the Cullen's back? They seem a little possessive, in my opinion."

Jacob's shoulders hunched, his breathing coming out sharp and in heavy puffs- his body shook, and eyes burning. He was ready to shift at any moment; Erica returned his challenge with a snarl.

Bella darted away from the pair with a burst of adrenaline, both species snapping their attention to her and Erica had the frantic girl held tightly in her arms a moment later.

"You know better than to run from me, Bella," she whispered, her nose stuck in the other girl's neck as she breathed deeply. "Its gets me excited."

The angry gnashed of teeth drew her focus back to the newly shifter wolf and Erica wondered how long it would take until reinforcements arrived. By her calculations she had only a few minutes before they were at her heels.

"have you given any thought to my proposal, Bella? My offer still stands. Immortality with my sister and myself, your help is all we require."

Bella shook, pushing against her arms that trapped the girl to her chest. "Don't be stubborn, Bella! This is the last time I will offer and then you are at the mercy of whatever Victoria wishes. I will force you to watch as I kill the Cullen's, Vicky will force your Edward to watch as she kills you. There will be no safety, I will raze Forks to the ground if it means I can get my hands-on Jasper."

"Why Jasper? Why can't you just leave us alone?" the human cried, fist pounding uselessly on stone arms.

"He killed my brother, ripped his head from his shoulders. It is not right to repay evil with evil, but I was evil to begin with so I hardly think it counts," Erica ground out, jaw clenching forcefully. "I cannot let them get away with killing James, my brother deserved better than to die at the hands of a bunny drinker that was a disgrace to his own kind."

She pushed Bella away from her chest and caught the girl's hands effortlessly. Ice forced on her fingers, soothing the human's burning wrist and slowly bruising hand- how foolish a person.

Her eyes flit over to the angry wolf that had stalked closer, moving in a slow winding circle. He was waiting for others to arrive and she new that none would be Paul. Jacob so clearly wanted to attack her that he would not risk anyone getting in his way- he simply underestimated how long she has been alive, how long she had fought others that now it came as second nature.

Maybe she would be willing to fight them all, to test her strength to a point of all or nothing and be done with it but not now. She had planned for every scenario and was prepared to get away no matter how many wolves appeared and in whichever combination.

Releasing the girl, Erica wiped her palms on her shirt methodically removing the dirt that only she could see. She kept her eyes on Bella, watching as the girl stumbled back toward the wolf fearfully. A brow lifted, arching at the pair.

"You would choose a life where you will die?" Erica spat when the human did not answer her. "You would rather be murdered knowing that your precious Edward will never change you unless he had no choice?"

The temperature dropped further but she was quick to reel it in- to settle her raging emotions before she snapped and went on a rampage.

She had enough with this silly game, to indecision of a foolish girl that would do anything for a man that had left her to die. Erica was embarrassed to be near such a woman- no, a child- that let her life revolve around the notion of love and a Prince Charming. If this child believed that she would always be rescued when she needed it most- that she could rely on any man, mortal or immortal, then Erica could see no problem with proving her wrong.

She could see no reason she shouldn't prove Bella that she made a horrible mistake for denying her.

"Very well, human," she sneered. "I hope you enjoy a mortal existence, one where you will die before you could even consider achieve eternity with your love."

She backed away, her fingers playing with the ice made crown that rested on her head before she tossed it easily. It rolled to her feet, thumping against the girl's shoes and falling to rest flat on the earth. Erica twirled her fingers, blue swirls creating a more intricate replacement.

"Consider it a gift, a trinket to show that the Snow Queen has granted you another day to live. Enjoy it, feeble girl, I will come to collect what is rightfully mine soon."
