Short Story #11: Freezing Time
Freezing Time
Time flies.
Everyone knows that.
Especially when you're kept busy all day. One minute, you're deep cleaning the house. The next, you're finally settling down for dinner. Another example: you're running around making necessary errands. Before you know it, the moon is up and you already have to go home.
But there are times where you wish time would just slow down. New parents always want that. They don't want their baby to grow up so they wish, more than anything, that they can freeze time to ensure they can't. And on your wedding day. You spend over a year planning it, getting everything together to make it the wedding of your dreams only for the big day to end in a flash.
Luckily, for Luna, she has that power.
Why does she possess such a power? No one knows. She doesn't even know. But she doesn't question it. All that matters is that it helps her out when she's running late for school.
Which she is.
"Luna Rae Emerson! If you're not down here in five minutes, we'll both be late!" Mrs. Emerson can be heard from downstairs running around and talking to herself.
"Coming!" That's a lie. She snaps her fingers and just like that, time has been frozen for how long it takes for her to finish her makeup.
She still had to sweep mascara across her lashes, apply mauve-hued blush to her cheeks and nude lipstick to her heart-shaped lips. She curls her hair and chooses a pair of white converse to go with her pink sundress.
Normally, she wouldn't take this long to get ready for school, but there's a boy in her English class whose attention she's determined to gain. A cold draft is coming in from the open window and she's about to close it when she notices something strange.
Everything's frozen. That part is normal. But there was someone - the new girl who just moved into the neighborhood yesterday - looking around with confused features etched into her features.
She's looking around, taking in the couple who are rooted to the same spot as they walk their dog, her parents who are glued to the ground just as they're about to get into their car and a car that won't move past the mailbox they're about to drive by.
"What the hell?" No one's ever immune to Luna's power. Everyone always freezes along with the time whenever she snaps her fingers. This is the first. Who the hell is this chick and why isn't she frozen?
No sooner after Luna shuts the window does the girl look up and see her.
