Short Story #38: My Brother's Biggest Enemy

[A prompt idea I came up with on my own, no help from Pinterest this time]

DISCLAIMER:

I have done my research on part of the content written later in this chapter (you'll see what I mean in the second scene), if I missed something, please let me know.

My Brother's Biggest Enemy

Anger coursed through my veins. The audacity that this man had to come crawling back to me after sleeping with another girl. He could go to hell for all I care. He was standing in front of me in all his glory, a devilish smile dancing across his face as he begged me to take him back. Me and my carton of apple juice had other plans. I wore a prideful smirk as juice dripped from his hair onto a puddle on the cafeteria floor.

Take that, asshole.

"Sophe." The sound of my boss's voice interrupted my book reading. Just as the book was starting to get good. I quickly pocketed my phone and tended to the customer that had just claimed a seat at the bar.

The customer being my twin brother, Seth.

It just hit six o' clock in the evening so he must've just gotten out of football practice. He didn't even bother showering before he came to the bar, a sheen of sweat on his face and his white, black and gold football sweater probably sticking to his skin.

I didn't have the best history with football players. I dated one in high school for two years. That was the biggest mistake of my life; to let someone into my heart and let myself fall in love. He was my everything. That was why it hurt like hell to see him hooking up with the head cheerleader. Then came the birth of my hatred toward football players. And cheerleaders.

He was on Seth's team. Football had been his passion since we were eight and, of course, that wasn't going to change our relationship. He was also the best player on the team and I was always going to be his biggest supporter. I just had to be careful of the players that were also players outside of the field.

His usual drink was practically tattooed into my brain - a gin and tonic - so I prepared the drink before he could even open his mouth. "Fresh out of practice, are we?" My judgemental gaze targets the sweat dripping from the ends of his hair. I even attempt to save my nose from the awful stench, but it's too strong for the material of my t-shirt

"The girls love the jocks." A cocky smirk crawled across his face. His eyes scanned the room until they landed on a group of girls who were currently giggling and glancing at him with flushed faces. Seth passed them a wink that earned a boisterous cheer from the group. "You're coming to the party, right?"

I leaned over the counter with my hands on my cheeks and my fakest smile, getting ready to give him a sarcastic remark before a familiar voice interrupted me.

"Did I hear the word 'party'?" Victoria Sanchez, who I called Tori, approached the counter after her jog she takes every night. She was someone I looked up to. No way would I be able to run without getting winded after two minutes. Anything that required exertion was not my thing. "You don't need to ask me. I'm already in."

"Well, that's great. But I have class in the morning and work right after my last class of the day. I need the rest." I lifted my shoulders in a dramatic shrug with my hands out. "Oh well." They knew better than anyone how much I detested football players. Spending a night at a house that was flooded with them was a nightmare come true. Why they even bothered bringing it up was a mystery.

"How the hell are we twins?" Seth asked me rhetorically, shaking his head as he glanced at Tori. That elicited color to spread through her cheeks. She didn't know that I knew, but she had a thing for Seth since we met her freshman year. "We're just starting our junior year. I refuse to let you spend another year hauled up in the apartment with one of your lame romance books."

I inhaled a big gasp and theatrically placed my hand over my heart. "You take that back."

My boss, Steven, walked by so that was when I grab a rag from underneath the bar and started wiping imaginary dirt off the counter to make it look like I was doing my job. A drunk man called out to me, his friends cheering and waving me over. Approaching their booth, I thought that would help me out of this conversation.

But Tori and Seth followed me.

I told the group of men that I could no longer serve them and took their cups from their table.

"Come on, Sophia. Please. I have a reputation to uphold. I can't be known as the captain of the football team whose twin sister is obsessed with reading and a hater of fun."

"You don't even have to interact with any of the other football players. You and I could just get drunk and dance together all night." Tori joined in as she bounced up and down on the balls of her feet.

I couldn't believe I was even considering this, but looking into Tori's pleading eyes and listening to Seth offering to do my laundry for me for a month - which wasn't a bad deal - I found myself not having a choice.

"Make it for two months and we have a deal."

-

The football house stunk of cigarettes and booze. A couple was in the middle of a heated makeout session against the staircase - or their tongues were in the middle of a wrestling match. I wish I could unsee that.

Guests were scattered around with red solo cups, but the majority of the party was outside where a beer pong table was set up and people were diving into the pool.

A group of the football team was huddled in a circle, but Seth was nowhere near them. He was sitting at the porch and his face lit up when he saw Tori and I step outside. His smile didn't last long when he saw me wearing the little black dress that left little to the imagination.

My breasts were spilling out of the neckline and the pencil skirt barely covered my butt. It wasn't something that I'd normally wear, but Tori reminded me of what a great body I had. She dared me to show it off to any 'smoking hot guy' that happened to look my way.

Seth stood up and stood in my personal space, covering the front of my body with his thick winter jacket.

Why, hello to you too.

"What are you doing? Get this-" I attempted to shrug the jacket off of me, but he was quick to hold it in place. He was doing his job of being an overprotective brother. I got that. But I had a plan. Any guy tries anything and their eyes would be assaulted by pepper spray. "Get this bulky jacket the fuck off of me."

"Sophia Rose Watson. You look like a whore. You can't wear a dress like that. You'll attract the wrong kind of attention."

"Did you just call your sister a whore?" Tori butted in. I envied her. She was the oldest in her family out of six kids so she didn't have to deal with brothers who were controlling over what she could wear.

"I didn't say she was a whore. I said she looks like one. Big difference."

I noticed the table of alcoholic drinks at the other end of the yard and slipped away from them unnoticed. Once I was far enough away and Tori sent me a wink to let me know I was in the clear, I took the jacket and threw it into the nearest bush.

A guy walked passed me as he smoked weed through his bong and the pungent stench prompted me to wince and turn away. Seth and I were adopted and our adoptive dad's dad was a drug addict. He was found unconscious in his bathroom with white powder on the counter and a syringe left in his arm. So drugs were a huge no-no in our family.

But our adoptive parents never said that getting hammered wasn't allowed.

I poured myself a cup of Tito's Vodka and drank it straight, a burning sensation sliding down my throat. Tori started dancing her way toward me with swaying hips when a Latino Pop song began to play. A chuckle fled from my lips as she dragged me to the makeshift dance floor behind the pool.

Boys across the lawn were looking us up and down with predatory glints in their eyes. They were biting their lips and cat-calling us which elicited a warmth to permeate through my face. However, Tori remained unfazed.

We danced to song after song until my feet were bleeding in the high heels. Good thing the blood matched the shoes. Tori dragged me back to the booze table and poured us vodka shots. Her forehead was shiny with sweat and her hair that she spent over an hour fixing up for the party was now all frizzy.

"Admit it. You're glad that Seth and I practically forced you to come to this party."

"I ain't admitting shit." Contradicting my words was a small smile plastered across my face.

"What's going on over there?" She nodded her head toward the patio with furrowed brows. I leaned up on my tippy-toes to see over a swarm of people and found Seth, still on the patio where we left him, face to face with some who looked familiar. Mixed-race skin tone, black curly hair, around six foot two. Blake Jackson, the captain of our football rivals, Colorado State Rams.

And Seth's biggest enemy.

I didn't know if it was because of the natural hatred their teams had for each other but he hated him with such a fiery passion.

"What the fuck are you doing here?" Seth asked through gritted teeth. The tension was so palpable, someone had to turn off the music. You could hear a pin drop from the other side of the lawn. "You weren't invited."

"Of course we weren't. That's what makes it fun." Blake had a smug smirk on his face that Seth was trying desperately to not punch the shit out of. The red hue on Seth's face grew darker, his jaw clenched and his hands balled into fists at his sides.

He was about to lose it.

But before he could punch Blake in the gut, another member of our team, Clayton, pulled him back and the rest of the Rams team jumped to their leader's defense. Clayton stepped in front of Seth to block him from doing anything that could land him in jail.

"I think it'd be best if you left."

Blake didn't say anything. No one did. It was dead silent as Blake and Clayton had an intense stare-down. Blake made the first move. He stepped closer to him and spoke with a volume that only those nearby could hear.

The way that Clayton gulped nervously and glanced at Seth made it look like they weren't going anywhere any time soon. The music was turned back on and everyone proceeded to talk and dance like Batman and The Joker didn't just run into each other. At least I thought they were enemies. I wasn't an avid comic reader.

My attention was brought back to Tori when she cleared her throat.

"Well, that was quite the show. Too bad we didn't have popcorn to enjoy it with it."

I poured myself another shot. "I'll drink to that."

"Be right back. I gotta pee. Don't go anywhere." She maneuvered through the crowd to get inside, leaving me alone to watch party-goers grind up against each other.

Partying wasn't my cup of tea. Only with Tori could I step out of my comfort zone and dance in front of others. Without her, I had nothing better to do than to pull my phone out of my purse and check my socials.

I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around to see a face I'd never seen before. He was good looking; dirty blonde hair, broad shoulders and sapphire blue eyes that immediately captured my attention.

"Would you like to dance with me?" His eyes were roaming all over my body and his teeth were clamped over his bottom lip. This was unprecedented territory for me. I didn't know what to say that wouldn't come across impolite, but his closeness and the lustful expression clouding his eyes made me uncomfortable.

Maybe another drink would make me feel more relaxed. Even though I'd already had three and was starting to feel the effects of the alcohol. My head was throbbing and my vision was starting to blur after the fourth shot, but I took the guy's hand and allowed me to lead me onto the dance floor. The feeling you get when you took your shoes off after a long day? Ten times more satisfying with heels.

I thought he wanted to dance with me, but he placed his hands on my hips and planted kisses on my neck and shoulder. I tried pushing him away, but his grip around my waist tightened and he started to lick my breasts. Where the hell was Tori? She must have a huge bladder if she was taking this long to pee.

"Don't fucking touch me," I heard myself mutter under my breath, but that wasn't about to stop him. His hands traveled from my waist to my butt which he squeezed so hard, I winced in pain. A group of guys nearby erupted into cheers and whistling, presumably at their friend who was basically sexually harassing me.

Vomit rushed to my throat when he picked me up over his shoulder and took me somewhere else. Music was still playing. The throbbing in my head increased tenfold. I couldn't hold it in anymore. Puke spilled out of my mouth and I was instantly dropped on the ground, the world spinning around me.

"You sick son of a bitch. You don't fucking touch her." It was a deep voice. Familiar. Was that Blake? Mystery man raised his hands up in surrender as he backed away back toward his friends who were just standing there like idiots.

"Sophie? Oh my God. I'm so sorry for leaving you alone. Are you okay?"

I stumbled as I stood up but found solace in Tori's arms. She handed me a glass of water which I downed in one go like it was my lifeline, which it kind of was. "Where's Sssseth?"

Tori gestured her head toward the living room where we could see Seth heavily making out with some random chick whose fingers were pulling at his hair. Great. Did not need to see that. "I'll get you some more water. Stay where you are this time. I mean it." She waved her finger at me before disappearing inside.

"Hey, are you alright?"

I turned around at the sound of Blake's voice.

"I saw him about to take you inside. I couldn't just let him take advantage of a beautiful girl like you."

Heat spread through my cheeks at the compliment. But it could've been the intoxication. I scoffed. "My brother said I looked like a whore."

His eyes went wide and his lips were slightly ajar. He quickly recovered from the shock though and a cheeky grin crawled across his face. "Your own brother said that? You want me to beat him up for you?"

I didn't know what prompted me to do this, but I nodded my head and pointed to the back sliding door where we could see Seth still sucking faces with the blonde. His shirt was now off and she was now straddling him, clawing his stomach. They couldn't have done this in his room? They just had to do this in the living room where they knew his sister could see?

"That's your brother?"

"Oh, hell on Earth no!" Tori interrupted. She shoved the now-full glass of water to my chest, not noticing water splash onto my dress, and pushed Blake away from me. "After what happened to my best friend, you're gonna assault her too?"

Blake held his hands up in surrender. "That is not my intention. She's in safe hands. Scout's honor."

Tori offered him a skeptical gaze, looking him up and down. She stayed there for a few lingering seconds before telling me to call her just in case he tried to hurt me and finally walking away. Blake kept switching glances between me and Seth, like a malicious plan was forming in his head. A plan that I wasn't sure I wanted to be a part of.

"Wanna ditch this lame ass party with me?"

AUTHOR'S NOTE-

I probably won't get many responses, but I'm holding onto hope.

So far, I'd written mystery, fantasy and romance. Ignoring the two poorly-written fantasy chapters written in male POV, which genre do you think I'm best at writing?

Romance --------------------------------------->

Fantasy ----------------------------------------->

Mystery ---------------------------------------->
