14. War of the Worlds

Enough of this, I thought sourly as the memory ended. No matter how much effort is put into trying to break this hold, nothing can.

While I was having a battle with myself, a loud whirring noise from above sounded. The portal. It's beginning. I forced the pain away as I heard firing above me. No doubt it was Stark trying to take out all of the Chitauri. Now I could finally see what the creatures looked like. One man in a suit was no matter for aliens from another world. I saw blurs of Chitauri fly on speeders, blasting the sight down below. People fled, screaming at the top of their lungs. Chaos at its finest, and it's only just begun. Cars exploded, tossed upside down by the impact.

I heard the faint roar of Stark's suit as he supposedly led some Chitauri away from his precious building. As I watched the madness begin, the madness in my head was lessening. To divert me more away from my pain, I heard Loki grunt. He used the scepter to get on his feet.

"Again?" he growled, limping towards me. "I grow tired of doing this." He tried to reach towards me, but I slapped him away.

"I got it under control!" I snapped, rubbing my temples. "I can manage it."

"Can you really?"

"Loki, just because I am on your side does not mean that I obey your command."

"Where would you get that ridiculous impression?"

"I am your ally, not your slave. Piss me off enough and I will hurt you."

He chuckled tiredly. "Only words, Kiara. There's no real threat behind them. Come, let's get a better view. Do you need a crutch?" He asked this mockingly.

"I can walk just fine." I swatted him away.

Loki headed out the way Stark had originally entered his building from, with me in tow. Ugh, my head. If this wasn't solved, if one side didn't obtain complete dominance over the other, it wasn't going to end well. I was lucky to keep Loki away from me; I wasn't up for another poke in the heart with the scepter.

Focus! There is a breach somewhere, that's just the start! the real me crowed. I shook my head vigorously, trying to shut her up. It all starts with a crack. He can't win!

Hush, I snarled. You are not in control here, I am.

No, Loki is. This isn't you...or me. Either way, you aren't thinking on your own!

I noticed Loki had morphed his clothes into Asgardian battle attire—helmet included. He stood almost towards the edge, watching his work take place.

Attack him! Do it now, the real me demanded.

I will put an end to you if you don't shut up.

The only way to do it is to kill me...or us. This mind control business is strange.

Destroying the body can be avoided; all I have to do is shove you out for good.

Go ahead; it'll be a battle that you'll lose.

Like a switch, I flicked off the other voice in my head.

"Imagine this around the world, Kiara!" Loki murmured. "The humans learning their place..."

"I'll picture it better once it's done." I rubbed my forehead. Loki had his back to me, so he didn't see my battle continuing.

"Loki!"

The fallen prince of Asgard and I looked towards the source of the new voice. Thor had returned. Evidently he'd survived the fall out of the Helicarrier in Loki's cage. Well, he could have easily broken out with the hammer. Thor noticed me at Loki's side.

Protectively, fire shot up through my palms.

"Turn off the Tesseract, or I'll destroy it," Thor threatened.

"You can't," Loki told him. "There is no stopping it. There is only the war."

"So be it."

Loki launched himself at Thor with a battle cry, I hung back to watch the "brothers" fight. They couldn't be more different. Whereas Thor had the hammer and the lightning on his side, Loki had the scepter. What if he took control of Thor as well?

He wouldn't be able to, just like he can't have full control over this body, the familiar me said. There has to be some way to get my body back!

Conjure up all the memories you want, it can't break this control.

After that brief interlude with the old me, I jumped into the fighting, nearly getting a hammer to the face. I rolled out of the way to see the power from Loki's scepter reflect off Thor's hammer. It blasted one of the letters off the tower, the 'K' I believe. The noises of disorder became merely background noises to the fighting going on.

Though Loki was keeping Thor pretty busy, it wasn't enough to keep him from noticing me. Every time I would dive in, Thor would either elbow or kick me away as though I were an insect. I screeched, swinging punches, watching my flames fly behind my fist. Thor ducked and struck hits on me much to my disliking.

After another hit from Thor, I was taken out of the fighting long enough to realize we had some spectators. I sidestepped away from the fight to confront the plane. No doubt Agent Romanoff was piloting it. I was sure she wasn't the only one inside. The plane was turned towards the fighting, ready to intervene.

Wanting to not get blasted, I ran back into the fighting, taking Thor out by the waist. He threw me over his head, forcing me to roll a little. I picked my head up long enough to see a blast of light impact the plane, hitting one of the engines. I laughed under my breath as the plane lost altitude, making way for the ground.

I launched myself at Thor's back, grabbing him from behind. He tried to buck me off as though he were a horse. I grunted, holding my ground. We were suddenly airborne, and I didn't get away fast enough. The air was crushed out of me between the ground and Thor. I coughed, desperate for air as he got back on his feet.

I got myself in a sitting position. Every limb in my body ached. Thor and Loki were locked in battle, the hammer and scepter at each other's throats.

"Look at this!" Thor thundered. "Look around you! You think this madness will end with your rule?"

"It's too late," Loki said. "It's too late to stop it."

"We can, together."

Did he honestly believe that Loki would decide to come back to the light and give up world domination? Thor could love his "brother" all he wanted, Loki could never be brought back.

As I was on my knees, Thor suddenly dropped the hammer, stumbling back.

"Sentiment," I heard Loki spit.

I didn't think he anticipated Thor's outrageous counter attack. Thor grabbed Loki and tossed him into another window, shattering the glass. I watched in slight terror as the God of Thunder picked up Loki, holding him over his head. He slammed the God of Mischief down on the ground, stomach first. I cringed, feeling the impact.

As I was finally on my feet once again, Loki rolled off of Stark Tower only to be caught by a passing speeder. Sure, leave me to deal with Thor. I crouched into a fighting stance once Thor realized I was still around. He regarded me cautiously, tensed, but not making the first move.

"It does not have to be this way," he said calmly. "I know you can fight the control, Kiara. You must. Even now, I can see you struggling."

I shook my head, fighting off the voice shouting in the back of my mind.

"We need you back."

"Why? So S.H.I.E.L.D. can hold me as ransom against Loki?" I roared.

"I do not want to have to fight you."

"Looks like you have no choice in the matter."

I lunged for Thor, hoping to strike a punch in. He jumped out of my way, which only infuriated me more. Coward. He's afraid to hit a woman. I beckoned him towards me.

"If you run, I'll follow," I threatened.

"Kiara, listen to yourself!" he thundered. "This is not you."

I found an interesting piece of metal near my feet, speckled with blood—Thor's I assumed. I picked it up, smirking, looking at the God of Thunder mischievously. Let's have some fun.

I kept my patience in check this time, keeping the bloody metal at my side. Thor watched my every move with attentive blue eyes. Mjolnir was right in his hand obedient like an animal, ready to strike at me. I could see the reluctance in his stance, how it would probably hurt him to strike a woman.

I feigned a high move only to duck and try and stab Thor again. He blocked my attack with a beefy arm, shoving me back. I stayed on my feet, nearly getting my head taken off by his hammer. I gritted my teeth in outrage. You just had to leave, didn't you, Loki? If I die because of you, I will haunt you until you beg for death!

An unusual noise stopped our fighting temporarily. We both craned our heads upwards only to see a new beast enter the game. The best way to describe it was a transportation animal that had Chitauri riding in it. It was decked out in some seriously heavy armor. Its overall appearance made it seem tough, so the armor had to be just a precaution.

It roared as it nonchalantly took out tops of buildings. I was in awe yet terrified by the creature. There's no way the Avengers can take out that. It looks invincible. I had a feeling that that beast wasn't the only one the Chitauri had waiting on the other side of the portal.

It looked like it was going to be down to the last soldier to win this battle.

I didn't realize just how much I was distracted until I felt a sudden, white-hot burst of pain. I didn't even yell, the impact struck me in the face. My body took the harsh fall. Disorientation wasn't helping me stay conscious. Alarm bells rang in my brain.

The last things I remembered were my body throbbing in pain, the faint cries of civilians as they tried to find cover, and a sky raining Chitauri.
