twenty-four. a credible threat

Luna

A WEEK HAS PASSED since the pack has been reunited. Everyone has worked on getting things back to normal, Lydia especially, and back on track to figure out how to deal with La Bête du Gévaudan. However, I wouldn't say the week has been normal for me. After the switch was flipped in my brain, the puberty effects have decreased tremendously. I've felt more stable than I've been in quite a long time, but nobody can tell. I've had to fake being overly emotional to everything so as to keep the pack from figuring out something was different.

A week has also passed since the last time I saw Theo. Mainly because Scott was able to convince me to move in with him until we figure out my evolvement. His mother didn't mind, actually she welcomed me with open arms. I cried. With legitimate tears instead of forced emotional ones. To say living in a house with more than one person in it was refreshing was an understatement. It felt so right to be in a warm home where I was greeted with warm smiles every morning. It just reminded me of how much I was forced to miss: a normal family.

The journals proved to be useless. The very last journal was a detailed description on how it felt to be the first werewolf of their bloodline. They also managed to keep their gender under wraps as if those of us reading centuries later would know who they were. The only thing I can distinctly remember is their affair, and it was safe to say that information wasn't needed.

Tonight was Beacon Hills versus Devenford Prep charity lacrosse game. There had been a huge banner hanging for the occasion, but the night before it was torn apart by the Beast. According to Argent, the Beast was continuously getting smarter since it had tried to set a trap for him, Scott, Stiles, Liam, and the Hellhound. Anyway, it would be the first lacrosse game I've ever attended to in all of my years in high school. I seem to be the only one excited for it, but then again the pack has been to and played a fair share of lacrosse games. Pulling the strap of my bag higher on my shoulder and then pulling my hair out from under my jacket, I catch sight of Mason and Corey hurrying out of the boy's locker room. Quickly, I catch up to the pair and call out their names.

"Hey, Luna," Mason greets distractedly over his shoulder. Corey and I share a smile as we follow the dark skinned boy.

"Is there a reason we're walking so fast?" I ask. Mason keeps pace a few feet ahead of us, Corey shrugs his shoulders.

"He said something about the Beast and then took off," Corey tries to make sense of Mason's hurry.

Mason rounds a corner, "It's frequency." Corey and I jog to catch up. "Every time the Beast shows up. Liam and Hayden saw it at the cell transmission towers. The attack downtown happened right near the radio astronomy observatory. Deaton was attacked by the Beast at an army base which has huge radar arrays."

"Still not getting it," Corey states as we near the news vans who are going to be filming tonights game. Having missed most of the conversation, I was with Corey in not understanding what Mason was talking about.

"The Beast always shows up near a transmission source. What if that's how the Dread Doctors are doing it? By broadcasting a high-frequency transmission."

"So we should be looking for some sort of transmission?"

"We don't have to look." Mason stares as a news anchor starts to interview Brett Talbot, a cocky lacrosse player from Devenford Prep.

"While tonight's game is a charity event, we hear Devenford Prep and Beacon Hills have a long-standing rivalry," the news anchors says.

Brett chuckles, "Devenford always plays to win, but especially when it's for charity."

"And especially when one hundred percent of the proceeds go to the winning team, isn't that right?"

"Which is why we'll be one hundred percent kicking Beacon Hills' ass."

I drown out the rest of the interview and turn to Mason, "Are you saying the frequency triggers the Beast and the news vans are a trigger?"

"And are you saying that thing's going to be out there tonight?" Corey adds.

"I'm saying... People are going to die." He turns to look at the news van and nods. "A lot of people."

After a few seconds of silence, I say, "Well, there goes my night."

〰〰〰

"Mason said it's not just a transmitted frequency," Liam starts to explain across the table from me. Stiles sits next to him, Lydia sits at the head of the table, and Scott stands with his hands on the back of my chair and the corner of the table by Lydia's elbow. "It's high-powered. Like it has to be a really strong signal."

"And that's causing it to shift?" Lydia asks, her curious mind back to work as it should be.

"No. I don't think it's just that. Last night Argent said that it's getting smarter. What if the Dread Doctors are trying to make the Beast grow faster?" Scott inquires.

Stiles furrows his brows, "With frequencies?"

"No, by shifting," Scott corrects. "The frequency is just the trigger. The important part is when it shifts into the werewolf."

"Like Peter," Lydia concludes.

"Right," Scott points at her for coming up with the correct comparison. I nod my head as I take in all of the information. "Yeah, when Peter was an Alpha, he got stronger every full moon. Eventually, the burns healed and he was back to normal."

Liam stares down at the table as he puts the pieces together, "So the Dread Doctors don't want to wait for the full moon."

Scott nods, "They want the Beast to be as strong as possible, as fast as possible."

"Because of Parrish."

"If this is happening tonight," Lydia begins, "what are we going to do?"

Stiles raises a fingers up, "Uh, we've got one clue to go on." He pulls out a evidence picture and places it in front of us. "This came from the hospital."

"From when the Hellhound and the Beast fought?" I ask as we all lean forward to study the picture. It was a bloody shoe print.

"Yeah. Whoever's lurking inside the Beast is wearing a size ten of indeterminate make."

"Indeterminate?" Lydia asks, exasperated.

"Means, it's a partial print. Basically, it was all we were able to get considering all the fire, blood and carnage."

"How many size tens are out there?" Scott questions from his now squatted position next to me.

"Only one with Parrish's blood on the sole."

"If they hadn't washed them that is," I point out. Stiles shakes his head at me.

"So are we going to try to get the game canceled?" Liam asks.

I can feel a sarcastic remark coming on from Stiles, "No, no, we're going to play, but we're just going to hope really hard that it doesn't turn into a blood-soaked massacre."

"Okay, but, um, aren't we kind of missing out on a chance to catch this thing?" Liam's suggestion makes my brows shoot up in surprise. "We don't have the who, but we have the where and the when." Apparently, I'm not the only one impressed with the Beta as Stiles leans back in his seat and looks up at Scott and so does Lydia. I'm the last one to look up at the Alpha.

"There's too many people."

"And we still don't actually know if it's going to happen," Lydia states reluctantly. "It just might end up being a regular lacrosse game. It's possible, right?"

"Oh, you're so cute, Lydia," I say, putting my hand on my chest where my heart should be.

"That's absolutely possible," Stiles concurs.

"So we're still getting the game canceled?" Liam asks playing with his fingers.

Scott agrees, "We're getting the game canceled." We all stand up and head for the exit when Lydia slows down in front of me.

"You alright, Lyds?" I place a hand on her arm as she stops.

She nods and grins cheekily, "Yeah, I'm okay, Luna Dean." I snort at the sound of my middle name. "Go on. I'll see you later." We share a hug before I'm on my way.

The rest of us go our separate ways for the mean time, all of us having different things to have taken care of. As for myself, I'm heading to my truck so I can head over to my temporary home to finish up homework as the other's figure out a way to cancel the game. With my keys out, I try to unlock my truck door when a voice makes me drop them on the ground.

"So you moved in with McCall?" Theo asks, leaning against the hood.

"Get off my truck, Theo," I say bitterly. The day was going so well despite the fear of the Beast showing up tonight. He complies but it's only to stand closer to me.

"What? Worried about not being able to control your adolescent urges?" I continue to glare at him. The smirk is ever present on his face as he goes on, "But how can that be true when you don't even feel those anymore?" My eyes widen at this as I look around to see if any of the pack members were around.

"How did you know that?"

He ignores the question, "I heard you took Corey's pain that night in Eichen. How's that been going for you?" The way he's acting and staring down at me makes me think he knows more than he's letting on.

"Theo, how do you know so much?" I hiss stepping toward him threateningly.

His smirk somehow seems bragging, "Didn't you read the journals?"

I roll my eyes, "Yeah, but there's nothing in them. It's all useless, day-to-day bull-" The expression on his face makes me stop. "You couldn't have! What did you get out of it that I didn't?"

He shrugs, "I guess you've just got to know the right names."

"The right names? Theo, what the hell are you talking about?" My voice raises as he begins to walk away.

"I'll see you around, Luna," he gives me a two fingered wave as he makes his way to his vehicle.

"No, Theo! Tell me what you mean!" I glare at his retreating figure until he's in his truck and out of the parking lot. I huff and pick up my keys.

"You've just got to know the right names." What does that even mean?

How could someone who's not even a part of my family be able to decipher journals from my ancestors? It didn't make any sense whatsoever and Theo "Cryptic Jackass" Raeken wasn't going to tell me anything. The list of reasons why I should've ripped his throat out while I could just steadily gets longer with each passing day. I climb into my truck and agitatedly drive over to Scott's house. There wasn't time for me to worry about this right now. I had to do my homework before I potentially go and get myself killed tonight.

〰〰〰

The entire pack showed up tonight. We're all gathered in a classroom, discussing what everyone's doing tonight. I'm sitting on the teacher's desk next to Stiles while Mason and Liam sit at a desk and the rest stand by the windows.

"Mason, you know your part," Scott starts walking to the middle of the group.

"Corey and I break into the Devenford Bus and search their shoes," Mason finishes.

Malia continues, stepping up to Kira who's leaning again the desk Liam and Mason are at, "I take out the TV vans."

"Right before the whistle, Coach forfeits the game," Stiles states.

Liam informs, "The rest of us are looking for a size ten with a bloody sole." Scott nods around the group with a smile of approval.

"Just out of curiosity," Malia starts, as usual bringing in the pessimistic attitude. "What if it doesn't work? What if we have to go up against this thing? I mean, I hate to bring up bad memories but Scott's still healing from what Theo did to him."

Kira answers almost right after Malia's done speaking, "No, he's not." Everyone looks at Scott and he smiles. I do the same, but I notice how quick Kira was to shoot down Malia's statement.

"She's right." He pulls up his jersey and, sure enough, his skin is smooth and healed. Stiles leans slightly forward towards his stomach in shock. "It happened the night we got Lydia out of Eichen House. I healed. When we were all together again, when we were a pack." It's hard for me to contain my excitement and I reach and squeeze Stiles' shoulder to help, still staring at Scott. He turns to look at me and quietly laughs at the excitement on my face. Scott's puppy dog smile appears at the sight of my happiness.

"The Beast doesn't have a pack," Liam concludes.

"Not like us," Scott says with a full smile. "We can do this, guys. No one dies tonight." I'm so pumped I jump up and go around giving every person a hug. I save Scott for last and almost squeal into his ear.

"Great speech," I state as I pull away. "Let's go out smart some bad guys." I skip out of the room, cheering, leaving everyone else in the room laughing. I'm the first one of the pack out on the sidelines, but Scott and Stiles are the first ones I see plant themselves on the bench to get ready. I walk over to them and lean over behind them. "This is exciting." Stiles flinches at my voice but sighs when he realizes it was just me. Scott shakes his head amusingly at him.

"What? The possibility of everything going wrong and us getting everyone killed?" He asks, fumbling with his gloves.

"No, the fact that this is the first time I'm going to watch you guys play lacrosse. Did you know, I've always wanted to join the team?" I ask , looking in between the two. Their expressions soften.

"That's honestly adorable. You're just a ball of sunshine, aren't you? I almost don't want to remind you we're not actually playing the game tonight," He states seriously but he has a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. I shrug sheepishly and stare out onto the field where there are players from both teams warming up. Stiles stands up and walks over to Coach Finstock and I take his seat. I use my werewolf hearing to listen to the conversation.

"Hey, Coach, now is the, uh, time to forfeit the game." There's a beat of silence as Coach looks down at his whistle. "Now's the perfect time to forfeit the game." Coach looks up with a smug smile and crosses his arms over his chest. "You got to... Coach."

"Stilinski, I've never forfeited a game and I never will." Coach laughs. "Get on the field." He blows his whistle and everyone starts to cheer. Scott and I stand up as Stiles turns to look at us. I stare up at Scott with a worried expression on my face. His is full of astonishment and he grips my shoulders when he sees mine.

"Scott, I'm not feeling as excited as I was."

"It's all right. We're still going to do as planned. Just half of us are going to be playing a lacrosse game on top of it. Just breathe, Luna." As he says this, I take huge gulps of air to calm myself down.

"McCall! Are you ready to be a team player and win us this charity game?" Coach Finstock yells from behind me as he approaches Scott. "Who's this? You're new girlfriend?"

Scott immediately let's go of me and we both step away from each other, "What? No, Coach, I'm with Kira."

Coach nods, "That's right. Then, who are you?"

"Luna Louve, sir," I state meekly.

"Louve," He repeats shaking a finger at me. "Didn't I have your brother?"

"More than likely, yeah."

"What's he doing now?"

"Wouldn't know, sir, him and the rest of my family abandoned me as a child." The statement flusters him and causes him to awkwardly stutter then walk away.

"I haven't seen him that flustered since Winter Formal a couple years ago," Scott chuckles.

Scott's pulled away by Liam, leaving me to go search for the bloody shoe but I keep getting distracted by the game. Not very long into it, we were down by four and Kira had been kicked out of the game. I can tell Scott's worried about her but with the help of Brett Talbot's little sister, he's relieved to get back into the game. That is until later in the game when he's running off the field and towards the school. Giving up on half-ass looking for the bloody shoe, I chase after Scott. Now suddenly aware of the sounds of people fighting.

"Scott! Who's fighting?" I call out to him, easily catching up with him.

"It's Kira and Lori. Something's wrong with Kira. We've gotta help," he says still running full force to the school. The sounds lead us to the hallway outside of Coach's office where we find Kira throwing Lori to the floor. Scott doesn't hesitate to intervene. "Hey, stop! What are you doing?" He grabs Kira's arm, but she throws him to the ground next to Lori.

"Kira!" I yell, but that just turns her eyes on me to attack.

"Friend of yours?" Lori asks Scott.

"Girlfriend."

Kira starts swinging her fist at me, but I use my arms to block it. A couple of techniques Scott has taught me to protect myself. I doubt he thought I'd need it against Kira. Scott scrambles to his feet.

"Kira," Scott calls, breathing deeply. Her eyes focus on him once she successfully knocks me off my feet. She walks slowly towards him. "Stop." He glances at the wolf still scrambling on the floor away from the kitsune. "Kira!" Kira swings both her arms but Scott catches both of them. He pushes her inside an empty classroom and Lori and I follow them in. He shoves her into the teacher's desk with the orange light of a fox outlining her body. He roars, "Kira!"

Almost instantly, the spirit is gone and Kira's eyes return to their natural shade. She stares up at Scott, who's looking down at her with concern, then to me, and finally looks at Lori who has a busted lip.

"Oh, my God," she whispers. "What did I do?" Scott looks back at us but doesn't say anything.

Screams echo through the halls and people start running past the open door. Lori steps into the hall to check out what's going on, but Scott already knows. He follows and pulls her back into the room, shutting the door with them. The distant roaring could be heard from inside the room as it got closer. Each of us try to stay quiet as we watch out the window of the classroom door. A few seconds pass before a shadowy, dark figure runs past us.

Kira pants, "What-What was that?"

Scott slowly opens the door and a shiver runs through my body by what's revealed. Four, long claw marks slashed across the opposite door.

La Bête du Gévaudan is here.

Hi, guys! How are ya? It's only been a week but it feels like forever. In this chapter, I mention some scenes from the first season which makes me so happy to think about. Luna was so cute in today's chapter honestly I can't handle her sometimes. Next chapter is just as intense as this one maybe even more because it reveal A LOT.
Also, I want to thank the person who left a really long, really heartwarming comment on the last chapter and nominated me for the Teen Wolf Fanfictions. I literally almost cried. Thank you so much, you know who you are! (If anyone else wants to nominate me, pm or comment for details).
I hope you enjoyed the chapter! Please vote or comment what you think!
