twenty-three. amplification and lie ability

Luna

"PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW visitor procedure," the nurse says as he opens the gate and let's people pass.  "Eichen House has a wide range of patients and we cannot guarantee the safety of those who deviate from the rules."

Malia, Kira, and I glimpse at each other when we walk past him unnoticed.  I fix the Mets ball cap Stiles let me use to hide my impressionable hair.  It's tucked into the cap as I wear it backwards to keep myself unsuspected.  The nurse gets to the front of the group and leads us inside the eery building.  As the rest of the people head towards the receptions desk, the three of us hurry over to the adjacent wall to hide as the visitors get checked in.  I stand in between Kira and Malia which almost makes me laugh because Malia's taller than me but Kira's shorter.  We wait there for a short few minutes for Malia's person on the inside to come distract the nurse up front, Schrader.  We hear a door open and a few gasps.

"Not again, Nelson," Schrader says before we hear someone running.  First, a naked kid runs past us and then Schrader does a couple of seconds later.  Hurriedly, we sneak around the corner and run back into the office

"It's natural," we hear Nelson say.

The nurse replies, "So is fifty thousand volts."  What follows is electric crackling and Nelson screaming.  We walk inside the office and sure enough right behind it is the electrical room.  Kira enters the room first, followed by me, and then Malia who shuts and locks the door behind her.

Kira looks around before looking at Malia and I excitedly, "We're in.  We did it."

"Don't get too excited.  Getting out's the hard part," Malia states, pulling out her phone.  "Twelve minutes." She heads straight for the large cable box on the wall and rips the door open.  "Okay, Kira.  You can do this.  Eleven minutes."

Kira steps toward the box full of wires and studies it.  She looks over the piece of paper Stiles had given to her to find the wires she was supposed to touch.

"I think it's these," Kira points to two black wires.  "But they're covered in rubber."  Malia looks around for something to use as Kira looks inside the cable box.  Malia walks over to the desk in the corner of the room and grabs something from the pencil cup.  I only catch the glimmer of the metal scissors when she's about to cut into the rubbered wires.  Luckily, Kira's able to stop her.  "You want to electrocute yourself?"

"I'll heal," Malia shrugs.

Kira takes the scissors away, "Not if you die."

Malia scrunches her face together up in distaste as she thinks of another solution.  When she does, she flicks her claws out making Kira and I both widen our eyes.  She claws open the wires and her claws come back blackened.

She holds them up and says, "I didn't die."  Kira and I give each other incredulous looks before giving them to Malia.  Kira nods and Malia pulls out her phone.  "Four minutes."

Kira sighs and stares up at the wires.

I step up beside her, "Don't worry too much about it alright, Kira?  Just focus and it'll come to you."  She nods but I can tell she doesn't believe me.

"I can smell how nervous you are," Malia says.

"Not helping," Kira responds.  I send Malia a look.

"Okay," Malia steps into Kira's peripheral vision.  "You can do this.  It's just like we practiced."

"You mean like when I caused a major blackout?"

"Not like that, no."  Malia steps away with her phone out.

"Just focus, Kira.  I know you can do this," I encourage.

"Ten seconds.  Nine," Malia starts to count down.  "Eight..."

"Please stop counting," Kira sighs.  I step back to give her room, but Malia does the opposite and stands directly behind her.  She grabs hold of the wires but nothing happens.

"Why isn't it working?" Malia asks, worried.

"Because I have no idea what I'm doing," Kira state defeatedly.  She exhales deeply and closes her eyes.

Malia's close to losing her cool, "Kira, nothing's happening."

"I'm aware of that.  I don't want to lose control because I'm scared I might fry the entire system."

Malia sighs and steps up beside her, "Stop worrying about what you might do.  This isn't about you or me or Luna.  It's about Lydia.  We're here to save Lydia.  We're here to save our friend."

Kira nods and returns her hands to the wires.  Malia gets back just in time as electricity starts to zap around inside the cable box.  The lights start to flicker and Malia and I grin at each other.

"Kira, it's working.  Keep going."  The light get dimmer and dimmer as Kira is finally able to focus and do what she needs to.

Malia runs to the computer once it beeps and taps the keys revealing, "KEYCARD SYSTEM: ⚠ REBOOT INITIATED."  Malia smiles at me as Kira finally let's go of the wires.  I quickly wrap my arms around Kira and squeeze her into a bone crushing hug that Malia immediately joins into.  We wait a few minutes before we look out the door to see if we could leave.

"Those guards shouldn't be there," Malia states as we watch two guards come in through the front doors.

Kira suggests, "We could get past them."

"We could.  But we don't want to set off any alarm until Lydia is out."

Over the guard's radio, someone says, "Perimeter security, check in pleasePerimeter, do you copy?"  The two guards take off in a hurry as we shut the door.  In the short couple of minutes we have to wait, Kira asks me some questions to pass the time.

"Were you able to finish the journal today?"

I sigh, "No.  This one is strangely longer than the others."  She nods but I continue, "But that's not even the weirdest part about it.  Whoever wrote it never signed each entry like the others did.  It's like they never thought they'd have anyone to pass the journal on to and no one who'd care who the journal was written by."

"Does it even have any information that'll help you?"

"Well, for a third of the book, they weren't even a werewolf.  It's not until then they mention anything about changing during a full moon and barely remembering anything the next day.  In the part I last read, they mentioned an affair with this man named Sebastien but I doubt that means anything."

"So, it's a woman?  Right?"

"It could be, yes, but there's also a chance they were gay and hiding it.  Which, if I'm being honest, would make more sense or my family would've told me the start of our werewolf bloodline came from a woman."

"Are you sure?  I mean they didn't tell you you could evolve.  What's saying they wouldn't keep that from you?" Before I can respond, we hear Schrader speaking on the other side of the door.

"Visiting hours are well past over," he says as Kira places her ear against the door and Malia and I use our wolf hearing.

"We're not here to visit," a semi-familiar, feminine voice answers.  We glance at each other in confusion as someone walks forward.

Then, unmistakably, I hear Theo's voice say, "We're here for Lydia Martin." My anger flares up just from the sound of his voice and I'm ready to launch myself out of the room, but Malia holds me back and keeps me quiet.  We hear Schrader gulp before the sound of glass breaking and his body hit the floor.  Their steps echo as they leave the lobby.  Malia waits until I stop thrashing about before letting me go.

She stares at me, "You good?"

I nod and mumble under my breath, "I should've ripped his throat out when I had the chance."

"Like when you were sleeping with him?" Malia asks, not hiding the bite in her words.

I give her an obvious stare, "Yeah."

We hurry into the lobby and Malia crouches next to Schrader.  She slaps him across the face causing him to grunt weakly.  Electricity starts to cackle and I notice Kira's hands are the cause of it.

"It's started," Kira announces, staring at her hands.

Malia nods, "We need to get you out of here."

She heads for a side door, but Kira starts to panic, "What about the others?"

"They should already be back at the morgue.  Let's go."  They take off into the hall beyond the door and I follow cautiously behind, having already faced Kira when she was electrified and it being enough for me.  We run into the morgue and hurry over to our getaway door.  Alarms start blaring making us pause for a second, but we continue to the door.  As soon as Malia touches the door she's thrown back and since Kira had her hand on Malia's shoulder, she's thrown back into me.  She lands on top of me, but is quick to roll off.  The alarm continues blaring overhead of us as we help each other up.  Malia sighs, "Lockdown."

Kira's whole body starts to flicker with electricity and Malia's eyes show bright blue.  I squeeze my eyes shut, not wanting them to see my new werewolf eye color just yet.  Once I'm sure they won't change, I open them again.  The light in the morgue goes out as the electricity floods into Kira's body.

"I don't know how long I'm going to last," she says with her fists clenched.

"How did you stop it before?" Malia asks, afraid something terrible was going to happen.

"Scott carried me outside, which almost killed him."

"Okay, uh.  Maybe we could try grounding you to something."

"You have a degree in electrical engineering?  'Cause I don't know how to do that."

"No, but I've got a really smart person to help me figure something out," Malia points at me desperately.

"There's nothing in here that'll ground her unless we can somehow get to the actual ground from here," I state pathetically.  Suddenly, electricity began shooting from Kira all over the room causing Malia and I to jump into cover.

"You guys have to get out of here," Kira says gripping on the doors that hold dead bodies.

"I can't leave you," Malia argues.

"We can't leave you!" I correct her.

Kira cringes, "I should've stayed in the desert with the Skinwalkers.  I can't control this.  I'm never going to be able to."

"Kira, it worked," Malia declares, standing up.  "You saw it work.  You controlled it enough to cause the brownout.  You can stop it."

Kira's head snaps towards Malia panting and, in a distorted voice, says, "I can't.  Malia, Luna, go!"  The electricity goes haywire, keeping us all in place.  I cover my head and hide behind the examination table.

Suddenly, it goes quiet and I hear Malia's voice, "Kira?"  I stand up from my position the same time as Malia does and we see Kira has knocked herself unconscious.  We step closer and just as Malia is about to check her pulse, someone behind me stops her.

"I wouldn't do that."  I whip around and spot Josh, the kid Theo killed on the rooftop, standing in the doorway.  "Electricity's still coming off her.  I can feel it from here."  Malia steps wearily around Kira to stand next to me.  "I can help her."

"Why?"

"Because I need your help.  With him."  He steps to the side and my eyes instantly go to the boy who looks like he'd been fried over an open fire.

"Corey," I whisper into a gasp.  Malia grabs my arm to keep me from going after the boy writhing in pain, but I rip my arm out of her grasp and go anyway.  He doesn't flinch as I come closer and it makes me happy he isn't afraid of me.  My finger touch his shoulder gingerly, but he flinches then.  "Oh, Corey, what happened?"

Josh answers for him, "The Hellhound burned him."  Tears gather in my eyes as Corey yells out in pain.

"Come on, help me get him into the room and on the table," I demand Josh and he doesn't hesitate.  Corey's yelps progressively get worse as we move him.  Even when he's finally laying down.

"Why isn't he healing?" Josh asks Malia.

She shakes her head, "Maybe he can't.  Maybe it's too much.  Or maybe it's the pain."

"He's going to die, isn't he?"

"His heartbeat's getting slower."  My tears don't stop as their conversation goes on and Josh panics more.

"What do we do?  You can't heal him, can you?"

"I can take his pain," I interject and reach to grab Corey's hand, but I stop.  "But I don't know how.  Malia, can you teach me?"  I stare up at her with pleading eyes.  Her eyes are sympathetic but I can tell she has other ideas.

"Take his pain?  Would that even help?" Josh asks, noticing our shared looks.

"It could.  It might even get him to start healing."

"Then do it."

"You first," she say pointing at Kira.  Just then, electricity shoots out around the room.  "You said you could help her."

"Yeah, but it's not like taking voltage from a car battery," he excuses.  "She's got a lot more power than that."  Corey groans again and I lose my patience.  "Are you going to do something or not?"  Josh panics losing his patience also.

"When you help her.  I don't trust you."

"I don't trust you, either," he shoots back.

"Then, trust me!" I yell, making him snap his head towards me.  "Josh, does it look like I would let Corey die?  I tried everything I could to save him the first time when the Dread Doctors killed him!  I'm not about to let him die because you guys can't cooperate so trust me!"  Maybe it was the desperation in my voice or maybe he saw I was being sincere, but he nods and walks over to Kira.

"Okay, Luna.  All you have to is take hold of his hand and focus on siphoning all of his pain into you.  You already care enough so it should be easy for you," Malia talks me through and when I'm sure I can do it, I give Josh a nod.  At the same time, I focus on taking Corey's pain and Josh starts absorbing Kira's power.  My veins start to protrude and turn black.  As pain starts to fill up my entire body, my jaw clenches and I scream into my teeth.  The only thing keeping my hands on Corey is the sound of him inhaling like it's the first full breath he's had in hours.

It only takes a minute before the pain inside of Corey has subsided enough for him to start healing and I can let go.  My entire body is filled with a dull ache but it's nothing I can't handle.  Josh is just standing from helping Kira and is about to take my place next to Corey when I grab his arm.  He's only slightly alarmed and settles on glaring down at me.

"You tell Theo if he ever puts Corey in another situation like this because of his idiotic plans, I'll barbeque him myself," I growl.  His face becomes somewhat frightened and I'm sure its because my eyes have flashed momentarily.  I walk over to stand next to Malia and Kira, who's wide awake and aware.

Josh helps Corey stand and Corey asks openly, "Anybody know how we're supposed to get out of here?"

"This place is still on lockdown," Malia answers.

Corey glances at the door to the outside and Kira knocks down that idea, "It's not just locked."

"Yeah, I can feel it, too," Josh states.

"What are we supposed to do?  Just wait here," Corey asks.

"There's a plan B," I reassure.

Malia adds, "Yeah, we've got a guy on the outside in case this happens."

Another question from Corey, "Who?"

"Mason," Kira answers.

Corey's face is surprised, "Mason's going to unlock the lockdown?"

"How's he going to do that?" Josh questions, shaking his head in disbelief.

Kira replies, "He's got the blueprint of the building.  And he has the full map of Eichen's electrical system.  All he has to do is get into the transformer shed behind the building."

The two Chimera's look at each other as if they thought we were crazy for trusting Mason in doing this.

"Don't worry," Malia says.  "Mason knows exactly what he's doing."

Not too long after, the light above us flickered on and off.  Josh had been messing with the door the led us out of the building and the rest of us had stayed where we were.

"He did it," Corey announces just as Josh opens the door.

Malia turns to Kira and I and says, "We got to get to Stiles' jeep."  We run to the door as Josh goes to help Corey.

"Wait, Luna!"  Corey yells from behind me.  I stop at the door and turn with my hand on the doorway.  "Thank you for saving me."  He smiles at me with the same shy smile I saw when I'd made him hot chocolate.  I grin at him and shoot him a wink before running out after Kira and Malia.  They're already inside of the jeep with Kira in the back and Malia driving.  I climb inside the already open passenger door and slam it behind me.  Malia hits the pedal, shooting us off and out to the front of Eichen House.  Scott has just placed the vent back in the street when we pull around and Stiles has to pull him back out of the street.  I'm the first one out of the jeep as Malia moves the gear into park.

"Oh my gosh, Lydia!"  I exclaim in relief as I catch sight of the exhausted red head in the arms of Jordan Parrish.

"Is she okay?"  Malia asks when she climbs out of the jeep.

"No, we need to go.  Give me the keys," Scott says, holding out his hand.  "We got to get her to the clinic."  There's slashing before Parrish tumbles over into me.  I catch him and hold him up.  He turns in my arms to find Tracy standing behind him.

"Sorry, but she's coming with me," Tracy states, holding her claws to Lydia's stomach.

"Okay.  Tracy, just wait.  You don't know what's about to happen," Scott tries to negotiate.

"I'm taking her.  That's what's happening. And none of you are going to do a thing..."  I'm about to bare my canines at her when Tracy's suddenly falling forward and Natalie, Lydia's mother, turns up behind her.  Stiles catches Lydia in his arms as she starts to fall to the ground.

Natalie holds up the electric stick the guards of Eichen use and asks angrily, "Could somebody please get my daughter out of this hellhole?"  There's no need for us to be told twice.  Scott and Stiles don't hesitate in helping Lydia into the back of the jeep.  Within seconds, the jeep is pulling away from the curb and speeding down the road to the Animal Clinic.  Lydia's mother jumps into her car and speeds off after them.  The rest of us — Parrish, Liam, Malia, Kira, and I — glance nervously around at each other, worried the two boys wouldn't be able to make it there on time to save our friend.

"If I go home now, I won't know if she made it or not," I declare out into the open.

"Then, just go home knowing that she did because it's Lydia," Malia states, staring off down the street.  "She'll make it."

Malia's words seem to instill a new found hope in everyone's mood.  In a small act of gratitude, I walk around giving everyone hugs.  I start with Malia, move on to Kira, then to Parrish, and end on Liam.  They're all slightly surprised, Parrish more than anyone, but ever since the night in the Animal Clinic when Deaton was brought back, everyone seemed to know this was just something my emotions coerced me to do.

As I'm hugging Liam, I tell him, "Hug Mason for me, too.  If it wasn't for him, all our asses would still be in that place."  Liam hugs me closer to him as he laughs before pulling away.

After finally saying my goodbyes, I walk down the street to my truck and head home.  Once I'm there, I lock every door and window in my house that I can find and shut myself in my room.  When everything's finally done and I sit down on my bed, I allow myself to acknowledge what I've felt since taking Corey's pain.  The dull ache was still there, but I can feel something else lurking behind it.  Something that I knew wasn't there before.  While I was taking Corey's pain, I felt something inside of me grow and something in my brain switched.  It isn't something I've experience before so I can't put a name to what I'm feeling.  But I know that, for now, I'll have to keep this to myself.  There's too much for the pack to worry about than to add myself to the equation.  I'll figure this out when it's all over.

At least, that's what I thought.

Hey, guys! Another update!  We just got Lydia out if Eichen and Luna helped my smol bean Corey.  I honestly love Malia.  I hope you comment the hell out of the part when Malia says she Luna should've ripped Theo's throat out while they were doing the deed because that's my favorite part in this chapter.
The first part of my Bellamy Blake fanfic is almost done.  How many of you would like to read it?  It may come out before summer but probably not.
I hope you enjoyed this chapter!  Please vote or comment what you think!
