AFTER DEATON WAS ABLE to tell me all he knew about how I was evolving and different ways to cope with it, he advised me to stay as far away from Theo as I could be if I didn't want a repeat of the night before. I told him that I would once I got my family journals back from him. If I was going to figure out what I was turning into, it would be easier if I could know what my ancestors knew. It was the only thing left that would be able to tell me my family history since I had no one else around. That night when I got home, I found a surprise in my bed. On top of my pillows laid the pile of journals with a note on top.
It read, "sorry for the inconvenience. you don't have to rip my throat out now. theo. ps. still up for round two if you want it."
Did that stop me from wanting to rip his throat out? No. But now I had my family journals back and I could finally get started. The only bad part is now Theo either knew exactly what I was going to be evolving into or these journals proved to be an absolute waste of time. Which I wouldn't be able to tell until I read it all since there was no way Theo would tell me. Not wanting to wait to read the journals, I sat on the edge of my bed and started with the first book on the pile.
"It's June 1995..."
I whisper to myself, "This is going to be a long night."
The next morning, I stop at a fast food restaurant and order their strongest coffee, even though I hate coffee with a burning passion, to keep me awake. It was too early to head to the store to buy energy drinks so I had to settle for a cup of coffee. Actually, I'd bought four cups of them and was already on my second one, but that was beside the point. Staying up all through the night proved to be a poor decision when the sun was rising and I realized I had school in a few short hours. But I had read all but one of the journals, which dates back to around the late 1700s. From what I've read, each journal is written by each person who is born with the light blue hair and so far each person is a male. The odds of this last one being a woman is seven to one since there are only eight journals to read through.
I drive over to Scott's house for a meeting. Stiles and him have come up with a plan to rescue Lydia from Eichen House. They'd talked with Deaton about Dr. Valak's treatment of other patients with supernatural abilities and were shown a pile of photos of each of his experiments' deaths. This was the only proof they needed to come together and think up a plan that was more than likely to fail to save our friend. Before I left the house I'd thrown on a loose, white sweater and ripped jeans with my usual sneakers because I could not be bothered to care about my appearance. Which reminds me of a time when I showed up to school in a red shirt and stained up, grey sweatpants in seventh grade-and it turned out to be picture day.
Pulling into Scott's driveway, it's obvious I'm the last person to be showing up for this "very important meeting" that Stiles will be reminding to me the moment I walk into the house. I sling the strap of my bag over my head and grab the remaining three cups of coffee. When I enter the house, Stiles doesn't disappointment in reminding me how important the meeting is. I roll my eyes as I drop my bag in the single chair and step into the dining room.
"Yes, I know this, Stiles," I say irritably.
"Then, you should've been here ten minutes ago," he says just as irritable as me.
I hold up the cup holder holding three cups of steaming coffee, "I had to get reinforcements." Liam goes to grab one, but I pull it out of his reach. "These are mine. I haven't slept in two and a half days."
"Why haven't you been sleeping?" Kira asks, her face showing concern.
"Well, last night, I found these on my bed," I explain, returning to my bag to fetch the journal inside. I hold it up as I bring it back to the table. "I spent the night reading all but this one."
"Is that your family's journal? Theo returned it to you?" Scott can't help but ask, taking the journal from my hands.
"Yeah, he left a note saying, 'sorry for the inconvenience. you don't have to rip my throat out'," I use my fingers to quote what was said, "and a bunch of other nonsense that I, uh, won't be sharing." I cough awkwardly and they all seemed to understand what I was implying.
"This starts off in 1761," Malia states after skimming over the page from over Scott's shoulder.
"Yeah, I'm hoping it'll tell me everything I need to know about what I'm evolving into. Maybe even a manual on how to speed up the process." Stiles shoots me an incredulous look. "One can hope, Stilinski."
"Alright, let's get back to the more pressing matters here, okay? Lydia," Stiles states. I nod and take back my journal. "There's four steps. We get into Eichen, we get into the Closed Unit, we get Lydia, get out." Stiles' ability to get serious and get right down to business never ceases to amaze me. His constant talk with the motioning of his hands would normally be distracting, but it only added to the urgency of the situation.
"And we have to do all of this while getting past orderlies, guards, electronic door locks, and a Mountain Ash barrier," Scott adds, making this meeting all the more serious.
Malia, with her overly curious mind, can't help to ask, "You have a plan for all of that?"
Stiles holds up a key card, "I stole this last night off an orderly. But it's useless 'cause they reset the codes each night."
"So why did you take it?" Kira asks next.
"I'm getting to that," Stiles answers, tucking the key card back in his pocket.
"The only way to get Lydia out of Eichen is to make that key card work again," Scott points to the card.
Liam squints, "How are you going to do that?"
"We're getting to that, okay? Just listen," Stiles replies as he turns his laptop around. I begin to bounce on my feet as I start on my third cup of coffee. The caffeine starting to affect my body and mind rendering me restless. "I pulled all the history off the key card. Two weeks ago, there was a brownout and the security system rebooted. During a reboot, all of the key-I'm sorry can you please stop moving?" Stiles grabs hold of my arms to settle me down.
"Sorry, these things have a lot of caffeine," I motion to the cup. Each person gives me a small smile to humor me.
"Okay, back go what I was saying. All of the key cards revert back to a default code. So, if we trigger a reboot..."
"The card goes back to the default code. It works again," Liam finishes.
"How are we going to cause a brownout?" Kira inquires.
"That's your part," Scott jumps in. "You're going to draw power from the main line. But only enough to cause the brownout."
"Not a blackout," Stiles emphasises. "Do that and you send Eichen into lockdown which would be bad. Very, very bad."
"There's an electrical room behind the reception counter," Scott points down at the blue print with the dry erase marker in his hand. "The main power line goes into two breakers that run power to all of Eichen."
Kira starts to panic, "Okay, slight problem. I don't know how to do that."
Scott says calmly, "That's okay. You have time to practice."
"Let's say all this goes perfectly. How does a brownout get us into the Closed Unit of Eichen?" Malia asks cautiously.
"The system takes five minutes to reboot. In the five minutes all the alarms will be turned off, the key card should work," Stiles answers.
"Liam, you and I get Stiles to the gate of the Closed Unit. But after that, Stiles has to go on his own. We can't get past the Mountain Ash barrier. And when we're gone, all anyone's going to think is that there was a reboot of the security system caused by a brownout," Scott explains.
"Uh, any questions?" Stiles looks around the group.
Suddenly, everyone was shooting off questions.
"How do we get into Eichen House in the first place?" was Liam's.
"What's our worst case scenario?" was Malia's.
"What if I can't do it?" was Kira's.
"Where do I fit into all of this?" was mine.
"Okay, admittedly a lot could go wrong," Stiles admits.
Liam nods, "Everything could go wrong."
"Guys," Scott interjects, "if we don't do this, we lose Lydia. She's going to die in there tonight. And she might take a lot of innocent people with her." A solemn silence takes over the room as each person glances at another. We all seem to agree at once that no matter what danger lies in store for us, we were going to risk everything to save our friend.
"But, again, where do I fit in all of this?" I ask again.
"You're going to help Kira and Malia cause the brownout," Stiles tells me. "We don't want to risk you're temper down in the lower levels in case something happens." I nod in understanding which reminds me of what I'd done yesterday.
"Stiles," I say just before he disperses with the rest of the pack, grabbing at his elbow. He waits and Scott gives me a thumbs up before walking away from us. "I want to apologize for snapping at you yesterday. It wasn't fair to you since you ended up being right and I'm sorry. The last few weeks haven't exactly been all that great for any of us, and I just happen to take my frustrations with the world out on you."
"Luna, it's fine. I know you didn't mean to. None of this has been easy, especially for you. I get it."
"Yeah, but what I did was unnecessary and it wasn't right for someone to talk to another person that way. Even with the extra circumstances thrown on me. I-"
"Don't. I understand. You don't have to apologize for it."
"But-"
"Luna, st-"
"Can you just accept my stupid apology so I don't feel so bad when I look at you now?" I interrupt, clearly agitated. A lopsided smile crosses his face and he pulls me into a tight hug.
"Okay, Luna, since you want it so badly. I forgive you." I squeeze harder than I should causing a few satisfying cracks in his back. He grunts at the short lived pain as I push him away.
"Thanks, dude," I say as I step away. I hear him laugh once I grab my bag and walk out of the house.
"You're welcome!" He calls after me.

Second period is my free period and what I had planned to do during my free period was read through the remaining journal, but I'd ended up running into Stiles and Scott in the library. Stiles had been at the sheriff station convincing Jordan Parrish to help us get into Eichen and Scott had Liam help him get body bags from his mother which would be the way they and Stiles get inside, with the help of Parrish. I follow the two boys down a flight of steps.
"My Dad's got the lab working on the shoe prints," Stiles starts. "But, uh, we're both kind of mystified about how giant clawed werewolf feet turn back into a pair of sneakers."
"What shoe prints?" I ask since I'm pretty mystified about this new information.
"The shoe prints from the hospital," Stiles answers looking back at me. When I give him a dumbfounded look, Scott gasps as if he figured out what he'd forgotten.
"I knew I was forgetting to tell someone something!" The way he'd said it made me pat him on the shoulder and pout at how cute he was. Quickly, he explained the fight between the Beast and the Hellhound at the hospital and how the Beast got away on a pair of bloody sneakers.
"Seems impossible to me," I say.
Stiles agrees, "Right?"
"Argent said it would be unlike anything we've ever seen before," Scott clarifies.
"Did he say it was going to defy the laws of physics?" Stiles asks, making the entire thing sound crazy.
"That's not even what's impossible to me. I defy the laws of physic every time I turn into a wolf," a sarcastic snort from Stiles interrupts my reply. "But the fact this person still had clothes on after the transformation is bizarre to me."
Scott and Stiles ponder this for a moment, but are cut short when Scott notices Theo leaning against a shelf of books. A inhumane sound erupts from the back of my throat and both Stiles and Scott have to hold me back from launching at him. He had been skimming through a book slowly before we stopped.
"What are you doing here?" Scott questions.
Theo steps forward and glances between Scott and Stiles, "I still need to graduate." His eyes meet mine. "I gave you your books back. You don't have to rip my throat out."
"I want to do that regardless," I declare with malice, nearly baring my teeth at him.
"No. No. What you need is to be beaten severely with a lead pipe wrapped in barbed wire..." I nod in agreement and raise my fist for a fist bump. Stiles doesn't hesitate to give one to me.
"Okay, I admit that mistakes were made," Theo acknowledges innocently.
"Murders," Stiles clarifies. "Some murders were made."
"You know how the Soviets helped us win World War II?" I roll my eyes and scoff as Theo brushes off the statement, turning another page in his book
"They knew how to make it through a Russian winter," I answer as if it's obvious.
"Exactly," he agrees in a mocking tone.
"That it? Okay. Thank you, Theo. Very informative," Stiles says sarcastically, turning to push Scott and I toward the library doors.
Theo stops him, "If you're planning to break Lydia out of Eichen House, you still need to get past the Mountain Ash." The way his head cocks to the side in a bragging way makes me want to take a swing. "We can make it through. You can't, Scott." The hands on both of my elbows, belonging to both boys standing beside me, keep me from actually taking a swing.
"What do you really want?" Scott accuses.
"I know you saw the fresco. Two seriously pissed off creatures, the Hellhound and the Beast, fighting over a pile of dead bodies. I don't want to be one of the bodies, it's that simple. I can get you to Lydia. Or we can see who gets to her first." He closes the book he's reading and places it back on the shelf. When he walks away, I can't stop the words from leaving my mouth.
"You know, if you're dumbass didn't stick your claws in her neck and dug around her mind, she wouldn't even be in that hell hole!" He only stops for a moment before he walks completely out of the room.
"There's no way he knows what Valack's doing. Why's he so interested in her?" Stiles questions.
"He probably thinks what we're all thinking. That Lydia's got something bigger to do with this. That maybe she's the only one who can actually save us," Scott realizes.
"And," I start, "we all know Theo, he just wants to save his own ass."
After school, I found myself in Scott's living room for the second time that day. We were all getting ready for operation Rescue Lydia from Evil Doctors and Theo. Malia and Kira were about to tell us about their practices in the lab with lightbulbs.
"She took out the whole school?" Scott asks.
Malia corrects, "She took out the whole grid."
Kira shakes her head, "Look, I failed every single practice try. This isn't going to work."
"How far can we get without the brownout?" Liam asks, hoping there's another solution besides Kira.
But Stiles has a sarcastic answer, "The front door."
"We're going," Scott states confidently.
Kira can't believe it, "Scott, we went through boxes of lightbulbs."
Scott steps halfway towards her, "It doesn't matter. You can do this."
Everyone looks around worriedly at each other as the couple continues with their spiel.
"The key card won't work without a reboot. And there's no reboot without a brownout."
Scott walks the rest of the way, "I know you can do this. Anyone here think she can't?" He looks around at everyone. We all stutter and nervously start to shuffle before Liam speaks.
"Not me."
"I was the one who put you in the plan."
My turn, "You can do it because Malia and I will be there helping the whole time."
Malia stares at everyone else as everyone stares at her to speak.
"What?"
Stiles whispers, "'I believe in you too, Kira.'"
"I'm the one who's going to be locked in an electrical room with her." We each give her a look. She sighs and turns to Kira, "You can do it." Scott smiles at her attempt.
Kira shakes her head, "You guys are all crazy. We're gonna die."
I cheer, "Then, lead us to our death, Miss Yukimura."
