Things Not Seen Conversation
In a cafe chair, there was me, sporting my visible body, waiting for a cup of coffee to
arrive as part of my new morning routine before school. My parents sorted my absences with my high school's administration, so I can have an education without any restrictions. I'm glad I got rid of my invisibility last year. Just as the barista placed my drink on a counter, a brunette girl with a cane walked in: it was Alicia. I grabbed the coffee and went up to her and greeted her.
"Hey, Alicia," I said, waving, as if she could see.
"Bobby. Hi," she replied with a smile.
"So, what are you doing here?" she asked.
"I come here to get breakfast," I told her. "What about you?"
"This cafe is disability-friendly," Alicia remarked, "and I go here sometimes to get my school work done."
"Cool," because I didn't know what else to say.
I stood there awkwardly until I said, "Sit at my spot."
"Whatever you say," Alicia said sarcastically.
We sat at the two stools, where I put my stuff on, and we started talking.
"So, how's life?" Alicia asked, putting her cane to the side.
"Fine, I guess," I replied. "But I can tell that my mom is still mad at me for not being serious about my... well, I guess you can call it invisibility."
"Really? Why?" Alicia had a confused expression on her face.
"I don't know. To tell the truth, she didn't seem convinced that I took my situation
seriously, and I think her intuition was right. I didn't see it as a big deal until Officer Pagett came to my house."
"Oh. Well, okay," Alicia was understanding.
"Another thing that's bothering me," I began, "is that everyone at school thinks I'm weird
for missing so many days. My friends are just not talking to me much. One kid keeps asking me questions, but I don't answer them. It's just been hard."
Alicia gave me a sympathetic glance. "I understand completely. Like I said, everyone, besides Nancy left me after I got blind. You'll get through."
I smiled. "Thanks, Alicia." I checked my watch. Uh oh. I would be late if I didn't go to school in the next twenty seconds. "Sorry, I have to go," I said to her.
"See you later, Bobby," Alicia replied.
"Bye," I told her before I grabbed hold of my things and walked to my school.
