Chapter 03
Sirius took aback at first, but finally melted into the kiss and closed his eyes, wrapping his arms around her and bringing her closer to him.
He never wanted to let go now that he finally had her in his arms after years of yearning. It felt surreal to him that she was alive and in his embrace. So he tried to hold her closer, even though it was impossible, afraid that she would disappear and he would wake up and realize that this was all a dream.
Jenna clenched onto the front of his clothes, holding herself up because she knew her knees would soon give in. She let her tears finally roll down her cheeks as she kissed him, her whole body trembling and shaking in shock and disbelief.
They finally pulled away after what felt like an eternity, pressing their foreheads against one another. With their eyes closed, they breathed in and out, trying to devour the moment.
"Why are you so wet?" Sirius finally said, breaking the silence.
Jenna snorted in laughter, pulling slightly away and giving him a look.
Sirius rolled his eyes with a grin, "Ugh, you know what I mean," he said, pointing at her soaked hair and clothes.
"It's pouring rain outside, in case it has escaped your notice," she replied cheekily.
"But why didn't you take an umbrella with you? You might get sick."
"I didn't have time to pack anything," said Jenna, shrugging. "I just took my wand and got here."
"What?" Sirius frowned in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Jenna sighed, running a hand through her hair. "We have a lot to talk about, Sirius. Both of us. I deserve to know the truth. All of it."
"O-okay." He nodded hesitantly, gesturing at the dusty bed. "Why don't you sit down?"
Jenna nodded, sitting down at the edge of the bed and Sirius joined her.
"All right..." he started. "What do you want to know?"
"Everything," said Jenna miserably. "Why did you switch the Secret Keeper to Peter? How is it that everyone thought you killed him and those twelve Muggles? How is Pettigrew still alive yet no one knows about it? How did you escape and why now, after all these years?"
"The day that we were going to put the charm on their house so Voldemort couldn't find Lily and James, I knew that Voldemort was onto me. He would've suspected that I was the Secret Keeper, so I had to switch it last minute."
"But why Pettigrew?" Jenna asked angrily, her face heating up in fury at the mention of the name.
"Because at the time, I thought that Remus was the spy," Sirius explained, a hint of deep regret in his voice. "So we chose Pettigrew. He went straight up to Voldemort and gave him their hiding place."
Jenna looked away, her eyes filling up with tears at the thought, but she shook her head, trying to forget that night.
"The Muggles... what about them?" she asked, swallowing.
"It was Pettigrew," said Sirius, grimacing once again. "He yelled at me in front of everyone in the street to show him mercy, he then cut his own finger, and blasted the whole street with a curse, killing all the Muggles nearby. He then transformed himself into a rat and ran away!"
"This all could've been avoided if you had told Dumbledore and me about the switching," said Jenna and Sirius merely nodded.
"Actually it would've been easier if I had just murdered him before giving the idea of making him the Secret Keeper," he said, burying his face in his hands. "This is all my fault... Lily and James are dead because of me. I killed them."
"D-don't say that, Sirius," Jenna muttered, moving closer to him on the bed and holding his weak thin hands in hers, lowering them. "It wasn't your fault. You didn't know he was the traitor. None of us did."
"Well, I should have!" he retorted. "Of course he was going to rat us out! His Animagus form was literally a filthy rat!"
"No one could've know," said Jenna, softly caressing his hands with her fingers. "So, tell me... why did you escape after all these years? Why not earlier?"
"Because I had no reason to!" he said. "I thought I would never get my hands on Pettigrew again, so there was no way I could get my revenge. And part of me knew that I deserved being there..."
"You could've returned for me," Jenna whispered, looking down.
"They told me you were dead!" Sirius shouted, losing his temper. "Everyone thought so, only they couldn't find your body... how is this possible, Jenna? How are you alive?"
He asked, raising his hand and running its fingertips against her rosy cheek as he looked upon her.
"It all started from Dumbledore's request," she answered, still avoiding his eyes. "He sent me away to get him information from the Death Eaters. But that night when they brought James in... I started fighting against the Death Eaters to help James, transforming back to my original self."
"But why did you transform? You could've easily escaped without them realizing that it's you."
"Because I lost focus," she explained. "Besides, I needed my full strength to fight them. And taking a form of someone else takes a lot of energy."
"So how does that lead to everyone thinking that you were dead?"
"I'm getting there," Jenna smiled, shaking her head at the impatient man. "When the Aurors arrived, along with a few of the Order's members, they saw my real face, but they also saw me in the Death Eater robes. So I took advantage of the diversion and took James's hand and Disapparated before they could attack me."
"So we were right back then," he said. "Everyone on our side started to believe that you were with them. And all the Death Eaters figured that you were a spy."
"Exactly." Jenna nodded. "That means that after Voldemort's downfall that night, both sides thought that I was a traitor. Dumbledore knew that they were going to come after me, so he prepared everything for me so I could escape. I think he was the one who made everyone believe that I was dead, so none of them would come after me."
"Then where were you all these years?"
"In America," she answered. "Carolina, to be exact. Dumbledore made me a Portkey and sent me there. He had a safe-house there ready in a Muggle town, just in case. And so I went on, not looking behind me. I put aside my wand, promising myself that I would never lay a hand on it ever again. And I had lost all my Metamorphic abilities, after that night..."
"I see..." said Sirius in a hollow voice, looking down.
"But how did you manage to do it?" Jenna asked once more. "No one's ever been able to escape Azkaban."
"I transformed into a dog," he explained. "I was thin enough to pass the bars. The Dementors can only sense human emotions. They can't even see. So I passed them easily and swam all the way to the shore."
Jenna sighed, closing her eyes for a moment longer to process all this, before she said, "I just kept wondering all these years, that what would've happened if I hadn't worked for Dumbledore, and what would've happened if you hadn't been sent to Azkaban."
"Honestly, I've been thinking about it too," said Sirius, smiling weakly. "When I got to this house, I kept thinking that if you were alive, and I hadn't gone for Pettigrew twelve years ago, maybe we could've come and lived here. And we would've brought Harry here to live with us. And we could've taught him how to play Quidditch —"
"Hang on, old man," Jenna cut him off, chuckling. "If Lily, James, and Harry were alive, Harry wouldn't have to come live with us, as much as I would've liked that."
"What do you mean, if Harry was alive?"
"I — I mean that if they are were all here —"
"No, Jenna, you don't understand what I'm saying," Sirius shook his hands at her, turning on his seat to face her completely. "You keep talking as if Harry's dead."
"Well, he is. He died that night, along with Lily and James."
Sirius's face fell at those words, staring at her with widened eyes before he shook his head lightly and finally said,
"Harry's not dead, Jenna. He's alive."
