Crowns and a Coronation
This is going to be a very exciting event!
I stood in a pew, marvelling at the splendor of Westminster Abbey while waiting for the coronation to start. All of the other ambassadors were standing near me, all of them also waiting expectantly. The foreign delegations were not there, as the coronation had actually been postponed.
It had meant to be in June earlier this year, but Edward, the King-to-be, had an abscess that needed surgery right away. It's August, but as the foreign delegations have left, us ambassadors are here now representing our countries. I hope I don't embarrass myself and bring shame to France!
The Spanish ambassador, who was sitting next to me, turned to me and we started having a conversation in broken English, and this continued until a fanfare started playing.
"All rise, for the arrival of Edward and Alexandra!" someone called out.
We stood up, and looked around for the royals. The priest was standing at the front, waiting for Edward and Alexandra to come to the front. They soon came into view, and everyone gave a collective gasp.
They both looked stunning. Edward was wearing a scarlet waistcoat and black boots that reached his knees. Alexandra of was clad in a beautiful dress with a blue sash, and both of them wore red cloaks around their shoulders. They slowly approached the front of the abbey, probably feeling nervous. I would be in their situation!
Their children followed behind them in similar attire, holding their cloaks up so they didn't stumble at such an important event. We didn't need any more surgeries to happen. Some were carrying a golden banner, waving it proudly in the air.
The royals stopped at the front of the abbey, in front of the priest, both looking a little scared. The priest welcomed everyone to the coronation, and then read a few verses from the Bible. We sang a hymn, and then Edward took the orb and sceptre, and the crown was placed on his head. Alexandra was next, and once the crown was placed on her head, we all clapped.
The ceremony didn't seem long, and it wasn't. Later that night, there was dancing in the palace. People were waltzing all over the floor, and everyone seemed very happy and excited. I didn't dance, so I stood talking to the German ambassador about the ceremony in poor English.
We talked about the abbey, and how majestic it looked, with banners and flags all over the place, and how beautiful the clothes were.
"They looked very fine, didn't they?" he said. I agreed, and then we watched everyone dancing, happy and excited after today's events. Even after I return to France, I don't think I'll forget this historical moment for a very long time, and I think nobody will. It has certainly been a day to remember.
