Chapter 10 - The Guy With Icy Blue Eyes
Dawn's POV
I was stunned to say the least. I didn't know if it was the fact that I was currently in front of one of the most powerful people in Gainsville, or because his features were so stunning, but I was mesmerized by him, almost drawn to him.
He had his hands laced with each other and his pointer fingers rested on the tip his mouth. He was wearing a midnight blue shirt and a fitted leather jacket that made him definitely look like a leader.
I knew I should of said something, but I just stood there with my eyes wide looking like a fool.
I was silently panicking inside trying to figure out what to do, when suddenly the room erupted in deep laughter.
"Uh....." I managed to get out.
I looked at the man in front of me, and then at Jake, and they were both laughing quite hard.
"There's no need to be scared Dawn," said the man sitting the the black leather chair between laughs.
"Um...." I was stunned in a different way this time. I still didn't know how to reply. All the masculine laughter in the room wasn't helping much either.
Eventually the laughter subsided in the room and Jake went over and stood next to the edge of the desk facing me with a small smile.
"Dawn, meet Kaiden Black. The leader of The Midnight Mafia." introduced Jake.
Kaiden stared at me, and the cold look in his eyes were giving me the chills. "I am very well capable of introducing myself Jake." he said coldly with a smirk on his face.
Kaiden held out his hand towards me. "It's a pleasure to meet you Dawn. I've been keeping an eye on you, as alarming as that may sound to you," he paused to examine my expression. When I didn't react he continued. "And I'm happy to say I'm impressed with what I've seen."
I stepped forward to shake his hand. When our hands came in contact, I felt tingles go up my arm making me shiver. His hand was rough and I could feel a scar on his palm as my fingers brushed against it. I quickly let go of his hand and smiled while trying to stay focused.
"Thank you. It's nice to meet you too...." I said. I trailed off at the end because I wasn't quite sure what to call him, and I really didn't want to offend this man.
He smirked at my awkwardness. "Kaiden should suffice for the moment."
I nodded. "It's nice to meet you too Kaiden," I said again to finish properly.
Kaiden nodded and turned to Jake. "I knew I saw something I liked about her."
I felt my cheeks heat up and I was glad neither of them seemed to notice.
"I'm interested in seeing what she can do," Jake commented.
That peaked my interest, because the I way Jake said it made it sound like he was a different person than one I've somewhat come to know.
They seemed to be having a silent conversation, and I decided to interrupt. "So..... what now?" I questioned.
They both brought their attention back to me. Jake frowned at me and Kaiden seemed unhappy.
"Please know that interrupting those who are of higher rank that you Miss Duplain, will end in something not pleasurable." Kaiden said icily. I could see his jaw lock in anger. "But since you do not know our ways, I will let this one time slide."
I gulped and got very nervous. It finally hit me that I was actually with a gang now. These people kill and cause mayhem. All without loosing a wink of sleep. They had their set ways and customs that had to be followed by all members.
"You will have to complete two other tests to fully be accepted into The Midnight Mafia," Kaiden explained with a blank expression. "I assigned Karla to show you around and give you more information, once Jake shows you to your temporary dorm."
"Temporary dorm?" I questioned. I started to get nervous about these next two tests, they were bound to get a lot harder than what I originally thought.
"Yes," said Jake as he joined the conversation. "You will stay there with your room mates for the next few weeks. If you pass your tests, you will be moved into a permanent dorm."
I nodded as everything became more clear. I was slowly learning and coming to realize the sheer complexity of this gang. I became really nervous about the next few weeks. Either I completed my tests, or I couldn't join The Midnight Mafia. I would have absolutely nothing then.
Jake got up and started walking over to the door and I was about to follow him, when Kaiden stopped me.
"Jake will lead you down into to dormitory now," Kaiden said with the same deep monotone voice and expression. "Do you have any questions before you go?"
I heard Jake open up the door and I shook my head. "No I do not."
"Good," Kaiden said as he nodded his head. He then started to shift through papers he had on his desk.
What had happened to the laughing man that was here when I first arrived? Kaiden had shut down and turned almost....cold-hearted in a matter of moments.
I shook my head and was about to head through door after Jake when I was stopped.
"Dawn," Kaiden called from behind me in a demanding tone.
I turned around to see him staring at me again, papers paused in mid-shuffle.
"I expect Jake to be treated with as much respect as you would me," he said staring at me with his vibrant blue eyes, his tone serious. "He's my second in command."
My eyes widened as I realized what that meant. I nodded in reply to Kaiden and I walked out into the hallway to meet Jake.
I had a lot to learn if this whole gang thing was going to work out.
