Chapter 18 - Mysterious Men, Who Understands?

Dawn's POV

For the second time in around twenty-four hours I didn't know how to react to the one and only Kaiden Black. I hated to admit it, but I was kind of scared of him.

Not knowing what to do, I looked at Jake and he had a big smirk plastered on his face. So I didn't know what to expect.

" I..." I started to say before I was cut off by a chuckle.

"No need to freak out Dawn, I just Came by to see how you were doing and if your nose was broken or not." Kaiden said with a smirk as he walked over towards Jake and I. To be completely honest it started to make me feel a little special.

"I make sure to come an check on all the trainees when they get hurt," Kaiden said almost reading my thoughts. "To make sure they can continue training."

The special feeling I had deflated to nothingness. I wondered why he had emphasized on all so much? If it was a normal thing then why have to emphasize it?

Glancing at them both I realized that both the leader and his second in command had come to check on me. Kaiden said he had to come check for training purposes, but Jake wasn't included in that since he wasn't my trainer at the moment.

I started to get a weird feeling about the two of them. Something else had to be going on here, I just wasn't quite sure what it was.

Jake smiled at Kaiden, not even a bit aware of the thoughts going on in my head.

"The good news is that it's not broken." He said with Kaiden nodding at him.

Kaiden looked back at me from Jake. "That's great to hear but I have to have it told to me by Sebastian himself. Where is he?"

Looking down at the ground, still not sure about the two of them, I replied. "Sebastian is in his office doing paperwork," I said quietly.

I could feel Kaiden's eyes on me. "Okay then I can wait to talk to him," he said. "Now the more important question is are you okay?"

Nodding I continued to look at the ground. The room was silent for a moment, until Kaiden's voice broke it.

"Jake will you give me a minute here with Dawn? I need to discuss some things with her." Kaiden said surprising me a little.

What could he possibly have to discuss with me?

I heard Jake mumble something before the door opened and then closed shut. The next thing I knew my head was being lifted up by a hand.

My eyes flickered up and met with Kaiden's. He had a very serious look on his face.

"You need to start making eye contact with all your authorities Dawn," Kaiden said lowly. "We all respect each other here."

I didn't know what to say so I just nodded. Kaiden slowly removed his hand from under my chin, and I kept my head up.

Kaiden gave me a small smile and a nod. "Good," he said while crossing his arms over his chest. "Now how is everything going so far Dawn?"

I thought about it for a moment and smiled a little. "Training's good and everyone has pretty much been nice to me," I said while mentally excluding Alyson from the group of nice people. "Not much has happened so far, It's only been my first day of training."

Kaiden raised his brow. "Okay, but how do you feel about it all?"

I was silent for a moment thinking about everything. How did I feel? I had joined a gang for crying out loud. How am I supposed to feel about that?

"I mean I guess that....." I started to explain, but Sebastian's happy voice rang through the air, stopping me before I could finish.

"Alright Dawn!" Sebastian happily said as he entered the room with a smile. "You're all set to leave and get on with your day!"

Kaiden turned to Sebastian, giving him a nod with no emotion.

"Thank you Sebastian," Kaiden said professionally. "You should take a break sometime, you're always running around."

Sebastian snorted and responded with a smirk. "This is a gang Mr. Black, of course I'm going to be running around looking after all the hooligans."

I smiled a little at how weird it sounded to hear "Mr. Black" coming out of Sebastian's mouth. I felt like he would be a little closer to his leader? Being the doctor and all. I figured Sebastian had probably patched him up several times.

Kaiden smirked a little at Sebastian, then turned to me and nodded. "Are you ready to go back down to your dorm Dawn?"

"Yes Sir," I said while hopping off the table, suddenly remembering I had to act different.

"Then let's go, your friends are probably wondering what happened to you." Kaiden said as he started walking towards the door.

Before I walked towards the door after Kaiden, I gave Sebastian a big smile. "Thanks again Sebastian! I don't want to sound rude, but I really hope I don't see you up here again."

Sebastian laughed to that giving me a big smile back. "Likewise Dawn, now get a move on to your friends, I'm sure their bored out of their minds waiting for you."

I smiled and gave him a small wave as I walked over to the door. I followed Kaiden while he lead me out of the room and back into the main waiting area.

I didn't see Jake, so I assumed he had left to go back to doing his job. I'm sure he had a ton of things he needed to do.

Kaiden quickly walked over to the door ahead of me, and swung it open. He held it open with his hand and let me go through into the hallway.

I heard the door shut behind me and I turned left into the hall. I started walking towards to door at the end, not waiting for Kaiden.

"You know Dawn," Kaiden said as he walked faster to catch up with me. "Considering I'm your leader I should be in front of you leading the way."

We stopped walking and he looked at me with a straight face. I didn't know if he was being serious, but then I caught a flicker of amusement in his eyes. I suppressed a smile and did an over-dramatic curtsy type thing as I motion my hands toward the door.

"Then by all means mighty Mr. Black, take the lead," I said jokingly.

He seemed surprised at my action, and I saw something else flicker through his eyes. He quickly walked in front of me though, obviously taking my offer.

Kaiden didn't say anything else as we walked the rest of the way down the hallway to the metal door at the end.

Kaiden opened it up, but walked through it first while barely holding it open long enough so I could get my hand on it as well. I started to get worried with the way he was acting. Did  do something wrong?

I was surprised to see Jake leaning over the edge of the railing and looking down below when Kaiden and I stepped onto the metal platform. He should've been off doing important things.

"Jake," Kaiden's voice cut through the calm of it almost icily. "It's time to get back to work."

Jake turned around and faced us with his eyebrows furrowed, but he nodded at Kaiden. Kaiden went over to stand by him.

"Glad you're nose isn't broken Dawn, you're free to go down and find your friends now. Do you need anything else from us?" Jake said while looking at me before glancing sideways at Kaiden.

I looked at them for a moment and realized that I had a different relationship with Jake and Kaiden than most of the other gang members. The other trainees probably haven't even talked to them, if so probably not more than one time.

"No I'm fine. Thank you for checking in on me," I said while first looking at Jake and then to Kaiden.

Kaiden was definitely acting weird. He was standing stiffly next to Jake and he almost seemed to be getting angry?

Kaiden slightly nodded. "Don't get into any trouble Dawn," He growled before he quickly stalked off towards stairs and started ascending them.

We watched him leave, and Jake seemed confused by Kaiden's sudden mood change as much as I was.  He turned back to me with a worried look on his face.

"Did Sebastian make him upset or something?" Jake asked trying to figure it out.

I shook my head. "He was fine in his office. We were talking in the hall and his mood shifted.." I explained hoping Jake wouldn't blame it on me.

Jake looked down thinking about it before looking back up at me with a small smile. "Don't worry Dawn, I'm sure it has nothing to do with you." he patted my shoulder. "I'll talk to him later about it."

He turned around and walked away from me. I looked around and sighed as I decided to lean on the railing for a bit while thinking about things.

I shook my head when I thought about what Jake had just said. If I was the one talking to him in the hallway when Kaiden's mood shifted, wouldn't it be my fault? Even the way he said it was odd.... He had a different look in his eye, almost as if he figured out that it was my fault, but he wasn't blaming it on me. Shaking my head again I focused my attention on the people walking around below me.

There was something weird going on with those two.

* * * *

I don't know how long I was standing up on that platform, but people were still running about, going here and there. I wondered what everyone was doing. If they all had a particular job that needed to be done. One that I would never even know about.

Sighing, my thoughts wandered to the end of training and what it'd be like to be fully apart of this gang. Even what it'd be like as training got harder before the end.

I shook my head as I decided I had been up here long enough. I slowly walked around the platform and over to the stairs with my feet clanging on the metal. I walked down them, giving people small smiles as I headed down to The Crater. I let myself follow the flow of people into Ground Zero, bumping into someone every once and awhile.

Once I was in Ground Zero, I stepped out of the flow of people and walked to the dorm hallway. I passed a few more people as I walked down the hall to C3.

I stood in front of the foot for a minute wondering if Parker, Lucy and Xavier were all waiting inside, or if they had left to go do something. Realizing that it didn't matter, I opened the door and I was surprised to see something flying at me.

Not even a second later, I had my back down on the cold concrete ground.
