Chapter 3: Scum of the Earth

There were a lot of things Kent has been called in his life. Pervert of course was a popular one. Lazy, definite a top three. What's another one? Oh, apathetic. Then again that's sort of a rare one. Usually people are yelling profanities at him when speaking to him.

Now there was what he thought about himself. Honestly, he thought he was a normal guy. Doing what he wanted. He never understood why everyone got their panties in a bunch because of him. Everyone just needs to screw off and leave him alone. He's just an average, handsome guy!

But, today. He felt the worst he's ever felt. People should call him scum. Because that's what he is.

After being recovered from the nearly destroyed building him and Sunny were charted off to two different ambulances. Kent was currently in the men's side of the clinic at Delinquent Control. He was quickly looked over to ensure all his vitals were good. Usually in this situation he would be swearing at them to buzz off and let him go home. But his thoughts were at the moments in the building.

Kent groaned and leaned forward to put his head in his hands. He gripped his black hair in frustration. His memories kept flashing back to before. One moment she was hitting him, a normal interaction. They were then laughing, something a bit more uncommon, but he would admit those moments were sweet. Then he kissed her, she didn't say no, and let him go all the way. She was sweet and just like he assumed her moans were soft and cute and so, so erotic-

He slammed his head back into the wall behind him. Scum. He's scum of the earth. He wished he could blame it on the alcohol, but that one flask only buzzed him and didn't really get him drunk. Wait, but she was less buzzed than him. It was all her! Saying cute things like 'I want a suburban house', 'I've never had sex'. She's lured him! She tempted him!

Nope, he's definite scum. Just trying to push the blame to her made him feel worst. He's shit, he's shit stuck on the bottom of a cow's foot.

He didn't know though what made him feel worst. That he took advantage of Sunny or that he promised to marry her. Why did he say that? His mind raced for a good reason. It had to be in the moment. They were supposed to die. He just said that because- because-

She made him happy?

He thought back to the question she asked him.

'Did you live happily?'

He had good moments with her. Is that what this is about? Him acting like an impulsive teenager?

"Wow, you almost died, Kent. How did that feel? Did you even care? How was Sunny during this?" Fione suddenly said and appeared next to him in the clinic room.

Kent screamed and jumped back from her sudden appearance. Fione was sitting in her rolling chair in the room with her phone out and eyes looking at him for gossip.

"How the hell did you even come in here with that chair?!" he yelled at her.

"It's easy this chair moves smoothly," she replied while pushing the chair left and right with her legs.

"Listen," he said leaning forward. "I'm obviously in large trauma from almost dying. So, I'm going to need you to get lost."

"You're obviously not," she retorted and began to text something. "Sunny was totally quiet when I went to see her. She's probably in trauma. Kind of weird though why's she that much out of it." She looked up at him expectingly. "Anything happen?"

Oh, here comes the guilt.

He had a sneer on his face as he leaned back with arms folded. "Get out if you're only looking for gossip."

"Kent, I don't know what you're talking about. I actually have a reason!" She pulled out a popper and pulled the string making confetti come out. "Congratulations on being Worst Employee of the Month again!"

***

"Kent! How have you been?" The photographer greeted him. Good ol' Grady. He was the photographer that always came by to take his photo. Him and the old man have made good friends with their monthly encounters.

Kent grunted in response. "Been worse."

"Well, after I'm done with this gentleman lets talk about it over a beer."

Kent looked up and his mood worsened to see who won 'Employee of the Month'. Jackal matched his same not so enthused scowl on his face to see the man. Kent reluctantly sat in a chair hoping for this to go by quickly without Jackal running his mouth.

"I don't want more pictures," he said to the photographer. He stood and brushed his suit pants off. "Being in the same room as this dead weight is ruining my mood." But, he didn't leave. Instead he stood in front of Kent.

Kent sneered at the man. "What? I'll start charging you for wasting my time."

"You almost killed her today," he stated. Eyes obviously wanting to burn holes through Kent's skull.

"She's alive, what are you her mother?"

"I'm her friend."

That bothered Kent. He remembered the way Jackal and Sunny's relationship first was. Her pinning for him and he not giving her the time of day. He tried to remember when they got so friendly with each other. And how friendly they might have gotten.

He always hated Jackal. The hotheaded male came in like storm into Delinquent Control and never gave him a break. He suddenly wanted to hint what happened. He wanted to see how Jackal's face twisted into anger and disbelief. God, that would make his day.

But, it would devastate and probably embarrass Sunny.

He reluctantly kept his mouth shut and let Jackal leave passed him. Not saying anything more.

"Bad blood?" the photographer asked while handing Kent a can of beer.

Kent opened the beer and took a drink before replying, "Just a stupid kid with an ego that needs to be caped down."

Grady was fixing his equipment. "I've seen you irritated, drunk, tired. You look like you've committed a sin."

Kent needed to down this drink before speaking. "You've met my new partner?"

"Yes, very nice girl. Kind of cruel they placed such a bright girl with a grim man like you."

Yes. Very cruel.

"We thought we were going to die today," he started.

Grady passed him another beer. "And?"

"I had a flask. We passed it back and forth." Should he say it? Grady was looking at him waiting for an answer. "I slept with her."

Grady scratched his white beard. "Well, you did think you were going to die. Kind of unethical though, did you start it."

Kent had his head held down and he nodded.

"And you two were drunk correct?"

"Ah," he started. "I was a little more buzzed than she was. Also, she was a virgin."

"Ah," started Grady. "You're a fiend." He sighed. "I can just see it now. Poor Sunny sitting with the panic of oncoming death. And then you come over to her, piss drunk, and falling on top of her!"

"Calm down your imagination! It was consensual! She didn't even stop it!"

Grady laughed. "There's the Kent I know. I just don't see why you're panicking. Sure, you fucked your partner. Just go along like nothing happened, and if she doesn't seemed bother hit it again. Don't be too irritated. It's in the blood of you young people to be impulsive."

"I promised to marry her too! And give her a kid!" he finally cracked.

There was an awkward silence between the two.

"Must be one hell of a woman to be able to reel you in."

Did she? No, this is all a mistake! He has to sort this out with her. Hey? Remember that promise I made about marrying you? A lie. Oh, what are you asking? I called you beautiful when we were making love? Um, a lie?

He could feel his muscles contract at the beating he would get from her.

"This whole situation is shit. I have a bitter taste in my mouth like after you brush your teeth and drink orange juice."

"The orange juice tasted good though, didn't it?" Grady laughed at his own joke.

Kent didn't think it was that funny as he gave the man a blank, pained stare.

"Well, this is obviously a problem you have with yourself," Grady said while walking up to the man and holding up his beer. He knew the type of man Kent was. If he didn't pry the man would eventually talk or keep it in to think about some more. Also, underneath all that attitude and sleaze was a smart man. "Kent, it's okay to be happy."

The two finally took the photos and Kent walked out from the room just more confused. Usually his talks with Grady helped him unwind and get his mind straight. But, now he's just more frustrated with himself. Should he even say anything? Sunny is probably as frustrated as him. Yeah, she won't say anything! Just act like normal and everything will be fine!

But, he'll leave early today. He's not avoiding the situation. Nope! He just wants to go home and get drunk as usual. Definitely not avoiding his problems.

***

He wasn't hiding. Not at all. He loved being in the janitor closet. His office is just way too dirty. Everyone said so, he wanted a change of pace.

It was eleven in the morning the next day. Sunny usually comes in at seven and reviews their paperwork in the broad room space.

Feeling the ghost is clear, he stepped out of the closet.

"Kent?"

Oh, no.

He turned and saw the one person he was not trying to avoid.

Sunny was standing there with a same shocked expression. Her though was probably from him crawling out of a janitor's closet. She then had a frown on her face.

"Did you get drunk and pass out there?"

"I was looking for clorax wipes!" he tried to reason.

Her frown turned to a pout at his lie. And he couldn't deny it was cute. Secretly inside it was fun to annoy her, if she didn't hit him it would be a cute pout on her face. Today, she was also wearing a business skirt and a brown blouse with a white ribbon.

It has to be because of the sex. That's must be why he keeps looking at the skin of her legs.

"Kent, I think we need to talk," Sunny said.

Shit, that's what he was hoping not to talk about. He nervously scratched the back of his head with a laugh.

"Yeah, yeah. Of course, your place or-." Sunny gave him a deadpanned look. "My place works?"

"I just don't want people to hear possibly what we're going to talk about," she said with her head down.

He was really hoping she wanted to 'talk' about something else. But, it was obvious what she was implying.

"Listen, Sunny-"

"Kent!" a shrill and loud voice yelled.

Oh, no. Crazy has arrived.

His vision of Sunny was cut off and instead was replaced with a large set of breasts. He gasped and attempted to pull off the woman who clung onto him.

"R-Rose, get off me!" he gasped.

Rose Scarlet finally gave him space. Kent pried her arms off him. This woman was a past client of him and Sunny's. A few weeks ago he would give his left testicle for a woman like Rose to let him tap it once. A prominent model and actress.

And also a major fucking sociopath!

"Kent, I missed you and how big and strong your arms are," she ran her red nails down his side, "and your arteries."

"H-Hey, Rose," Sunny cut in. She obviously was looking uncomfortable.

Rose turned and Kent took a breath of relief that he wasn't the focus. "Oh, Sunny! How have you been?"

"I've been good, what brings you over to DC?"

"I just had to come and say hi! I'm still so indebted to you two, I actually wanted to take this office out for some drinks tonight! Your mom here right now?" she asked.

Kent zoned out their conversation and stared at the two women. Rose was the current new sex symbol among celebrities. Drop dead gorgeous with dark, auburn hair and pursed red lips. She's currently one of the most popular women right now. Because of some revelations, Kent and Sunny found out how dingy this woman actually was. But while staring at them too, he had his eyes on Sunny instead of Rose.

There has to be something wrong with him. Put a woman like Rose in front of him, and he would of scared them off by now with a potential restraining order.

The two ended their conversation with Rose heading to Becky's office. And Sunny facing him. Sunny was pretty. She was average though standing next to Rose. So, why did he say she was beautiful? He didn't need to.

Kent walked up to her and put his hand on her chest and squeezed. Yup, definitely smaller than Rose.

Sunny's face turned beet red. And then she did something he never expected. She stepped back and squealed.

Kent also jumped back at her reaction with disbelief.

She didn't hit him?!

"What the hell you pervert?!" she yelled while folding her arms over her chest.

"What the hell me?! What the hell you! You usually sock me in the face by now! What's this cute act of screaming and pulling back!"

She glared at him and put her arms down. "Oh, I'm sorry I didn't assault you! Seriously Kent, you can go to hell." She then turned and left him.

Yup, there has to have been a change between them. For the better or for the worse.
