02. Hard Luck
"Guess who is no longer the crazy one," Lydia remarks as we push open the doors to Beacon Hills High, the four of us grimacing at her.
Stiles scoffs. "We aren't crazy."
"I might have almost killed Allison and I this morning, but what he said...we're not crazy," I fade out, remembering how real that image had felt this morning. Hell, I thought I was reliving it again. It felt like I was actually there.
"Sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and loss of remembrance to the present sound totally normal," Lydia says, turning around to stare at the four of us. We all stare at our feet, knowing that she was right.
Scott sighs. "We're just suffering side effects from dying."
"Either way, you guys need to be careful," Allison says, her doe eyes scanning everyone in our little group. "Keep an eye on one another, okay?"
We all nod our heads. I had a terrible feeling in my gut that something worse was bound to happen sometime, so keeping an eye on one another wouldn't be all that bad. I was just worried that I would forget where I was again and see something like what I did this morning and get someone or myself seriously hurt. I wouldn't even know what I was doing.
I look up then from Allison and see Jade walk around the corner, surprising me that she was even here at school. "Uh, I'll be right back guys. See you in class."
They all mumble under their breaths that they'll see me later before I'm walking away from Allison's side to go talk to Jade. It's been awhile since I've seen her last. I mean, the last time I really talked to her was that night she killed Jennifer. She kind of went into hiding after that.
I speed walk before I turn the corner, seeing her standing there at a locker, shoving her new supplies into it. She hasn't changed much over the past few weeks; I mean, her hair was a little bit longer and she had a long look on her face, but that was just Jade. She doesn't notice me at first, but then she shuts her locker door and looks over at me, the look on her face telling me that she wasn't prepared to see me today.
"Hey," I call across the hall as I walk over to her, stopping in front of her locker. "I didn't think you would still go to school here."
"I've got to finish high school one way or another," she says while picking at the chipped black nail polish on her nails.
I noticed her odd behavior, but I wasn't going to say anything about it. "What have you been up to these past few weeks? You kind of disappeared."
She looks up at me, making eye contact. "Just figuring things out. I moved in with Ethan and Aiden a little while ago, but who knows how long that's going to last."
I started to comment on what she just told me, but then her eyes trailed to the floor, and I knew that she wasn't done talking yet. There was something on her mind that she had to say.
"Corey, look, I'm sorry for disappearing like that these past few weeks, which I'm sure you didn't even notice, but I am sorry. I should have been here for you after Jennifer did that to you..." she pauses for a moment, a look of hurt and anger washing across her face before it was gone. "But I had to figure things out. I'm different now...at least, I hope I am."
I wasn't sure how to take what she just said. "I noticed, Jade. You deserved a few weeks away. You went through a lot."
"How are you and Allison?" she asks suddenly, taking me off guard a little.
Something in her tone reminded of how she used to always talk about Caitlin. "We're good actually. I mean, we're still alive." I laugh until I realize that she wasn't laughing.
The bell rings then, ending the awkwardness between the two of us. I couldn't understand what happened to us; we used to be best friends. We used to be able to talk about anything and everything. I know a lot has happened since then, but why was there this huge space between the two of us?
"Better get to class," she sighs before walking down the hall, leaving me standing there alone. Everyone around me heads for their class as I stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to think Something about her worried me; either it was the way she was acting or that she said that she was different now. It scared me almost.
I shake it off though as I turn around to head to first hour, which was only across the hall. My tennis shoes that I had gotten from Allison last year squeak on the tile flooring as I walk into the room, seeing Scott and Stiles sitting there in the middle row. There was an empty desk there beside Stiles, so I sat there before the bell rang again.
"How did that go?" Stiles whispers over to me, referring to Jade.
I sigh, placing my head in my hands. "Swimmingly."
He notices my sarcasm—of course he did. He practically invented the word. "What happened?"
"She just seems off," I say, fading out as I stared at an eraser mark on my desk.
"She's always seemed off," Stiles says, stating the truth. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure she's fine. Just give her some time."
I was the one who needed some time.
"Welcome to World History," I hear a man say in front of the room, causing me to look up and see someone new standing there. "I am Mr. Yukimura, and that back there in the back of the room is my daughter Kira. We moved here three weeks ago, and she still can't seem to make any friends."
I hear a slam in the back of the room just then, causing everyone to look back to see what caused it. When I looked back there, I saw a bundle of black hair on a desk, indicating that the girl had slammed her head down onto her desk. I took it that this must be Kira, and I didn't blame her for slamming her head down after her father making a comment like that.
She looks up just then, and the moment I saw her face, it was like I was plunged into a vision. However, it wasn't like a normal one that I usually got. This one was like a flash forward of her life. Suddenly I saw every school she had ever gone to, every dinner she had with her family, and every friend she ever had. It took my breath away seeing all of that, causing me to gasp.
When I finally came back, I saw Kira staring at me with utter confusion. Stiles was leaning across the aisle and snapping his fingers in my face, asking me if I was okay. I nodded my head slowly then, turning back around awkwardly. She'll be dying to be my friend now.
As Mr. Yukimura continued to talk though, something on my mind was bothering me. I was trying to make sense out of what I just saw, and most of it did make sense, but some of it left me wondering.
Why was there a fox?

There was nothing I loved more than sprawling out on the couch in the living room while watching The Twilight Zone on netflix.
Allison usually was here to watch with me, but she said tonight was a girls night with Lydia, so that's why I was watching it alone tonight. I didn't mind though; it was easier to watch it now without Allison sitting here distracting me. She didn't mean too; it was just hard for me to take my eyes off of her.
The episode that I was watching right now made me laugh by the time I reached the end of it. It was about a guy who loved to read who was the only one left after a nuclear bomb went off. He had been in a bank vault, but when he came out, he found a bunch of books at a library that survived the bomb. He said something about how he could read until the end of time before he bent over to pick up a book, causing his glasses to fall off of his face. I mean, this guy was as blind as a bat, and he just broke his glasses. I never laughed harder in my life, but in all honesty, he had my type of luck.
"What are you watching?" I hear Stiles say then, catching me in my laughing fit.
I look over the couch at him standing there. "The Twilight Zone. This guy literally just broke his glasses and he's the last man left on earth and he can't see."
Stiles stares at me blankly. "I will never understand your humor."
"You don't have to as long as I understand it," I laugh again, turning back to the TV. I back out of the episode as I press on the next one, waiting for it to load. I grab the glass of water I had sitting on the table as well, about to take a sip.
"I have to tell you something," he says then, but I wasn't really paying attention to what he said. By the time he said that, the episode was already starting to play.
I didn't mean to brush it off like I did. "Can it wait until the end of the episode? You should watch this one with me."
Stiles is silent behind me before he says something all of a sudden that really took me off guard. "I kissed Lydia."
I had been drinking my water when he said it, but when he did, I spit it all over the coffee table. I scramble to grab the TV remote then as I pause the episode, flipping my whole body around on the couch to stare at him with wide eyes.
"You did what?" I practically scream.
Stiles jitters then. "I mean, she technically kissed me-"
"What? When was this?" I ask, trying to find the right words to say.
He takes a deep breath. "It was the day before Jennifer died; when you went with Deucalion and sacrificed yourself. I had a panic attack and she just...kissed me."
"And you're just now telling me this!" I scream at him, throwing the remote across the room. "God, Stiles. How many times has she been over here? Oh God; were you two making out every time you came in there to pull her away when we were researching about ourselves? Why didn't I know this-"
"Corey, God damn calm down," Stiles says, holding his hands out. "As much as I wish that we were making out, we weren't okay? The kiss happened and that's it. End of story."
End of story? Something like that wasn't the end of the story. "How was it?"
He lowers his hands then, his eyes falling to the floor. I could tell that he was remembering what it was like to kiss her, and just then, I remembered my first kiss with Allison.
"Breathtaking. Kind of funny actually when she was trying to get me to breathe again-"
"And you two haven't talked about it since?" I ask, wondering now since they still talk like friends around the rest of us.
Stiles shakes his head. "No. I mean, I guess it wasn't really a kiss anyways. She was just trying to help me."
"If her lips were on yours, it was a kiss," I grin, slapping his shoulder. "Congrats man."
"She's with Aiden anyways," Stiles fades out, shaking his head. "God, she kissed me when she was dating him. What if he knows? What if he comes after me-"
"You're overthinking," I say, standing up and walking over to the remote that I had thrown. "It's long past now. If he did know, you'd be dead by now."
Stiles scowls at me. "Thanks for the words of encouragement."
"Well at least I'm not lying," I shrug. I was happy for him though, even though it was a few weeks ago when it happened. I mean, Stiles deserved to be happy, and I've always known that Lydia liked him in that way. I just hoped that it would work out someday.
I didn't realize then though that that would be farther away than I had hoped.

Okay I just had to include the stydia kiss in there...forever bitter though that they never did talk about that kiss in the show...smh.
any Twilight Zone fans out there? I always loved watching it with my grandpa as a kid (still like it ngl) but I just had to throw that one in there. If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. It's very deep and likes to play with your mind.
oh, and what are your thoughts on me possibly adding a Jade POV? I've thought about it for awhile now, but I'm not sure if I want to do it or not. I think it would be fun and it would let you guys know more about her, but I also don't want to take away from Corey. I just don't know what I want to do, lmao.
vote and comment pleaseee (:
