04. Shifting Tides

It took a little bit of time to find the twins, who Lydia was still in contact with, and to get them to tell us where Jade was, but we got the information. I'm not sure what convinced them to actually tell us, but something on their faces told me that part of it was because she was my best friend. Well, I guess she used to be.

The twins told us to try the apartment building they were staying at, but she wasn't there. The next place they suggested was the cliff outside of town, which was where we were now. By we I meant Allison and I, but she only came because she insisted. She didn't want me going alone.

When we parked the car, I knew that she had to be here. I just had that type of feeling that she was. My only worry was that she wouldn't do it, or that she didn't know how to do it, but I held onto that little sliver of hope that she would say yes.

I barely got to take in the scenery over the cliff when I turned the corner and saw Jade sitting there on a rock, not bothering to look back at us, even though she knew we were here. "Surprised to see you two here."

"Why here?" I ask as I walk first, Allison trailing behind me. Her hand brushed across mine to hold, but I didn't take it. I would have, but I knew that it would make Jade angry, and we needed her on our side right now. "Why a cliff out in the middle of the woods?"

I was standing to the side of her now, able to see her hazel irises gazing out upon the town that changed us both. "I'm not really sure. It's peaceful up here, I mean. Plus I can think up here."

"This used to be your favorite place," I state, knowing that that was why she was up here. This was the place we were heading to the night I drove off the bridge. This was our spot.

Her eyes turn away then as they look up at me, delicate yet filled with passion. "You remember that?"

"Of course I remember that," I say simply as I sit down next to her on the rock, catching a glimpse out of the corner of my eye that Allison was kind of keeping her distance. She knew why I was handling this like I was, so that's why she was so quiet. "This was where we were going when we..."

"What are you doing here?" she asks then, getting to the point. Her eyes caught Allison for a moment before they turned away, back towards Beacon Hills.

I glance back at Allison. "We're here to ask you for a favor."

"Like what?" she says, her soft tone fading away fast, and I wasn't sure exactly why. "I probably won't be much help anyways."

"You're the only alpha we know that can shift and that we trust," I say, not sure about the last part. I didn't fully trust her like I used to, but she was the closest thing we had to getting help. "There's this girl that hasn't been a girl for eight years now, and we need you to roar."

Jade looks back at me then, her eyes showing something I couldn't see past. "You want me to get her to shift back? You really think that's going to work?"

"It has to," Allison pipes in then, her voice coming out almost at a whisper. Jade heard her though, so that was all that mattered.

She looks back at me. "What about Scott? He's an alpha now."

"He can't shift," I state simply. "Sacrificing ourselves changed him. He's unstable right now."

A breeze blows through her hair then, reminding me of how her hair always smelled like vanilla. "What's her name?"

"Malia Tate," I say, remembering the photo that Stiles had shown me. "Her family had gotten into a car wreck eight years ago and they only found two bodies. It wasn't until earlier this week we figured out that she was a were-coyote."

"Tough life," Jade shrugs, looking back out towards the vast expansion. I wasn't sure what to say after that, so I just stared at her, waiting for an answer. When she finally didn't give me one, I asked her again.

"Will you do it?"

She looks back at me, her eyes showing uncertainty, but her voice said otherwise. "Yes, but only because I want to help you."

Allison shifts positions I notice before I smile faintly at Jade, thankful that she said yes. "Do you know how to roar?"

"Deucalion showed me a little after he had done it to me awhile back," she fades out, almost as if she was hiding a bad memory. "I think I can do it, but who knows if it will work."

"It's worth a shot," I say as I turn and look out towards Beacon Hills, sighing. I wasn't sure if any of this was going to work or if giving it a shot was worth it either, but I still held onto hope.

We had to save Malia, before she gets someone hurt.

Jade, Allison, and I all get out of the car when we reached the Beacon Hills Animal Preserve, since this was where we were meeting up with everyone to get Malia back. We sort of had a plan of which I explained to Jade on the car ride here, but even that plan was a little risky.

Scott looked up the moment he heard our car pull up, and as soon as he saw Jade walk up to the group, he sighed a breath of relief. "Thank you so much for this, Jade."

Jade simply nods, not saying a single word. Allison stands beside me as we all look around at one another, not sure what to do until Lydia spoke up. "Anyone else feeling like we're about to do more harm than good?"

"We're trying to keep a father from killing his own daughter," Scott answers, but Isaac was already speaking before he could barely finish.

"Actually, we're trying to keep a guy from killing a coyote, who is actually his daughter, who we don't know how to change back into his daughter," Isaac finishes, narrowing his eyes the more he spoke.

Jade raises her eyebrow at him as Stiles groans. "Again with the persistent negativity."

"Did you bring it?" Scott says, changing the subject as he looks over at Allison. She nods as she leaves my side and grabs the gun out of the trunk, holding it up with pride. She looked good with a gun, but I personally like her better with a bow.

"That thing isn't going to kill her?" Isaac says, his eyes wide as he stared at the gun. "That thing looks like it could take me down in a single shot."

Jade crosses her arms. "Good thing we aren't shooting you then."

The two exchange a look before something breaks the silence around us. My eyes dart around when I hear two gun shots fire in the distance, causing the rest of us to look around and figure out which direction they came from. The first thing that popped into my mind was that someone shot Malia, but I couldn't think like that. Not yet.

The next thing I know, Scott is hopping onto his dirt bike and taking off down the trail, Stiles starting to run after him while shouting at him to stop. Isaac chases after him as I stood there in confusion, not sure what to do. Everything was happening so fast.

There goes our plan.

"Come on," Allison says as she tugs on my arm, making my feet finally move. I follow after her as she starts to run through the woods after where Scott and Isaac disappeared, the gun bobbing up and down in her arms. I hear a twig snap behind me before I saw Jade show up beside me, running with the two of us.

I skid to a halt when I hear another gun fire, coming from a different direction. Allison stops to listen for a moment before she takes off towards the sound, but Jade grabbed my arm to hold me back before I could chase after her.

"I'm going to follow Scott, okay?" she says, her eyes flashing red for a moment. I nod my head at her before she lets go and runs after the tire tracks, disappearing over the hill in a matter of seconds. I call after Allison as I start to run, worried now that I lost sight of her. I knew that she had a gun, but there was also someone else here with a gun that could just as easily shoot her too.

I faintly see her off in the distance, but I could barely make her out. "Allison, wait!"

She must not have heard me, because she kept on running. My heart kept racing faster and faster in my chest as the leaves crunched beneath my feet, my legs starting to even go numb. I only pushed harder when I heard Isaac's scream pierce the air around me, it motivating me to catch Allison before that was her screaming in my ears.

Suddenly though, I saw her stop in her tracks as well. I finally caught up with her again as she looked back at me, breathing heavily as her hands began to shake. "There she is."

I look up ahead then, seeing Malia standing there with a doll in it's paws. But then I saw Tate standing there with a gun in his hands. "Shoot Tate."

She widens her eyes before taking a deep breath, holding the scope up to her eye. I couldn't do anything but watch her as she took her aim, her finger hovering over the trigger before pulling it. The dart goes flying into the tree next to Tate as Allison lowers the gun, her eyes wide with panic.

I knew what to do, so I grabbed her head in between my hands as I made her look at me in the eyes, sensing the fear behind them. "Allison, you can do this, okay? I believe in you. Just take a deep breath and remember what it's like to shoot a gun. Believe in yourself."

Her eyes were still filled with panic, so I leaned forwards and kissed her before pulling away. It was a light kiss, but it seemed to calm her down some, because when I pulled away, she wasn't shaking anymore and she had her eye pressed to the scope again. My eyes watched closely as she took a deep breath and made her aim, pulling the trigger and hitting Tate right in the shoulder.

I smiled faintly for a moment before I looked back at where Malia was, seeing that she was no longer in sight. Tate falls to the ground as his gun drops beside him, creating a loud thud. Allison lowers the gun as she gasps, out of breath that she had just done that.

"What about Malia?" Allison asks, looking for her as well. I shake my head before grabbing her hand, leading her towards where Malia must have run off to. We had to find her; or at least Jade had to find her.

So, Allison and I ran. We ran as fast as we could, but for some reason, the faster we ran, the farther away it felt like we were getting. It wasn't until I saw a car lying in a ditch that I stopped in my tracks, my arm stopping Allison from running any farther as well. I looked over then and saw Malia running towards the car, but I didn't see Jade anywhere.

Allison lifted her gun to shoot Malia, but then I saw a figure come running out of nowhere. "Wait," I say to Allison as she lowers it, looking up to see Jade come running out in front of Malia.

She somehow gets in-between Malia and the car as Malia kicks her feet and growls, not wanting anything to stand in her way. She still had the doll which confused me, but I guess it didn't really matter anymore. Before long, Jade's eyes were glowing red and she was roaring at the top of her lungs, which caused me to take a step back into Allison.

"Holy shit," I yell over the sound to Allison as I watch Malia take a few steps backwards falling to the ground in a heap. Jade stops roaring then as she stands up, looking closely as the coyote shed its fur and turned into a skin; no, a girl.

My eyes are wide as I watch Malia sit up, her hair a matted mess. She was prettier than I had imagined her being, even for not being human for eight whole years. Her eyes are curious as they stare at her surrounding, since she was seeing it all from a different point of view. She even holds her hand up and flips it back and forth, surprised to not see paws there.

Jade glances back at me, giving me a look that said your welcome. I knew that she could do it, just like how I knew Allison could make that shot. The only thing I didn't know was what to do from here.

"We just turned a coyote into a girl," Allison breathes, a smile forming on her face. She laughs before her head rests on my shoulder, the two of us basking in this little victory before we had to get back to our hectic lives.

We did the impossible.
