19. The Seer and the Banshee

Lydia Martin: the girl with the weight of the world on her shoulders.

Lydia has always been that type of friend that was there for you when you least expected her to be. She had a heart of gold, even after all she's been through. Sure, she hasn't always been like that, but to see her turn out the way she did left me baffled. After all of the death and despair she's been through, she still managed to keep that smile on her face, even when everything was crumbling.

She was the person that would do anything to save her friends. She went from selfish to selfless in a matter of time and certain life changing events; along with changing how people perceived her. At one time, all she cared about what her popularity and being the next Prom queen candidate, but now, she couldn't care less. She focused on her friends and how to help people, rather than to pay attention to the kids that now laughed at her when she walked their way.

Yes, Lydia Martin was something you'd call a miracle; both because she's survived numerous occasions that were pure luck, and her change in character was something no one, not even me, expected. She was a living, breathing, walking miracle.

But I guess soon she'd lose her luck.

Despite everything the strawberry blonde has done for me, like save my life numerous times and ignite hope within me when it was diminishing, it all was a distant memory in my mind. Whatever it was that Stiles did to me, it was like having a new pair of eyes; it was like showing me the truth. What he did to me dug up a darkness inside of me that I didn't know existed, and I wallowed in it.

I enjoyed it.

I felt powerful for a change. I had this confidence that made me feel like I was on top of the world, and I didn't want it to ever go away. Despite knowing what I had to do, I didn't care. I was willing to take away a life if it meant to always feel like this.

"Way to leave me yet again in the middle of the night," I hear Allison say behind me as I stop, taking a second to finally turn around. People continue to chatter around us in the school hall as I stare at her silently for a moment, almost forgetting about her.

I hike my bag up higher on my shoulders. "Yeah, sorry about that. John had called me wondering where I was so I went home. I didn't want to wake you."

"It's okay, Corey," she says with a faint smile, the curls in her hair bouncing slightly on her shoulders. "But next time, just wake me up, okay? I can sacrifice a few minutes of sleep."

My eyes catch Scott walking behind Allison as I watch him, not seeing Lydia anywhere near him. "Deal."

I start to walk around her to go look for the strawberry blonde, but before I could get away, Allison was grabbing my arm, stopping me. "Corey, is there something wrong? You're acting weird."

I look back at her, shaking my head. I just wanted to get away from her. "I'm fine-"

"You did it again," she cuts me off, her eyes narrow. "You did that jaw thing; the thing you only do when you lie."

The spit thickens in my mouth, but she didn't scare me. "Allison, I'm fine. Just let me go."

"Corey-"

I rip my arm away from her then, seeing the look of hurt on her face before I'm walking away, not daring to stick around for another second. I swear, she never learns to shut her mouth. Something deep down inside of me screamed at me to turn around and to apologize, but the other told me to keep walking.

I kept walking.

I didn't find Lydia until between second and third hour.

It was a quick glimpse of her, but it was her alright. I could see her hair from a mile away. My eyes caught her walk into the weight room before I was pushing people to the side, desperate to get there before I lost her. I had no plan on how to approach the deed, but I just knew that I needed to get it done.

When I finally made it to the door and pushed it open, I found Aiden in the corner of the room using a bench press as Lydia stood there with her hip cocked out, talking to him. In the time between the door closing and them not noticing me being there, I realized that they were the only ones in the room. This could not be more perfect.

Suddenly though, the door shuts behind me and the noise causes Lydia to whip her head around. Aiden barely lifts his head to see me walk in before continuing his weight lifting, clearly not caring that I was even in here.

"What are you doing?" Lydia asks me loosely, uncrossing her arms as she starts to walk towards me. I slip my bag off of my shoulders as everything inside of me screamed to kill her, but something held me back.

I bite my tongue, drawing blood before I speak up, my voice wavering. "I-I wanted to talk t-to you."

Aiden glances up. "Got the jitters or something?"

"Shut up Aiden," Lydia rolls her eyes before looking back at me, still making her way over to me. "But are you okay, Corey?"

"I'm fine," I say quickly, spitting it out without stuttering that time. She raises her eyebrow before nodding, licking her lips slowly. Now she was standing right in front of me, a few feet away.

"What do you want to talk to me about?" she asks as my eyes trail to her chest, seeing her heart beating steadily beneath her silver necklace. My palms were sweating.

I gulp. "P-Privately."

She gives me a weird look before biting her lip. "Uh, okay...come on."

I watch her walk around me before walking out of the door, leaving Aiden alone in the room. He barely even notices as he continues to bench press, taking some pressure off of my shoulders. When I turn and exit the room to follow Lydia, everyone was already in class. I didn't even hear the bell ring.

My nails dig into my palms as she crosses her arms, raising an eyebrow, waiting for me to speak. "Is this about Stiles?"

I take a deep breath. "Kind of-"

"Is he out of Eichen yet?" she asks me, hurt and worry in her eyes. "God, please tell me this isn't bad news."

Kill her.

"Not bad news," I breathe, screaming at the voice to shut up in my head. "H-He's okay. He called me last night and let me know how it was in there."

She takes a deep breath, relieved. "At least it's still Stiles. Is this what you wanted to talk to me about though?"

Do it now, Corey.

"No," I breathe, my heart racing so fast in my chest. This should be easy; why was it so hard?

Lydia rests her hand on my arm. "Corey, are you sure you're okay? You're sweating like crazy-"

"I'm sorry," I say finally, cutting her off as I clench my fist, not knowing what to do other than to punch her. So, I do so as she stumbles to the side, gasping from the impact.

She looks up at me with betrayal and confusion. "What the f-"

Her heals click on the tile as I go to hit her again, but she dodges me surprisingly. In that moment of me missing with my swing, she uses her foot to kick me in the gut, causing me to double over. She turns and runs then as I groan, looking up to see her disappear down the hall and into yet another room as I take the pain and chase after her.

When I storm into the room where she went, I find myself standing by the pool; the same place Stiles and Derek had fallen into back when the kanima was after them. Quickly though, I look up and find Lydia bolting to the other side of the room towards the door, but I wasn't going to let her get there.

"Corey what is wrong with you!" she screams at me as I catch up to her, grabbing her arm before throwing her to the ground. She squeals as I stand over her, out of breath. I reach down and grab her by the throat as her eyes bug out, terrified of me.

Never did I ever feel as powerful as I did in that moment.

"I'm sorry Lydia," I spit as I drag her over to the edge of the pool, making my plan up as I went. "The deal was Stiles or you, and Stiles was my choice."

"This is h-him getting to you Corey," she gasps as I use my other hand to grab her hair, turning her to where her head was by the edge of the pool. "He's tricking you-"

"There's no trick to it," I gasp, holding her head up as I kneel down next to her. "You're a threat; you have to go, I'm sorry Lydia. I can't...I can't lose Stiles."

"You won't Corey!" she screams at me, it echoing in the large space. "We're going to find a way to save him-"

"Lies! They're all lies!" I scream back in her face. "That's all you guys have been saying since this problem arose. You don't care what happens to Stiles; you don't even care who gets hurt in the process. All you care about is saving your own tail, and that's why you have to go, Lydia. Only I can help Stiles now. I really am sorry."

"Corey-" she cuts off as I stick her head down into the water, using both of my hands to hold it under. Her hands grab my arms as she tries to throw me off of her, but she wasn't strong enough. Her heals beat against the concrete as well as bubbles from her scream rise in the water.

However, for one split second, she manages to get her head barely above water, and that was when I knew I was going to be screwed. She managed to use whatever oxogen she had left in her lungs to scream, and I mean scream. The scream from a banshee.

I knew the clock was ticking then. I use all of my strength then to push her back underwater, making sure she didn't get another chance to see the surface. A few seconds go by before her body falls still, no longer moving. A small smile stretches across my face in that moment, but it was short lived.

No sooner than after my little victory, two hands were shoving me into the pool. I don't have time to see who pushed me as I fall into the water, the coldness of it hitting me in a giant wave. When my head was under, I hear another body jump in after me before two hands were grabbing me and holding me under as well, almost as if it was instant karma.

I force my eyes to open, looking up and seeing Jade there in the water with me. A different type of rage and betrayal rises within me to see her here, in the place where the two of us died last time. Well, where I died that is. The water.

Images of the car accident flash through my mind, making the oxogen from my lungs slip away faster than I had intended. Jade continues to hold me under as I flail my arms, desperate for air. No matter what move I made, I couldn't get to the surface for just one simple breath.

Finally however, I give up. I don't let the water in; I just stopped trying to hold on. My lungs ached and burned, so I gave up. I let Jade win.

I let the darkness win again.
