Ballet Terms

A:

Allégro - bright, fast, or brisk steps and movement.

Abstract ballet - a ballet without a plot.

Allongé - a position that is stretched or made longer.

Arabesque - a position where the body is supported on one leg, with the other leg extended directly behind the body with a straight knee.

Assemblé - two legs joined together in the air.

Attitude - a position where the dancer is standing on one leg with the other lifted and in a 145-degree angle.

Avant, en - the direction of the execution for a step, specifically moving forward or to the front.

Adagio - slow movement

B:

Balançoire - exercises where dancers repeatedly swing their leg from front to back and tilt their upper body slightly forward or backward, opposite to the direction their leg is moving.

Ballerina - originally meant as the rank of a principal female dancer in a ballet company.

Ballerino - the male version of a ballerina.

Ballet Technique - the set foundation of principles and methods of movement used to perform and learn as a student.

Ballet - a theatrical dance formed by a choreographer who expresses an idea through dances with costumes, lighting, and scenery appropriate to the dance.

Ballet Blanc - any ballet where the dancers wear the traditional white tutus.

Battement Développé - when a dancer moves, from a fifth position, their working foot up to a retiré position and opens with a deliberate motion.

Battement Fondu - when a dancer's supporting leg is slowly bent in fondu with the working foot pointing on the ankle

Battement Jeté, Grand - the idea that the working leg quickly gets to the top of the position as opposed to slowly.

Batterie - all beaten steps or steps with beats as a group.

Battu - any step that is made more difficult by adding a beating of the legs in the middle of the jump or step.

Beats - something added to a jump to make it more difficult

Bras - a term that translates to arms

Ballet Master/Mistress -  a person in a ballet company whose duty is to give a daily company ballet class and rehearse ballets that the dancers will perform.

Balletomane - an avid ballet fan or enthusiast.

Ballon - to bounce

Balloné - a step where the leg is extended to the second or fourth position (front, side or back) at 45 degrees; then the knee is bent and the foot brought to a sur le cou-de-pied position.

Ballotté - a step performed in sequence with a rocking, swinging, movement.

Barre - a horizontal, often wooden or metal, bar used as support.

Bas, en - a term used to indicate a low position of the arms.

Battement - when a dancer either closes their legs in together then opens them back up, or the other way around.

Battement, Grande - a large battement

Battement, Petit - a small battement

Battement Arrondi - a rounded battement. when a dancer's toes move in a semi-circle in the air.

Battement Battu - a beaten battement. placing ones working foot ina sur cou-de-pied position and taping the opposite leg's ankle back to front.

Battement Dégagé - a disengaged battement. a battement tendu done at twice the speed.

Brisé - when a dancer takes off from one or two feet, jumps and beats their legs and ends on one or two feet.

Brisé Volé - when a dancer alternates between front and back in succession, landing on only one leg each time.

Balancé - a step where a dancer moves while alternation balance between their feet.

C:

Cabriole - when a dancer jumps in the air off one leg while the other is thrown upwards, as the bottom leg raises to meet and beat with the top leg, the top leg continues to go higher as the bottom leg returns to the floor.

Cabriole, double - when the beating of a cabriole happens twice before landing.

Cabriole Fermée - the beginning and middle are the same as a standard cabriole except that a cabriole fermée has the working leg close into fifth position.

Cambré - when the body is bent from the waist and stretching backward or sideways with the head following the movement of the upper body and arms.

Cavalier - the male partner of a ballerina.

Cecchetti - a specific ballet method founded by Enrico Cecchetti.

Center, the - the portion of class where the exercises are done away from the barre and in the center of the room.

Chaînés - when a dancer is performing a series of turns on both feet.

Changé - when a dancer's feet changes places.

Changement - a change but as a jump.

Chassé - when one of the dancer's feet is extended forward and the back foot meets up with the front.

Chassé en Tournant - a chassé but while turning in the air.

Choreographer - the person who creates the dances.

Choreography - the actual steps, patterns, and grouping of steps that make up a ballet.

Cinq - five.

Class - a lesson taken by a dancer.

Classical Ballet - the traditional style of ballet

Classical Walking - the way of walking in a ballet to show nobility.

Cloche, en - like a bell. when a dancers leg goes back and forth between front and back positions.

Coda - the finale of a group of dancers.

Compound Step - a step made up of two or more other steps.

Contretemps - when a dancer looks like they're brisé, but opening their body to the other.

Corps - body.

Corps de Ballet - the dancers in a ballet that dance as a group.

Coryphée - leader.

Côté, de - a step to be performed to the side.

Cou-de-pied, sur le - on the neck of the foot.

Coupé - a step where one foot cuts the other foot away, take its place.

Coupé-jeté en tournant - a split jeté with a turn in between.

Coupé-chassé en tournant - a step when the dancer is turning in the air in a coupé position.

Croisé - a position where the legs appear crossed from the audience.

Croix, en - a term used to let a dancer know the step should be done to the front, side, and then back.

Csárdás - the national dance of Hungary.

Cuisse - thighs

D:

Danseur - male dancer.

Dedans, en - inward.

Dégagé - when a dancer moves their leg off the floor from a position with a pointed foot and straight leg to the front, side, or back.

Dehors, en - outward.

Demi - half.

Derriére - back.

Dessous - under.

Dessus - over.

Détourné, demi - half turn aside. when a dancer will do a half turn on both feet while switching the position of the feet as they finish.

Deux - two.

Devant - in front.

Développé - where a dancer's working leg is drawn up to the knee of the supporting leg and extended to an open position.

Divertissement - enjoyable diversion.

E:

Emboîté - fitted together. a type of jeté where the dancer moves and alternates their legs in a bent position, springing from the floor into front attitudes.

Écarté - separated, thrown apart. when a dancer faces their entire body to one of the front corners of their square box.

Échappé - slipping movement, escaping. starting in a closed position, the dancer slides both feet out equally into second or forth position.

Effacé - shaded. when a step or poses appears to have the legs open from the front.

Extension - a dancer's ability to raise and hold a leg extended in the air.

Entrechat - interweaving, braiding. when a dancer jumps into the air and beats their legs by changing the position of their legs and feet to the front or back of each other.

Entrelacé - interlaced. battementing one leg to the front while plieing on the other, then jumping and landing on the first leg while completing a half turn in the air.

Enveloppé - when a dancer starts with their working leg stretched to either the front, back, or side and then the leg is brought into a cou-de-pied or passé, then closed to fifth position.

Épaulment - shouldering. the placement of a dancer's shoulders in relation to the lower half of the body.

Étoile - star. the leading dancer.

F:

Frappé - struck. a step almost always done at the barre as an exercise to improve quick and precise movement of the legs feet.

Fouetté turns - whipped turns. when a dancer does a full turn in passe, followed by a plie on the standing leg while the retiré leg extends to croise front and rond de jambes to the side.

Fouetté - whipped. the quick whipping action of a dancer's leg or body.

Fondu - sinking down. the movement and quality of a dancer when doing a plié on a single leg.

Flic-Flac - a crack of a whip. flicking a foot on the ground the standing leg, then another quick hit of the floor to arrive in a coupe position.

Fish dive - a step where the ballerina is in a retiré position and held low to the ground by a male dancer.

Finger Turns - a step where the girl is turning while being partnered by a male dancer. The only connection being by the fingers or hands.

Finale - the end of a ballet.

Fermé - closed. how the legs are or are ending in a step.

Failli - a step where the dancer seems to degage each leg to the front immediately after the other with a small jump.

Face, en - when a dancer is facing directly toward the audience.

G:

Grande - big, large.

Glissade - glide. a small, traveling jump used to link other steps together.

Gargouillade - rumbling. when a dancer degages one leg to the side, then does a small rond de jambe with that leg while pushing off the floor with the other leg and then doing a rond de jambe with that leg.

H:

Haut, en - high. used to describe a position.

J:

Jeté - throwing, thrown. a type of jump where a dancer extends one leg then jumps off the floor with the other.

Jeté, petit - small throw.

Jeté, grand - big throw.

Jeté battu - beaten throw. a pitit jeté that is beaten with straight legs before landing in cou-de-pied.

Jeté entrelacé - interlaced throw. a step where a dancer throws one leg in the air, jumps and brings the other leg up to meet the first leg, while switching their body position halfway around, then landing in an arabesque.

L:

Leotard - a tight-fitting clothing piece that covers the torso and typically straps around the shoulders.

Line - the outline of a dancer's complete body while performing steps or poses.

M:

Manéges - circular. when a dancer does steps in a circular pattern around the stage.

Mazurka - a polish folk dance featured in many classical ballets as a character dance.

O:

Ouvert - open forward.

P:

Plié - when a dancer is bending at the knees.

Pas - step.

Pas de coure - running step.

Pas de action - dance action.

Pas de basque - basque step.

Pas de bourrée - beating steps.

Pas de chat - cat's step.

Pas de cheval - horse's step.

Pas de deux - dance for two.

Pas de quatre - dance for four.

Pas de trois - dance for three.

Pas de valse - waltz step.

Passé - passed. the movement when a dancer goes through the retiré position.

Penché - leaning. when a dancer is bent forward over one leg with the other in arabesque well above 90 degrees.

Petit, Petite - small.

Pied - foot.

Piqué - pricking.

Piqué tour - pricked turn.

Piqué manege - piqués in a circle.

Pirouette - spin. when a dancer is turning around one leg with the other off the ground and in a position, most commonly in passé.

Pirouette a la seconde - spin with leg to the side.

Promenade - a walk. when a dancer turns around on one leg with the standing leg's heel on the floor, while the other leg is in a position.

Préparation - a movement that prepares a dancer for another step.

Pirouette en dedans - when a piroutte turns inward toward the standing leg.

Pirouette en dehors - a spin, turning outward.

Placement - the specific position a dancer has a body part in.

Pointe Shoes - the shoes ballerinas wear so that they can safely dance on the tips of their toes.

Polonaise - a dance within a classical ballet done in 3/4 time.

Port de Bras - movement of the arms

Q:

Quatriéme - fourth position.

Quatre - four.

R:

Raccourci - shortened.

Ramassé - someone who restages or rehearses a ballet company.

Relevé - raised. when a dancer rises up and stands on their toes.

Relevé lent - slow raising.

Renverse - when a dancer bends their body from the waist, both sideways and backward, with the head following the movement of the body.

Retire - the position in which a ballet dancer raises their thigh en l'air with the knee bent so that the pointed foot is placed either in front, behind, or to the side of the supporting knee.

Retombe - when a dancer falls back again to the original position from where they started.

Reverence, grande - the elaborate curtsy performed by a female dancer after a performance to acknowledge the applause of the audience.

Rivoltade - to turn over. when a male dancer battements one leg in the air and then jumps over it with the other leg.

Rolling in - when there is too much weight on the inside of a dancer's foot.

Romantic ballet - a style of ballet largely produced during the early nineteenth century.

Rond - round or circular movement.

Rond de Bras - circles of the arms.

Rond de Jambe - circular movements of the leg.

Royale - when a dancer jumps in the air and beats their legs once before changing the position of their feet and landing.

S:

Sauté - used to mean the step is performed while jumping.

Seconde, à la - used to indicate that a step should be done with the feet in second position or to the side.

Sur les Pointes - on the points. used to mean a step is done en pointe.

Spotting - the action of a dancer's head while turning.

Soutenu - sustained. when a dancer turns in a sus-sous or fifth position and ends up with the opposite foot in front.

Sus-sous - over-under. when a dancer springs onto releve demi-pointe or pointe, quickly placing the back foot more closely behind the front in fifth position with fully stretched legs.

Soubresaut - when a dancer performs a quick jump from two feet and lands on two feet in fifth position, traveling slightly forward during the jump.

Sissonne - when a dancer jumps from two feet and splits their legs in the air before landing.

Sickling - when a dancer's foot that is incorrectly placed or pointed, causing it to look curved inwards when looking at the front view of the leg.

Saut de Basque - a traveling jump in which the dancer jumps and turns in the air with one leg placed in a retire position.

Saut de Chat - a type of jump.

Supporting Leg - a dancer's leg that is supporting their whole body while the other leg is free to do another step.

T:

Tableau - a large picture on stage formed from an artistic grouping or formation.
