EIGHT- Heartbreak in This City

And that night, Maddow was in disbelief in Jaxon's absence. He laid awake until dawn, unable to sleep. Million questions raced in his mind at once; Did Jaxon ghost me? Is he dead? Those repeated the most in his head. Nonstop.

The whole effect was awful for Maddow and his mind was cloudy, thoughtless after awhile. His heart was aching and he felt numb. Tissues surrounded his slender body.

His weary, almond shaped eyes were teary and had several bags underneath. He didn't bother to wipe them anymore, for being the fault he didn't show. He only had himself to blame.

He was pulled out from his thoughts when his father emerged through the doorway. He reeked with alcohol and held a beer can in his left hand, in the other hand he held what it seemed to be a taco wrapped up. His facial expression was different this time, a grin.

"Do you want this taco?" He asked. He held himself up with his elbow against Maddow's dresser.

He nodded. "Thank you, Dad."

Maddow unwrapped the wrapper and sat it to the side. He stared at the taco for a minute; ground beef at the bottom, in the middle was sour cream and on top was the lettuce, diced tomatoes and shredded cheese. His favorite.

Jaxon favorite. It brought him back to taco Tuesday at school where he witnessed Jaxon shoving five hard tacos into his mouth and mild sauce ran down his mouth.

It was nine in the morning; his eyes were wide open and couldn't fall asleep still. His mind was filled with questions. Am I the blame to cause? Did he get cold feet? Did something happened to him? Did he ghost me?

His phone buzzed with messages from Carter, Ava, and Beatrice. They was worried about him. There were seven messages in the last five minutes.

Ava: Madd where are you? 9:25am
Ava: You better not be laying in a ditch somewhere 9:26am
Beatrice: I had fun last night 9:26am
Ava: Jaxon's isn't here. Are you with him?! 9:27am
Carter: yo buddy 9:26am
Carter: everything ok? 9:29 am
Beatrice: he's a bitch, Maddow. He ghosted you and you are tear up over a dude who don't give a fuck about you. 9:30am

Those were the words he needed to hear. He quickly sent a reply back to them.

Maddow to Ava: I'm at home. No I'm not with him. You haven't heard from him? 9:31am
Maddow to Carter: hey man and yea 9:31am
Maddow to Beatrice: me too :) yeah I suppose 9:32am

Is Jaxon okay? That was the important question now. He pressed on his FaceTime app and clicked on Jaxon's contact. It rang and rang and no answer. It quickly went to currently unavailable. His phone buzzed. It was Ava.

Ava: No. I texted and no answer. 9:40am

He quickly slid on his cheap Ken-Mart shoes and headed out the door and jumped onto his bike. He took off to the west and kept going north. His palms were sweaty against the grip of the handles. He was almost there. So close.

He rode up onto the driveway and it was empty. He jumped off the bike and glanced into the windows. No furniture, no mother or Jaxon in sight.

He's gone.
