CHAPTER SIX: YOUR KILLING US

HIS MOTHER WILL ALWAYS MENTION THAT HE HAS HER EYES. He sat beside his mother as everybody gathered around his father and Rick deciding on what to do. They had agreed not to kill Jim off much to Daryl and Annalisa distaste. The whole group had decided to set out for CDC, as Rick seemed to think that it would be a safe place to go and that there could be a cure there for Jim in hopes that he would get better. Everyone had been packing the multiple cars full of their things, ready to take off onto the road and find the CDC, leaving their camp once and for all, when Shane came up to the group and spoke up loudly, gaining everyone's attention.

"Everybody listen up." He called out. "Those of you with C.B's, we're gonna be on channel forty, let's keep the chatter down, okay? Now you have a problem, don't have a C.B, can't get a signal or anything at all, you're gonna hit your horn one time. That'll stop the caravan." He continued, "Any questions?" No one said anything, but Morales, who stepped forward, ready to announce what he and his family had decided to do, "We're uh... we're not going." He announced to the group. "We have family in Birmingham."

They had discussed it all night, after Rick had suggested they all go to the CDC, and they had finally come to an agreement about going off on their own - they would miss everyone, but it's for the best. "We want to be with our people." His wife nodded in agreement. He looked saddened. He wonders what will happen to him, his family, and his kids.

His mother got up leaving him behind with his uncle, Jack. Jack moves towards him, distress. He looked angry but tired.

"You okay bud?" He asked. Tommy knew Jack meant well he always did. Despite his father most of the time leaving and doing his duties, Jack will fill in and assure him he will discipline to the fullest, he sometimes appreciates but sometimes he doesn't.

"You go on your own, you won't have anyone to watch your backs." Shane reminded him, not liking the idea of the group beginning to split up. "We'll take the chance." Morales sighed, nodding besides his family. "I gotta do what's best for my family." "You sure?" Rick asked, to make sure that Morales knew what he was do

He began to daze off as he began to think of Annalisa. It messes up his mind, those words he said. He didn't like it. He looked up trying to find Annalisa to find her looking straight at him in trace, she noticed he stared right back and turned away, he could feel her blushing. They had definitely begun to experience something unusual.

Within the next ten minutes of ensuring they had everything ready for the journey and they had all of their belongings with them, they all set off in their multiple vehicles and started to drive towards the CDC, all hoping that Rick was going to be right, and there would be safety there. They didn't know what they were going to do if he was wrong.

He admits he didn't like this idea at first when Shane proposed Fort Bennington, he was all for it but somehow Rick convinced him to agree, earning some stares from the group.

After a while of driving down the roads, dodging parked cars left right and centre, the RV had eventually broken down, causing the group to pause with their journey and wait for Shane and T-Dog to come back with something from the gas station, to be able to fix the RV. They couldn't leave it behind, as it was a big importance to the group, so they had to push through and try and fix it with what they had.

MARIE POINT OF VIEW

"Stay here, Tommy. I'm going to find some snacks for us. Go with Carl and Lori," She spoke, softly leaving her son behind. She went through the camp looking for snacks passing Dale, Andrea, and Glenn.

She spotted Glenn holding water bottles and some snacks. "Hey Glenn. Do you mind giving me some water bottles and snacks?"

Glenn turned around and nodded quickly. "Yes, of course. Go ahead." She quickly took some stuff that's until she noticed he had a small sandwich, wrapped in paper.

"Glenn the sandwich?" She asked. Glenn noticed it and smiled widely. "Rick has a bunch of those, he is giving them out." Glenn handed her some snacks and water bottles. She nods, feeling upset that she has to confront Rick, the one person she wanted to avoid. She looked around noticing Rick not far away from her, he stood by the car laying down. She walked forward, taking deep breaths. She stood in front of Rick, brave. "Rick, may you pass me some sandwiches?" She demanded.

Rick looked at her weirdly before quickly passing her some food. She began to walk away only to have her four water bottles fall onto the floor, she gasped when Rick walked up to her taking the stuff.

"Let me carry that." He took it, and took half of what she carried. She couldn't deny she needed help, she actually did.

"So, Marie, how have you been?" Rick casually asked as they walked where she left Tommy. "It's been good." She replied smoothly.

"Good. To hear. And Tommy, how has he been? He changed a lot."

"Been good." She flatly responded continuing to walk. Rick catches up with her before he mentions the words. "He has your eyes. I saw it."

Marie stopped freezing. He was talking about Tommy, her boy, precious boy. Rick would do anything to take him away from him. Anything. He is her son. Her blood. "Don't talk about Tommy, Rick. You have no right to do so."

"Why not?" Rick counted back. Marie didn't know what to say. She felt speechless. They noticed they were a little more than a few feet away from Tommy and Carl, they began to walk a little more.

"He is my son. Not yours." She watched as Rick scoffed. "Ain't that the truth. For as long as I knew he had always been a son to me. He is like my boy." Marie raised his eyebrow, what did he mean with the sentence.

"He is Shane kid. Ain't he? Any kid of Shane is like a son to me." He continued. That's before, Marie couldn't bear it. She wanted to scream at him and tell him that Tommy is his son, their little boy. Rick was the boy she grew to love as a kid, they went through many obstacles and trials together only to be broken off and married to different spouses.

"Your right. He is Shane's son. You're nothing to Tommy so stop acting like you can be." Marie continued to walk till Rick stopped her, refusing her to leave. That's when she widened her eyes. "Can I say something?"

"What? Rick-I need to get back-"

"It won't be long."

Marie stopped and her tracks faced him. "Do you love Shane?" Marie widened her eyes in disbelief, she shook her head. "Of course, I do. I always have."

"Really? After the betrayals?" Marie widened her eyes in disbelief. How did he know? Rick sighed, not wanting to say anything else further. "Who told you?"

"Lori confesses to me she had an affair with Shane. She told me she is sorry that she hurt you. And she wanted me to know before anything else happened." Marie widened her eyes. "When was this?"

"The day I return. I told Lori, I missed her and wanted to be with her but she confessed she had an affair with Shane, I refused to see her anymore but I wonder how it affected you and Tommy."

"It worked perfectly. Mind your goddamn business, Rick." She spoke loudly continuing to walk forward to her son.

She managed to get to her son spreading a smile. "Here you go, hon." She reached out some water bottles and chips. The sandwiches. She panicked looking around. Rick joined them holding out a sandwich. Tommy gladly took it, smiling. "Wow. Thanks, Rick." He began to take a bite causing Marie to roll her eyes. She sat beside him urging Rick to leave only for him to sit down beside them.

"Ain't it nice the three of us. All friends." Rick smirks, taking a look at Marie. Tommy nods continuing to eat the turkey sandwich he received from Rick.

"Yes. When one of us has a family who is waiting for him." She retorted. Rick smirks, "You're right, family. I have one here. Tommy and you, Marie." Marie couldn't believe Rick was flirting with her. After all they were old high school sweethearts. Tommy could notice the tension they were having.

"Rick. Why bother us now?" Marie asked.

"I didn't. You came to me, I'm glad you did. I haven't spoken to you in a long time."

Marie couldn't help to smile, noticing that he spoke the truth. "Same here, Rick Grimes."

Rick laughs as he leans forward to notice Tommy taking out a white key. He launched his hand forward only to get out a similar key. "Where did you get that?"

"Shane gave it to me. He said it's the prize key."

Rick sighs, showing a small smile. "We promise that one day when we have kids of our own, we give it to our sons, so they could pass on for generations. We both have one white key, and we promised to love our sons for decades to come."

Tommy smirks, not clearing his mind. Marie couldn't help to admire Rick at the moment. "Run along, Tommy."

Tommy laughs walking away. Marie slides beside Rick. "You didn't give your white key to your son?" Marie asked referring to Carl.

Rick stared at her for a long time and didn't bother to say anything before mumbling the words. ''I haven't got time.''

Marie knew he held back something, and didn't want to say. "Tommy is a sweet boy and I care for him as he was my own,'' he whispered, causing Marie to nod, she didn't know what to say. "He is Shane's son,' she repeated once more causing Rick's smile to fade.

"Right, Shane son.''

TOMMY POINT OF VIEW

As they pulled into the abandoned city, the engines all cut off as the group looked around at the old war zone. Bodies lying everywhere and empty gun shells on the ground - it was a sight that Tommy had never seen before, and it was haunting. Gathering together, Shane looked around the group, "All right, everybody." He said, holding up his shotgun, "Keep moving. Stay quiet." He ordered, causing the others to nod at him. The entire place looked like it had been bombed, with dead bodies scattered everywhere, walker and normal. Glass shards were scattered around, as well as rubbish and broken down cars that looked like they had exploded.

He began to walk alongside his mother who was behind Shane. He looked around seeing their faces. He knew one thing they were scared of. He didn't blame them, it was a scary moment, it hurt him to see them in pain. "Tommy closer,'' Shane spoke causing him to snap out of his thoughts. He looked to the side to see Carl beside Rick, and Lori, he smiled, continued to walk. He took a peek to see his uncle Jack besides the dixons, trying to protect Annalisa. He frowned seeing his uncle Jack beside Annalisa. He noticed Annalisa taking a look at him, he turned away before their stares last longer than seconds.

Rick was at the front of the group, with Shane closely after. They had both tried to lift the shutters on the front doors before grunting and stopping when they didn't move. It made the group fear that they had made the wrong choice. "Nothing?" he asked in fear,

"There's nobody here." T-Dog called, feeling exposed in the city. "Then why are these shutters down?" Rick asked, as Daryl turned and noticed a few walkers in the yard, heading straight for them after noticing they were alive. He held up his crossbow in preparation for them coming. "Walkers!" Daryl called, as he and Annalisa began to take them down, one by one, shooting arrows in their heads. They made sure not to make too much noise, hence why they weren't using their guns.

They couldn't be stuck in the city this late at night, it was too dangerous. He stood frozen while Shane tried to reason with Tommy to keep moving. He felt weak, it was the moment they were going to die.

That's when he was pushed forward by someone. Anna. "Come on, tiger." She stood by him pushing him furthered down towards his mother and father.

"Rick, this is a dead end." Shane told Rick, moving back towards the shutters with his gun held high. "Where are we gonna go?" Carol asked in worry, clinging onto her daughter.

"She's right, we can't be this close to the city after dark." Lori spoke up, as she kept grip on Carl. "Fort Benning. Rick, it's still an option." Shane pleaded with Rick, as that is where he wanted to go in the first place. He knew he should have thought harder with the decision - he thought that he was the better man for the job of being the leader, and he wanted to prove that. He will prove that. "On what?" Andrea asked. "No food, no fuel, it's one hundred miles." "It's one hundred and twenty five, I checked the map." Glenn cut in, reloading his weapon in case he were to need to use it.

"Forget, Fort Benning, we need answers tonight. Now!" Lori snapped, as Carl started to cry more.

That's when Carl ran up to Tommy, clinging on to him, crying, he was terrified. "It's okay, squirt.'' He spoke with a soothing voice. "We'll think of something." Rick told them, stressing out. Everyone started speaking all at once, telling everyone to move and get out of the area, it was all a big panic. "The camera. It moved." He spoke up, keeping his eyes on what he believed to be a working camera. Shane was pleading to Rick to move.

"I know you're in there!" He shouted at the camera, slamming on the shutters, acting like a crazy person. He kept good grip on Carl,  somebody pulled him back. He turn to the side, to see Lori.

"Lori?" He asked worrying. She held onto him. "Come here, we must get moving,'' she demanded. He held a grip on Carl who was crying for Rick to come back. That's when he witnessed his mother run up to Rick. "Rick, there's no one in there!" His mother pleaded. He noticed how Rick faced her, with watery eyes.

"Marie, you believe me, don't you?" Rick questioned him. "Rick!" His mother yelled. He watched around seeing everybody gazes, including Lori who just started with no emotion, he looked at Shane. His dad's eyes turned dark as he stared, he noticed Shane kept blinking, not believing what he was seeing. "Rick, please!" His mother stood in front of him, pleading with him

"RICK!" Shane yelled. Carl began to cry and ran to his mother leaving him alone, as he stared at his parents shouting at Rick, trying to pull him back.

"You're killing us!" Rick yelled. "Come on, brother." Shane shouted, attempting to pull Rick back. "You're killing us!" Rick shouted once more, with more volume.

"Rick, listen to my voice. Come to me, come back to me,'' his mother spoke, stepping a little closer to Rick, putting her hand on his cheek pulling him away, he saw that it worked. Rick began to give up, walking towards her. He watched around as he saw Shane grinning the sight of it.

They all started to run away from the building and back to their cars, to hopefully survive the night and get away from the city, when suddenly, a loud noise from behind stopped them all, causing them to pause in their footsteps. When they all turned around, a bright white light was illuminating on them, as the doors to the CDC opened
