Chapter 38
Skylar sobbed. She fell back as her emotions flowed unconditionally and when she was about to fall, a pair of soft hands touched her shoulders, helping her. She loved the feeling of the hands and she turned behind to look at him. She saw Ed leaning closer towards her, and looking at him made her cry harder, and Skylar put her arms around his neck and she pressed her cheek to his chest.
"Dad..." Skylar mumbled while she was sobbing and Ed smoothed down her hair. "Dad left me, Eddie. I killed him." she hiccuped and her tears renewed once more. Ed rubbed her shoulders reassuringly.
"You didn't kill him, darling," he said. "It was not you." he added softly, and Skylar released her hand from around his neck.
"What do you mean, Eddie?" she hiccuped, as her bloodshot eyes stared up at him. Ed sighed.
"I will tell you everything, darling." he gently thumbed down the tears that were rooting down the side of Skylar's cheeks. Skylar nodded. She did not have enough strength to fight him anymore.
Automatically, Skylar's eyes darted towards her father's body once more. Looking at it was just enough to bring back her tears. She pressed her hands to her mouth and cried softly. Ed sighed. He himself was feeling his emotions build up inside him, but he was more worried about Skylar. He knew that he had not been a favorite of Henry, ever since he had started to date Skylar, but as Henry had always been a kind person, Ed had felt as though he too would be crying when he had seen the final state of him. But, Ed knew that if he were to cry, that would make Skylar weaker, and for the sake of her, he wanted to be strong.
Ed pushed a strand of Skylar's hair behind her ear and he pulled her towards him once more. Skylar snaked her hands around his body and listened to his heart beat.
"Dad..."
Skylar was not able to look at her father's body. However she had tried to listen to Ed and believe in his reason for saying that it was not her who had killed him, she was not able to do so. She knew that if she was to have a normal life, she would not have brought her father with her to fight the dead woman, and she knew that her powers alone had lured him to the scene and just because of her powers, she had made her father meet such a fate.
"Dad..."
Skylar sobbed harder once more. She had just seen the dagger that was lying beside the woman and just having a look at it was enough to make her prove that it was definitely her who had killed him. Skylar hiccuped. She was starting to choke and she turned her head on Ed's chest and stared at the empty wall that was in front of her. She did not have enough strength to look at her dead father anymore. She felt Ed press his lips tightly to her forehead.
"Cry as much as you want, darling." he said softly. "I will be here with you."
Skylar's lips trembled and her tears were freely flowing down her face once more. She remembered her father just telling the same words to her when she had revealed all of the truths regarding herself. At that moment, Skylar had never even dreamed what would happen to her if she lured her father to danger. She did not even think that there was at least the slightest possibility, but Skylar knew that what was to be done, had been done. She pulled her nose up.
Memories after memories flooded into Skylar's mind. She peeped towards her father's body over Ed's shoulder. She saw his closed eyes and his body lying a few feet beside his head. Suddenly, Skylar felt that she needed to be with her father. She pushed herself off of Ed's body and he looked surprised at her.
"Darling..." he said softly, as he looked down at Skylar, who was trying to stand up straight. He stood up soon, and Skylar lifted her arms up for him to help her. Ed held her hands and pulled her up to her feet. Skylar stumbled but she balanced herself by holding his chest for support and Ed held her hands. He pushed her hair out of her eyes as she looked up at him. Ed saw that she was staring at her father's body and he sighed, shaking his head. She looked like a mess and Ed knew that it would take a very long time for her to overcome her emotions over her father's death. Ed was able to feel what she was going through, and he bit his lip. He knew that it would take a toll on Skylar if she restricted her emotions and he just stroked her hair lovingly.
"Darling..." he mumbled once more and Skylar looked back at him. "I am here for you." he smiled, even though a loose tear rooted down his face. Skylar bit her trembling lips and nodded.
Wordlessly, Skylar turned towards her front once more, and she started to walk towards her father. Ed saw what she was doing and he came a foot behind her as she walked forwards. Skylar bit her lips as she was just a foot away from her father. She felt herself shiver and she pressed her hands to her mouth as her emotions wavered in front of her and she lost her balance. Ed quickly held her shoulders and supported her, as she sat back. She hiccuped and raised her hands towards her father's head. Ed understood what she was about to do, and pushing her hand aside, he went forwards and covering the view from Skylar, he gently lifted up her father's head and placed it above his neck. He shuddered at the feeling but his love for Skylar overcame his fears as he did not want her to move her father's head. Ed looked at his hands. They were drenched with blood and a shiver ran down through his spine. He pulled his blood soaked hands on his jacket and came back towards Skylar. She was peeping over Ed's shoulder trying to see what he was doing, but she was not able to do so. As he turned back towards her, she looked confusedly at him, her tears stopped for a second. Ed just smiled lightly with her and he sat beside her once more. Skylar broke her eyes from Ed, and she looked at the front.
Suddenly, Skylar felt the monster that was up in her heart, squeezing her heart once more. She felt as though the veins in her heart were being pulled in the opposite directions and her heart beat was too loud in her ears. She closed her eyes tight, as tears rooted down her face. She felt the demon hands, once she had been so brave to face, come in front of her once more to haunt her. They were dancing nakedly in front of her, and Skylar shut her eyes as she felt as though the hands were hugging her too tightly which made her harder to breath. She gasped for air and looked around her. Skylar was feeling many emotions run through her mind at once. She did not recognize where she was and she searched around her. She ran to the left, and she ran to the right. But still, where she was feeling as though she was in an empty football field, which was two hundred times larger. She was not able to see an end and wherever she looked, only those demon scabbed hands came up to her mind.
"Dad..." Skylar called to her father suddenly, as she saw him smiling at her from above. She tried to run towards him, but her foot was not supporting her and she thudded loudly to the floor. Skylar looked up at her father from where she was and her eyebrows scrunched up. That was not possible. Her father was not up in the sky and he was not even standing beside her. She knew that he would never let her fight alone and when she had fallen just in front of his eyes, he would not definitely react in this manner. Skylar bit her lips and she shook her head.
Skylar opened her eyes slowly and saw her father's body lying in front of her. Ed was reaching out towards her, and Skylar just pushed his hands away and she jumped towards her father's body.
"DAD!!" Skylar wailed, screaming loudly. She was not able to hide her emotions anymore. Her eyes were feeling as though the skin around it was being peeled off, but Skylar did not care. She felt as though blood was pouring from out of her eyes, but Skylar did not care. She felt her world shatter around her, but still she did not care. The most loving person to her in the whole world had died, and that was all she could think about.
"You left me dad..." Skylar sobbed once more. Her eyes were bloodshot and her face was blotched with tears. "You told me you will never leave me." she shouted, and hiccuped. "You promised me that you will always be with me, no matter what." she pulled her blood soaked sleeve across her nose. "Who will take care of me now, dad?" she demanded, even though it sounded stupid for her own ears. "How will I live without you anymore?" she wailed loudly. "You left me dad, you left me." she sobbed. "You promised me that you will always stay by my side." She cried loudly, and she fell over her father's body. Her cheek was pressed on his chest, and the warmth she had gotten used to, was not there any more. His body was cold and Skylar cried harder as she realized that he was definitely dead and he would not return back to her once more.
*
"Come back dad, come back please..." Skylar cried. "Come back for me please... I am all alone." her voice shook and it broke completely as her father's laughing face came up in her mind's eyes once more. She remembered how lovingly he had called her every single time he had talked to her. She remembered the numerous fights she had had with her father, and she remembered how he had given up in all of those fights, so that she would win and that would make her happy. She remembered how her father had always taken the best care of her. He had always made sure that she had the best in everything, and she sobbed harder as she remembered how he had woken up early in the morning, so that he could prepare her favorite pancakes for her. Skylar knew that it was not the pancake which was her favorite. It was the fact that her father had prepared it for her every single day, which made it the most favorite for her. She realized that no one would wake up early to prepare pancakes for her once more. But she knew that even if someone did prepare them for her, it would not be and taste the same. Only her father had been able to do that for her. She knew that out of all the food he had prepared for her, she had felt more loved than she was ever able to feel, as he had always been with her. Skylar knew that even if the same recipe was followed, it would never be the same for her anymore, as her father was not there with her to share them with her. Tears rooted down her cheeks without an end. Skylar remembered that she would not be able to call him as 'dad' anymore. She remembered that he would not be there for her to call him as 'dad' anymore. Skylar sobbed harder. She knew that every single day she would not be able to look at him anymore. She knew that he would not smooth down her hair and pat her shoulders, whenever she hugged him. Her eyes started to go out of focus and tears blotted her vision once more as she realized that she could not hug him anymore. She will not kiss him goodnight anymore. He would never come back home anymore...
"You left me dad... you left me..." Skylar pulled her nose up and sighed as her eyes blurred. Her tears were still flowing down and she turned her head to the side and touched her father's cheeks. "I love you... dad..." she mumbled and pressed her lips onto his forehead.
"Darling..."
Skylar turned towards Ed, as he gently touched her shoulders. He was not meeting her eyes, and he was looking at a spot beside her ear. She saw that his face was also blotched with tears, but she knew that she was not in a position to soothe him. She knew that he knew that she needed him more.
"Let's leave now, darling." he said in a soft voice and pushed her hair behind her ears once more. "It's taken a long time, and we have to, we have to," he gulped the rest of the words, and Skylar knew what he meant. She shook her head to the sides.
"I can't Eddie, I can't." she said, pulling her nose up. "I have to, I have to," she bit her lips and took a deep breath trying to stop the breaking of her voice. "I can't leave him, Eddie." she said, turning towards him, and tears started to root down her face once more. He sighed and pressed his lips on her forehead.
"I know darling. But we have to do other things." he said. Skylar knew what he meant was that they had to move her father's body and hold a funeral for him. Skylar nodded and she turned her head. Her eyes glanced at the woman she had hated so much and she shook her head once more.
"I have one more important matter to take care of, Eddie." she said, taking a step back and turning towards the woman. Ed looked up at her, confused. He wondered what more she had to do.
"What is it, darling?" he asked softly. Skylar turned towards him. She took a deep breath and pulled her sleeves down along her cheeks. Ed pushed her hands aside and thumbed her cheeks for her. Skylar chuckled but she felt cheated as though she was living contentedly without her father. How can she chuckle when her father was not there with her anymore? Shaking her head to the sides and trying to remove unnecessary thoughts, Skylar looked up at Ed. She glanced towards the woman once more.
"I have to deposit the hearts I had taken out." she said. She bit her bottom lip as she looked up at Ed once more. His eyebrows were raised and he released his breath from out of his mouth.
"Do you have to do it right now, darling?" he asked softly, and Skylar nodded.
"Yes Eddie," she said. "I have to."
Ed sighed and nodded. He knew that he would not be able to change her mind and that it was better if she finished all of the things she had to do on that day itself, because if she did not do that, she would have to spend another day living in unrest. Ed looked up at her.
"Alright darling," he said. "I'll wait here for you." he said and took a step back. Skylar nodded at him, and she turned towards the woman.
Skylar wiped her eyes dry once more, and she took a step back, but she was stopped as she felt Ed holding onto her hand. Ed pulled her closer to him as she turned back and Skylar stopped banging hard on his chest.
"Be careful darling," he mumbled softly, and played with her hair before he pushed them behind her ear. Skylar nodded. "I love you." Ed said and a soft smile lifted up Skylar's lips. She nodded, and lifted her head up, as Ed leaned forwards and Skylar closed her eyes.
Raising her head up and looking one last time at Ed, Skylar turned back and she ran across the hall. She passed the dead woman's body and she went towards the corridor. She knew where she had to go, as she had previously found out about the room, when she had searched the mansion for the dreadful woman. It all felt like an eternity away for Skylar, as she remembered how many things had happened after that. She hurried forwards and she kicked open a door that was far corner to the right. Behind the door, the room was empty and there was a giant ball of moving air. Skylar took a deep breath and she bravely stepped forwards. Skylar neared the air ball, and she felt the pressure loss in the ball. In both of the previous times she had stepped into the ball, it had been out of her concern, but now, for the first time, she was doing it with her own will. Skylar raised her head up and she dived head first into the ball. She had the familiar feeling of falling through a whirlwind and she landed down, thudding loudly to the floor.
Skylar got back to her feet and she stared around her. The pentagon room looked the same and the room was similar in architecture to the place from where she had left. Skylar looked at the pictures on the walls and she remembered what Agatha had said to her, before she had died. Her memory went back towards the forest and she saw it playing in front of her eyes.
*
"You are the first Shadow Fighter, Skylar." she had said. Skylar had looked up.
"I am a what?" she asked. The woman chuckled.
"A Shadow Fighter." she had repeated. She had seen the confusing expression on Skylar's face and she shook her head to the sides. "You are the only one who can restore the world back to how it was, Skylar." she said. Skylar looked up at her.
"What do you mean?" she asked. The woman took a deep breath.
"When our last sister had died, she had known that someday, someone from her own bloodline would be born. She had known that this girl child would be the only one who could put an end to the legacy, and with that all the evil things in the world, all the evil creatures would be lost, because only she had enough powers to do that." she finished. Skylar looked up at her.
"How did she know that?" she asked. The woman chuckled.
"She was the best among all of us, Skylar." she said. "There was a reason why she was born the last. With her birth, all the powers our mother had, was transferred to the new born. But she had not been there to see her grow up." The woman stopped and Skylar felt uncomfortable standing in front of her as she looked as though she was fighting an inner battle. She took a deep breath and continued once more.
"Our youngest sister, Eunice, was the most beautiful. She had harder times stopping herself from troubles than all of us. Her power, which was love, did not make things easier for her. She saw good in everything and that did not make others see the good in her. Everyone she ever talked to, except for us, rejected her. Except for one man." The woman stopped and Skylar saw her eyes turn a darker shade. "That man made Eunice see things differently and he proved to him that it was not bad to have powers and that he loved her no matter what the consequences were. And that made her fall in love with the man." the woman finished. Skylar felt her throat constrict. That was exactly how she had felt about Ed. That was exactly how Ed felt about her. He was the first man whom she had loved, except for her father. Even though she had loved Jacob too, it was more brotherly feelings she had towards him. But with Ed, it had always been different. She had seen a very good friend in him, and even when they were young, Skylar had found herself enjoying time with him rather than with some other boys. So was that why she had the powers?
She looked up at the woman. "What does it have to do with me?" she asked. The woman looked up at her.
"Our sister broke the legacy, Skylar." she said. "And that made the legacy turn the tables and that resulted in killing the person who was the closest to the daughter who had her powers." the woman said, but Skylar's eyebrows scrunched up. She did not understand what she was saying.
"What do you mean?" she asked. The woman bit her lips.
"I meant that," she took a long deep breath and continued. "If a daughter from our sister's bloodline had powers, then a person who was closest to that daughter, whom she loved the most, would be taken away from her." she explained clearly. Skylar nodded slowly.
"But how?" she asked, cocking her head to the side.
*
"Death." the woman shrugged her shoulders as though it was quite obvious, and Skylar felt a chill run down her spine. So that was why her mother was killed. Her grandmother had loved her mother the most and that was the reason why she was killed. Skylar had guessed that something similar to this might have happened, but she had not wished it to be true.
"So am I the only exception?" she asked. The woman nodded slowly.
"Yes Skylar, you are." she said. Skylar bit her lips. "But," the woman had warned and Skylar looked up at her once more. She hated that word. It had always made things harder than it was, and had always changed a situation."The legacy would long only until it had been fulfilled and if you didn't do that soon, the person that you love the most would die at the end." she said and Skylar shuddered. She knew that she had been talking about Ed. It was him whom she had fallen in love with and that was the only possible explanation as to why all the bad things that were happening around her had increased more by a hundred fold, after she had fallen in love with Ed. Skylar looked up. She had to finish whatever that had to be done, and that was the only thing that could make her protect Ed. She took a deep breath and raised her chin up.
"What do I have to do?" she asked. The woman smiled.
"You are halfway there already Skylar." she had said. "What you have to do is, take all the four hearts you had extracted from us, and bring it to the place where you first saw us." she had said, and Skylar looked up confusedly at her.
"Where?" she asked. The woman chuckled.
"I can only help. The rest," she paused. "You have to find out on your own." she said. Skylar nodded.
"Why four hearts?" she asked. "You mean five hearts right?" she asked proudly, as though she was a famous mystery solver. The woman chuckled.
"The Shadow Fighter is the person who had our last sister, Eunice's heart, Skylar." she said, and Skylar' eyes had bulged. Her hands touched her heart.
"Do you mean that I have your sister's heart?" she asked. The woman closed her eyes and nodded. "Yes Skylar, you do."
"Then should I also die?" she asked. The woman shook her head no.
"As long as your heart remains intact, nothing will happen to the world. You yourself have to deposit the rest of the hearts, and as your heart, the last of the Night Shadow's daughters was the purest, there is nothing that will happen to you." she said. Skylar sighed happily.
"Fine, give me your heart then." she had said, looking up at the woman as an evil smirk went up her lips.
"Why don't you take it from me?" she had asked.
*
Skylar shook her head and stared around the empty room once more. She remembered everything that had happened after that and she knew that she had fulfilled the legacy. Skylar chuckled. When she had first heard about the legacy, she had thought that the woman was talking about Ed's death, but soon she had realized that after all, as she had loved her father more than any one in this world, he had been taken away from her, because she had been too late in fulfilling the legacy. Skylar felt her teeth start to chatter and her lips start to tremble once more. But she shook her head, and closed her eyes tight. She knew that now was not the time and place. Skylar took a deep breath and stepped forwards. She raised her chin up bravely.
Skylar remembered what had happened to her when she had come to the building during the last time. She remembered all the Night Shadows she had fought and she sighed as she remembered that the Night Shadows too would be destroyed once Skylar restores the hearts. She had known that the history had been wrong somewhere, and as she had expected, the Night Shadows had originated due to the same ritual as the history had stated, but instead of them dining on devils and demons, they had been as the slaves of the biggest and the only devil there had been, the woman whom she had hated the most, Aurelia.
Skylar shook her head. She knew that it was not the time to go through every memory she had and to remember everything that had happened to her. She shook her head and stepped forwards once more. Skylar took a deep breath and raised her voice.
"Hello Irene," she said loudly. She knew that addressing the woman who had given birth to all the powerful daughters, and whom she had seen in the dark room and had helped her by directing her to the proper path, was the right thing to do. "I am Skylar," she said, raising her head up proudly. "And I am back as you have directed me to do." she continued. "The extracted hearts of your daughters are," Skylar snapped her fingers and the hearts she had vanished earlier at different occassions, appeared in front of her once more. The hearts hovered in front of her, with their transparent glass cases shining in the dim light of the room. "There in front of you." Skylar finished. She did not know what to expect but what she saw was something that she had not even thought about in her dreams.
A giant beam of light fell on Skylar and she had to squint her eyes as she saw the beam of light fall on top of the hearts. The hearts started to rattle inside their cases, as though they had been expecting it to be ripped off their owners body once more. Skylar shivered as she looked in front of her. The rattling hearts were making loud noises and Skylar screamed as she saw the hearts being squeezed by an invisible hand. Green blood poured from out of the hearts and Skylar shivered as she saw all the blood leave the heart and only the transparent skin remain behind. Skylar shuddered. Her heart was beating loud on her chest as though it was also expecting the same fate.
"Thank you, Skylar." a voice that she had heard only once in the darkened room fell into her ears. Skylar's eyebrows scrunched up.
"What about my heart then?" she asked. She felt the light beam waver towards her.
"Your heart is your own, Skylar." the voice replied to her. Skylar scratched her eyebrows.
"But I was told that I have your last daughter's heart." she said. She heard the voice chuckle.
"Your heart is your own Skylar," she said once more. The voice echoed around the closed room. Skylar looked up confused at the clashing theories. "As long as you have the bravery, courage, strength, kindness and power," the woman stopped. "Your heart would be equal to my daughter's heart. Not physically. But emotionally." she finished.
Skylar sighed. For a second she had been afraid that she would see her heart being ripped out of her as well. "That's good." she chuckled, and she heard the woman laugh softly.
"Then where is Eunice's heart?" she asked. The beam of the light intensified.
"She was never hungry for power, Skylar." the voice said once more. "So, she brought her heart here by herself after she had died." she said, and Skylar felt the respect she had towards her last daughter increase by a hundred folds.
"Wow, that's great." she smiled. The voice chuckled and it cleared its throat.
"But you will have to say goodbye to your powers right now, Skylar." the voice said and Skylar sighed. She had been looking forward to doing that for a long time and finally she would be able to do so.
"Gladly..." Skylar said, but her voice broke as she remembered where her powers had brought her. But Skylar shook her head. She was not going to break down once more.
"But after me, there will not be anyone else with powers right?" she asked, just to be sure. The voice chuckled.
"No Skylar, there will not be." she said. "The world would be restored back to normal once more." she smiled and Skylar felt a huge weight lifted off her shoulders.
"That's good to know." she said and raised her chin up. "Take my powers from me then, Irene." she finished and looked around her, wondering whether the woman might come in front of her.
But nothing happened as she had expected. The light beam turned its direction and it fell right in front of Skylar's eyes. She had to scrunch her eyes due to its intense beam. Skylar raised her head up and shook her head to the sides as she closed her eyes and stared at the darkness that was inside her closed eyelids. She waited.
A gentle warmness washed through Skylar's body. She felt herself relax and as the warmth reached down through her body, Skylar felt a calmness that she had never felt wash over her. Her heart felt lightened and except for the void she had had from missing her father, it turned back to normal. The pains on her body left her, and Skylar felt the numerous scars and gashes leave her skin. She smiled. She was turning back to a normal human and she was not the powerful monster anymore. Skylar remained silent as she felt the beam of light wash over her face and she felt a cold warmness gently rip on the back of her skin. Skylar felt the area where her birthmark was turning hot and as soon as it started, it ended once more. Still not opening her eyes, Skylar touched the back of her neck and she was only able to feel the tattoo. Previously, she had been able to touch her birthmark, which was just a millimeter inside her normal skin level, behind her neck, but now it all felt the same now. Skylar smiled happily. Suddenly, but slowly, Skylar felt the floor start to rotate below her feet and Skylar felt herself being raised up. She felt herself go through the whirlwind and she jumped down, as she felt the floor below her feet once more. She felt a change that she had never felt before and Skylar smiled even though the sadness her father had left in her heart remained the same.
She was alright now. She had to be alright...
