four. the tomb

"Come on, you gotta wake up." Lucia aggressively shook Steven's body, Layla tried her best to come up with a plan, the night was growing colder and they were nowhere near their car to get away from this place.

"Lucia, can you help me? Let's see if we can lift him." Layla said, grabbing Steven's body from his arms, the brunette hurried along and stood in front of his legs, grabbing underneath him, they tried at the same time to lift him.

"He's too heavy." Lucia huffed, dropping the body she wasn't used to lifting someone like this. "There's gotta be another way Layla." Interrupted by bright lights behind her, Lucia looked back, both women noticed a vehicle approaching them. "What now?" She asked trying to lift him, bullets hit around them, meeting the sand in an instant. "Roll him over instead Layla." She said after cursing a few times and praying that they didn't die here. The two of them rolled him down the small sand cliff, Steven laid down on his face, Layla and Lucia stopped moving to see if the vehicle would follow.

"Come with me, I've got a plan." Layla said and hurried down towards their car. Lucia was behind her hiding on the side of the vehicle next to Layla. All they could see was a bright light from the car they were using to see better. "We will turn around, you get into the front seats and hide, close the door behind you too." Layla whispered at the brunette, nodding her head she did as told.

Lucia was quick and quiet to do what she had to do, when she was just on the other side of the car, she opened the driver's door, let herself in, and hid between the seat and the steering wheel, she covered her mouth trying to stop the sounds of her heavy breathing.

"I am gonna do something to distract them, Lucia, the moment they leave Marc's body, you run to him and try to wake him up or pull him back to safety, okay?" Layla whispered as the vehicle drove around them, peeking around hoping to catch something off.

"Yeah, totally got it." Lucia nodded her head and mentally prepared herself for this small adventure of running and pulling someone's — extremely heavy — body to safety.

A conversation in another language was heard, indicating to the two women that their attention was now shifted to the body laying in the sand, the body Lucia had to save.

"Okay, I'm moving, count until ten after I got out, and then you make the run of your life." Layla added a new order, Lucia was quick to mentally write it down, she waited patiently as Layla got out of the car, in seconds she saw a red light on the other side, this was the sign, slowly she opened the door, her eyes never leaving her focus from the car approaching the other woman. She waited a moment until Lucia was out of their sight, Layla was already behind her with another flare. "Run, now." She whispered, and did as told, Lucia ran as fast as she could, kneeling beside Steven.

"Steven? Wake up." Lucia whispered shaking his body aggressively. "I am so sorry about this." Taking a deep breath in, the brunette smacked his cheek, right at that moment, a loud explosion was heard behind them.

"What?" Steven gasped loudly for air, looking around and noticing the same scene as Lucia. "We gotta move." He said trying to stand up, with the help of the brunette, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders, making their way to Layla.

"What?" Layla said when she turned around, there was a confused look on Steven's face that made Lucia chuckle.

"That was a good throw, how did you know that would work?" Lucia asked, looking at Layla impressed by her creative thinking.

"I just hoped it worked, that's all. Come on, we gotta go." A loud clap came from the other woman, and the three of them were back in the car, all Layla said was they were gonna try and find out where Harrow's location was, she knew where Ammit was buried, she just hoped she remembered the road correctly.

The three of them changed turns when it came to driving, it was clear their destination was far away, and making Layla do all the work for a long hour never seemed fair, and Lucia didn't care Layla was against it, she knew the brunette needed rest.

When the sun was coming up Lucia took this moment to rest just a bit, her eyes burned from the intense focus of driving, and she feared that falling asleep would occur, she just didn't want it to happen behind the steering wheel.

Blinking a few times to adjust her eyesight to the light change, Lucia noticed how there was still sand around them, no sight of a road anywhere near and that Layla was now the one behind the wheel.

"It's just you, Lucia, me, and the open road." Steven's voice was cheerful, interrupted by the sudden stop of the car, pushing Lucia's body forward.

"We're there already?" She questioned the other woman, whose head shook side to side before saying they were gonna walk now. The intense heat hugged Lucia's body aggressively, the drops of sweat formed around her forehead and traveled down her sides, the sticky sensations around her neck were outraging, but she wasn't someone to groan about it.

The scenarios in front of their eyes were mountains, rocks, and even a few animals that greeted them during their walk, Lucia was now fully aware that none of this was a dream, that she was far away from London, and that this "adventure" had to be dangerous.

"There they are. Let's keep moving." The three of them looked down from a cliff, seeing tents and materials near an entrance. "It looks like they're already inside," Layla added to the clear vision that there was no movement, no sound, but there were vehicles around. "We'll need to find another way to beat them to Ammit." With every step-down, Lucia questioned why was she even here, she could've flown home, she could be cuddling in bed right now, but instead, she was on a suicide mission with a patient and his wife.

This is crazy, I am crazy, no one would believe this. Lucia told herself, clenching her hands into wrists as she walked behind Steven, her eyes set on the sand under her feet, she had worn sneakers to her office that day because now, her heels waited patiently in the car, and the hot sand was burning her skin, only fearing that the flesh would peel off any moment now. Unaware of the sudden stop from the couple Lucia bumped head first into Steven's back, apologizing for that, the brunette followed Layla along the tents, picking supplies for their journey.

"How did you meet Harrow?" Layla asked, pulling stuff around to check under them, looking for stuff.

"Well, he came into my office pretending to be a new patient with another man as his son, he was gonna capture me to get to Steven or Marc, that didn't happen and then he took me as bait, knocking me down, and when I woke up, I was already here, probably drugged or something because this had to be a long flight." Lucia sighed and sat down on a bed, checking inside a backpack for a flashlight or water bottle.

"Patient? Are you a nurse?" Lucia shook her head and said no to her, giving her real job instead. "And who was your patient? Steven or Marc?"

"Steven, but it was Marc who sent him to me, perhaps he didn't want Steven to think he was going completely insane, to make him believe he has a sleeping disorder, which he doesn't have." Picking up a backpack for herself, Lucia threw down a flashlight, a gun, bottles for water, and clots she found that could be used to cover her face or as bandages.

"Are you ready?" Layla asked closing her backpack too as she found stuff too. "Okay, let's go." Layla and Lucia walked out, Layla looked around pointing forward near the entrance of the pyramid. "There's are shot to get down there."

Ropes were hanged and tied from people before them who went down to discover inside and find the tombs, Steven reached them moments later, rushing as he looked amazed at the structure in front of him, he looked like a child at an amusement park for the first time, and if Lucia saw correctly, she was sure Steven had let out a tear or two.

"No, you're coming with us, who knows if the exit is on the other side, and perhaps there's no returning." Layla answered Lucia's words of staying back in case of something. She had no choice now, Layla was securing her tightly with the ropes around her body.

Steven waited beside her, looking at the way Layla tightened the rope around her legs, and Lucia picked up a small smile on his lips, knowing he was next, as he had no clue to tie the ropes as well.

"I have to say, I feel like I've been waiting for this my whole life." Steven spoke out, there was emotion on his face that showed excitement and probably a few nerves as well. "The adventure, I mean." Lucia held back the chuckle when she saw Steven's expression change.

Lucia looked down at the roped around her body and back up at the ones with a hook dangling over the entrance of the pyramid, trying to figure out how to put it on, Lucia stretched her hand out, gripping tightly the rope on the other side.

"You smell like him." The conversation had taken a small turn and Lucia felt like this would probably get too personal, she became a bit invisible now. "I mean, why wouldn't you, right?" Lucia noticed how close Layla had gotten to Steven, but it was him to interrupt what could've happened and make it uncomfortable.

"Marc's trying to protect you from Khonshu." Steven began explaining the reason behind it, and it became louder to Lucia that she didn't have to be there, she could've gone down and waited inside the pyramid, but she had no idea what was waiting inside, and Lucia didn't want to disobey Layla, she found her a bit intimidating.

Looking around Lucia tried to keep her attention away from the conversation, only turning if they ask for her opinion in any type of way. So far, that wasn't the case. She felt uncomfortable standing there, no one even was looking in her direction which made the tension feel more awkward, Lucia let a sigh out of her mouth in hopes they would hear her and move on.

The only moment she turned around to see what was happening was the moment of silence, Lucia didn't know how to react to what her brown eyes were seeing, Steven, holding Layla by her shoulders while his lips kissed her, and it didn't seem like a passionate one either, it looked awkward, they looked awkward, perhaps Steven's first kiss.

Not knowing what to do, she cleared her throat loud enough to be heard by Layla, the brunette gently pulled back, her eyes looking back at the other woman, and grinned at her before turning her attention to Steven.

"I'm gonna go down first." She said turning her back. "Lucia, you watch what I am gonna do." Lucia just agreed and paid attention to Layla's movements. "I will give you the rope back when I am down, got it?" Her attention drifted back to Lucia, the same answer as before, a nod.

Steven looked at her and then back at Layla, and one more time he glanced at her, a smile drawn all over his lips.

"If you are expecting a kiss from me, Steven, don't think about it." She said avoiding his gaze, waiting for the rope to return and meet Lucia's hand.

"Oh, shit." Steven let out, balancing back after punching himself in the face, Lucia turned around looking at his body hitting the sand.

"Are you okay?" Lucia asked worried at the sudden aggression. "Why did you hit yourself?"

"That was Marc, 100 percent Marc, I am okay, go, I'll follow along." Steven answered, touching his nose and cheek, the spot his knuckle touched his skin with force, not wanting to ask anything else Lucia went back to the edge securing the hook on the rope, and taking a small jump, her body in a sitting type of position, and before she hit the ground, her feet came first to stop her body from suddenly hitting first.

With the help of Layla, she took off everything and left it there, her flashlight shining around the place, without noticing she gasped, amazed by the view inside, even if it were sand as well, it was the figures that had been made around.

"This is kinda cool actually." Lucia said, looking around at every single corner and figure, interrupted by the sudden sound of a body thudding behind the two women, Steven falling on his stomach and letting a pain groan out. Both Layla and Lucia helped him stand up, Layla picking this time to also take the ropes off his body.

"Oh, wow. Look at you." Steven said looking at the figure behind Layla, his face shining with joy, amused at everything.

Lucia could only smile from the joy she could see in Steven's face, how excited he had gotten by the fact that he was here, a chuckle at the joke he threw at the idea of the mummies just coming back to life or something like that, Lucia cleared her throat and fixed her posture when her eyes met Layla's, she had to remind herself that even if the person right now was Steven, Marc was there and that Marc is Layla's husband.

"What's this?" Steven asked pointing down at a figure. "Did you do that?" Layla turned around asking what he was talking about.

"Yeah, it's for my father. He would've loved to be here." Layla answered back, the adventure ran through Layla's veins. "So much worse. Archaeologist on a mission." Lucia picked that up, adventurers in a place she didn't belong in or with. Lucia had no knowledge of anything like this, she didn't know about Egyptian history or myths. Layla's father had passed away on an adventure, and from the tone of her voice, Lucia noticed there was still hurt in Layla, all she could do was share a sympathy smile.

Lucia tried her best in avoiding touching stuff, knowing very well about how clumsy she was, she did not want to break something so historical. Lucia could see the way Steven looked at Layla, a part of her was happy for Steven, but the constant reminder that Marc was the original husband, well it also wanted Lucia to just slap Steven's head and tell him.

Lucia followed behind Layla and before Steven, the small section where they entered felt so small, tight, heavy to breathe, perhaps it was the dust around Lucia, but for the first time, she felt like she couldn't breathe. The small gap stretched and they entered a new space, it seemed all glass around them, a turquoise tone.

"It's a maze." Layla said as she flashed around trying to see every entrance around them.

"It's a-maze-ing." Steven joked as his eyes scanned every piece around them. Lucia on the other hand, stared down at the center piece of the space, it seemed like glass and it shared the same tone of turquoise or green-ish color under a big cover of dust.

"What would they be shooting at?" Layla asked Ashe kneeled down at one of the paths, which she shared there were six of them.

"Perhaps that should be a sign of not intruding someone's home? I mean, there might be spirits here, or maybe Harrow's minions wanted the power for themselves?" Lucia asked, tilting her head to the side as she looked at Layla.

Steven stood across from them with his index finger he began tracing lines, Layla followed along standing beside Lucia, both of them watched what the man was doing.

"This whole structure, is a symbol." Lucia recognized it, she didn't know the name of it, but she had seen it before, perhaps in movies or shows, but somewhere.

"That's the eye of Horus." The light shined above it, a reflection above the trip, the eye of Horus. Steven began explaining a little bit about it, Lucia was amazed at the symbol of it, how it was possible for this pyramid to be built in a way to represent something.

"Her final Avatar was a pharaoh." Layla said, exchanging looks with Steven, the two history geeks that Lucia found amusing, and slightly intimidating since her lack of knowledge.

Steven was clever, too clever to figure out how the whole symbol represented some kind of map, six paths, the six senses of the body.

"So, which path are we gonna take to get to the Avatar's tomb?" Lucia asked looking around at the six different choices they had. The three of them turned to look at the one behind Steven and began making their way inside.

The corridor was spacious enough, and dark, Lucia almost slipped twice with bullets that had been left on the ground, she was careful and kept her focus on the pair before her, until they reached a new space, it was dark too, but just specks of lighting shined through the roof, Lucia noticed how a table was in the middle of the room, statues on the walls, and other stuff laying around.

Lucia could've told them to keep on moving, to find a way out, but she couldn't, she saw the excitement on both as they looked around, sharing conversations about the mummies that Lucia had mistaken for statues.

"Oh, my god. Oh, God. Is that fresh blood?" Steven said covering his nose and mouth, Lucia's attention turned to the table, shining her flashlight over it, there were red stains brushed all over it, and as she got closer to it, a faint but strong odor hit her nostrils.

Layla on the other side investigated under it and around it, picking up a small weapon before dropping it and suggesting that they should move on, the three of them made their way towards an open space, their exit, that was until they noticed the dried blood all over the floor, heading towards their freedom of this place.

"I see lots of bones and blood going that way." Steven looked up and around for a moment before speaking again. "So I'm just thinking, like, what if there's maybe another." Stepping back and shining around they noticed something above them, Lucia walked away trying to find some type of door or another passage for them to leave.

"I'll be looking around for another way." Lucia announced, her steps careful as she tried to not knock anything around her causing it to break or create a sound that could give out their location to Harrow.

Steven began talking about what he was seeing and the things he knew of the Egyptian history, stuff that Lucia didn't comprehend but valued of Steven, she just looked up keeping her eyes focus on him, making sure he didn't fell down or something.

"Steven," Layla called out for him a few times. "The exit?" Just like Lucia, they wanted out of this place.

"Yeah, yeah. We can go this way." Steven turned back giving them a thumbs up at both girls down.

A gunshot was heard not too far away from them, followed by a few more, it had to be one of Harrow's minions, and the sounds of it grew closer to where they were.

"Hide, hide." Steven said looking at both girls before hiding, Layla hid behind the tomb, Lucia behind a pillar.

The gunshots stopped being heard but instead the sound that came along was a clicking type of sound. Lucia thought of the clicking of a horse feet, but it couldn't be a horse, why they shoot at a horse, right? Lucia took a peek behind the pillar, a body was being dragged by someone, she couldn't see who it was, but only the attire, old cloths, skin dark as the night, and blood staining after the body of a man. Hiding back Lucia covered her mouth, she didn't want her heavy breathing to give off her hiding spot, it was too loud, she needed to calm down.

"God, I know we haven't talked in a while, but please, please don't let us die." Lucia prayed in her thoughts only to hear metals clanging around and the groaning of the man, squeezing sounds from blood or even flesh being torn apart.

Lucia didn't know what was happening, but she prayed they weren't next.
