Chapter Five: A Momentous Occasion

The entire town of about 45 people gather around the old gate at the edge of town that encloses the three dogs to witness Andy inevitably get mauled by three wild, dangerous dogs. As long as he doesn't die, this is quality entertainment for the town that hasn't been named yet.

Sweat coats everyone’s faces, despite it being later in the day when it should be cooler, but when you live in the desert, it’s like the sun is always out, which is most likely why this phases no one.

The children cheer gibberish that's barely audible, and their parents tell them to stop their nonsense, even though this entire town seems to be nonsense-powered.

Bobby stands sandwiched among the small crowd of people, crossing his arms and scowling at his best friend's stupidity.

An old man with a brown hat that has a large hole at the top of it walks over towards Andy, who is standing a few feet past the gate that encloses the three dogs.

"You ready?!" He shouts at him, Andy giving a comically large nod of confirmation to the man, as he opens the gate after seeing his action.

The three dogs immediately rush out of the small enclosure, clearly glad to be freed from the prison. They bark as spit flies out of their mouths, either because of the meat Andy is holding, or Andy himself.

Noticing that the dogs are actually a lot faster than he expected, Andy does something that can only be described with one word: stupid.

Slowing his pace in comparison to the dogs, he attempts to jump over the three of them, who are all very close together, making it successfully, but injuring his red and sweaty face in the process.

His face slams into the hard ground, the entire crowd cheering as he does so.

It was entertaining, but at what cost?

"What made you think that was a good idea?" Bobby asks as Andy shoves his face into the extremely warm bucket of water that a boy around fifteen gave to him, claiming that it would "cleanse you of the dirt and such".

"I haven't run in a while, it just didn't come to mind that the dogs could have actually hurt me," He answers, putting another bandage over one of many cuts the dogs gave him after he fell to the ground.

"Man, you have more scars than me now!" Bobby complains, taking a drink out of the obviously dirty water from the bucket.

"Why would you drink that?" Andy asks, disgust on his face.

"I was thirsty."
