Tense

"Let's go ___! Why are you still sleeping?" Atsumu complains as you feel weight on your bed.

"Hm?" Your eyes open, peering at him sleepily as he bounces on the bed slightly.

"Wow you look like you didn't sleep at all." He comments with a head tilt, one of his ears flopping.

"My dreams were weird." You yawn, sitting up and rubbing your eyes.

"Hmm. You need a coffee! I'll go make one!" He decides, suddenly getting up and going back out. You blink at the doorway, he sure seemed to be happy lately. You smile a bit, getting out of bed to close the door and then get ready for school, stopping in the bathroom briefly to wash your face and wake up. You go down stairs to the kitchen, finding Osamu making breakfast.

"Here ___ we already ate." He tells you, putting the plate in front of you.

"Oh thanks. But what time is it?" You frown before eating quickly as Atsumu puts a cup of coffee near you.

"Well, if we don't leave in ten minutes we'll be late to period one." Osamu informs.

"I'm sorry." You manage between bites.

"It's okay. Just don't choke." He assures.

You finish breakfast and down the coffee. "Thank you, it was all delicious." You tell them, putting the dishes in the sink before hurrying out with the kitsunes. "Wait! I need to tell them bye!" You gasp pausing.

"They already left to go to town." Atsumu says.

"So early?" You huff continuing on quickly.

"Yeah, I think they're preparing for something." Osamu tells you.

"Oh okay." You tilt your head. "How's your dad this morning?"

"He tried to make breakfast." Atsumu chuckles.

"All the dishes he used are now permanently black." Osamu hums.

"You can still use them right?" You ask.

"Yeah, they still work fine." He nods.

"So what was the dream you had that made you so restless?" Atsumu inquires.

"Mm I saw a fox and a bush with the Ember berries on it. The fox ate it and became a kitsune…. Then when that was done I had a nightmare." You admit rubbing your cheek.

"That's a weird dream." Atsumu comments as Osamu raises an eyebrow.

"Well, what was the nightmare about?" The other inquiries.

"Teeth." You respond simply. They exchange a look at that but you soon move ahead once you catch sight of Tendo. "Tendo!" You greet happily.

"___!" He cheers in return, hugging you happily. "For a moment I thought you were going to skip school." He teases.

"No. I just woke up late." You hum.

"Well at least you're here." He grins, his teeth already pointed. You swallow and peer at the twins.

"See you two later." You tell them.

           "Sure." Atsumu nods.

"See ya." Osamu waves as Tendo starts for class with you.

"Did you sleep well?" Tendo asks lightly.

"Sure." You nod offering a smile to him as you swiftly reach your first period, only to stop short as a small group waits for self introduction. "Tendo…" You murmur with an uneasy frown as he swallows.

"Yeah. I know…" He breathes as you both move to sit down, feeling their red eyes on you.

"Good morning everyone. I'm Rory Akari, it's nice to be here." The imp smiles before her buddies make their introduction.

"Alright, go take a seat." Mr. Arrow tells them. You feel your heart drop as they sit behind you and Tendo. Mr. Arrow shifts, peering at you briefly before starting class. Tendo shifts closer to you, putting an arm around you. Glancing at him you could tell he wasn't happy about this, in fact he seemed annoyed.

'It'll be okay.' You tell yourself, trying to focus on class and not the stares that burned the back of your head.

The next period didn't have the imps thankfully. "I don't like that." Sakusa mutters. "They're clearly up to something."

"Mhm." You hum in agreement, frowning slightly. Tendo shifts, frowning as well.

"I'm sorry ___." He sighs guiltily.

"It's not like you asked them to come here." You point out, touching his hand.

"Still… If they find out what you are…" He moves his hand away looking down. You frown more but before you can say anything else, Daishou joins your table.

"What's up with the uneasy looks? Someone got cursed?" The naga inquires.

           "Feels like it." Tendo responds.

"You didn't notice the increase in imps?" Sakusa comments.

"I did this morning. They causing you trouble?" Daishou asks you, eyes narrowing slightly.

           "Not yet." You admit.

"It's coming though." Tendo grumbles. You shift, peering at the redhead. He seemed really down now, but didn't want to be touched. You weren't sure how to make him feel better.

"Just… Don't worry about it too much. We'll figure something out." You tell him lightly. He peers at you as you tilt your head and offer a smile.

"Today in class we'll be experimenting- I mean learning about the various dragon-like plants. Open your textbooks to page 78." Ms. Bomba interrupts the bustling classroom.

You shift and look away to open your book to the page, feeling Tendo's eyes watching you still. You would've looked back at him if not for the beautiful fiery rose picture on the very page you turn to. "Whoa…" You whisper, instantly enchanted by it. It seemed to have scales. The petals inside of the rose looked smooth with fiery colors while the outer petals seemed like rough scales, blue and indigo. Even the dark green stem seemed scaly with ivory thorns.

"That's the dragon rose." Daishou murmurs to you.

"It's breathtaking… I wish I could touch it." You breathe. Tendo blinks, leaning over to peer at the picture.

"It is something…" He agrees lightly.

           "Pay attention class!" Bomba hums.

"Saw that coming…" Daishou comments as everyone stands outside of the smoking classroom.

"I hate this class…" Sakusa grumbles unhappily as he sprays himself down with a cleaning agent.

"Um I can conjure some water for you to clean up in." You offer.

"Is it clean?" He sends you a look.

"Ummm… It's magic? So I'm not sure." You blink unsurely.

"Let me see." He requests. You bring up an orb of water for him before peering around.

"Where did Tendo go?" You ask Daishou.

"He said something about skipping this class and the next." He tells you.

"Oh…" You frown looking down. He didn't even say bye.

"Hey now, don't make that face. I'm sure he'll perk back up soon." Daishou awkwardly pats your head.

"I suppose this water is clean…" Sakusa comments, making you look at him to see him using a water test kit.

".... You carry that on you…?" You blink in awe.

"I'm always prepared." He responds simply.

"You are something else…." Daishou remarks.

"Are all kamaitachi like this?" You murmur to Daishou.

"I assure you this guy is one of a kind." Daishou whispers back.

            "You're being rude." Sakusa huffs.

"Sorry you just leave me in shock still." You sigh, rubbing your cheek.

            "Same." Daishou nods.

"Make me sound like an alien…" Sakusa mutters.

            "Sorry." You repeat.

"Ah Ms. Bomba is getting scolded again." Daishou breathes. "Guess we should make our way to our next classes."

"Right, see you guys later." You wave starting off but Sakusa joins you.

"I have plenty of time to get to my next class so I'll walk you to yours." He murmurs when you give him a surprised look.

"Oh, okay thanks." You nod to him gratefully. He hums in response, looking ahead as you both continue on. "I'm nervous walking alone here now. And not just because of the imps." You admit.

"I never had that problem, the mask helps keep people from approaching me… You on the other hand seem very approachable." He responds.

"... So if I looked scarier…" You nod.

"Don't bother. You're the least intimidating person I've ever met." He tells you.

"I… I can be scary." You scoff.

"Not even you seem convinced by that statement." He points out, making you pout.

"___!" Mika chimes a greeting, waving from down the hallway.

"You're out early too?" You blink as she joins you and Sakusa.

"Yeah, we had an easy test so I went to the library after… You had Ms. Bomba right? She get crazy with her experiment again?" Mika guesses with a giggle.

"Yeah. The desks closest to her caught fire this time." You nod peering at Sakusa for confirmation.

"The woman is a hazard on all accounts." He huffs.

"Yeah she is. But she's funny and her lessons are really interesting." Mika laughs.

"Sure… I'm heading to class now. Be careful." He dips his head, peering at you before heading off.

"It's not like him to escort you. Is he worried about the imps that showed up?" Mika comments as you both watch him go.

"He's not the only one." You admit with a sigh before looking at her. "Tendo is skipping class. He kinda left and only told Daishou. He seems most bothered by everything."

"If it were my kin I'd feel guilty." Mika breathes in understanding. "By the way. Daishou is that naga, right? I still haven't met him."

"Yeah that's him, I think you two would get along. He's cool." You smile as the bell sounds and students fill the halls.

"I hope I can meet him then." She nods as she puts an arm over your shoulders to keep you near as you both slip into the classroom before going to sit down. It wasn't a normal gesture for Mika.

'She's uneasy too…' You frown slightly. Seemed like everyone was tense with concern for you, and you weren't sure what to do.

"Hm? What's wrong?" Mika peers at you.

"... I just don't like the atmosphere everyone is carrying now… I don't want everyone to be worried but… I don't know what to do." You tell her.

"Ah that… I'm sure it'll be fine." Mika gives a smile. "Its just natural to worry over a friend that may be in a bad spot." She points out.

"You're here before me? Did class get blown up?" Kiyoko's voice makes you both look over as she joins the table.

"Ms. Bomba wanted to mess with dragon plants." You nod.

"Hehe. She's so wild." Kiyoko giggles, sitting with you and Mika. "Where's our imp friend?" She adds.

"Skipping apparently." Mika tells her as you frown slightly.

"That's peculiar, he's usually glued to you… I hope he's alright." Kiyoko tilts her head watching you.

"I'm sure he'll be fine. Probably just needs time to think." Mika offers optimistically.

          "Yeah…" You nod in thought.

After class you start for the cafeteria with the girls only to stop short. "Ah. I forgot my notebook." You turn about.

"We'll walk back with you." Kiyoko says but you wave your hand.

"It's just in class. I'll meet you in the cafeteria." You assure, before hurrying off back for class.

You go in and quickly retrieve your notebook, putting it in your backpack before heading out and back down the hall. You pass the hall that leads to the basement stairs and feel a rumble as surprised cries sound. You stop and turn to look back as Tendo skids into the hallway, looking alarmed.

His eyes lock with yours and he bursts at you, making you stiffen and heart drop. He scoops you up, little black mana wings sticking out of his back. Everything somewhat blurs as you blink in confusion until a large reptilian shape crashes into the wall as it comes out of the same hallway.

"I-IS THAT A DRAGON!?" You squeak out in alarm.

"YEP!" Tendo responds as the dragon launches after you two, jaws snapping. "I DIDN'T TOUCH YOUR EGGS!" He pleads with it, zipping around a corner and into the cafeteria as the dragon makes the building shake in it's chase. "WAKATOSHI!!" He calls before diving over a table with you to hide behind the demigod. The dragon bursts into the cafeteria with a roar.

Students scream and shout, moving to get away as Ushijima clears off his metal food tray before calmly standing as fire builds in the dragon's jaws, slitted pupils locked on Tendo. In one fluid motion the demigod slaps the dragon with his tray, making a deafening 'POW' along with a shockwave that knocks over some students.

There's a brief moment of shocked silence before Ushijima's one word command echoes the cafeteria.

           "SIT."

Tendo sits up, both of you holding onto eachother, looking at the demigod's back in awe as the dragon carefully obeys.

"Whoa." You whisper as the cafeteria erupts with clapping and calls of thanks to Ushijima.

"Are you two okay?" Ushijima peers back at you and Tendo.

"... Of course we are. You're awesome." Tendo chuckles, relaxing and resting his head against yours.

           "That was scary." You huff.

"Don't worry. I'll make it go back to where it came from." Ushijima states before going to the dragon and grabbing it by a horn before proceeding to half guide - half drag the creature out of the cafeteria.

"Phew… Sorry about that." Tendo murmurs pulling back with a sheepish smile.

"Ahem." A familiar voice clears their throat before you look over at the twin kitsunes. Atsumu standing with his arms crossed, ear twitching in agitation. "What the hell did you do, imp? Ya almost got ___ blasted along with ya." He frowns, tails lashing behind him.

"You guys hurt?" Osamu inquires with a head tilt.

"___!" Mika collides into your back, hugging you. "What just happened?!"

"That was a surprise." Kiyoko hums joining the group as well.

"Ah… Sorry guys. That was my fault. I really didn't mean to touch it's nest." Tendo rubs his neck.

"Why were you even near a dragon's nest?! Are ya suicidal?" Atsumu demands.

"Ah… Well…" Tendo's cheeks start to turn pink as he peers at a sack clutched in one of his hands.

"Wait… Tendo… Did you…?" Kiyoko leans forward, realization flickering in her blue eyes. Tendo swallows, meeting your gaze hesitantly as you tilt your head in confusion.

"I'm… Sorry ___.” He murmurs before taking out a familiar and beautiful rose, offering it to you. Your eyes widen, looking over the scales of the dragon rose, the center of the bloom held a warm glow, making you wonder if the plant would release flames from the center.

"Tendo…" You manage, gingerly taking it.

"Listen. I'm going to try and stay optimistic about all this." He tells you, making you look at him. He gives a big smile. "We'll get through this together, okay?"

You blink at him in surprise, at a loss for words. Surely he didn't need to put himself in danger just to say that. You look at the rose in all it's beauty; it feels powerful and firm. A smile comes to your lips before you hug the imp.

"Okay." You hum as he chuckles and hugs you back.

"Oi. We're here too ya know?" Atsumu interrupts in annoyance.

"Yeah. We got your back… Glad you're alright." Osamu smiles.

"We should hurry and do something about that rose. If it's fresh we might make it into a bush." Kiyoko tells you.

            "We can?!" You gasp.

            "That could work." Tendo smiles.

"Oikawa is going to do flips when he sees this." You beam, getting up.

"Let's go now." Tendo stands as well.

"Hold on. How about food first?" Atsumu adds.

"I'll make them something during the club time." Osamu hums as you and Tendo follow Kiyoko out.

"That damn imp." Atsumu's ears flatten in annoyance.

"Don't worry. There's no way the teachers are going to let him off the hook for the dragon thing." Osamu shakes his head.

After you had planted the rose stem as Kiyoko instructed, a dean came by to take Tendo to the office.

"I hope they're not hard on him." You frown as you and Kiyoko look at the door.

"I'm sure it'll be fine, I don't think anyone got hurt." She assures lightly.

"I can't believe he went through all of that just to say that." You look back at the rose stem.

"That was probably his way of making a promise to you… It's really sweet to think about." She comments with a smile.

"Yeah… But I wish he'd be more careful." You sigh but a smile appears on your lips at the sweet thought.

Tendo didn't come back until last class, seeming chipper despite the lecture he probably received from the principal.

"I'm back!" He sits beside you, hugging your side. You stiffen and smile a bit.

           "Welcome back." You tell him.

"What are we doing in this class?" He murmurs peering at your worksheet.

           "Test key." You answer.

"Eh? We're going to have a test?" He grumbles.

"Mhm." You peer at him as he pouts slightly.  You lean on him to draw his gaze before offering a smile.

"It'll be okay. We got this." You hum. He blinks before smiling back.

           "Right." He breathes.

After school, you say goodbye to Tendo, giving him a big and tight hug, making the imp cough and chuckle in delight, hugging you back.

"See you tomorrow." He rumbles when you release him.

"See you tomorrow." You smile before heading home with the twins.

"That guy is something else." Osamu hums thoughtfully as Atsumu scoffs, glancing back. His ears flicker before he looks ahead with a frown. "Detour?" Osamu's ear swivels to his brother.

"Yeah… Let's take them through the celestial realm." Atsumu breathes, turning the opposite way of home suddenly.

"Hm? What's going on?" You ask them in confusion.

"Our new imp friends seem to want to follow us home." Osamu answers simply. You swallow, wanting to look back but choosing to focus on the brothers instead. Atsumu takes you to the white marble door, opening it and grabbing your hand before leading you through the portal with Osamu close behind.

"Alright… The Elven door is just through this part of town." The blond mutters, continuing on over the glass. Today the clouds were drifting nearby, some passing over the walkways.

"Imp can't track scents right?" You look at Osamu as Atsumu guides you by the hand.

"Nope. And even if they could, the mana and clouds here make it difficult." Osamu answers as a cloud drifts past you.

"You know… We could just beat them up." Atsumu suddenly stops, turning to his twin.

"Well yeah. But not here or at school. We'll get in too much trouble." Osamu points out.

"Right…" Atsumu sighs before you all continue on.

Before much longer you reach the Elven door. Osamu opens it, looking back as you and Atsumu pass through. He follows, icing the door shut behind him.

"Ah. Should've done that with the first door." Atsumu huffs.

"Just thought about it when we got to this one." Osamu admits. "Anyway, let's head home."

"Right. I know the way this time." You bring out your key. "... Couldn't I have just used this at school?" You look at them.

"Not really, the portal takes a minute or two to shut after you use a magic key. If someone is following closely, they can end up in your home." Osamu informs. "They have gate watchers but they're more for alerting than defending." He nods to a vibrantly colored parrot that sat on a door nearby.

"Oh… Okay." You nod going to the door you usually take with mom. You move to put the key in when a black shape flashes in front of you, snatching the key. You stiffen and look after the crow in shock. "My key!" You gasp giving chase.

"Are ya kidding me!?" Atsumu growls, the twins taking their fox forms and running ahead after it as it disappears into the treeline. You stop at the treeline, the foxes disappearing from sight.

"Talk about rotten luck." A voice huffs as someone steps beside you. "They got your key too huh?"

You look over to see someone you recognized from your trip to the Dark District. He runs a hand through his wavy white hair before looking at you with his icy blue eyes. He pauses before smiling.

"Ah. I remember that pure face. Hope you were having a good day before this." He looks back at the forest.

"It was interesting. Guess the interesting part isn't over…" You answer. "Aren't you going to go after your key?" You ask him.

"Not yet. The season is about to change… It'll be easier once the leaves are out of the way." He puts his hands in his pockets.

"You're waiting for the season to change…" You echo. He sends you a wink before nodding to the leaves above your head. You follow his gaze as the wind picks up, the leaves turning to their warm colors before dropping off the trees all around you. You stiffen in surprise as the wind swept the leaves past. "Wow…"

"Right? Lucky us. Now let's see…" He starts into the forest now, searching the trees. You blink at his back before deciding to follow after him. Hearing the crunch of leaves, he looks back and blinks in surprise. "You're coming along? Okay. The name's Raze by the way."

"Raze…" You echo, the name clicking in your head. "You're on Iwazumi's team."

"Eh? You're a friend of his? You're a gutsy little pure, huh?" He chuckles.

"Um… Maybe? I'm ___ by the way." You respond with a head tilt.

"___…. ___…” He echoes before nodding. "Sounds like a name given with love."

You smile a bit at that. "Mm… I like Raze. Your name sounds strong."

"It does, doesn't it?" He breathes, stopping in a clearing. "There's the nest." He nods up at the large tree in the center of it. The twins were in the tree, swatting away the angry crows that pecked at them.

"Careful guys! They're just defending their nests!" You call.

"They got a bunch of keys up here! We can't find yours!" Atsumu calls back, ears flattened to protect them.

"Hmm. Shiny…" Raze opens his arms a bit, dozens of metallic diamonds appear in the air. Some of the crows break away to investigate but Raze moves the metal objects away. The distracted crows flying after them. "I'll distract them. See if you can find my skull key in there please." He calls to the twins as they quickly search the nests.

"Got them!" Osamu calls as they both jump down after a few moments.

"Great." Raze breathes, setting the metallic diamonds in the nests before joining your side as the twins come over, offering the keys.

"That's a creepy key." Atsumu comments as he hands Raze his key.

"Is it a portal one?" You ask curiously.

"That's right. It goes to the Soul Realm. My master entrusted it to me." Raze hums, sliding it into his pocket.

"Are you a Reaper then?" You inquire, becoming even more intrigued. He pauses, eyes zoning out briefly.

"I'm… Nothing special." He murmurs, making you blink. He then turns, clearing his throat as he does so. "May our paths cross again ___." He says as he goes back towards the town. You frown slightly at his back. For a moment you felt sad for him and couldn't pinpoint why. Once he was out of sight the twins seemed to relax.

            "Nothing special huh." Atsumu mutters.

"Tell that to our noses… What the hell was that guy?" Osamu huffs with a head tilt.

"Maybe he's a hybrid?" You offer.

"I don't think so. You can usually pick out whichever species is more dominant in one." Osamu responds.

"Like you, your human side is a bit more dominant, so from the first sniff that's what you smell like. Then we notice the fairy side after a bit." Atsumu responds.

            "So… He's new." You blink.

            "Maybe…" Osamu agrees.

"Well, whatever. Let's go home already." Atsumu shrugs.

            "Right."
