Chapter 9

21st April, 8 AM, Wednesday

While I was sleeping, my phone alarm rang. I hate waking up early. Once I got off my bed, I walked towards the bathroom. When I entered, I saw my Mom getting ready in a rush.

"Mom, slow down," I said "You still have time until work"

"It's not work that I'm rushing for...it's something else," she answered.

"Huh?" I said, confused "Then what are you rushing for?"

She stood silent for a moment, then she responded

"There's an important place I need to attend before work, I told my boss that I'll come late today and he agreed. I shouldn't be late for this important place"

"What's that important place?" I asked.

"I can't tell you right now, I don't have time. I'll let you know as soon as I come back from work and when you and Mike come back from school, it's something that the both of you have to know," she answered

"Where's Josh?" I asked.

"He's waiting for me at the car. We're both going to that important place before work today and at the same time"

"Oh, he got ready so quickly?"

"Yes. Now go get yourself ready, the bus will come soon," She said.

"I wonder what important place she's talking about..." I thought.

I got ready, took the bus, and arrived home.

21st April, 11:30 AM, Wednesday

It was finally lunchtime. I got my lunch bag and sat at the table. I didn't forget what I saw last night with Josh and I felt like I had to talk about it with Sabrina. Once I saw my best friend entering the cafeteria, I waved at her. She noticed me, waved back, and walked toward me.

"Hey Vicky," she began the conversation.

"Hey, Sabrina. How are you?"

"Good. You?"

"Good," I answered.

We then talked a little bit. We started the conversation by her telling me that her favorite romance book was out, that she read it, and she explained to me how good it was. I like listening to my good friend as she listens to me when I want to speak to her.

After some time, I thought to myself that it was the best time to tell her about Josh. I looked around, making sure no one was listening. Then, I began whispering to her

"Sabrina. You won't believe what happened yesterday"

"What happened?" my best friend asked, curious. "Why are you whispering?"

"It's something between you and me and I don't want anyone else to hear it"

I eventually explained to her what happened with Josh last night, the fact that he admitted to his friend that he lied to me about the black box. Unfortunately, there was no wifi at school. So, I couldn't show her the video I took. I honestly don't know why the school never gives us wifi.

"I see...I wonder what it is that he's desperate to hide to the point that he had to lie to you..." she whispered as well.

"I know, right? I'm thinking the same thing. He must be hiding a dark secret if he lied to me and I'm still trying to find out what that dirty liar is up to," I said.

She sighed and mumbled

"Right...I expected you to say something like this...I'm well aware that you don't like your stepfather..."

"And I was wondering if you could help me solve this case..."

"Well, you know that I'm not the kind to like action, thriller, and those kinds of stuff..." she said

I lost hope that she'd help me once I heard that, that is until she continued

"...but if it's something that has to do with my best friend, then I'm willing to take any risk for her"

I smiled. She's a true friend, she's a good listener and she respects me, which is why I trust her with many things. That includes family problems. We have been friends ever since kindergarten.

"Are Mike and your Dad joining?" The beautiful girl asked.

"No, they aren't"

"Why?"

"My Dad thinks that the situation is over and if I tell him this, he'll probably say things like 'Don't get involved, I'll take care of it' and things like that. He'll eventually forbid me to find out what's Josh's secret and I want to know what's going on with Josh," I explained.

"And Mike?" Sabrina asked.

"My father told me and Mike not to get involved in this case. And so, as you know my brother, Mike obeyed and won't be involved in this. At the same time, he also doesn't want me to get involved in this. So, he'll also forbid me to try to find out what Josh is up to," I whispered.

"I see..." Sabrina said. "Well, I'll help you with it, even though I'm not the kind to take risks"

"Good," I said. "Now, where can we meet?"

"What do you mean?"

"What's the best place where we could meet, so that we can discuss the plan? Lunchtime is almost over, so we can't talk about it here right now. Plus, I prefer talking about it normally than whispering like we are right now. Not to mention, I want to show you the video I took last night since I can't show it to you at the moment as the school has no wifi," I explained.

"Mmh..." said Sabrina, thinking "How about...how about we go to Park St-Luke? Most of the time, the amount of people coming here is very few. It should be a good place to talk about it together without catching anyone's attention."

"Yeah, okay. When?"

"Why not today, at 6 PM?" she responded "I don't have ballet class today, which makes it better and easier"

"Alright then. It's settled," I spoke.

"Good," she said.

Then, the bell rang, meaning that we needed to go to our next class. We said bye to each other and we left to go to our classroom.

21st April, 4:30 PM, Wednesday

School ended and I went back home. Once I entered inside, I found my Mom sitting on the sofa along with her husband. In front of them, there's another sofa. On the other sofa, Mike is sitting here.

"Hey Mom, hey Mike," I said.

"Hi sweetie," Mom answered.

"Hi Vicky," said Mike.

For some reason, Mom sounded serious when she answered me. I eventually looked at Josh and said without happiness.

"Hi Josh"

"Hey Vicky," he responded.

No one looked happy, which was so confusing.

"Is...everything okay?" I asked.

"Yeah, we're fine. Just go eat dinner, we need to talk..." said Mom.

I knew something was up. I leaned close to Mike's ear and whispered

"What's going on?"

"I don't know. They acted the same way when I came back from school. I asked the same question and they told me to just eat dinner and wait for you to come back so that we could discuss something," he whispered back.

"Now that's weird..." I said.

They all looked serious to me when I said hi to them, especially Mom. The only person who answered in a normal tone was Mike. I was still mad at my mother, but I was still concerned for her.

I just went into the kitchen, ate dinner, and walked back to the living room where they were all waiting for me.

I sat on the sofa next to Mike and asked my parents

"You guys wanted to talk to us?"

They nodded. Mom sighed before speaking. It seemed like the news she was about to share wasn't good. Even me and Mike looked at each other, wondering what's up. She eventually began speaking.

"This morning, Vicky saw me into the bathroom, hurried and she told me that I still had time before work, thinking that I was hurrying up for my job. But I told her it was because of an important place I needed to attend before work, which I did not tell her..."

She took a deep breath and said

"...that important place...was a courtroom..."

Both me and Mike's eyes widened after hearing this.

"What...what do you mean!?" Mike exclaimed.

"For what? Why were you in a court!?" I exclaimed as well.

The woman who gave birth to us didn't say anything for a moment, then she answered my question

"Your father...he wants to keep you guys"

Me and my older brother didn't say anything, but we were still shocked. The woman in front of us then explained

"Ever since the car accident happened, your father couldn't trust me to be near you guys anymore. So, your father decided to sue me about it to see who will have authority over you..."

We still didn't say anything for a moment. Even though I already knew the answer to my question, judging from Mom's face, I still decided to ask

"Did Dad win?"

The woman who gave birth to us nodded.

"The judge said that we're gonna have to see each other once a week, from now on," said Josh, who didn't speak during the whole conversation until now.

No one said anything, and then our mother spoke

"Now, the two of you, go pack your stuff. You're leaving now"

"Alright," I said.

"Yes Mom," said the 16-year-old boy.

And that's exactly what we did. We all packed our bags. It took me time because I couldn't use my 2 arms. So, some people came to help me out. Then, Mom gave us a ride back to the man who gave birth to us's house. Once we arrived, I saw my father standing next to the door, waiting. I guess he was expecting us.

After I got out, I walked to my Dad and gave him a hug.

"Hi Dad"

"Hey Vicky"

Mike also got out of the car, walked towards the detective, and hugged him.

"Hi Father"

"Hey Mike. Good thing that the both of you are okay"

I'm well aware that he was worried for me and Mike as well. But he's even more concerned for me because of my damaged hand holder.

After a short time, we let go of each other.

"I'll go get my bags," I said.

As soon as I was about to leave to get my things, I suddenly felt something grabbing my left arm. I looked around and found Mike holding my unbroken arm.

"No, your arm is broken. I'll get the bags"

"It's only one arm, Mike," I responded, annoyed.

"Well, the bags are heavy. You're gonna need 2 arms to grab them. Not to mention, you couldn't pack your bags alone quickly back at Mom's house, you needed our help to make it faster. I'll get them, you go inside," Mike explained.

"Your brother's right," Dad spoke "You go wait for us inside, ok?"

"Fine..." I sighed.

My sibling then let go of me, and I went inside the house. I wasn't happy with the fact that they started to get too worried about me. Mike, my father, my mother, and Josh all helped each other to put the bags inside the police's home.

Usually, when my Mom drops us off at our father's house, she always greets her ex-husband, and Dave greets her back. Then, they have a short conversation before my Mom leaves. Not this time. Instead, the police looked at her with wrath, while my Mom didn't look back at him. They didn't say a single word to each other.

Once we got our bags, our mother said bye to us, and we said bye back to her, except my father. Then, she left, along with her husband. When we all entered inside, I asked my Dad

"Dad"

"Yes?"

"I just wanted to let you know that I'm leaving today to hang out with Sabrina at Park st-Luke at 6 PM. Is that ok?" I said to him.

I believe you guys know this already, but my father does know Sabrina.

"Yeah, sure. I'll drive you there, ok?"

"You don't have to, I'll walk," I said, confused by my father's words.

The park ain't that far from my Dad's home and he would always allow me to walk to a place that ain't far, which was what confused me.

"No, I won't make the same mistake your mother did. I have to make sure nothing bad happens to you"

"It's ok Dad. I know how to take care of myself," I said, trying to reassure him.

"I know that, darling. But still, I'll drive you there"

I sighed in annoyance and responded

"Ok"

I don't like it when people worry too much about me, it's annoying, in my opinion. The detective smiled, looked at both me and my brother, and said

"I'll go to my room. Call me if any of you need me, alright?"

"Alright," we both said.

21st April, 5:50 PM, Wednesday

"Vicky, you ready?" Dad asked, waiting for me at the exit door of the house.

"Yeah, I am," I responded, leaving my room to join him.

"Ok, good," the detective said, seeing me coming in his direction after I left my room.

We said goodbye to my oldest sibling before we went outside the house. Then, the man who gave birth to me started the engine of his car, and we both entered inside his vehicle. He eventually started driving me and we arrived at the place.

"Thanks, Dad," I said to my father after getting out of his car.

"No problem. Call me once you finish hanging out with Sabrina, alright?"

"Yeah ok," I answered.

Then, he left and I began looking around, trying to find her. I eventually found her, sitting on a bench. I ran to her saying

"Hey Sabrina!"

She looked at me, looking surprised for a second. Then she smiled and responded back

"Oh, hey Vicky. How are you?"

"I'm good, you?"

"Great," she answered.

"So, let's get to the point?"

"Oh right. Yeah, let's begin talking about the plot," the beautiful girl said.

To be continued.
