S. OWENS' NOTEBOOK: EXCERPT 001.

THE FOLLOWING HAS BEEN TRANSCRIBED AND DEDUCED FROM SAMANTHA OWENS' PLAYBOOK, FOUND IN THE WRECKAGE OF THE 2003 BRIEHAM CROWS PLANE CRASH.

NOTE: Samantha Owens' playbook consists of team plays, player stats, record of previous games, book keeping from previous games, and miscellaneous notes about the Crows. Anything stated in these notes can not be confirmed to be factual, but rather to be used as an observational lens.

Excerpt #001
Title: Warmup Partners
Dated: February 10th, 2002

Coach Pierce asked me to keep a record of the pairs in warmup throwing before each practice really starts. I am not sure how this is beneficial, and part of me thinks she just wanted to keep me busy so I wouldn't bother her in her office. She didn't tell me how she would like the data recorded, so I decided to make tallies. That wasn't all that exciting, though, so I took the pairs that had the most warmups together.

Liza & Octavia

They're best friends, it's natural for them to choose each other, even when it doesn't make sense logically. Liza should be throwing with Alex if she plans on pitching, but instead she and Octavia throw together every practice. They don't move in unison, they don't throw the same, and they can't always predict where the ball will go once it leaves each other's hand. They are not parallel, but rather Liza leads and Octavia will follow. Octavia throws harder, faster, like she's trying to prove something. Liza smiles with every throw to Octavia.

Tara & Malia

I have heard that Malia picks Tara when they need partners just because Malia's father is the pastor at the biggest Catholic Church in town, and Tara's family are big supporters. They don't seem to talk much. Unlike Octavia and Liza, they do move similarly despite their stark differences. Tara is the tallest player on the team, and Malia is one of the shortest. Theoretically, they shouldn't be able to throw as hard or quickly as each other, but they do. I don't know who sets the tone and who matches it, but they never drop the ball.

Tara is usually poised and what some might call too perfect, but lately I have noticed her becoming distracted when the baseball team plays at the same time in the field beside the softball diamond. Malia makes up for it by adjusting her own throws.

Dana & Ducky

They're both benchwarmers. Dana is statistically better than Ducky, but no where near what the stereotypical 'coach's daughter' would be at. Ducky tries too hard: she throws with as much power as she can muster, but it's misdirected and usually doesn't fly straight. Dana is usually still able to catch them, but it shakes her confidence in her own throw. I would suggest having them switch partners, but I don't know who could make Ducky better.

TK & Theo

TK is equally the last person you want as a partner, and the first. She's bossy, and expects the absolute best out of everyone, because that is clearly the standard she holds herself to. Theo is the perfect passing partner for her. She does exactly what TK needs, even if it isn't verbalized. She throws a little harder when TK is too far, and she aims ahead of her because she trusts that TK will get there in time. If softball was a two man sport, they would be the ideal team. They disagree sometimes, but one of them is always right in the end, so it doesn't really matter.

TK pushes Theo, maybe more mentally than anything, and sometimes appears harsh in criticizing her, but Theo doesn't seem to mind.

Alex & Si-Woo

Alex and Si-Woo warm up away from everyone else, in the bullpen. As pitcher and catcher, they do move in tandem. Alex calls the pitches for Si-Woo, even when she doesn't need it. There are times where Alex will ignore what Coach Pierce tells her to call, and simply looks at Si-Woo. No hand sign, no nod of confirmation, no shifting of her body behind the plate. She just looks at her, yet Si-Woo still knows what she wants her to throw. I have never seen them talk outside of games and practice, but it seems they don't need to.

Alex loads the gun, and Si-Woo shoots it— or maybe Si-Woo is the gun and Alex releases the safety.

UPDATE: Since Si-Woo's suspension, Alex has been throwing with Hazel. I don't think they dislike each other, but Alex seems distant. She doesn't go as hard as she should. I don't know if that's because she thinks Hazel can't handle it, or if she just doesn't want to. Hazel is too hard to read.

Cleo & Cory

Cleo can't stand Cory. I don't know how they ended up as partners, but that is obnoxiously apparent. They cause disruptions in warmups, and there have been a few 'accidental' injuries between them. Cory throws hard and fast, but with little direction or guidance, often nailing Cleo in the shin or wrist when she can't gauge where the ball is flying. She never seems apologetic, like she expects Cleo to correct the mistake and catch it no matter what next time.

I think Cleo only picked Cory as her partner to further upset TK, but the difference between Cleo and TK is that one of them doesn't care.

Franny & Marty

Marty is chronically late, and almost always smells like marijuana, like it grows on her jersey. Franny usually throws in a triangle with Liza and Octavia until she comes. She seems to do better with them, like she actually puts in effort and wants to look impressive. With Marty, it seems like they're just tossing a ball to each other, like a drunk father and his clumsy son. Franny pays too much attention to Octavia and Liza's throws, and Marty's head is usually in (smoke) clouds.

Hopefully this suffices.
Sam Owens.
