Chpt 1: Rise Above
Five Years Later:
"It was not my fault!" i exclaimed. Rhaenyra sighed as she put her head in her hands. "Then how do you explain you only having a small cut on your mouth, and the poor handmaiden here looking like she's just gone through war!" Alicent shouted as i rolled my eyes.
King Viserys put his hand up tiredly, signalling his wife to keep calm. "She called me a bastard. She said that once you find out who my true father was you'd sell me to a whore house in Fleabottom! What was i supposed to do?!"
"I never said that, your grace" the handmaiden said. The more she spoke, the more my blood boiled. This handmaiden had been taunting me for months now and i finally snapped.
"Are you sure you did not attack her because she is lower in society?" Alicent questioned. "Oh gods be good. Of course not! And i did not 'attack' her... I just... Punched her. Then she attacked me and i fought back" i said.
"This was a savage attack!" the queen mumbled. "Can you please be quiet!" i shouted. The two of us continued bickering as poor, weak king Viserys stood up from his throne. "Silence!" he shouted shutting us both up.
"Alysanne, i want you to apologise" he said. "Apologise for what exactly? Protecting my name?" i questioned in annoyance. "For attacking the girl! This is not the first fight you have been in but it will most certainly be the last... Or there will be server consequences, do you understand?"
"If my father was here, he would have the cunts tongue" i spat looking at the cunning handmaiden. "Enough, Alysanne! Do you understand?" he questioned more sternly.
I paused as i sighed. Rhaenyra raised her eyebrows at me, signalling to agree with a stiff lip. "I understand... I apologise" i mumbled. "Good. Now, miss, i am sorry for your troubles. This won't happen again" he said to the woman.
"Thank you, your grace" she said with a frown. But as she turned her back to him, she gave me a slight smirk. I took a deep breath refusing to acknowledge her.
"This matter is settled" Viserys said as his wife shook her head. I could tell Alicent did not like me. I'm guessing that is because of my father... Or the rumours spreading of me being a bastard.
Either way, she wasn't my biggest fan. As everyone left throne room, Rhaenyra gave me a swift slap to the back of my head. "Ow!" i exclaimed.
"I told you enough fighting! My father will not put up with it for much longer" she said through gritted teeth. She spoke with love and was just worried for me.
I never had a mother figure in my life due to the fact my mother was a tyrant. But i would say the closest thing i've had to one would be Rhaenyra and Laena, my fathers wife. My father, Laena and their two daughters live back in Pentos.
I lived with them for a while but the "king" or better yet, his wife and my mothers side of the family believed it would be better for me to grow up in Kingslanding. Where i could learn to be a "proper lady" and get a good education.
I missed my family dearly. I missed my fathers protection, Laenas presence and my sisters laughter. My sisters were only two years of age but still had prominent personalities.
Baela, was much like my father and i. Rebellious and short tempered. Whilst Rhaena was gentle and sweet. It has been nearly a year since i have seen them. Laena writes to me often and i do her.
I've told her about the cunts that i'm forced to live with and she tells me to rise above them. Never works but maybe one day i will listen to her.
My father rides out to see me on his dragon, Caraxes, as much as he can but he likes to avoid his brother and his wife so it's not as often as i would like.
"I know, Rhaenyra. But i am telling the truth. The woman has been tormenting me for months! I just couldn't take it anymore" i said. Rhaenyra sighed as she moved a piece of hair out of my face.
"Listen sweet girl, there will be people like her tormenting you your whole life. But you mustn't fight. You must rise above it" she said with a weak smile.
I looked away from her as she spoke the same words Laena has said. "What if i can't?" i asked. Rhaenyra gave me a confused look. "I feel angry all the time. Inherited from my mother i shall believe" i mumbled with a fake scoff.
"This may not be a bad thing, Aly. You could use this to your advantage. Channel that anger into people who are worth it."
I gave her a small smile. "I will try" i said. "Good" she said. The sweet moment was quickly interrupted by Rhaenyras son, Jacaerys, running into the throne room with princess Helaena by their side.
Helaena was the only daughter of queen Alicent and king Viserys. I was quite fond of the girl. She was much kinder than her brothers. The girl was only the age of four, but still i enjoyed her company more than most of the people in the castle.
"Mother!" small Jacaerys exclaimed tumbling into the room as Rhaenyra lifted the boy into her arms. He has just learned how to walk and has been scuttling around the whole castle. "What are the two of you doing running around the castle?" Rhaenyra questioned with sweet laughter.
"Look what Helaena has mother!" Jace said as Helaena showed us the small caterpillar running around her hands. "Look Aly! Can we raise him into a butterfly?" small Helaena asked.
"We've done it before, i believe we could do it again" i said as Helaena jumped up with joy. "Come along then. We can hold him in your chambers" i said catching the girls hand.
"Would you like to join us, princess?" Helaena asked Rhaenyra. "I'm quite alright as a spectator, sweet sister. Tell me when he grows wings and then i will join you" Rhaenyra said.
Helaena gave her a small smile as we made our way out of the throne room. Queen Alicent did not allow Helaena to speak to me or any of her children for that matter. But Helaena did not care. She was much too young to know of the strife between the two sides of her family.
And i was not going to be the person to inform her about it. "What shall we call him?" Helaena asked. "I am not sure. What about Maegor?" i suggested.
"No!" she exclaimed. She must still be afraid of the story i told her about her ancestor "Maegor the cruel."
"What about Aerys?" she suggested. "Perfect!" i said with laughter. "What are you two talking about?" a voice questioned. I sighed as i recognised the owner of that voice.
Aegon. Eldest son of Alicent and Viserys. He was only an adolescent but i could tell he was already going to become a drunken sleaze.
For example now, he stumbled towards Helaena and i clearly drunk. "Come, Helaena. Your brother seems... Tired" i said trying not to roll my eyes at his behaviour.
"I am not tired. Now, i'll ask again. What are you two talking about?" he asked seeming almost angry. "We have a caterpillar, brother. We're going to raise him into a butterfly" clueless Helaena said sweetly.
Aegon scoffed. "Give it here" he said yanking the bug from Helaena. She jumped and held my hand tighter. "Ugly little thing" he said holding it close to his face.
"Aegon" i said putting out my hand signalling him to give the bug back. "What? You want the dreadful creature back?" he questioned with a smirk. His smirk stayed on his face as he dropped the bug to the floor.
Helaena jumped slightly at his roughness with the bug. "That's enough" i said sternly. Aegons smirk grew as he stomped on the small creature. Helaena let out a squeal as she stood behind me.
"What is your problem!" i exclaimed. "I believe our mother told you to stay away from the bastard" Aegon slurred through his drunken haze. I took a deep breath remembering Laena and Rhaenyras words.
Rise above.
"I suggest you leave" i said keeping a straight face. He laughed to himself as i bent down to Helaenas height. "We will find another caterpillar. I promise" i said softly.
My heart ached as she began to tear up. "Don't be an idiot, sister. It was a bug!" Aegon yelled. I shook my head. "Helaena. I think it is better if you go back to your chambers and find your mother" i said.
I watched as the girl walked slowly away. I turned to Aegon and bit my tongue. "Excuse me, your grace" i said sarcastically as i tried to push passed him.
Aegons cocky smirk faded as he grabbed my wrist. "You think you're better than me, bastard. You know bastards are only good for one thing. Fucking in whore houses" he spat through gritted teeth.
I tried to remove his grip as he held on tighter. "Maybe that's what i should do with you. Remind you of your place" he said. I felt my stomach sink as he spoke those cruel words.
"Get off!" i exclaimed shoving him into the wall. "The next time you raise a hand to me, will be the last time you have hands" i said kicking the drunken sleaze as he laid on the floor.
I scoffed as i watched him groan in pain. "And your mother truly thinks you can be king" i mumbled leaning over him. He gave me a shocked look. I kicked the boy one last time in his jaw as i spat on the floor he laid on.
"I guess i'm not rising above today" i mumbled to myself as i walked to my chambers.
(Authors note: Alicent will not be the true villain in this story. Please remember, this is Alysannes point of view, not the full story)
