Chpt 29: The Cubs

Nine Months Later:

"Push my lady! Push!" Lillie called out. I screamed in pain, gripping onto her hand. No one really tells you how terrible child birth is. I salute queen Alicent for doing it four times.

"I can't do this" i muttered as sweat dripped down my face. "Once this is over, you'll have babe, Aly. You can do this" Lillie said. I tried to listen to her words, but this was the worst pain i had ever faced.

I tried to push once more but it was still not enough. "One more push, my lady!" the midwife repeated. "You said one more fucking push ten minutes ago! Do you want to push for me cunt?!" i shouted. I didn't mean what i said. Well, maybe i did.

Lillie smirked slightly as she dabbed a cold rag on my head. "I want... I want my husband" i said. "Men can't be in the birthing room. You know this" she said. I groaned in pain and frustration.

Suddenly, the door flung open as Laena ran inside. "Is she alright?" Laena asked frantically, hurrying to my side. "She's doing well. But she needs one last push."

She gripped my hand tightly. "Breathe. I know it's tough... But you need to do this" she said. I took several deep breaths trying to calm myself.

Laena helped me sit up on the birthing bed as i pushed harder and harder. Shooting pains ran up and down my body. But i felt more comfortable now that she was here.

I pushed and pushed until i finally felt the babe slip out. The midwives grabbed it and began to clean it off. I sat up waiting to hear the baby cry. I felt tears of joy run down my cheek as i finally heard the babes first cry.

"You did it" Laena said. "It's a boy, your grace" she said as she wrapped him in a blanket. I took a inhale of relief as i rested my head on the backboard. I heard the door swing open once more as shouting could be heard from the hall.

"It is my wife and my child! I'm going in!" i heard Cregan shout. I gave him a weak smile as he knelt down by my side. "I heard you shout. Are you alright?" he asked taking my hand. I nodded weakly as he kissed my hand gently.

"It's a boy, lord" the midwife said cradling him. Cregans mouth fell open at the sight of him. He had strands of dark brown hair that laid upon his head perfectly. One of his eyes were deep blue whilst the other was brown.

"Healthy?" he asked. "Kicking like a goat, lord" she said. I laughed with happiness looking at the most beautiful face i had ever seen. "Would you like to hold him?" she asked. "It's a boy... We have a boy" he said. I felt tears of joy burn my cheeks. "We have a-"

I interrupted myself as i let out a scream of pain. Cregan jumped back slightly along with everyone else. "What's happening?" Laena asked. "I... I don't... I don't know" the midwife said.

Lillie felt my stomach as her face dropped. "You heard the princess? What is happening?!" Cregan exclaimed. Lillie let out a sigh as she gave me a weak smile.

"You ready for round two?" she asked.

My face faltered at her words. "What do you mean?" i asked angrily. "There's another babe in there" she said. "Two?... Two babes?" i questioned, barley being able to comprehend it.

I looked to Cregan who looked equally shocked as i. "That... That's unexpected" he mumbled. "That's one word for it" i said through gritted teeth as i began to push once more.

"That's funny that, my father was a twin" Cregan said. I screamed even louder at his words. "Do you not think that is something i would have liked to have known prior to giving birth!" i exclaimed.

I grabbed Cregans hand so tightly that i was almost certain i would break it. I saw his face twitch with pain but he kept quiet. This pain almost felt worse than before.

But yet, i pushed through the pain until i finally felt the second babe slip out. I gasped for air as this time Cregan took the babe instead of the midwife. "It's a girl" he muttered. He cleaned her off and wrapped her in fur.

I reached out my hands and took her from him, afraid to let anyone touch her. I held her close to my chest with the afterbirth still coating her. But i didn't care. In truth, i never wished to let her go.

Cregan sat in the bed beside me as he held our son. "Leave us" he said. "Well done my girl" Laena whispered as she laid a gentle kiss on my head as Lillie doted over the small babes. Everyone cleared the room leaving just Cregan i with the babes.

"We need names" he said. I looked over at the small boy as i brushed his cheek. "I have already named him" i said. He scoffed. "Do i not get a say in our sons name?" he questioned sarcastically.

"Rickon" i said. Cregans face fell as i spoke his fathers name. "I think it suits him" i said softly. He nodded weakly as he gulped. "As do i" he said. "And the girl?"

The small girl i had cradled in my arms had strands of red hair, like fire. I remember meeting my mothers sister. She had deep red hair just as she. Her eyes were light green, almost grey in some lights.

"What about Serena?" Cregan suggested. I smiled at the name. "I like it" i mumbled, still in awe of the two babes. "Would you like to switch?" he said. I nodded as we both struggled to hand each other the two babes. "Or we can just hold onto the ones we have and take them later" he said. "Yeah that's a better idea."

Three Days Later:

The bells have rung for three days in celebration of the new babes. We invited all the lords and ladies all over Westeros to come and see them. Nearly all of them accepted our invitation... Except for the king and queen.

I'm sure they are still upset with my fleeing without telling anyone but i was much to happy to care. Everyone crowded around the feasting table as Cregan and i sat at the top of the table.

Rickon was much more of a peaceful child. He rarely cried unless we was hungry, unlike Serena, who cried at any chance she got. "Let me see my grandson" Daemon said taking Rickon from my arms. He cradled him softly as i smiled at the scene. Cregans mother was showing Serena off to the lords from Dorne at the other side of the room.

"He'll be the strongest knight in the seven kingdoms" he says softly. "Serena could grow to be a fearsome knight too" i said raising my eyebrows at him. "She sure could. If she wishes it, she'll be the head of my kingsgaurd" Rhaenyra said walking towards us.

I saw my fathers face fell at the sight of her. "Daemon" she said with a small smirk. "Princess" he mumbled, obviously nervous. The three of us grew quiet as the tension filled the air. "So, what are we all talking about?" Cregan interrupted, wrapping his arm around me.

He was oblivious to the awkward tension. "Gods... You look like you've just seen the inside of your dragons ass" he joked nudging Daemons arm. My father gave him a scowl as he handed the babe back to me. "Excuse me" he said storming away from us.

Rhaenyra opened her mouth to speak, but he had already fled before she could. "Princess. I'm so glad you could come" i said. "I wouldn't miss it, Alysanne. I can't believe you are a mother" she said. "Neither can i."

My eyes drifted to the two figures who had just walked into the feast. It was lady Blackwood and Jeyne Arryn. I smiled at them as i handed Rickon to Rhaenyra. "Would you excuse me a moment" i said leaving Rhaenyra and Cregan to speak.

I ran over to lady Blackwood, embracing her tightly. "I'm so glad you could make it. You got my raven?" i asked. "I came right away. You had twins, is that right?" she asked. I nodded as she jumped up and down excitedly. "That couldn't have been easy on your... Well, you know" Jeyne Arryn said as i laughed.

"I'm glad you are here too, lady Jeyne" i said taking her hand in mine. "I came for the babes yes... But that it not the only reason i am here" she said. I gave her a confused look as Alysanne Blackwood smiled excitedly.

"You are the daughter of lady Rhea Rhoyce? Are you not?" she questioned. "I am" i said. "Then why are you not ruling Runestone?" she asked. Her question took me off guard.

"Well, i guess that decision was taken from me long ago. After my family send men to... Keep me away. Life got in the way. And before i knew it, i became lady of Winterfell" i said. "Who says you can not be both?" she asked with a small smirk. "I don't understand what you-"

"I am the protector of the Vale... And i am also a woman. Thrice have mine own kin sought to replace me. My cousin Ser Arnold is one to say that women are too soft to rule. I have him in one of my sky cells, if you would like to ask him."

I chucked softly at her words. "What i mean is, i know what it is like to have your own kin think you are unfit to rule, simply because you are a woman. But you are the rightful heir. You are here whilst you very distant cousin rules in your stead. That is simply not fair. With me by your side, the council would have to agree that you are the rightful heir to Runestone."

My mouth fell open as she spoke. "And now that you have children, i expect you wish for your daughter to become heir to Runestone too. Her fate can be more than just some lords wife. She could be one of the most powerful women in the Vale" she said. Lady Jeyne seems to be the only one in Westeros who actually believes that i would be a good ruler. "I would like that very much, lady Jeyne. Thank you" i said. "But what do i do if my family does not believe i am fit to rule."

She laughed loudly. "Then feed them to your dragon. It's simple. I have my sky cells and you have your dragon" she said. "I think that sounds like a great idea" Blackwood said. The three of us laughed.

I don't know what it was, i was feeling more emotional than usual. Also more affectionate. I grabbed the two women and embraced them tightly. I could tell lady Jeyne was not usually shown affection as she tensed by my touch. But she let me embrace her anyway.

"No one has ever made me believe it was ever possible to take Runestone... No one except for you both" i mumbled holding back tears. Lady Blackwood gave lady Jeyne a worrying look as she knew i was never this emotional.

"It's really nothing, your grace... In this world of men, we women must bound together" Jeyne said.

I gave them both a thankful smile before making my over to Cregans mother. I heard Serenas crying from across the hall as Gilliane rocked her back and forth. "I've been trying to ease her but nothing is working" she said.

I took Serena from her and held her close to me. She slowly began to calm as her crying stopped. "Perhaps it's time for her to go to bed. Do you know where Cregan is?" i asked. She shook her head. "The last time i saw him he was with baby Rickon."

I nodded to her as i made my way to our chambers. I smiled as i saw Cregan bending down beside the babes crib. "Not enjoying the feast?" i asked. "I think i'd prefer the feast if it was just us."

"That wouldn't be a feast then, would it" i said. He chuckled as i laid Serena down in her crib beside Rickon. "When do these things hatch?" he questioned pointing to the dragon eggs. "When they want to hatch... If they ever do."

"And if they don't?" he asked. "Then they'll claim one. Just as i did" i said. I laid down on the bed, tired from the festivities. Cregan laid down beside me as he was just as tired as i.

"Maybe it is just me... But is there some tension between your cousin Rhaenyra and your father?" Cregan asked. I turned to him giving him an annoyed glare. "Don't speak of such things. My father is married or have you forgotten" i whispered.

"That does not mean he is not in love with her. It just means he is content with his wife, whilst being in love with someone else... And you did not answer my question" he said with a teasing smile. I rolled my eyes.

"You are not the only one who sensed the tension... But them still being in love is untrue" i said lying through my teeth. I did not know the full truth so i would not speak it. "So she is in love with ser Harwin?" he questioned.

I sat up in the bed and smacked his chest. "You should have your tongue cut out" i said. "I'm just asking my wife a question in private! I'd never speak this to anyone else!" he exclaimed.

I stayed quiet. "All i'm saying is, the prince Jacaerys did not get his brown locks from his silver haired father" he said. I stayed quiet once more. "You should not speak about a child's legitimacy without knowing the whole truth. Or have you forgotten how i was treated because of rumours like this?" i questioned harshly.

Cregan sighed as he remembered. He kissed my neck gently as he rested his head on my shoulder. "I'm sorry... I did not mean any harm" he said. It was very difficult to stay angry at him. I gave him a weak smile.

"I am quite fond of the prince. No rumours about his legitimacy will be spread by me, you have my word" he said. "Does he still write you letters?" i asked. He laughed. "You mean his mother. The boy is still not able to write! But yes he does. He is still working on his sword skills."

I turned to him, inches away from his lips. "Soon enough you'll be teaching Rickon to fight" i said. He smiled at the thought. "And he'll be the best fighter in the Seven Kingdoms. Our children will never be put in harms way on my watch" he said.

I laid a gentle kiss on his lips. "That's why they'll have dragons" i said. He looked to the babes and looked back to me. "How about more?" he asked. "More children?" i questioned. "Why not?"

I laughed kissing him once more. "How about ten more?" i teased.

The next day, Lady Jeyne Arryn, Cregan and myself rode to the Vale. At first, my family were very obstinate with naming me the rightful heir to Runestone. But once Saphiras flashed them a sight of her teeth, they all agreed. And now i am the lady of Runestone.

I had almost forgotten what my childhood home looked like. I did remember the fields. The green fields that went on for miles and miles. The Runestone castle was much too dull for my liking.

So i fixed it. I left behind the halls full of bad memories and darkness and replaced it with colour and laughter. I banished my family from my lands and sent them to wherever was furthest away from me.

Everything had fallen into place. My daughter would not have the same fate as i did. No one would ever question her legitimacy, no one would ever force her into a marriage and no one would steal her lands. She could be whoever she wanted to be. And so could my son.

And over my dead body, would either of my children ever be in put in such danger as i have.

(Authors note: I've changed the times/ages of this story so Cregans and Alys first born children will be a year younger than Lucerys and btw... Now we're getting to the juicy parts of the show)
