Chpt 3: Winterfell
I stood in front of the castle gates as i waited for the carriage to be loaded up. Viserys forced his family to see me off as Rhaenyra was holding her young sons hand with a slight frown on her face.
"It is time my girl" Viserys said putting a hand on my shoulder. I tried to put on a brave face for the king, but i could not. "I am sorry about this. But... You know this is what i have to do."
"I know, your grace" i said with a small nod. King Viserys gave me a weak smile as i made my way over to Helaena. I knelt down to her height and embraced her tightly.
"I'll miss you dearly, cousin" i said into her shoulder. "The winter snow will come for us all. Snow will burn in the night" she mumbled. I pulled out of the hug and gave her a confused look. I brushed the hair out of her face giving her a comforting smile.
Helaena often spoke in riddles which no one understood. But i was did not want her to feel isolated or "mad" as some would say, so i just ignored them.
"I hope to see you soon" i said. As i walked over to Rhaenyra, i saw the young prince Aemond give me a smile. Aemond wasn't as hateful as his brother, but i could tell he heard things from his mother that may have made him dislike me slightly.
Rhaenyra rubbed my arm to comfort me... It did not work. "This will be good for you" she said. "It does not feel that way" i whispered. "Alysanne. You are named after a kind but fierce queen. Remember that. Your name gives you more power than you know. Winterfell will do you good" she said.
"I doubt that very much. You are just sending me away like everyone else" i said. "What do you mean?" she questioned. "My mothers family despised me and stole my birthright and gave it to my cousin instead. The king then took me from my father and is now sending me off again because he is sick of me. Why can't i just return home?" i asked.
Rhaenyra sighed. "He is not sick of you, Aly. He just wants you to have a bright future. My father may... Turn a blind eye to some matters. But he is not stupid. He knows of the tall tales spreading about you in the castle. He just wishes for you to prove them wrong" she said.
"And have i not? Have i not proven that i am my fathers daughter!?" i exclaimed angrily. Rhaenyra gave me a stern look signalling for me to keep voice down. I rolled my eyes at the thought.
"You have not claimed a dragon. Though this is not your fault, it does cast a shadow over your... Legitimacy. Please understand why this is the best thing for you. Or do you want to be locked away with the High Septon?"
I sighed. "I understand" i mumbled. She kissed my forehead as i shook her off. I paused as i looked at her. "Do you think i am my fathers daughter?" i asked. She let out a small laugh. "I have no doubt you are."
This made me smile slightly. "Lady Alysanne. A word?" queen Alicent called out. I squeezed Rhaenyras hand before making my way over to the queen.
Queen Alicent pulled me away from everyone as she looked at me with a slight sign of compassion. "I wish you luck in Winterfell" she said. Her kindness shocked me.
"Thank you, your grace" i said with a stutter. She sighed. "You know i do not despise you, right?" she asked. I nodded quickly. "Of course not, your grace."
"But my children are my children. You'll understand one day... And your profanity to my son has not gone unseen. And he is the prince. This is your punishment and it's not the worst outcome" she said. I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
I'm not sure what i was more angry about. Alicent saying i was cruel to her son, or her saying i would have children one day. I was sure i would never marry. I had no taste for it. Every man i have met has made my want to throw
myself from the top of the castle.
"Yes, your grace" i mumbled. "Now i believe it's time for you to take your leave" she said looking at the loaded carriage. I gulped as i saw it. Before i left, i ran towards Lillie to say my goodbyes.
"I'll miss you the most" i said fighting back tears. "I'll miss you too. Please don't stay there too long" she said with small laughter. "Trust me, i don't plan on it. I hear it's cold in the North. I do not do well in the cold."
She smiled as she looked me up and down. It was almost like she was remembering every detail of me... As if it would be the last time she saw me.
"Write to me, please. Keep me apprised on your children and the ton. And if Aegon gives you any trouble, go directly to the king" i said. She nodded.
I gave her a weak smile before reluctantly heading into the carriage. I closed the carriage door and gave the castle one last look. Even though i despised nearly every moment there, i would miss it.
Once the carriage left the castle grounds, i allowed a few tears to run down my cheek. I wiped them quickly. I hated crying. My mother often scolded me for crying when i was young.
It was a sign of weakness. A woman must never show weakness. It makes us look even more feeble than men already believe. I took a deep breath in and out trying to compose myself. To Winterfell i guess...
"Miss! Miss are you awake!" the driver called out. I woke from my slumber as i wiped my tired eyes. "What?" i questioned groggily. "We're here miss. We've arrived in Winterfell" he said. This woke me up quickly as i sat up in my seat.
I fixed my dress and took a deep breath. I could already feel the cold through the carriage as i shivered. The carriage stopped as i gulped.
I have been moving around for years now but i have always been surrounded by family. Now, i'll be surrounded by strangers. "Untamed" strangers i've heard.
The driver helped me out of the carriage as i looked around at Winterfell. It was actually quite nice... Cold... But nice.
My eyes drifted from the castle to the family of four lined up. The Stark family i presume. A woman made her way over to me as she suddenly embraced me. I froze up at her forwardness but eventually eased into her.
Her hair was chestnut brown and was in a braid that fell perfectly on her shoulder. She was smiling brightly as she took both my hands in hers. I could already tell this was Lord Rickon Starks wife, Lady Gilliane Glover.
"Lady Alysanne. We are all so happy you are joining us" she said. "Em... Thank you, Lady Stark. I am happy to be here" i said, clearly fibbing. "Please, call me Gilliane. Everyone does."
Gilliane coughed loudly, signalling for her husband to greet me. Lord Rickon Stark walked swiftly over as to not upset his wife. "Lady Alysanne. Welcome to Wintefell" he said.
The man was scruffy looking but he also looked kind. "Thank you, lord" i said with a small smile. "Come" Gilliane said pulling me over to her other children.
"Lady Alysanne, this lovely girl here is Sarah. She'll assist you around Winterfell until you are comfortable and know your way around" she said. "It's nice to meet you" i said to the girl.
"I've been so excited to make your acquaintance, lady... Is it true your family ride dragons?" she asked. Gilliane gave the girl an annoyed look as she straightened up. I laughed at her question. "Yes... I don't, but the rest of my family do" i said.
It was then i heard a scoff come from the man beside her. The three of us gave him an annoyed look. "Alysanne, this... Ignorant boy would be my son, Cregan" she said with a twinge of anger.
"It's... Nice to meet you. Lady Rhoyce, isn't it?" he asked. "It's Targaryen" i said with a hint of offence. "That's not what i've heard" he mumbled.
"I'm sorry?" i questioned as my blood began to boil. "A Targaryen without a dragon? Rare is it not? And with hair the colour of oak-"
His mother smacked the back of his head as he groaned. "What!" he exclaimed. "Manners, boy! We've talked about this" she said through gritted teeth.
Cregan rolled his eyes as he grabbed my hand. He lent down and kissed my knuckles gently. "My lady" he mumbled. My annoyed expression stayed as he smirked slightly.
Gilliane sighed as she took her husbands arm. "Your things will be brought to your chambers whilst Sarah shows you around the grounds" Rickon said.
"Come lady. There is much to see" Sarah said grabbing my hand and pulling me away. My eyes stayed put on the Stark boy as i saw his mother scowl him.
I could already tell, i would be staying far, far away from him.
