Chpt 40: A Funeral For A Dragon
"Lord Stark!" one of the guards exclaimed seeing Cregan and his children storm through the halls of a Dragonstone. "Not now. Where is my wife?" he asked sternly. "Your wife? I-"
"I saw Saphira outside. Where is she?" he asked once again. "I do not know, my lord" the knight muttered. Cregan pushed passed him, feeling a pain building in the pit of his gut with every step he took.
It was then he saw Daemon, standing by the painted table. He was quiet... He never saw the prince so quiet. In fact, Cregan noticed the whole of Dragonstone was quiet. "Prince Daemon" Cregan said. Daemon did not even bother to turn around.
"Go find Jace and Lucerys. All of you" he whispered to his children. They all reluctantly nodded as they left the room. Cregan held his breath as he took a step closer to the rouge prince. "Where is my wife?" he asked.
"With the silent sisters i presume" he muttered. Cregan felt his heart sink as he tumbled slightly on his feet. He shook his head. "She is alive" Daemon said feeling weak as he hung his head. "But the babe is not."
Cregan was not a weak man. In fact, if you asked the people in Westeros to describe him, they would probably say he is the bravest man who ever lived. But in this moment, he felt weak. He felt afraid.
He was too late for his wife. And too late for his child.
"Where is... My wife?" Cregan asked again, his voice cracking as he spoke. Daemon looked to the lord, with a stern look. He took a step towards Cregan as the lord held his head up high. But to everyone's surprise, Daemon put a hand to his shoulder. "I'll bring you to her."
Cregan followed Daemon through the halls, everyone bowing their heads in solidarity as he passed them. He held his breath as he was met with large metal doors. "She's in there... She is hurt and she is grieving. Be gentle with her and be her strength" Daemon whispered. Cregan did not answer. He took a deep breath making his way inside. He gulped as he saw Alysanne standing at the alter wrapping their child in cloth.
Alysannes pov:
A bond between a child and a mother is one like no other. There is only one person who truly touches your heart, and that is a babe. You grow a child inside you and then raise them to be the best version of yourself.
I told the Silent Sisters i wanted to wrap my son myself. I wanted to make sure he was wrapped with the up most care, not by strangers. I began to wrap the babe gently in my blood stained gown.
In truth, i didn't want to let him go. I smiled softly at the boy until i felt my knees go weak from underneath me. I held him close to me kissing the wrap softly. "Aly" i heard a soft yet familiar voice call out.
I didn't bother looking up. I heard footsteps run towards me as i felt hands wrap themselves around me. "I'm sorry, i'm sorry, i'm here now" Cregan repeated as he kissed my head softly.
I buried my head into him as a quiet sob left my lips. "You didn't get to see him" i muttered. Cregan stayed quiet. "He was beautiful."
We stayed like that for a while. I don't truly know how long. But eventually, Cregan lifted my limp body as i stood to my feet. I held onto him for support still clinging to the babe.
"Who did this?" he mumbled. I took a deep breath putting a hand to my wounded stomach. "The greens have usurped the throne and crowned Aegon as their king. When Rhaenys and i tried to flee Kingslanding i-"
I couldn't finish my words. I shook my head not wanting to remember what happened. "Who did this?" he asked again. "A knight" i said. "Which knight?" he asked getting more frustrated.
"Ser Criston Cole."
Cregan nodded his head before trying to leave the room. "Cregan... Cregan wait" i called out trying to follow him. As i took a step forward, the pain from my wound over took me as i fell to my knees. Cregan heard me fall as he ran back towards me.
"Gods" he muttered under his breath seeing how weak my wound made me. "You Cregan Stark, are not allowed leave me to start a war with a knight" i shouted. "You are going to stay here, by my side and bury our child with me. And you are going to continue to stay by my side until i say you can leave. Do you understand?!"
He stayed quiet before slowly nodding. "I want to bury him in the tradition of my house. Mine" i spat through gritted teeth. Cregan nodded. He wasn't even sure if it was possible to bury an unborn child in the crypt so he agreed. "Then that's what we'll do" he said.
"I must... I can not let the children see me this way" i said looking at my gown. "I will take him until you are ready" he said. I gave him a cold glare. I didn't want anyone to take him, not even Cregan. I knew if i gave him to someone else, i would never hold him again.
"You give him right back to me when i am ready. Do you understand?" i said sternly. Cregan sighed as he rested his forehead against mine. "You have my word" he said.
I gave the boy one last look before reluctantly handing him over. Cregan assisted me to my chambers as we were met with Rhaenys. "I will help you dress" she said glancing at the wrapped babe. I did not thank her. I stood there in a daze, clinging to Cregan's arm.
"Thank you" Cregan said thanking the princess for me. I took her hand as she closed the door behind her. I sat on the bed as Rhaenys dressed me in a black dress with red stitching. I stared at my hands as the dried blood made me shiver.
"Let us fix this" the woman said as she grabbed a wet cloth and began to clean the blood off of me. "The princess Rhaenyra has set up funeral plans for your babe... They're waiting for you" she said. I closed my eyes refusing to listen to her.
"I do not want to go" i said. The woman sighed as she put the cloth down. "The greens took your child from you. They stole Rhaenyras throne and have sat an unworthy man simply because he has a cock. You must not let them weaken you. If you do, they win."
I shook my head. "I want to go home" i said. Rhaenys was shocked to see me this way. I didn't want to fight... But she knew i must.
"Your father used to say that the sheep in the Vale were prettier than the women. Stronger too" she said with laughter. I gave her a confused look. "Are you a sheep?" she asked. I bit my lip as i shook my head.
"No... Your a dragon. Be a dragon."
I took a deep breath holding back the tears that tried to escape me. I nodded my head as i stood up by myself. "Do you need help?" she asked looking to my wound. I shook my head. "Let's get this over with."
When i opened the door, i saw Cregan rocking the babe back and forth. I grabbed his shoulder as he flinched slightly. "Let's go" i said.
The gods were angry. The waves were rough around Dragonstone as my family stood around the funeral pyre. The wind whisked through me as i grasped my babe, never wanting to let him go.
I felt someone touch my arm as i saw Baela. "Come, sister" she whispered. Rhaena came to the other side of me as my sisters walked me to the funeral pyre.
With every step, i felt like my legs would go out from underneath me. I reluctantly laid the babe down giving him one last kiss on his head before letting him go. Baela and Rhaena held me close incase i fell to my knees with grief.
"It's time" Rhaena choked out. I shook my head. "Not yet... Please" i muttered. Baela and Rhaena tried to pull me away from the pyre as i gripped onto the stone. "No!" i shouted.
"Aly... Please" Baela pleaded but i ignored her. It was then i heard a loud roar from the mountain where Saphira stood. She felt my pain and anguish. I looked up at the white dragon with teary eyes.
"Ziry's jēda naejot ivestragī jikagon, riñnykeā" i heard my father say. "It's time to let go of him, child." He was standing beside Cregan who refused to look at the pyre. I closed my eyes and finally walked away from the stone table.
"Dr-" i felt myself choke up before i could finish. I took a deep breath knowing what i had to do. "Dracarys" i called out as Saphria bathed the funeral pyre with flames. I looked away immediately as Cregan brought me into an embrace.
I slowly began to look around as i saw my whole family standing beside me. There was my sisters giving me a reassuring smile, Rhaenyra holding onto my shoulder, my father staring at the burning table with rage, my brothers hanging their heads in solidarity and my children who came up behind me to give me an embrace.
Suddenly, we all turned our heads as we heard Nyras Kingsgaurds draw their swords. I let out a sigh of relief as i saw Serena and ser Erryk make their way up the hill. Once Serena saw me, she ran towards me, gripping onto me tightly. "My child" i mumbled into her shoulder.
"Are you alright?" Cregan asked. "Yes father" she said. Cregan kissed her head gently, thankful he did not loose another child. My eyes then drifted to ser Erryk as he stood before Rhaneyra. He reached into his satchel, pulling out Jahaerys's crown.
"I swear to ward the queen, with all my strength and give my blood for hers. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall guard her secrets, obey her commands, ride at her side, and defend her name and honour" he called out as he knelt down before her.
Rhaenyras face faltered at the gesture as she looked towards me. I gave her a weak smile and nodded to her that everything would be okay. Daemon then took the crown from ser Erryk as he looked towards his wife.
His eyes were full of pride but also fear. Fear for what this crown could bring... But he knew, whatever was to come, they would be ready. He then placed the crown on Nyras head as he said "My queen."
Everyone on Dragonstone bent the knee too the
rightful dragon queen. I winced in pain as Cregan helped me kneel to the floor. Rhaenyra held her head high, trying to be strong even though her entire world was crumbling before her.
Once the funeral pyre was nothing but ash, everyone rose to their feet. Cregan assisted me up as i clung onto him. "I've got you" he whispered to me. I was about to put my hand to my pregnant stomach, until i remembered there was nothing left to touch but pain.
"I... I'm so sorry i was not there. But i promise you Aly, our son will be avenged" he said. I shook my head as i shushed him. "Please stop" i said.
"I should be sorry. This was all my fault. I shouldn't have trusted the greens. I was a fool. But i promise you this, i'll never be fooled again."
