Chpt 43: Worlds Come Crashing Down
Back In Kingslanding...
Alicent stood before the green court, barley able to listen to them speak. "Prince Aemond will fly to Storms End to treat with lord Borris Baratheon and ask for his support. I'm sure with a betrothal he will most definitely be on our side" one of the Lannister men said.
Alicent, still stuck in her daze was staring into space, trying to calm her mind. "Your grace?" he said. She finally snapped out of it as she took a deep breath in and out. "Yes... Yes a betrothal will be good" she said.
Suddenly, Otto Hightower walked into the room, returning from his journey at Dragonstone. "Father? What is the news?" Alicent questioned. "Rhaenyra has said we will have our answer by the morrow. I do not know if she will agree to our terms but she didn't seem too begrudged with them" he said.
Alicent nodded but Otto did not seem happy. "There is more" he mumbled. Everyone's heads shot up at the man's nervous tone. "Lady Alysanne has lost her babe... Her husband is a Stark, they will not take this kindly. The likely hood of us getting their support is now impossible. In fact, i'm sure they'll most likely be our enemy."
"Mother have mercy" Alicent mumbled. Her knees fell weak as she sat down in her seat. She knows how deeply Aly cared for her children, and now she has lost one by the hands of the greens. "I don't see the threat" Aegon spoke up.
"They have dragons, your grace. The North has five dragons to be exact" Otto said. "Four baby dragons with weak riders" Aegon corrected. Alicent sighed at her son's foolishness. "They have the whole of the North, Aegon. And they do not take offence on their house lightly. They may yet come for us."
"Not if we come for them first" he muttered under his breath. Aemond stiffened at his brothers words. And he did not even know why he did. Why should he care? The savage Stark girl held a knife to her brother's throat. One of the Stark boys is mad and the other is too kind for a war. He won't last five minutes in a fight.
And then there's Serena. "Gods be good" he cursed under his breath. "I'll go to Storms end immediately. I'll get their support don't worry, mother."
"Aemond" Alicent called out before he had a chance to storm out of the room. She gripped his arm tightly, forcing him to turn to her. "There has already been too much loss. There shall be no blood shed today. Swear this to me now." Aemond paused before nodding.
"I swear it."
Little to the greens knowledge, Helaena was peering through the crack of the door. Her breath hitched as she heard about Alysannes babe. She bit her lip feeling her stomach turn. She did not even want to think about her dear cousin in pain.
She ran back to her chambers grabbing a piece of paper and a quill to write to her. She knew if her family found out she was writing to Aly, they'd scowl her for eternity. She wrote her letter quickly and tugged it towards her chest.
She didn't know who to trust to give this to, she couldn't trust anyone. So she grabbed her hood and sent the raven herself.
"Boy in the sky, prince with one eye. Dragons will fight, North will have its bite."
Winterfell...
"You are not stitching" Gilliane said. Serena rolled her eyes at her grandmother. Lyarra and Edwynn looked between the two women, feeling the tension. "And your hair... It's different."
"Congratulations. You noticed" Serena mumbled. "It's... Southern" her grandmother said. "Maybe because i was just in the South" she said. "Enough of the cheek, Serena. You've been like this ever since you came back" she snapped.
"I'm sorry grandmother. Would you like me to act normal? Would you like me to forget everything that has happened?" she questioned sarcastically. Her grandmother sighed as she gritted her teeth.
Lyarra cleared her throat to break the silence. "Grandmother... Since Serena is acting like such a brat, could i your favourite now?" she teased. "Lyarra!" their grandmother exclaimed.
Serena threw her stitching to the floor as she began to storm out of the room. "And where do you think your going? You have lessons!" the old woman questioned. "The horses need feeding" Serena mumbled. "I fed them this morning" Lyarra called out but Serena ignored her.
Silence fell upon the three ladies as Serena slammed the door shut. "Do you think she's acting this way because of the traitor prince?" Edwynn whispered. "Oh most definitely" Lyarra whispered back as the two girls chuckled.
Serena grabbed two buckets from the stable and headed to the lake to fill them. Her mother and father always warned her never to walk through the woods by herself due to wildlings. So she took the long way around.
As she did, she hummed a melody to herself. This often calmed her in times of stress. And right now... She felt as if her brain would explode. She wanted vengeance on the greens for hurting her family... But her night with Aemond also stayed with her.
She saw a side of herself she had never seen before. She was... Fun. She didn't worry about her duties nor what court thought of her. She also saw a side of the prince she's almost sure no one else had ever seen too. As she continued her way to the stream, she heard a ruffling sound from the shrubs beside her.
She jumped as she clutched onto the buckets. "Who's there?" she called out but there was no answer. "My father is Cregan Stark of Winterfell. If you harm me... You'll... You'll have the whole North after you!" she shouted.
Suddenly, the figure stepped out from behind the shrubs as Serenas breath hitched, dropping the buckets to the ground. "No" is all she could get out. "Serena please just-"
"No!.. What in the Seven Hells are you doing here?!" she questioned. Even seeing Aemond made her blood boil. He was dressed in riding gear and that worried her further.
"I need you to listen to me now" he said inching his way towards her. She shook her head and tried to rush home, but before she could, Aemond grabbed her arm and forced her to look at him. She tried to hold her head high as she stared at the man is his one remaining eye.
"You have sworn allegiance to the wrong heir, Serena" he began. "My brother is my fathers first born son. The law of succession states that the kings first born son will be heir, not daughter. Just because my father called her his heir does not make that dream true. You will die if you stay on her side, you must know this. My brother will burn your home to the ground and your family with it if you continue to support her. Do you understand?"
Serena shook the man's grip off of her. "I am Serena Stark of Winterfell. You have entered my land without my fathers permission. You, Aemond, are a traitor to the realm and have no right to threaten me nor my family in our own home. You should take your leave before i take your last remaining eye. Do you understand?"
Aemond gritted his teeth at the woman's words. "You are a fool if you stay" he said. "And you are a fool to serve your brother" she spat back. He winced at her words. But... It was then it hit Aemond. Though he took a liking to Serena, he had to admit he found her naive. Too naive for her own good. But this could be useful to him.
He put his head in his hands and turned away from her. "I have no choice" he mumbled. Serena still held her head high, but she began to listen to him. "What?" she questioned.
"If i don't serve my brother... He'll kill me. And if i try serve Rhaenyra... She'll kill me too" he said. Serenas face twitched at his words. "Rhaenyra will accept you if you let her. If you go to Dragonstone and sweet fealty to her, she will welcome you. I know this, Aemond."
Aemond still had his back turned to her, until she made him face her. "You must believe me. She will accept you" she said cupping his face in her hands. He laid his hands over hers as she gave him a weak smile. "She is kind."
Aemond fought the urge to roll his eyes at her words. "Then i will go" he mumbled. Her smile faded with shock. "You will?" she asked. He nodded. "I will."
She laughed with relief bringing the man into an unexpected embrace. "Thank you" she muttered. Aemond tensed up at her touch. "I'll... I'll return here once i am done in Storms End" he said. She nodded.
"Good. I will wait. And i will meet you right here."
Alysannes Pov:
The sound of horses trotting and snow crunching echoed in my ears. Cregan and i rode beside eachother, racing to the mountain. It had been an age since we had fun like this.
Freya stopped at the lake, gulping up the water as i laughed. "I told you she still had it in her" i called out stroking her main. "Freya is younger than Benjen. That race was unfair" Cregan said once he caught up to us.
I jumped off of Freya smiling at Cregans anguish. He was always a sore loser. I then looked out to the mountains with a fresh blanket of snow, breathing in the cold air. Cregan stood beside me putting his arm around my waist.
"We haven't been here in a long time" he said. "We haven't, have we? The last time i was here Saphira almost swallowed you whole" i teased. "First of many times."
I felt Cregan's head rest on my shoulder as i tried to feel the only moment of peace i had gotten in days. "How are you?" he whispered. "My wound is healing" i said feeling my stomach, a sadness washing over me feeling the bloat go down.
"I believe all the lords have agreed to follow Rhaenyras claim. They'll have men when she beckons us" he said. "Good" i said with a nod. "Who knows... Maybe we'll be marching soon" Cregan muttered.
I gave Cregan a deadly glare as he spoke. "No Northern blood will be shed unless absolutely necessary, right?" i questioned sharply. Cregan stayed quiet as he put his hand to my once pregnant belly. "Northern blood has already been shed... Our blood is on the greens hands" he whispered.
I shuffled uncomfortably as he gripped my hand tightly. "We will get our revenge" he said. "What makes you believe i want revenge?" i shot back shaking off his grip. "Aly-"
"You have never asked me what i want. What i need at this time. I have just lost my babe and all you can think about is plotting your war. Do you know what i want? I want to keep my remaining children safe. I want to keep the North safe. I want to get Helaena back before she is harmed or held captive and i want to help our queen in any way we can without putting our children in harms way."
"It does not work like that, Aly" Cregan said trying to keep his calm. "And why not?" i questioned. "You can not keep the children safe and help our queen. And if we do not fight the greens for what they have done, they will think is weak. They will come for us again."
I turned my back to him refusing to meet his eye. "Aly... I know this is hard, but it must be done" he said. I gulped at the thought. I have had a painful pit in my stomach for days now. I fear what is to come. I wish to just take my children and flee from our lands. But i know we can't do that either. "I need time to think" i mumbled. "Alright" Cregan said. "How about we ride up to the mountains and-"
"I need time to think alone, Cregan" i spoke up. He seemed caught off guard by my words. We never made any decisions without eachother. "Alright... I'll ride back home then" he said. "That would be best."
He leant in to kiss my cheek before i shook him off. I did not want him to touch me. I didn't want anyone to touch me as this moment or i felt like i would burst up in flames. He gave me a weak, reassuring smile before climbing back on Benjen.
"Be back before dark... If you can. The wildlings will be out by then" he said. "I know" i said with a nod. Silence washed over the both of us before Cregan reluctantly left me to my thoughts.
I let out a held in breath as i held myself up by gripping Freya. In truth, i did not know what i was trying to think about. Millions of thoughts flooded my head as i splashed the cold water my face from the river.
The one thing i knew no one could take from me was the North. And for now, that was all i could be sure of.
Back at Winterfell, Lyarra had escaped her grandmothers clutches and was making her way to the Dragonpit. Now that she had a dragon, she wanted to be with him for every second of the day.
As she paced through the snow, her eyes then drifted to Serena who had returned from the river. She looked to the girl who had left in a rage and down manner return gleefully. She walked towards her sister, folding her arms. "Why are you so happy?" she asked.
"What?" Serena questioned snapping out of her daze. "You're smiling... You practically skipped over here" Lyarra said. Serena smiled to herself as she held her tongue. "I don't know what your taking about" she said trying to walk away.
But before she could, Lyarra grabbed her arm and pulled her back. "Where were you?" she asked. "I was down by the river getting the horses water. Calm down" Serena said tugging her arm away from her. Lyarra looked to the empty buckets as she sighed.
"Serena... Tell me what happened" she said sternly. The naive girl rolled her eyes. "Fine!" she exclaimed. She pulled her sister away from the crowds and behind the barn. "Aemond came here. He came to see me... He's going to swear fealty to Rhaenyra."
Lyarra did not seem as excited by this news as Serena was. "What?" she muttered. "He's going to Storms End to meet with lord Borris and then he's going to Dragonstone to bend the knee to Rhaenyra" she said.
Lyarra took a step away from her sister as panic set in. Jace had told her before she left that he wanted to give the message of his mothers coronation to the lords. And now he was going to be met with the vengeful Aemond.
"And you... You just let him leave? You did not tell father?" Lyarra questioned. Serenas excited smile faded. "Well... No but-"
"But what, Serena! That man is dangerous and he set foot in our lands and you didn't bother to tell anyone. Your more of an idiot than i thought!" she exclaimed. Serenas face twitched at her sisters words.
"He's on our side, Lyarra. I'm sorry that you don't have any friends to understand this but there is more to people that meets the eye" Serena snapped back. "You know what he did to our brother" Lyarra said stepping towards her sister.
"You put us all at risk by trying to keep this a secret. You need to get your head out of that peaceful land your mind is constantly in and realise what has happened. Rhaenyras birthright was stolen for her and our mother paid the price. And you care more about some prince than us? If any of us were killed it would have been your fault."
"I do not care about him more than mother!" Serena exclaimed in defence. "Really? Because it seems like you do. That's all you ever wanted anyways. You always looked down on me for not wanting a husband but now you are willing to betray us all for that boy-"
Serena cut Lyarra off with a smack. Her words were not true. She had grown up knowing that family is more important than anything. She wouldn't betray them for anyone. But she had hope of peace unlike her sister. She always had. And she never looked down on Lyarra for not wanting a husband... She looked down on her because she thought she was a cunt.
Lyarra held her cheek giving her sister a deadly glare before grabbing her hair and pulling her to the ground. Serena shrieked in pain as she smacked her sister repeatedly. They continued fighting until their brothers caught their eye.
Rickon and Ned ran to both their sisters aid dragging them off eachother. "What's happened?" Rickon asked frantically. "Our sisters a rotten bitch!" Lyarra exclaimed fighting Neds grip to get back to her sister.
"Your just angry because someone actually had taken a liking to me. It's not my fault no one in the North nor the South wants to speak to you! Maybe if you weren't such a cunt they would!" Serena shot back. The comments made them both even angrier than they were.
"Atleast i'm not whoreing around with-" Lyarras words were cut off by a cough from behind them. The children all turned around to see their grandmother with a stern look on her face. None of them had even noticed that half the of the Northerners were staring at the scene.
They all stood up straight, hanging their heads to avoid their grandmothers eye. "What is wrong with you all" she spat through gritted teeth. "Hadn't enough happened without all of you causing more trouble?! What if your mother or father had seen this?"
They all stayed silent. "Go to your chambers. All of you" she said. They listened to her command, even though Ned and Rickon tried to protest that they were not apart of anything but lady Gilliane would not hear it.
They all walked silently back until Serena blocked Lyarras path. "I know what i'm doing. I'm not stupid. You must trust me with this" she whispered. Lyarra shook her head. "I can't trust you. And you don't know what your doing. If something happens, it will not be the greens fault, it will be yours."
Serena frowned at her words as the door slammed in her face. She truly believed she was doing the right thing. She did not know Aemond, but he swore to her that he spoke the truth. Why would he lie?
(authors note: if i see anyone hating on my girl serena i'll cry. she just wants everyone to live in peace even though that's not really possible. but she's my pookie so i forgive her)
