bonus chapter : see you again

Haneul was darn exhausted.

For one, her two younger siblings kept running around the restaurant and though there weren't any customers during the monochromatic afternoon, she felt relentlessly tired, craving nothing but the soft material of her bed against her aching back. She had just gotten well from her fever and here she was standing behind the cash register, running an errand for her parents.

The errand not only included watching over the restaurant but also her siblings, her energetic little brother who was a toddler and another seven year old, her sister. As if Haneul did not have a better job to do being a university student.

She raked a hand through her newly bleached hair. She was never the biggest fan of coloring her hair but when her lasik surgery went better than expected (she was scared for her life, mind you) and now she did not have to wear her thick glasses anymore like she had been all her life, she thought, just fuck it all. And she dyed her hair.

Now a curly mop of blonde mess rested on her head that cascaded down to her chest. A lot of people could barely recognize her after the very short makeover.

It did make sense, because even Hanuel realized how many people started to compliment her big round eyes since she stopped wearing her specs. Even the freckles around her nose started to look somewhat more aesthetically pleasing.

She heard the bell of the store chime but her worried eyes were trailing off her little sister Haneun trying to teach the toddler how to walk, both swaying and disappearing into another door which was connected to their living room.

The restaurant was pretty small, only a few tables and it was linked to their apartment. Even in the busiest days there wouldn't be many customers.

Now that the thought got to her she wondered what kind of customer it was to visit in such an ungodly hour, visit a restaurant that seemed like a barren desert from the outside.

"Ah, so you want hangover soup? But I don't think you even drank last night, Daisy." A male voice was heard and when Haneul looked at the said person her eyes slowly went wide.

Memories started to knock on her brain, cells surging in light's speed. It had been more than a year, maybe two years since the senior graduated and she had last seen of him.

"Oh, you want it for Wonho? Alright." Shownu's eyes were raking the menu placed over the cash register, his hand cutting the call off and putting his phone back in his coat's pocket.

He still looked the same, the same person Haneul spent days and nights thinking about. Some times she smiled thinking about him, blushed, and even cried when he left the university and never came back.

Often Haneul thought that it was just one of her silly crushes, like the crushes she got on Haikyu boys during her teen era, or the crush she got on actor Park BoGum three years ago when she had only stepped down from being a teen.

Now that she couldn't keep her eyes off Shownu and her heart beat inside her chest just as erratically as almost two years ago, she thought, maybe, just maybe, it wasn't mere infatuation.

She really did fancy the senior. She really did like Shownu.

"I'd like a hangover soup, please." He finally looked up at her and immediately she turned and rushed towards the kitchen to inform the cook.

It was weird to be honest, but she thought it would be creepier if he saw an unknown girl gawking at him with tears glistening her eyes.

Thus, she did not come back to the empty register and left it as it was until she had calmed down and the soup was packed and ready to go.

Haneul thought Shwonu would not be there anymore because she left without a word, or because Haneul could be dreaming and it was all just a part of her fever dream, but he was still there. The dying glow of the sun falling on his brown hair from the frosty glass door.

She couldn't, and she didn't utter a word and only took his credit card after she placed the bag on the register for him. As she was swiping the card over the computer deck she heard his voice, "Have I seen you somewhere?"

The earth stopped rotating right there. She finally looked up, to find him staring back at her face intently. Dark brown pair of irises now a lighter shade of chocolaty pearls under the evening sun rays.

His eyes glimmered as a small smile made its way onto his face. Haneul swore her heart stopped too.

"You were in the English club, weren't you? Your name is... wait, I can remember your name."

He had a thinking look on his handsome face and Haneul knew he could never tell. That was long ago, she was never important to him. Other than that, even her relatives couldn't recognize her after the makeover.

"You're Haneul, right? Your name that is, I hope I am not wrong."

Shownu had just disproved Haneul's whole theory. She could barely keep up with Shownu's gaze drinking her in, and at the same time she couldn't look away.

"Y-yes, I am Haneul. I can't believe you recognized me," she hardly stammered out without choking on her words.

"I remember beautiful pair of eyes when I see one." He took the bag from the table. "And you complimented my gymnastic performances too, though I don't practice anymore."

If earth had stopped rotating the second before it was orbiting around the sun too fast now, so was her heart going completely haywire. She could barely process a thought and talk sanely.

"Please do come by more often." She grabbed the few coupons placed in a jar on the register, meant to give out to committed customers. She held them out politely, trying to hide her nervousness as much as she could.

She did not want this to be her last meeting with him. She did not try to pursue him last time, and after confirming that he really had a place in her heart, she was not going to do the same mistake. Rather she would take the chance and grab onto Shownu.

The beautiful brown man put down the bag on the register and took the coupons. "Of course. Daisy really pushed me to come here today. The food must be great."

He put the coupons in his coat's pocket and took the package again. Haneul found a newfound courage in her. "Can you give me your business card too, if you have any? I just think you could come to our club meeting someday. You were one of the founders, after all."

Her cheeks were on flame as she spoke, her words didn't seem very reliable and she wondered if Shownu could tell she had the biggest damn crush on him.

The man only put down the bag, yet again and pulled out his wallet to search for a card.

After all this time, Haneul realized something was different here, something was wrong. She was so occupied with her erratic heart and brain that only now she noticed that Shownu was using his left hand doing everything, and only his left hand.

Her eyes trailed off to his right where his arm limply laid by the side, a black glove covering his palm unlike the left which was free from it.

"Did you hurt your right hand?" The question slipped off her tongue and when she saw his shocked face, his motion stilled with the wallet in his left hand Haneul immediately regretted asking that.

She had met him after two years and perhaps it was a sensitive topic, which she did not have to know as an outsider.

"I'm sorry..." She bit on her lower lip, feeling defeated.

"I can't move my right arm on my own willing most of the time. Some of the nerves were damaged in an accident. I received treatment for a long time, and still seeking therapy." Shownu said, his face nonchalant as he handed her a card.

Son hyunwoo, business owner of the clan club and the clan beers, Haneul glanced over the bold letters when she received it with her slightly trembling hands.

"I have a lot in my past, Haneul, some things I can never shrug off. I don't know if you'll still invite me here on in the English club, if you knew all that." Shownu smiled again, though morose and gloomy just like the blue afternoon outside.

The beautiful brown man's eyes were as sad as ocean blue.

"I will still like you, no matter what!" Haneul shouted out, failing to hide her choked up words and nervous side this time. "I... I know you're a good person, I can tell."

Shownu's eyes went wide and it fell silent the next second. Realization suddenly hit Haneul like a monster truck.

She had just confessed to Shownu, really just confessed to him out of nowhere. Not that it wasn't obvious already.

"Thank you," Shownu finally laughed out, easing the tension in the air. "I can tell I will love coming to this restaurant."

And his eyes were happy like hot chocolate in a winter evening again.
