Part 24

EXT. CATACOMBS–DAY (FOGGY)

GINA and ERLE have lamps as they walk through the foggy area. Erle is carrying a crow and it's sleeping soundly in its cage.

GINA: What if we—

ERLE: No. Next topic please.

GINA: Are you still accusing Min of being a traitor?

ERLE: What do you think?

GINA: I think it's someone else entirely. Oh, that reminds me of this idea I had—

ERLE: For the love of god, Gina. You've been talking about your ideas for the past few hours. I don't mind chit chat but I prefer silence.

GINA: Ah... sorry.

They walk in silence for a bit and Gina walks next to Erle awkwardly.

GINA: So, did you end up talking to Lucy again?

ERLE: No.

GINA: Oh.

There's a pause and they walk in silence for a bit.

ERLE: I shouldn't have said that stuff... She's been really homesick for a long while now. Especially since she wanted to have chocolate cake the last time I went exploring like this.

GINA: Oh I—

ERLE: I really feel bad, y'know. I've been here so long too so I don't really miss home but she hasn't been here as long as me and is probably having a really rough time.

GINA: You could—

ERLE: If I bought her more of those pastries from the shop, do you think that will make her better?

GINA: I—

ERLE: No, that's a stupid idea. She got upset because the pastry wasn't chocolate cake.

GINA: Make a cake!

ERLE: What?

GINA: She wanted a cake, right? I bet she'll be happy to get a chocolate cake.

Erle stops walking abruptly and looks at Gina. Gina pauses in surprise.

ERLE: You're a genius.

GINA: Um, thank you.

ERLE: You got some good ideas.

GINA: Do you think we could get more information if we got Roch to look at our orbs? He thinks they're drugs and all.

ERLE: It could work. Not sure what exactly you want to happen though.

GINA: Think it's worth a shot?

Erle glances at her before shrugging.

ERLE: Maybe. You might want more people to help you with the whole scheme.

GINA: I'll bring it up with the others and see what happens.

ERLE: Good luck with that.

GINA: Thanks.

They walk in a comfortable silence. Gina squints and raises her lamp.

GINA: What's that?

ERLE: Hm?

They walk closer to a boarded up entrance with a warning sign saying "KEEP OUT". Gina raises her eyebrows in surprise and looks over to a stone next to the entrance. The stone is half smashed and the only legible part of the carvings on it says "COMBS".

ERLE: Weird place to sell some combs.

GINA: I think we found the catacombs.

ERLE: Well, no shit. I need to send a message crow.

They walk closer to the entrance. Erle proceeds to tend to the crow and send a message. Gina peers into the holes the boards fail to cover up only to see darkness. The crow flies away noisily and Erle soon joins Gina.

GINA CONT'D: I can't see anything.

ERLE: We should probably come back later to investigate.

GINA: Or we can try to break in.

ERLE: What? We could get in trouble.

GINA: We're not supposed to be here anyways.

ERLE: We're not breaking into the goddamn boards.

GINA: Why not?

ERLE: Because we shouldn't.

GINA: Aw, c'mon.

ERLE: It's a no.

CUT TO:

INT. CATACOMBS–DAY

The rock with carved letters crashes into the boards causing them to break. Gina observes the damage with pride and Erle looks at it with distain.

GINA CONT'D: Now, was that really that hard?

Gina carefully walks into the opening with her lamp.

ERLE CONT'D: Yes. My arms are hurting from throwing that damn thing.

He follows her and they walk in silence for a while. There are cobwebs covering the majority of the area and unfinished tombs can be seen.

GINA: We should be quick about this. We don't know if someone would happen to catch us here.

ERLE (mutters): I didn't want to go in, in the first place.

GINA: What happened to that guy who liked exploring?

ERLE: Wha—

GINA: Yeah, I know the rumours!

ERLE: I like exploring, not trespassing.

GINA: Well, think of it as exploring!

As they walk further the tombs start to become more frequent.

ERLE CONT'D: These are really creepy.

GINA: When is death and tombs not creepy?

ERLE: I mean... death metal isn't that creepy.

GINA (pause): I'm not going to comment on that.

ERLE: Alright.

They reach the end of the of the tunnel and Gina stares at it in confusion. There's an ornate, red tomb with the key hole on its side.

GINA: This is the end? Seriously?

ERLE: That tomb looks really fancy at least.

GINA (reads): Alexander Tobin. He must've been an important guy to get this tomb.

ERLE: Or he's just rich.

There are sudden loud noises from the entrance and Gina jumps.

GINA: What was that?

ERLE: I think we should leave. We can explore later with a lookout. Right now I got a bad feeling.

The two briskly walk back to the entrance only to find that the boards have been removed completely and the rock is out of sight.

GINA CONT'D: Where did everything go?

ERLE: I thought we got locked in for a second.

GINA: Who, cleaned up our mess? And why?

ERLE: Goat Man?

GINA: Do you think he would do that?

Gina peeks outside. The rock with carvings from earlier is back where it belongs in addition to being fully repaired now saying "CATACOMBS".

GINA CONT'D: The sign...

ERLE: What about it?

GINA: Either it's fixed or we were blind earlier.

ERLE: Wait, what?

Erle looks outside as well to see the spectacle and is shocked.

GINA: I want to leave now.

ERLE: Let's go and tell people what we found.

They leave the catacombs quickly. The rock sits silently and a silhouette of a figure stand over it as it quickly flickers out of sight.
