Part 50
EXT. GRASSY FIELD – NIGHT
MIN and JORDANIA walk through the field engaging in a normal conversation. The robot statue stands in its usual place and Min. glares at it. Jordania glances at Min and they nod at her.
JORDANIA CONT'D: We're really doing this now?
MIN: Someone got hurt over this. It's best to act now.
JORDANIA: Did you leave Darcy by himself?
MIN: No, Randi is with him. I made sure everyone is fine.
JORDANIA: Okay, good.
MIN: Now, get ready to give the letter to that robot.
JORDANIA: You sure you don't want to do this?
MIN: I don't want to risk it not working. The others have been complaining the past few weeks about Goat Man's absence. I don't think I can handle another day of whining.
JORDANIA: Alright. Here we go.
Min stops her.
MIN CONT'D: Jordania.
JORDANIA: Yeah?
MIN (pauses): Good luck.
JORDANIA: Thanks?
Jordania approaches the robot and her hand digs into her pocket to pull out a piece of paper. Min shifts on their feet uncomfortably in the background. She inserts the letter into the robot.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. CROWLEY'S SUPPLY AND OFFICES
ROCH walks into the room with a large wooden chest in his arms. The wallpaper is peeling from the walls and various stains litter the room. Slivers of sunlight peak through from the boarded windows, the ripped curtains framing the asymmetry. A desk missing a leg is present in the center of the room with a chair with animal scratches to accompany it.
ROCH: You know, I used to come here all the time to bust up illegal rings.
Roch walks to the desk.
ROCH: Crowley doesn't ask who takes up residence. Why would he? Seems this is as good as any for me though. That's just where I am in life now.
He places the chest on the desk and a puff of dust flies from the impact. He coughs and fans the air.
ROCH: But I'm going to figure out this madness infecting our city. Welcome to the offices of Roch, I suppose. Private Investigator.
A goat walks into the room and bleats noisily. Roch stares at it and gives an exasperated sigh.
CUT TO:
INT. THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY – DAY
The HISTORIAN unlocks the door of the building and he shines the doorknob with a handkerchief from his pocket.
HISTORIAN CONT'D: I haven't come back here in a long time. But what is a president of the historical society to do when the eyes are upon them? Seems a safe place to calm down.
The historian starts to walk away from the door. The sound of the door opening, and slamming shut echoes through the building and the historian halts. He turns around to see a group of children. BELINDA, NANCY, CONNER, JORDANIA, and MIN are there.
HISTORIAN CONT'D: Why h–
The historian barely manages to finish his sentence and he is swarmed by questions the children have.
BELINDA CONT'D: Hello! Why is Elgin a floating rock?
CONNER: Do you know how old Elgin is?
NANCY: Are how many other cities are in relation to Elgin?
The historian is flustered. Jordania loudly clears her throat and silence fell over the children. Jordania glances at Min and they nod back at her.
JORDANIA CONT'D: Do you happen to know anything about Theron Le Mort?
The historian dusts off his sleeve and his posture straightens.
HISTORIAN CONT'D: Le Mort? A mining family owned the major mines outside of town. Hasn't really been involved in politics to my knowledge, other than some donations here and there I imagine. When you have money, you want to use it. I've heard the son is more... passionate than his contemporaries.
JORDANIA: I see. Thank you for the intel.
Jordania looks at the three kids who stand there awkwardly. She sighs.
JORDANIA CONT'D: Alright. Have at him!
The kids go back to interrogating the historian. Min and Jordania walk to a quieter part of the room.
MIN CONT'D: They seem happy.
JORDANIA: Goat Man sent a note again, of course they are. He gave a hint about this place too so everyone is hyped up on the mystery.
MIN: Wonder who they should be thanking for that.
JORDANIA: Ha.
Silence falls over them for a few moments and Jordania looks at the group. Min follows her gaze and their eyes focus on the historian.
MIN CONT'D: So, Darcy is not a true non-native Elgin?
JORDANIA: Yeah, poor kid wanted to be included in whatever we were doing.
MIN: Weird. I always wanted to fit in with the Elgin kids.
JORDANIA: You were the first one here, weren't you?
MIN: One of the first. I think there were others but I'm not sure what happened to them. My memory isn't that great. At the same time, I was a baby when I came here.
JORDANIA: That's... concerning.
MIN: It's not uncommon for people to go missing around here. Don't worry about it too much.
JORDANIA: Uh, okay. (Pause) So what are we going to do about Darcy?
Nancy gets pushed to the side by Conner and Belinda pushes Conner in turn. Jordania looks at the scene sadly. The historian is in obvious distress and doesn't know what to do.
MIN CONT'D: He's not allowed to go into the dangerous situations anymore. That's for sure.
JORDANIA: Should we still let him join? He tried so hard to fit in.
MIN: He's not exactly eager to go back to earth.
JORDANIA: Well... Are you going to come back with us?
MIN: What does this have to do with anything?
JORDANIA: You're not exactly helping to get back to earth, right? Darcy can do the same right?
MIN: Darcy got hurt a few days ago. If he tagged along again, I don't think he'll even be able to do much. Imagine he gets get again just because he isn't one of us too.
JORDANIA: I wonder if the marks give us special protection.
MIN: Probably. Anyways, Darcy isn't like me. He would only get hurt even more.
JORDANIA: I guess. (Pause) You haven't answered my question.
MIN: Which one?
JORDANIA: Are you going to come to earth with us?
MIN: What would I do there?
Jordania waves her hands around to illustrate her thoughts and Min looks at her in confusion.
JORDANIA CONT'D: Explore maybe? I could show you lots of places. It would be fun.
MIN (glances): I'll think about it.
NANCY (to historian): Why is it so foggy in Elgin?
HISTORIAN (outraged): And now about the weather? The historical society does not have the funds to keep itself open if it is handling inquiries aboutthe weather! The historical society is now closed! Out! All of you! Out!
